Mike bloomberg, the former new york city mayor, was in his first residence of debate, the other candidates attacked his record on the controversial stop and frisk policy in new york city as well as reports of Sexual Harassment and discrimination for bloomberg says hes the best candidate to attract moderates and independents. Mr. Bloomberg have policies in new york city of stop and frisk, which went after African American and latino people in an outrageous way. A billionaire who calls women fast broads and horse faced lesbians, and no, im not talking about donald trump. Im talking about mayor bloomberg. Im a new yorker. I know how to take on an arrogant con man like donald trump. Meanwhile, President Trump is holding rallies in Colorado Springs today and tomorrow in las vegas that the nevada caucus is set for saturday. Democratic president ial candidates tom steyer was not on the debate states last night, but we are hearing from him this morning. Greg lee here now with steyers perspective on the president ial race. Good morning. Tom, thanks for joining us from your hometown here in San Francisco, oakland. Were not on the debate states last night like mike said, but things got heated and ugly at times. He said it helps one person, President Trump. What else for your takeaways, especially with Mike Bloombergs debut . Well, you know, honestly i felt that mike might be running in the wrong primary. I think its very hard to come up with an explanation for stop and frisk, for his support of redlining communities by banks, and by his speech in support of the reelection of george w. Bush in 2004 at the Republican National convention. I just think its just very hard to square that with being the leader of the Democratic Party in 2020 at a time when we need , the pull that Party Together , the diverse Democratic Party together, and be donald trump in the fall. Along those lines, they released a new tag. Look, i am happy to have mike be on that stage. Im happy to have him bring out his you know, his policy ideas, and say whatever he wants to say. I think that if you are a successful business person like mike or me and you want to be the democratic nominee, you have to be in favor of a wealth tax because what weve seen in america is unjust, income, and wealth inequality at a level that is absolutely unacceptable. And the head of the Democratic Party has got to be leading the fight to undo that inequality , and a wealth tax is a prerequisite to show that you understand and care about it. Mike bloomberg wants to represent the democratic people, the Democratic Party. He cant just be try to attacked replicants and independents. Hes got to put together our diverse, Wonderful Party that includes black people and latinos and Asian Americans and native americans as well as white people, and so i dont mind what mike does. I just want it to be clear that the message for democrats, for anybody, and thats what i have been saying a long, we need to pull together this party, we need to do it across every line including philosophy, and that includes a wealth tax. It really means being able to take on trump on the economy in a real way to show that we can and that he is lying, that what hes done is bad for americans economically, and we have a much better program. We will give americans better onto their pocketbooks. Hes been polling well, but youve also dominated the ads there. From the ground, do you think your message is resonating with voters, like you mentioned voters of color . You talk about ads, but ive spent more time on the ground personally in nevada and South Carolina than any other candidate, and we probably have the most people on the ground. Im somebody who started a big grassroots organization, next gen america. I believe its critical if you want to represent someone. You got a chance to look them in the eye and listen to what they say, and they get to do the same for you. In fact, were seeing a lot of momentum in nevada. And expect the really good results on saturday, and we are seeing a ton of momentum in South Carolina. These are the two first diverse states, and im going to show i can put together that Diverse Coalition of democrats, that i can put together the coalition not just to win the nomination, but to beat mr. Trump in the fall because that is what it is going to take a if you dont do well in the next two states, will limit for the future of your campaign . You make it to super tuesday, your home state of california . You know, greg, i never speculate about bad outcomes i dont believe in. I believe that what i see on the ground as momentum. I think its verified by all of the public and target polling i have seen, and in fact, i am going to do this. I am the person who can take on trump and show that what he has is the maralago economy. He is an economy good for rich people at the maralago country club. But for working people, we need a tax cut for everybody who makes less than 250,000 bucks, and im going to produce 1 of 10 that we need millions of good paying union jobs across the country, and im going to do that by rebuilding america in a Climate Smart way. We need a completely different Wage Structure here. We need a living wage where one job is enough. A 7. 