Tell us about it what it the rest of to get there today. Thank you very much, alex. It is a great date for Santa Clara County and a great day for bta and bart together. It took as many years and as much involvement as you well have been tracking. I heard in the opening remarks that the project was two years late. We broke ground on this amazing historic project on april 12 of 2012. We are now in 2020. Eight years later we are finally cutting the ribbon. It means quite a lot. Not only to the people who will be using it, but all the residents who have been investing through that sales tax that was passed way back in 2000 to bring 16 miles. These are the first 10 miles through the bart district and into Santa Clara County. It is a great day. You are the head of the bta. And then we have a bus center also thats connected to both the bart station and connects to the bta light rail station. And that Transit Center has nine bus routes that come into it. The bart station has the Transit Center with six bus routes that connects to weather. The connectivity and the inner modality is going to be seamless. We have worked with the bart team so that we can make sure that our schedules as the bart trains are arriving our buses are also arriving in passengers can transfer. We are hoping that there can continue. Obviously, this is quite a time to be opening these two brandnew bart stations in the south bay in the middle of this pandemic. How are these two stations we imagine to make sure that writers and obviously bart employees will stay safe . The stations, the infrastructure cannot be reimagined but the protocol for how people approach the station and how they navigate through the station and how the personnel and the Customer Center act. Bart together with bta we are following the protocols established by her Public Health officers. And the guidelines from cdc. Bart operates a 10 car train. There is ample room on the platform to spread out. You need to that space to socially distance. I know that you are still writing this high and celebrating the groundbreaking today and the opening of these two new stations. Where do we stand on the next extension into downtown san jose and santa clara the next extension, the last six miles is rolling along very well. We are finalize the configuration of how we will bring the trains to berryessa through downtown san jose and the terminus at the santa clara station and the caltrans station. That is in place. We need funding from the federal government and we will submit our application for the federal funds later on in the months. After that, if all lights are go, we will have a groundbreaking hopefully next year. It will likely not be open to riders for maybe another 10 years . If all goes well the projections are sometime in the 2027 year. Thank you for coming on and congratulations on this huge accomplishment for transit in the south bay. One of those two pieces of advice is to take the stairs whenever possible and bring your own food to cook outs and other events. As for large gatherings, encourage masks for everyone attending rallies, protests or sporting events. Everyone should socially distance and regularly wash your hands. Joining us now is alex my skull and alex you just got finished talking with the man that knows the ins and outs and the details about these new warnings. That would be dr. Anthony fauci. We havent seen him in the mos visible faces in the entire country and now from this interview. The thing that really struck me was i asked him about the coronavirus vaccine. He told me hes cautiously optimistic that we will have a vaccine by the end of this year. Thats a lot faster than what was initially talked about. People could start to get vaccinated. That is a much faster timeline and would allow anyone to get back to what they were used to doing before. Some of the other things we talked about, crowds. We have seen these massive protests all over california and all over the country. Many of them and masks and some of them not. He is worried about that. I said what if we dont see a massive spike. He said its an issue. I asked him about the fact the President Trump announced hes going to start rallies next week. He said that is incredibly risky. He had made his views known about that to the president and the president chose to follow other peoples recommendations on that front. He is concerned about what some see as a second coronavirus wave and a lot of people see it as a continuation of the first wave. What does he think about the pace of reopening . Year in california and many other states were starting to see a spike in cases. Does he think we loosen those restrictions to quickly . He would not go there. He was politically correct on that front. His guidelines say youre not supposed to do a lot of this reopening unless you see a drop in cases. In california, an increase in cases and we are seeing reopening. So i said, doesnt this feel like why couldnt we have opened up a few weeks ago when the cases were lower. It feels arbitrary. And he said i dont want to secondguess anyone but follow my guidelines. It is an interesting time to try to figure out where all of this goes. A lot of the messaging depending on who you listen to is so interesting. A lot of people are confused when it comes to coronavirus. Youve heard dire predictions about the second wave in the fall months. By some estimates a lot more people, 100,000 potentially could die here. The dr. Fauci have any thoughts on whether he thinks that is where things could be headed toward the end of the year . He did express concern. One of the variables is if we got that vaccine by the end of the year that could dramatically change that equation. I just happened to be drinking from my favorite mug which says ktvu on it. I am always thinking of you. It has been way too long since we talked. Cheers to you and your team. Those mugs are very hard to come by. If anyone deserves one, it is you for all the hard work. We are spacing people six feet apart and making sure that the touch points are white continual lesslie like handles, doorknobs, disposable menus and theyre directed to our website there has our menu so they can view it on their own personal device. We are doing everything we can. I want to get to the fact that work came a couple days ago thaT Restaurants can offer Outdoor Dining. I want to know where you stand. Were you close to shutting your doors completely or not surviving or are you okay . Summer not reopening at all. Right. I think were going to see more and more not reopen as those loan funds come do. We have been doing okay knock on wood. Are very superstitious. From the beginning we started offering things like which people can make from home and that has been one of the things that brought us success. We have been putting ourselves in the mindset of how people tr kits and boxes grocery boxes, meet boxes. We want our vendors to sustain themselves as well. They only sell and restaurants, so we are trying to make sure we get those great products out to the consumer. So we are doing okay and we are hanging in there. We did take out a loan which certainly helped and we about eight staff on hand out of 18. Hopefully as the customers come back little by little we can bring on more of our staff that were missing right now. How long do you think it will take before you get back to your prepandemic normality . You know, i really think that nothing is going to be certain until that vaccine comes around. I think right now diner show up who have been chomping at the bit waiting to get back into some kind of normalcy. You have a lot of folks who wont feel safe to go out for five months or longer if they are immune compromised or if they are just wary of being out in public. And so ready really dont expect ever to get back to where we were in the same exact way once there is a vaccine, we are uncertain how the economy will be and who will have money to spend on going out.
