First stop tonight is fremont where a few hundred people took to the streets, it was a diverse gathering and it was peaceful and it ended before the curfew. We have the message from the protesters tonight. Reporter it was organized by a group of fremont residents who wanted to take the black lives Matter Movement to the quiet suburbs fremont. Hundreds of people gathered at Washington High School in fremont for another evening of protest, hours prior a Memorial Service was held in minneapolis for george floyd whose death sparked outrage across the country. The demonstration began around 4 30 wednesday, protesters poured out of the High School Want to Police Headquarters two miles away, this man brought his young children. Support and solidarity, things are wrong. We have to make a stand, we have to teach these kids right from wrong. Reporter the crowd representing the diverse makeup of the city. Theres a lot of unity in the community and we are all together and understand that there is injustice. Reporter many wore masks and helps whole held signs, the group chanted George Floyds name, demonstrators calling on racism to and, not lives. Some of the Group Listing demands and the relationship between the police and the school district, to defund the police and knots to take money from police organizations. At the police stations speakers quoted Martin Luther king jr. Making passionate pleas for change. I have been waiting my entire life for fremont to show up like this for humanity. And the protest was peaceful and other than road closures it did not cause much of a disruption, many parents fighting for future generations, one African American mother saying she wants her daughter to know her life matters. Another protester scheduled for saturday. Another large and diverse crowd and is that it is not used to hosting political protest, how this movement is also taking shape in the suburbs. Reporter organizers say they are proud of their peaceful demonstration, they marched a short distance from hernandez park to city hall. This march and protest was organized for College Students and had a turnout that would make a large city proud, by police estimate 1000 people attended. Quite frankly i have never seen anything like this here, i think this is very historic and very important. Reporter these protesters say it is a good place to show solidarity with others demanding justice for george floyd. Every city even the suburbs show their support and show that we dont stand for whats going on. Reporter demonstrators pounded the pavement and spoke words from their heart. We have been fighting for a long time. Reporter words about the struggles of the black community drew emotion, the city has seen its racial makeup change, census data shows that was predominantly white 20 years ago, not so in 2020. Be respectful, stand up for what you believe in and do not back down. Reporter organizers say there was apprehension by some in the community when they heard about the protest being held here. A lot of people thought we were going to come to terrorize the city and they want to believe that the movement is dangerous but its not, we are fighting the danger. Reporter the goal is to too forward they say other actions are needed to sustain their movement. Reporter organizers say they are pleasantly surprised by the large turnout, they say it shows the power of the movement for change. On the peninsula students organized a peaceful protest in Mountain View this afternoon, several hundred people left from wells fargo as el camino road and then mount marched to Mountain View city hall. Police stopped traffic and officers thanked the people in the crowd for wearing masks. Most cities and counties in the bay area allow their curfews to expire after protests remained largely to peaceful, there are now just three cities that have curfews in effect, fremont, vallejo and concorde have curfews that started at eight a clock tonight and will run until 5 00 tomorrow morning. Many counties have lifted s, th Sheriff Department says that hes made more than 120 arrests after the curfew monday night, but that number drops to about 30 on tuesday night. The Sheriff Department says the curfew can be used as an effective tool to help restore order. The curfew that went into effect, a lot of the Community Members went home, they follow the guidelines, that allowed us to focus on that element that was still out on the streets and traveling up and down to the different cities. Authorities say they dont want to issue another curfew but they also say that curfews are still on the table just in case they need to use them again. The San Francisco mayor announced a plan to shift funding from the Police Department to the cities black community. The mayor and supervisors say they will lead a collaborative process on how that process will work the average yearly income for a black family and the city is 31,000 compared to e supervisor said that repurposing some of the funding would help level the Playing Field for the black committee. In Minnesota Three of the former Police Officers involved in the arrest of george Floyd Merritt made their first Court Appearances today. Thomas lane and J Alexander King are now charged with aiding and abetting floyd says, the judge sent bail at 750,000 each. The Attorney Says that he had only been on the job for four days and he asked him twice to let him rollover. Family and friends during civil rights leaders and many of us today for a Memorial Service to honor floyd, the service was filled with tears, prayer and some very touching tributes. I loved my brother