25 minimum wage which is the National Minimum wage is an insult to working people. We need to revise the union movement, get this country growing faster, and making sure that working people keep a lot more than money. Thank you, tom, for your time. We wish you all the luck for saturday. I hope to see you in the bay. Someone in Elizabeth Warrens camp said look, you did not do good in iowa, in new hampshire. You need to come out swinging. A lot of people think she did, do you agree . She may have won the debate last night. She spoke the most out of any of the candidates last night. Their place in iowa, fourth place in new hampshire. She needed to revive her campaign a little bit, and she came out and did not hold any punches that she went after bloomberg right off the bat, but that she went after everyone else on policies right down the line. And i think reflected well for her because its the strongest weve seen her perform to dates. Where does joe biden stand is money . I think joe biden, he knew he needed to also have a big debate, but i think he benefited from the fact at the Bernie Sanders that everyone was so worried and focus on Mike Bloomberg and attacking the new guy, that for him, he kind of got to stand back, let everyone attack. He did not have a lot of opportunity to mess of which weve seen him do in previous debate, he got his point in when he needed to, so i think were joe biden, he stood his ground and expect to do well in nevada and South Carolina because theyve been a firewall for him. What is winning the debate mean for Elizabeth Warren . Is it really going to make a difference in her campaign, or is it going to be a oneday bump and back to the usual . When you look at Amy Klobuchar in new hampshire, she had a good debate, came in third place and suppressed a lot of people. This one is expected to do well in the state because of the more diverse states that we are going to see, so i think certainly, she is expected to do well in nevada and carried that momentum is alkaline a. Theres no doubt about this. People want momentum going into super tuesday. More than a third of the National Delegates throughout the state including more than 400 in california need that push going into much. I think it was safe to say Bernie Sanders was the front runner going into this debate. I dont think he was challenged the most, maybe in part because the bloomberg, but so far, you know, he did not hurt himself. And i athink you are right. He still stands as a front runner because he got his point in, defended himself, and its kind of cemented where he is at at the lee. Greg lee, always a pleasure. Guy johnson is the son of famed author and civil rights activist, maya angelou. He said he never felt he lived in his mothers shadow, but instead lived in her light. Johnson lives here in oakland, and he talks about how hes getting back to his community and inspiring the next generation of writers, dave. Pick very much. Guy johnson, its a pleasure you were here with me by now. Were going to talk a lot about of things about your mom, but our first talk, the essay contest, the maya angelou essay writing contest that youve instituted, but into the Oakland School district for young kids. Tell me about it. I wish i had instituted it, but i worked with marsha rines. Yes. Fabulous, fabulous, and she is such an angel as a teacher, that i found myself really tied to the schools because these children are our future, and they will determine the nature of the world, and if we dont invest in them, that really is, its an unfortunate circumstance. What i am doing with this essay contest is, first off, i dont feel that i have the knowledge to really affect the school system. It is much more complex. It is funding issues and all of that. It is much more complex, but what i wanted to do is give the children an extra incentive to write because i felt that path is a constructive path, and also the nature of the essay contest is about my mothers statement which is you may meet defeat, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary for you to meet the people to find out who you are and what kind of circumstances you can get out from. And for me, this essay contest is about these children finding out who they are because were asking them to delve within themselves, to understand some of the impulses which they may not have examined. Some of the pain, some of the sense of abandonment, some of the sense of displacement, and you see, i think that is a positive thing. First off, i think to invest that kind of energy diffuses some of the anger and diffuses some of the impulses that they cant control, but more than that it is a learning process to learn to write, and ive, i really believe that students who are capable of communicating effectively in writing, if they have a little math, and i dont mean calculus and algebra, but if they have sufficient math, they can do dog on near any job. Sure. So i am hoping that it opens doors within themselves as well as opportunities for them. Let me just jump in. This is going to take place at La Escuelita Elementary School in oakland next month, and there are cash prizes involved. That is true. What i did is i set up a first prize of 5,000, a second prize of 3,000, a third prize of 1,800. And