It is surrounding us in concern and in how were supposed to be dealing with this. The World Health Organization today saying it was prolonged by inaction. Tell me about your level of concern and how were handling this. I think World Health Organization is right on, number one. The only way that we can really try to contain the spread is by one, early detection, and two, early quarantine. And those are the two things that i think we really need to focus on right now. You talk about early detection. But the real issue is we keep hearing there are so many people who cannot get tested for the coronavirus. Theres a shortage of the testing kits all across the board around the world. How long is it gonna be before were able to ramp up testing . Thats a very good question. I wish i had the answer to that. Unfortunately i dont. But what i have heard is that other independent Lab Companies are now being able to test for this virus. Which is very good news in itself. Sure. However, that takes two to three days to come back if it t waiting, as everyone is doing what they can with the situations we know, this cruise ship, were gonna quarantine folks, and move people over here. The cities in San Francisco say events over 1,000 people. Santa clara county as well. Do you think these are good ideas . Do you think everyone should be hopping on board . That is shouldnt just be one county or another . And is that enough . We talked about movie theater, any travelling. Good question. I think like all the leadership is mentioning, we need all hands on deck. We need to be on the ship, support, sails away. And i do agree with these bans in place. I think its very, very important. One of the only ways to try to stop the spread or contain it is by making sure that the people who are asymptomatic or mildly affected by this disease who are not testing, we dont have a high likelihood that theyre gonna be positive, but yet they are. Theyre still infecting other people. And those people could be the ones that end up in the hospital who are older or who have underlying medical conditions. And thats the reason we want to try to limit these large gatherings. Research has been done about the coronavirus that its able to live on surfaces for up to three days. And so im curious. From your standpoint, how concerning is that in terms of how rapidly we might start to see the spread within the community . That information is still evolving. And we dont have all the answers to how it stays active on the surface and how you can pick that up. The only thing i can recommend right now, not to alarm anyone, is repeating the same thing. Washing our hands is the number one and biggest thing we can do to try to contain this. Okay. Thank you so much for coming in. Thank you so much. The insight and the advice as we try to navigate through all of this. Were all working through this together here. And we have complete and in depth coverage for online at our home page, countybycounty breakdown of coronavirus cases. Coming up, were gonna talk with a Population Health expert about flatning the coronavirus curve. Hes gonna explain why slowing the sprefd infection is nearly as important as stopping it. Another sunny day out there with warm temperatures. Still tracking a few scattered showers moving in from the south. Well talk about those showers and a big change that will move in by the weekend. The and change the world. Here at abbvie, were inventing medicines of the future to create tomorrows that will be healthier. And happier, while making medicines that help people right now. Because thats the present we wanted to live in. And thats the future we all want to see. Abbvie. Here. Now. A simple graph showing the damage from the krooven went viral at the end of february after a Health Analyst tweeted this out. Its from the economist, based on information from the cdc. The graph has two curves. One has a steep peak. Another has a flatter slope, showing a more gradual rate of infection over a longer period of time. Now, for more on what all of this mean, were joined by dr. Drew harris from Thomas Jefferson university. Thanks so much for your time here. The idea is that you want to try to flatten out the curve. What exactly does that mean . Well, the peak of the curve represents that the virus itself is spreading very quickly in the community. So the cases are adding up literally daybyday. What we really want to do is make sure that doesnt happen. We dont want the disease to spread to the community. We want to be able to keep that curve low so that the people who are there to respond to the virus, hospitals, emergency department, they have the capacity to treat the people who are sick. You need to know that right now looks like only 80 of the public who get this virus dont get really seriously ill, but the 20 who do are gonna be in a hospital. If you can lower that curve, that means were gonna be able to accommodate those folks in the hospital. And obviously you dont want everyone sick at the same time. All showing up in the hospital. That potentially endangers healthcare workers. We see the flatter curve on the chart. What it says there is with protective measures. What are the most effective mitigation measures . And are we already seeing those being put into place . Well, were certainly talking about it a lot. And youre starting to see that all over the world. The first thing, you want to isolate the victims to make sure they dont spread the virus. We want