So many parents are trying to figure out what to do about child care and also trying to insure their kids continue to learn while theyre out of school. This weekend the nonprofit Bay Area Tutoring Association has been getting a flood of calls for help. The last few days have been unprecedented and the number of phone calls and emails that we received on our website in terms of how can i support my student or how can i make sure that the academic needs of my student are met the next several weeks has been incredible. Reporter chris norwood, founding director of the association, says many parents are trying to figure out how to keep their kids learning while they are out of the classroom. He said the current supply of tutors cant meet demand, but people are also contacting the association to help. Weve already started receiving phone calls from people that said i want to volunteer to work with students. It hasnt hit me. It just didnt hit me. Reporter rita lu describes her reaction when she learned her kids school was shutting down at least three weeks. She has twins that are freshmen at milpitas high. The school is instituting an Online Learning problem thats not expected to be leave until friday. I dont know how exactly it works, but it will be through google classroom, google hangouts, google docs. Reporter but not all School Systems or students have easy access to such technology. In fact, some students dont even have adequate nutrition, which is why the Oakland School district will be providing thousands of meals students can pick up at 12 schools beginning tomorrow. Other schools have similar programs. Technology is going to have to be leveraged during this unprecedented time to keep the learning going, but what will be the most challenging is to figure out how to continue educating the kids that lack access to modern tools to learn outside of the original setting. We know in that time more and more coronavirus testing is going to be rolled out and, of course, the Health Experts are telling us they are anticipating more positive cases. We are calling for the home isolation of all seniors in the state of california. We are calling for the home isolation of all of those 65 years and older and those with chronic conditions. Reporter the governor today estimating 5. 3 million seniors will be affected. We recognize that social isolation for millions of californians is anxiety inducing, but we recognize what all of the science bears out and what we recognize around the rest of the world that we need to meet this moment head on. He stopped short of shutting down restaurants but advised to social distance patrons and establishments to reduce their capacity to half. Travis air force base in fairfield says a second person has now tested positive for coronavirus. Authorities say an adult dependent of a Service Member who lives in Solano County contracted the virus in the community. Travis says an active duty airman who lives in Contra Costa County also tested positive. Travis says their samples were sent to a Defense Department lab where the tests were confirmed. Both individuals are said to be in isolation at their homes off base. The navy says a sailor from Naval Base San diego tested presumptive positive for the coronavirus. The sailor was assigned to the Amphibious Assault ship uss boxer and if confirmed, it would be the first positive case for a sailor on board a navy ship. L the navy says the sailor is currently quarantined at home and those who came into close contact with the sailor are reportedly in selfisolation at their homes as well. The grand princess cruise ship was scheduled to love the port of oakland at 7 00 this evening, but its been delayed until tomorrow morning. Heres a live picture of the ship docked in oakland since monday after 21 people on board tested positive for the virus. Most of the passengers and crew disembarked last week and were sent to federal quarantine sites. About 340 crew members and six passengers from other countries remain on board tonight.