we had so many memories together. Reporter to some george floyd was a beloved sibling. He was always well and always made people feel like you were special and nobody felt left out. Reporter to others he was a role model. He would stand up for any injustice everywhere. Reporter but the most moving tribute came in every body in the audience stood still for eight minutes and 48 seconds, the amount of time that floyd was held down by police, to remember a man who can stand no longer. Its a long time. If we calculated that is how long he was laying there. Theres no excuse, they had enough time. They had a private family servi set for saturday that is where floyd was born, following that there will be a service on monday in houston, thats where floyd grew up joe biden is scheduled to speak there. Developing news in the south bay, San Jose Police say a person is under arrest in a string of suspicious fires that broke out this evening. The first fire was reported just before 6 pm in the fight for the ranch. They totaled about 80 acres and are now 20 contained. Evacuation orders have just lifted and investigators are interviewing the suspect it was discovered that these fires were intentionally set. There was a witness that saw a person letting these fires off San Jose Police detained the suspect and my understanding is the suspect is still being detained until an id can be confirmed. Reporter fortunately no injuries were reported, one year attack on the fire had to be grounded due to somebody flying a drone in the area. One person was hospitalized in Critical Condition tonight after being rescued from the surf at ocean beach in San Francisco, firefighters responded to a distress call for two swimmers before six a clock tonight, both ended up pulled from the water off the great highway, one of the swimmers is in stable condition, the other is in Critical Condition. The water off of ocean beach can be very inviting on warm days like today, but lifeguards say the surf and rip currents can be treacherous even for people who are very good swimmers. Thursday the governor said the state is bracing for a possible second wave of covid19 cases. I imagine as we reopen in and through the process of the mixing thats come from the protests we will start to see that increase and we need to prepare for that. Health Officials Say the risk of transmission is especially high. When you are shouting or chanting or singing we are seeing more evidence that it can help project your droplets further and aerosolized. Reporter the Alameda County interim Health Officer says your gas and smoke from fires also increases the risk of coronavirus spreading. Anything that will make people cough or sneeze is going to protect droplets from your mouth. Safeway is being sued following a coronavirus outbreak at the Distribution Center in tracy, the widow filed the wrongful death lawsuit, he was a longtime worker inside from coronavirus. The lawsuit alleges systematic failures there, it claims that safeway conceal the outbreak, had employees working too close together and failed to implement Safety Measures soon enough. The cities mayor and Police Commissioner are calling the video quote deeply disturbing, they say that a full investigation will now be launched. Two wellknown civil rights attorney sadie oakland Police Department violated their own policies and a federal court order this week when they confronted protesters. We talked to some of the protesters about what they have seen and how thats different from what the police are saying. It was scary for sure. It started as one of the bay area is largest Peaceful Demonstrations following the Police Killing of george floyd in minnesota. Thousands of young people gathered at Oakland Tech High School and marched downtown. But things would soon turn it would before the 8 pm curfew. Teargas, flash bangs and smoke grenades rained down on a crowd of demonstrators one block from Police Headquarters. The group was little separate from the oakland tech demonstration and preparing molotov cocktails. We made sure that there were no elderly or children participating in that particular group. It was like a second complete march that formed. Samuel was in the group that got teargas, he just graduated from oakland tech and was part of the earlier march. I didnt see any violence or anybody breaking windows. Reporter every faceoff between officers and Protesters Police gave the order to disperse, seconds later, teargas. Up to this point i had been able to live in this bubble were i believe my Cities Police force would very willingly and you to do simi. I just turn my back. It is 20 minutes before curfew. Is moments like this that civil rights attorney jim shannon says violated opd policy. The opd cannot just ignore that policy because it is inconvenient to them. He helped draft the policy part of a court order mandating that opd reforms. Its as crowd control chemical agents should be used only if other techniques have failed. That order was done precisely for situations like this where there are nonviolent people and people acting totally inappropriately and how to separate one from the other. The opd chief says that the apartment is judicious when using teargas and only deploys it when theres a threat of violence or destruction of property. But in a letter to the chief, they also pointed to a demonstration on friday where he says Peaceful Protesters were hit with impact weapons like beanbag rounds. According to the policy these weapons might only be used against a specific individual who is engaging in conduct that poses an immediate threat