to quarantine the people who have been exposed to sick people. We dont know if theyre sick or not. Make sure they dont go on to spread the virus. We want to close schools and ensure that kids who are not gonna get terribly sick themselves dont come home and spread it to people who are at higher risk for the disease like the elderly. Can i pick up on that point there . Sure. Here in the bay area, we have news today that the city of San Francisco, they have chosen to ban all large events of more than 1,000 people. But at the same time we heard from the superintendent of schools saying that they are not making the decision at this point to close schools. Do you feel like that could be coming down the road . Well, thats a classic case of being careful and understanding the consequences. Yes, maybe its great that we close the schools, keep the kids at home so they dont pick up the virus and spread it again, but there are many children who are at risk for other things. And they get their meals from the schools. The parents have to work, they dont have the time to work from home and the income to support themselves. To take care of those kids. So its a very difficult social decision to be made. And i would only say schools should be closed if the virus is actually be spread throughout the school. Before, that youre really gonna be causing more harm than good. And you have to think about the consequences. Sure. As we step back more broadly and look at what is now being determined to be a pandemic here. Designated by the wonderfuled just today. The wrld just today. What do you think the timeline will be . Well, thats a really important question. I dont have the models to explain and figure that out. Thats what were trying to figure out right now. But estimates are within a couple of week, well know whether this pan dem sick peaking very quickly. And whether we intervened early enough to stop it. You should be using the time to ramp up our preparedness activity, get the public ready. We understand this so were not rushing right now, to explain this problem. And we also want to spend that time trying to build up our Testing Capacity so we can measure where the virus actually it. Actually is. Right now, were just flying through without radar. We really dont know where the virus is spreading until the patients are coming in sick, and were testing them. We would be testing Healthy People to determine where the areas of highest concentration are. Yeah, certainly the lack of testing and available kits is holding us back. We have to leave the conversation there. We appreciate your insights. Dr. Drew harris from Thomas Jefferson university. Thanks for coming in. Thank you. We just got an update from the Oakland Unified School district about the coronavirus and what officials are doing to keep children healthy and safe. At this point they do not have any confirmed cases in oakland schools. There are two students who are selfquarantined but they have not tested positive for the virus. If you get the recommendations that they say we should close school, we will close schools. Its in partnership with them, our own Public Health people and our leadership team. That is quite possibly what would happen. Because of this situation, what we know about it, we have not determined that it is necessary for the schools. While schools will remain open, the district is suspending or delaying activities that have more than 100 people. The spokesperson says theyre stilling what to do about sporting events. The city of oakland banned venues hosting events with more than 1,000 people. That includes fox and paramount theaters. It does not include the Oakland Coliseum or arena. Bay area weather today. Overnight lows, most areas will be in the 40s to the lower 50s. Heres the plan tomorrow morning. Mid40s to the mid50s. And then once again well have more sunshine by 3 00, 4 00. Bernie sanders says he is staying in the democratic president ial race even after joe biden won at least four out of the six states that were voting in yesterdays primary. Peter ducey tells us what sanders says hes looking forward to as this race moves forward. Reporter Bernie Sanders basically said that joe biden is doing better with older democrats. But Bernie Sanders is doing better with younger democrats. And he thinks Party Leaders should be paying closer attention to that. In order to win in the future, you need to win the voters. Who represent the future of our country. Hes really changing his message. His message has been i alone can beat donald trump because i can expand the electorate, get blue color voters involved. Reporter Bernie Sanders says hes looking forward to the first twoman debate of the cycle. Also the first audiencefree debate of the cycle as Party Officials try to follow orders not to host large gathers. Normally this is a time where the Biden Campaign would have to brief their candidate about possible line was attack coming from a candidate who is trailing. There would be some guess work involved but not this time. Because Bernie Sanders went ahead and told joe biden all the points he plans to press him on. Joe, what are you gonna do for the 500,000 people who go bankrupt in our country because of medically related debt . Reporter something sanders did not address is whats gonna happen to his rallies. Because big rallies with thousands of people are a trademark of the Bernie Sanders president ial campaign. They were in 2016, they for this 2020. Many