calm these children, more than what they receive in the money, will be published. All the childrens essays who were in the top 10 of 15, their essays will be published. They will be in a book, and i really feel this gives the kids a chance to be proud of themselves, and it also gives the Oakland School district something to be proud of. Much of the news you hear about School Districts these days isnt good. No. And what i am hoping is that this is the kind of thing that is transferable, that if other people see that, that they have the capacity to do this, that they will establish essay contests for other children and other School Districts. Will, you go ahead and lead the way, guy johnson. I think its great that you and marsha rines and everybody involved with this program, its going to be spectacular what you are doing. Im proud of you well, i wish i could say i done it on my own, but there are wonderful people behind this. Margaret who works at barnes noble, she is the one that got the children published first, and she really worked hard to bring the children down so they could buy books, and she and marsha rines, they raised money for these children, and when you see teachers who were angels, who are not teachers because that is the job they got, no, this is the job that they love. They love. And they love these children, and i just and that when you are working with angels, itseasy to seem to be good. I applaud them, i applaud you, and i applaud your mom, maya angelou, for what she instilled in you. I wish we could talk forever, but we ran out of time, but guy johnson, thank you for taking the time and coming into the tremont studios, being with us on the nine, and for the kids, i expect Great Success for you because of guy johnson and all the people supporting you. We are as well. Mr. Johnson, thank you. Its an honor, thank you so much. I will send it back to you. Coming up on tran07 the nine, a man in recovery. Happening today, roger stone is in a courtroom in washington, d. C. Is about to learn his sentence on his convictions unwitnessed temping in line to congress. Floor blanchard report, there is speculation the longtime ally of President Trump could end up with a president ial pardon. Reporter roger stone arrive to court for his official sentencing thursday morning. His fate still being decided in a d. C. Courtroom. Earlier this month, it was recommended by prosecutors that stone serve seven to nine years, which is according to federal guidelines, but a president ial tweet condemning that sentence and a memo from the Justice Department recommending a lesser sentence opened attorney general bill barr to criticism and prompted the entire queue doj prosecutors to step down from the case. You need to leave that up to those who are running this process. I think we let the Justice Department with the legal system played. Reporter something President Trump may now use his power to pardon, which he is already used this week to erase the sentence for his former ally. I dont know what the president is going to do. Im suggesting he might pardon roger stone today because the minute he signs that pardon, this judge is divested of jurisdiction in the case, and stone walked out of the courtroom. Reporter stone has asked for a new trial. That decision is pending, so until then, stone not begin any prison sentence just yet. In washington, lauren blanchard, ktvu fox 2 news. Dramatic rescue this week in marin county involved dozens of lawenforcement officers and more than 24 hours after he was reported missing, Robert Bennett was found alive near a trail in lucas valley in san rafael. Those responsible for the safe include the marin county share office will search and rescue team. Thank you both for joining us and bringing in single right now. I will start with you, bob, about the initial call. Mr. Bennett was reported missing monday night, president s day. When were you first involved . We did not get called. We were in a Different Event until today. We did not get called until noon. So we were at at in inverness, and we received a call that there was a missing person, so we diverted a lot of resources from the inverness search and headed over to marin. When did you get involved in this incident . After work. I got a call to go over with my dog, and i go up to marin. When you first get wind of the event, you have it gentlemen who is missing. What happens next. What it used to when it comes to trying to find his missing individual . We have to report to the search command first, figure out where the command wants us to start, and for the canines, i have a trailing dock, so we need to get sense. Another canine team was there ahead of me and had collected, and that we started from the vehicle. Mr. Bennetts vehicle. Correct. And take it from there, so she took me up the trail, and we went about three quarters of a mile i believe it was, and then she took off on drainage, she started going up to the drainage, she is a sent specific doll, so he was in that drainage or a scent was in the drainage, and at that time i knew there is another resource available, which is an area dog, which is not sent not specific, but they cover the area much quicker and larger areas, so the area dogs went into the