And a report called castle mont high, cheating and students, a civil grand jury found that students were graduating without earning a diploma. However, 25,000 new laptops the School District order to help students with district learning will not be ready in time. Millions of unemployed americans will stop getting an extra 600 and unemployment benefits. We have the latest on the stalled negotiations in congress, good morning, allie rasmus. Reporter white house discussions will continue today, it is not likely there will be in agreement on extending the extra 600 per week, by the end of the day. August 1, that is when the additional federal Funding Program ends. Millions of people on unemployment will no longer receive the 600 a week under a program called the federal pandemic unemployment assistance program. As of last week, 473,000 californians had applied for the program, making up about one third of the nations total claims for the pandemic related assistance. Not only is it a high number of claims, but the fact that businesses are closing permanently, and workers who were initially furloughed are now being turned into layoffs. Congress is working on a new stimulus bill to extend unemployment benefits, but there is no agreement yet on what to do about the extra 600 a week for people who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Congressional republicans have discussed reducing the payment from 600 to just an extra 200 a week. California legislators and our state are discussing the idea of creating our own statewide Pandemic Assistance Program to supplement the federal program and bridge the gap from 200 to 600. At least 31 employees at coscos in sunnyvale, san jose, gilroy and mountain have tested positive for the virus this month. Researchers say that they are exploring a new concept called super spreaders to explain how and why covid19 clusters pop up in some environments, and not others. Apparently, some people appear, we dont know yet a but appear to spread it more easily than others so all it takes is one person to come in and spread it among a group. Health experts say it can be safe to shop at a business where employees tested positive for the virus, but shoppers would be able to better protect themselves by wearing a face mask, practice social distancing and regular wash hands. The husband of a nurse that died of the coronavirus has passed away. Now the couples family is trying to cope with the loss of both parents. Last week we shared the story of 62yearold Gwendolyn Robinson who worked at the Veterans Home and died of covid 19 area at the time of her death her husband, keith was in intensive care battling the virus as well. This morning we had learned that he has died at the age of 61. The couples son tells us that he and three siblings are trying to cope with the loss of both parents, and just a matter of a few weeks. The bailiff also tested positive two weeks ago and five employees were infected back in march. So far the citys jails have appointed major outbreaks. 24 new inmates tested positive, but they are not showing any symptoms. They are isolated from the general population. A firefighter in petaluma who tested positive is recovering, and may be back to work on tuesday. We dont know his name, he tested positive july 23, after developing mild symptoms during a 48 hour shift. He and 14 other crewmembers were quarantined, all testing negative for the virus. The firefighter is not sure how he became infected. Because of the pandemic, the california prison population is below 100,000, the lowest level in 30 years. The state has released more than 14,000 inmates since mid march, the department of correction says they have 1400 inmates in custody who are infected with coronavirus. The stockton and ventura youth correctional facilities are not taking more children. The Santa Clara CountySheriffs Offices tracking coronavirus cases at the elmwood correctional facility in milpitas. 20 inmates are now infected, 16 of them just tested positive on wednesday.