of them happen in College Towns or on college campuses. Colleges are closing up right now because of coronavirus concerns. Were joined by dr. Laura wright, a lecturer at princeton university. Always good to have you on. Do you see any way that Bernie Sanders can climb back into things . Its very, very difficult. But we have to keep in mind we have a debate coming up sunday. So if something drastically bad happens to joe biden, its not out of the question. But the math is just nearly impossible for Bernie Sanders at this point. So he would have to change things in a dramatic way, turn them upside down and overperform in this big set of primary states we have again on the 17th. None of which really favor him. Its florida, arizona, up on su in arizona. One of state states thats voting. What do you think Bernie Sanders strategy should be . Well, he would have to sort of show an utter domination of the stage, and he would have to take some very pointed attacks at biden on his record. The risk of that is he would bifurcate the Democratic Party even further. Party elite, elected officials do not want to see this happen. They want a strong candidate to emerge to beat donald trump. Its sort of a doubleedged sword that hes facing. Biden with strong support so far in the primaries from women through key voting blocks. Why do you think it is that these key groups are getting behind biden at this point . Well, bernies strategy in states like michigan depended on an increase in young voter turnouted that was unprecedented. And in some studies, he would have had to increase voter turnout among young people by 30 to even match a middle of the road hypothetical moderate candidate. So joe biden is doing well because of the things weve known mattered for a long time. He is familiar to voters. Closer associated in recent memory with the obama administration. And he has high factorability. Sometimes when we Start Talking about a revolution and things that have never happened before, we forget to account for the variables that are highly predictive of vote choice and Election Results and the size of the voting block that divide those. Well have to wait and see how much longer Bernie Sanders decides to keep at it here in this race. Dr. Lauren wright, lecturer in politics at princeton, thank you. Nice to see you. For a very warm day out there with lots of sunshine. We have been tracking a few showers. Patchy fog regrouping near the golden gate bridge. Big changes by the weekend. Dad, im scared. Its only human to care for those we love. And also help light their way. Its why last year chevron invested over 10 billion to bring affordable, reliable, ever cleaner energy to america. 0 Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and swat. And Sexual Assault. He was convicted for raping a woman in a new York City Hotel room and for another assault with a woman in 2006. He faced a maximum of 29 years in prison. For more on the sentence. Was this number a surprise to you . Well, to all of the victims of Sexual Assault, watching and joining the program, youre not alone. And i hope this is an example of justice and solace that can come after a really ardius process for the two women who were the accusers who were turned into the accused by Harvey Weinstein and all of his publicists and enablers. Its really an overwhelming number. And the fact he will now spend the rest of his life in prison, it should be an example to people when we said enough, when we said stop, being famous, being rich, a movie producer, is no excuse for harming people. We heard from him for the first time in court. For 20 minutes he kind of went on in his long comments. One of the things he said was that the movement basically started with me, im quoting now i think what happened, you know, i of the first example nds of up and talks about having friendships with his victims. What does that tell but where his mindset is right now . Let me just say, i was a Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault prosecutor 20 years ago in the San Francisco District Attorneys Office well before some of those activities occurred. They were crimes then, and theyre crimes now. For him to say that he didnt know, mistake of law is not an excuse for Sexual Assault or rape. He absolutely did know what he was doing. He absolutely used and abused his power. And he crushed the dreams of all of these young women who wanted to get ahead in the movie business and shouldnt have had to pass through Harvey Weinsteins personal casting couch in order to do that. Its absolutely wrong. Hes in denial. Its the mind of a predator. And if he wants to somehow make himself feel better by sense of solidarity with other male oppressors, thats on him. The fact of the matter is at the time he committed his crime, people were can going to prison for that activity every single day in america. Its just that a rich white man was finally accused and brought to justice. That changed this case. And he want the first. Wasnt the first. It was just that he was the first famous person that we heard of, and of course, the 900 laws we helped pass across the country, every industry is now finding out that there is a whole generation of women, of people of color, talented people who can replace these predators in a heartbeat. All right. We are almost out of time. I will say the judge made a statement afterward saying this is not a first defense. Offense. Calling the sentence obscene, cowardly for the