drainage and they found him above, so that is how. As soon as we found out we have a hit, we found what we were looking for, this person from the outset is alive, with a pulse, take it from there and what happens next . We were fortunate. We had another resource, so the combination of marin search and rescue and the fire department, we headed up to the blackstone canyon. We had about a three quarter of a mile hike up, we took quite a bit of equipment so we had a combination of litter, our bag which is the body splints, and a lot of rope here in case we had a more technical rescue. The gentleman was about a quarter of a mile up on a very steep embankment, and you know, he was alert and alive but was pretty, pretty down. And i just got word from the surgeon with the Marin County Sheriffs Office that Robert Bennett right now is in the intensive care unit at a hospital and that he most likely suffered a stroke and had a fall during this hike, but that the reason hes alive and in the icu right now is because of single, because of you, shay. Summit has we hear stories that it does not come out on a positive note. In this case, it looks like we do for now, and mr. Bennett has a chance at life right here because of what you did. You walked away from that knowing what . How do you feel . Its a whole team effort, so you know, without them telling me where to go in securing the scene and getting out there and with the complementary resources , the area dog out there, it is a huge reward in a sense to be able to contribute in that way, and it is and it does reassure you to keep doing what youre doing because it does make a difference, so it is reassuring. Im hoping he makes a full recovery. Help but you, bob . You know, the First Responder community, you know, this is what we trained for, and this does not happen all the time, so this is a special one, and to be a part of a group like this including fire and Law Enforcement and search and rescue teams, i get very emotional, you know, at the conclusion of these because we do make a difference, and you know . We want to get better. We were talking this morning before about how we can improve for the next time. Instead of eight hours, try to do this in 6. You got to a great job not just in the bay area. It makes it interesting and challenging, especially when those issues are personal. I think i love being part of a show that wants to address, you know, diversity in a way that we are attempting. We have an amazing team of, of sheriffs detectives that help us every day and help bring the authenticity to the show , and have to say we would be completely lost with out we lean on them so hard to help us with to create the show, and without them, we would not have what we have today for sure. You went to ucla, a degree in sociology. Do you use that background, your experience there in los angeles in your role . Its funny you say. I went into ucla as an english major, but i read an article about sociology and how that helped them in what they do in terms of as artists and creators, so i switched majors, so i like to think that my degree helped me in what i do today, but i think overall, it helped me be more rounded man, human beings. You learn about cade about his past, his demons, his wounds, and his struggle, and about basically his human condition, and you know . It was thats what i think what people in the audience will kind of connect with, and you know, we are a very action driven show. We are starting to balance it out now with more, you know, character driven episode. What you like about cade and your character . I love cade, and cade i think has been one of the greatest gifts ive been given in my career so far. I like hes a very complex character with a lot of layers. I find that its challenging and also so fulfilling. Its also close to home. I connected with cade. Hes personal for me, at any time that that happens in what i do, it is a gift. Anything that is personal, and i think you tend to do better work if you can really connect and relate to the character that you are playing. You can definitely see that on camera. Takeback summits, brian, on deputy. You can watch deputy at 9 00, followed by the 10 00 news and 11 00 news. Im thinking past tomorrow. Thousands have seen the show, created by Lin Manuel Miranda giving his modern take on Early American History and following the story of founding father, alexander hamilton, and to mark one year on this date, we are excited to welcome two stars of the show in 2 the nine. Thank you both for being here. You have been with hamilton and the beginning. What an incredible experience. You are on stage with Lin Manuel Miranda. Being in puerto rico, having the energy of being with his home, when he came out as alexander hamilton, the show just dropped. It was like how long is this a plot going to go . It really is a rock concert. When i went, everyone was singing right along with you. How do you feel when youre on stage . That is the part of the show i feel so connected to, and they show such a connection to me. But they already know the words, and sometimes i have to tune out the fact that people are mouthing the words right back at me, but it is the gift that keeps on giving because that happens for three