of loss of life or serious bodily injury. There allowed for crowd control purposes. Weird is going to keep fighting for this policy. This policy was agreed to by the city of oakland. The american severed Civil Liberties union filed a lawsuit today on behalf of protesters, the lawsuit claims protesters civil rights were infringed monday night when Lafayette Park in front of the white house was forcibly cleared by police with tear gas. It happened right before the president s photo up in front of st. Johns church. The aclu also filed a Class Action Lawsuit against police in minnesota for what they call abuse against journalists covering the protest. A cnn reporter was arrested on live tv even after identifying himself as a member of the media. Two of the bay area largest demonstrations were organized by students, that is not all they had in common. Reporter the protest against the killing of george floyd by police and against racial inequality do to an estimated 10,000 people to Mission High School in San Francisco wednesday night, more than 15,000 protesters rallied in front marching down town, the protest were similar in keyways, they were both nonviolent and organized by students. I think it went well i could not have asked for anything more as long as everything was staged and we were able to speak our truth. Reporter brown says he had no idea the demonstration would be so large, they put the word out on social media just five days earlier. At first it was not getting that much traction and then i said even if its just me and you we will still march. Word began to spread through various Community Organizations stretching that they demonstration would be with the called nondestructive. Oakland police did use teargas to disperse crowds later that evening which sparked criticism, but the violence was absent. We want to give the community a voice and three that standing up against Police Brutality and this system of oppression in america. James taylor is a professor of politics at the university of San Francisco. Our young people should be commended, for the discipline theyre showing in the intelligence theyre showing. There are next to be impacted by law enforcement, even now as teenagers, they have disproportionate contact with law enforcement. Reporter organizers say young people cant bring change by themselves. This Week City Council unanimously approved asking the California Attorney general to determine if the shooting was justified. This is one way if we can help and bring trust into the community. If the state accepts the case it could be the first test of californias new deadly force law, it says lethal force must only be used when instead reasonable. Reporter taylors girlfriend is also upset the officers names have not been released. While the aclu is fighting that, police say it is because the officers have been getting death threats. For now this mural stands in his memory and leaders say this push for an outside review was in the works before the death and outrage over george floyd. We dont know if the attorney general will investigate this case, regardless there are two other investigations happening. One by san leandro police, the other by the Alameda County district rs have not fix any charges. Outrage over George Floyds death has reignited a battle over confederate monuments, and Richmond Virginia a crowd surrounded the statute of confederate robert e lee this weekend met at the statue be removed. During civil unrest and and other symbols of the old south have become targets for both graffiti and destruction. And in philadelphia cruise took down a statue of the former mayor and Police Commissioner frank rizzo, he became a symbol of racism back in the 70s when he infamously told locals to quote vote white. I was down there for a long time. Its the same thing. The same thing happened to me. Reporter baldwin says he was also the victim of Police Brutality, he said in antioch Police Department officer puts the knee on the back of his neck. I was no criminal i was not doing any crime anyway just sitting in the car. Reporter police say baldwin was drunk acting erratically and violently resisted officers, baldwin says an officer yanked him from the car and slammed him face first into the ground, he said a second officer then put his knee on the back of his neck forcing his head to scrape the pavement. Both officers and punished him. Daltons mother came outside when she heard the commotion. Wade said her son was not moving. I said wake up, please wake up the officer never got off my sons neck. Reporter they filed a lawsuit, it settled. Papers said baldwin was drunk and had been wandering the street yelling at people, they said police used force because he violently fought with the officers. A source close to the incident rejected any comparison to the floyd case, but mother and son say they do see similarities. For me to witness george floyd on that floor on that ground being murdered, a grown man calling out to his mother. The only thing i can do is try to turn my head to look at my mom. Reporter wayne says theyre both scarred. My son had dreams and aspirations thats what i remember my son being. Reporter the case settled, neither officer was disciplined and both remain on the force. The state of nevada is allowing casinos to reopen starting today. And South Lake Tahoe officials are no longer issuing citations for those who travel to the region. Across the state line in nevada gaming can resume with new Safety Measures. Casinos are reducing the number of table games and slot machines and used to allow for social distancing.
