Reporter customers thought the noise were gunshots which triggered panic, controversy of people rushing out of the mall, police arriving a short time later placing the mall on lockdown. We just hear people running and they said there was shots fired. We were outside. We kept going. We stopped because i wanted to put her on my back and then they said shots fired again, so we just kept running again. The. Reporter police soon learned that the incident was not an active shooter. It was scary because i had my kids. I have asthma and and we heard shooting. I just we were running across the freeway to like get away from everything. We were trying to find a place to hide. Reporter late into the night the mall entrances were blocked by police while inside the mall officers searched for people who may have sheltered in place and remained hidden. Workers were forced to wait outside while the mall was cleared, a day of shopping suddenly turning into mass panic. There were a lot of jokes about shooting and stuff, but thats honksly honestly like ive never lived that, so right now its scary to me. Reporter in the last few minutes mall workers were told to meet at the home depot on this property. Perhaps theyre getting and retrieving their belongings. A San Francisco woman says thieves stole her car battery from her hybrid prius. The car was parked on webster street in the Pacific Heights neighborhood. It turns out thieves pulled the back seats and took the car batter from her car. Had i been lucky enough to have the windows broken and the change taken, i would have been very happy. Reporter shes been a ific heights in the city but nothing quite like this. Finally a policeman came by and said theyd never seen anything like this. Reporter last thursday at 6 30 in the evening kaplan had her prius parked on webster street between california and sacramento. She returned the following morning to find her car disheveled. I looked down and the entire back seat was removed. I thought they had stolen the back seat because i didnt know and i couldnt open the car. The electrical system was completely shot. Reporter unable to open or start her prius, she reported it to her Insurance Company who told her thieves likely stole her hybrid battery underneath the back seat. Sure enough, she found wires cut. We looked up and the battery weighs 180 pounds. So we were completely amazed. I couldnt lift 0 i dont weigh 180 pounds. 18 reporter kaplan and her partner believe this was no run of the mill theft. The thieves were able to remove a small rear glass window without breaking it or cutting it. This has to be a much more professional criminal that would take a huge battery and then find a place to sell. It. Reporter a camera is mounted in the exact spot where the car was parked, but it was aimed in the wrong direction. Kaplan is now thinking about not having a car at all. She said what happened to her, its simply not worth it. People should not park on dark streets because must be how they know how to do it. They must have done it so quickly. She posted her ordeal on nextdoor and says people have reported similar thefts at Stanford University and she tells me the school is alerting students to not park in remote parently this is going on and we were just talking about. It possibly theres a market for this type of crime. Easy to steal those. They weigh 180 pounds. You have to have at least a couple people picking them up taking them out of there. Right. She believes it must have taken more than one person. It was in a rather dark area. She think it was a professional crew because they were able to pull the window from the back seat and the window was not broken. It was completely intact. They clearly know what theyre doing. Right. Thank you. A car burglary suspect is hospitalized tonight with life threatening injuries after a San Francisco police car crashed into a bus stop injuring both the suspect and an officer. It happened before 5 30 last night near geary boulevard and webster street. This is video from the scene. Police say two plain clothes officers chased two car burglary suspects on foot. The Unmarked Police car was responding when the crash happened. One suspect was critically injured. A second suspect was unhurt and arrested at the scene. The officer involved was also not hurt. In hayward tonight an emotional vigil for a beloved husband and father who was hit and killed by a car last week. 52yearold don grenet was one of two pedestrians hit by a car in hayward along busy a street last thursday night. He died at the scene. Tearful friends and family members attended the vigil. They brought flowers, cards and lots of support to his widow. She is thankful for the kindness but said what she really needs are answers. I just want answers. If witnesses can come forward and just cooperate with the police and find it out what happened, exactly what happened, why it happened, id appreciate that. Police have not released details about the crash. They did say the driver who hit grenet stayed at the scene cooperating with police. She wanted to be a teacher ever since she was a little girl. Reporter in her 27 years as a teacher at Grimmer Elementary School in fremont, she said she also did a lot of learning. They but i learned to be a better human being and a better teacher through them. Reporter about 10 years ago she learned about a child who had been bullying classmates for years. But very under the radar and finally we heard about it and my principal, she and i were overwhelmed. I grieved. I went home and felt like something died because i thought we had a school that was kind and compassionate and loving. Judy and i promised each other that we would learn what to do because we didnt know what to do. Reporter three years ago she retired. Thomas said it was just time, but her wife says she never saw the joy of teaching dim. When she was still working, every day she went to school you would think it was her first day at school. I wanted to see what we did to the little shed and it was all from the heart. When people see it, theyll see how much we did to paint with it. Reporter so many years later it is still all about the children, so many of whom are all grown up now but who remember ms. Thomas. She teared up when she told me about a man just this summer who thanked her for a conversation she had with him m conversation that made a difference.