hours and after the show and happens on my social media. Its beautiful. People have to be seeing the show more than once because they know the words but you have been selling out shows for a year now. What is it like knowing that you are playing to people who already know what you are going to say and do . Its really exciting, and also for people who have seen the show multiple times, you know, you can see it, and you can see people playing different characters. When i was there, people said i saw you do eliza last week and peggy, and now i am angelica. It is so exciting you get to be seen with your versatility, and impacts them so much, that they keep coming back for more. There are points in the show that make me cry, and what you are putting on stage directly feels like its mimicking what is in my life. I had to reread my history book to really understand whats going on. The fact that its a personal show for many, what you want people to come away with after they see you . I think that last part that, you know, there is space for us all, he says, you know, the world is wide enough for both hamilton and me. As aaron burr, i worked so hard to get to that point. Im telling you i am the one you hate, but also im going to tell the story and show you that , despite the fact that we were friends, we had conflicts, it was not all black and white. There was a really gray area, but there was the us both and there was space for everybody. That is what i want people to walk away, like inclusivity , accepting each other for who we are, you know . It is a timely message. I always cry at that really sad part which i will say in case you havent seen it. Tickets are on sale through may 31, so there will be long lines and waits, but thats not always the case anymore. Head to ktvu. Com, click on wait links, to get your tickets on hamilton. Tony hawk. He performed friday. Im in love by the cure. He did not survive elimination. The pro skateboard explained to our dave clark how he had the courage to sing in front of a national audience. To be behind the mask, to be sort of anonymous give you an extra sense of confidence, that is what allowed me to do it, so i really enjoyed it. He also said he one of his signature skate helmets underneath that elephant mask because it was the most comfortable way to hold it in place. The masked singer is next wednesday at 8 00 right here on ktvu ktvu plus. Mickeys search party is coming to the bay area. To give us a behindthescenes look and what is in store, we are live by nicholas who plays buzz lightyear from toy story. If i had to pick a disney character, i mean buzz lightyear is probably topfive for me. How do you feel about playing buzz . It is such a dream come true. Hes one of my favorite characters growing up. When i came to the show when i was younger, it was actually the character i dressed up as, so it was a really cool full circle moment. I heard about new things happening in the show this season. Tell me about this swing pole i keep hearing about. How does it work . So if you look right over here, we have one of our acrobats whose name is aura and he is from armenia. He climbed up the 16 foot pole and attached himself in, and now he is using his body weight to lean back and forth and perform tricks, so you will see he reaches into the audience. It really does get right over the audience which is so cool. So he will highfive people on the ice too. It is a really cool, interactive part of the show. Is there any hesitancy about hey, we need somebody to go do this part of the show . Did everyone raise their hands or was it hard to get people . We do have a lineup of backups for him just in case, you know, you were to be sick or unable to perform, so we have a list of people able to do this who train on it every week. I think its great hes able to highfive people on the stand, get close to the arena or to the floor there. Highflying acrobats, also something that uses core balance. Tell me a little bit about the hover boards here. The hover board is a really cool part of our show, which is in the opening segment. So, weve all seen them. They are a very popular choice. But we actually have people doing acrobatic elements on them, which is really amazing. We will have people doing handstands on them, we will have people lying down on two and going all across the ice. Is really something cool, something ive never seen before. I definitely have never seen it in an ice show. Its a really cool element of our show, and its one of the more, you know . I love that you guys are spicing it up and doing all these different things. As we let you go and im looking behind you over your shoulder, show us a little bit about this coco and coproduction segment. You can see in the back we have beautiful projections, and even on the ice projection, thats an amazing part of the show. We have our marionettes, so we have these, about 20 foot tall skeletons that come out during the number, and they are definitely an audience favorite, and we have our miracle bridge which is what take miguel to the land of the dead where we have this celebration of music. Nicholas bausenwein playing buzz lightyear. Nicholas, thank you so much for your time, and have a great run here in the bay area.
