Allie rasmus has a breakdown on the debate and issues that divided the candidates. Reporter the issue of health care and how everyone should get it dominated the start of the debate with Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders defending medicare for all, abandoning the private Insurance Market in favor of a tax funded system. Its comprehensive and covers all needs for senior citizens, including dental care, hearing aids and eye glasses. It used to be just republicans that wanted to repeal and replace, now Many Democrats do as well. We can get there with a public option. Reporter the issue of gun control was less divisive with the candidates supporting background checks and several agreeing about a ban on assault weapons like the one used in the mass shooting in gilroy. I will make sure we get universal background checks ban, the assault weapon ban and do something about magazines and understands when the 6 year old boy died, steven romero, his dad said he is only 6 years old. The issue is that the nra has news a choke hold. So dose the pharmaceutical companies reporter most candidates supported the idea of a pathway to citizenship for lawabiding immigrants and dreamers condemning the Trump Administrations policy of separating families at the border, but disagreed on how stop it. Several said crossing the border shouldnt be a crime. The criminalization statute is what gives donald trump the ability to take children away from their parents. Its what gives him the ability to lockup people at our borders. For profit detention in this country. So no family has to make that 2000mile journey, i expect people that come here follow our laws and we reserve the right to criminally prosecute them. Its time to stop worrying about what the republicans will say. If it is true that if we embrace a far left agenda, they are going to say we are crazy socialists. If we embrace a conservative agenda, they are going to say we are a bunch of crazy social lists. Lets stand up for the right policy. Reporter the second group of candidates will take the stage to start their debate in detroit. They will include former Vice President joe biden and california senator Kamala Harris. Allie rasmus, ktvu, fox 2 news. Usf Political Science pro Professor James tailor with us. I thought it was an informational debate. Lets start with Bernie Sanders. All of the candidates spent about 45 minutes on health care. We saw his fire and passion. Did it work for people watching at home . It did work. Most of the debate analysis is saying warren or Bernie Sanders won the debate defined as winning based on the presentations we have seen. The take away is Bernie Sanders. Elizabeth warren, acquitted herself very well. This was top three take, that shined night. I felt like i got more information from last nightser debate than i have the many debates past. It was substantive because of the range, you have 10 people, maybe five representing one side and maybe three or four representing another side. The Democratic Party is multi frontier thing right now. Warren pulled the party to her position, left but not all the way left and somewhere between joe biden and Elizabeth Warren is where the Democratic Party is going to end up. We see warren and sanders, you had Steve Bulloch going after him, trying to pull them back, saying if we go your direction, you might as well cab it in for 2020 and President Trump will get re elected. It doesnt work when you only have 1 when you are making it. There are 1 ers telling people with 30 primary support, their policies are out of step. The reality is that when donald trump won, 100 million americans did not vote, 60plus Million People that voted, voted against him. Midterms record defeat, lost democrats are mobilizing. Alexandria ocasiocortez, they represent the ground swell of everyday peoples reactions to trump. We are looking ahead to tonight with joe biden. You have another moderate. What do you expect from him. To be prepared for the race questions. Kamala harris and corey booker, trying to attack him. I think its a losing strategy for him. He is polling at 1 , even with black people, Kamala Harris not doing well with African Americans. Joe biden is. What works for kamala the first time cannot work a second time. If she acts desperately, accusing him of race and busing and kamala will exponentially sink. She has to do what . Articulate our own per spective and vision in the same way Elizabeth Warren did. Kamala harris won the second night. She cannot do it by surprising joe biden in the way she did on the roadside the first time. This time he is prepared and got push back in terms of governance in the state of california and prime to attack corey booker on newark. They are coming out about crime when they have their own baggage on crime when it comes to the African American voter. Joe biden has the black vote and they need it and going to attack him and its doing the backfire out of their desperation for it. The next debate is in texas in september. Always a pleasure.
