This is my first time doing my active part as an american citizen and ive always been pay tree quote pick and proud of my country and to do that means a lot to me. I feel im doing a part in our democracy, being active and doing my part. Reporter santa clara is posting the hundreds of thousands of ballots already returned, but the tally wont be returned until Election Night. Turnout is expected to break new ground, as well. More than 617,000 south bay voters have already voted this election as of sunday. The last president ial election had 724,000 voters total, and Election Officials say they are on track to beat the record turnout seen in 2008. They say in a signature doesnt match or is missing, they will reach out to that registered voter. I believe theyll take three attempts to try to reach that voter to make shoot ballot is counted. Heather . Yeah, that was my experience when i voted here in San Francisco, maureen, they asked me twice did you seen it. So always a good reminder. Maureen naylor, thank you. Pollsters are showing very close races in the swing states that are set to decide the president ial election with slim leads for joe biden in all of them. Lets go ahead now and take a look at some of the polling. In pennsylvania, biden is up by 3 points in wisconsin, his lead is more than 6 points. In florida, biden is up by 2 points. Biten also has a threepoint edge in nevada, and just half a point in arizona. A federal judge today threw out a lawsuit by republicans excuse me, filed by republicans to sky too invalidate about 127,000 ballots in houston. Conservative activists said the votes should be thrown out because they were cast at drive through Polling Centers set unduring the pandemic. The judge, though, said the opponents did not have standing to bring the lawsuit. The Texas Supreme Court rejected a similar challenge over the weekend. A record 1. 4 million early votes have already been cast there in harrison county, as democrats have hopes of flipping texas. . After a busy weekend on the campaign trail, both President Trump and joe biden made their final push today, trying to reach any voters still on the fence as they head to the polls. Add siders and strategists say this race continues to tighten, even in the 11th hour folks, ohio, one more day reporter the 2020 election is almost here. We are going to win this state, and we are going to win four more years in our great white house. Reporter the president ial candidates and their running mates have grueling schedules on their final fulldy of campaigning. President Trump Holding five rallies in four states. And former Vice President joe biden is focusing on ohio and pennsylvania. Tomorrow we have the opportunity to put an end to a presidency that has divide this nation tomorrow we can put an end to a president who has failed to protect this Nation Reporter a real clear politics average of National Polls has biden leave trump, but his leads has narrowed over the last month. Analysts say there are a handful of states to watch for, and an indication of who will win the white house, including pennsylvania, and florida. Trump scan lose to the sunbelt, but to win the presidency, he needs to hold all of the sunbelt, as well as pick off pennsylvania or a michigan up north. Reporter but they say also keep an eye on states that the candidates have been trying to flip. If georgia goes blue, i think thats the final nail in the coffin. Reporter businesses across the city are bracing for unrest following the election. Analyst says people need to be patient for a result, because it could take days, each weeks for a clear winner. In washington, lauren blanchard, fox news. Okay. Lets take a closer look now at the road to 270 with david mcewen, Political Science pro if it fesser at sonoma state. Thank you for being here on such a big day. Does either candidate have a wider path to that 270 electoral votes . Yeah. I mean, if you think about it, donald trump won pennsylvania, he won michigan and won wisconsin in 2016 by 100,000 combined votes. That means he has a narrow path. Florida is a must win for donald trump, and pennsylvania is going to be absolutely key. We might see some movement back and forth in pennsylvania proper. Joe biden was born in pennsylvania, obviously lives near there, in terms of delaware, so pennsylvania is critical for biden. Democrats have a wider map. Thats evidence of the early vote and the big numbers that were seeing, but donald trump is putting up a fight, and they believe, the Trump Campaign believes, that with those shy trump voters that theyll pull it out here at the last minute. Yeah, we mentioned just how close it is as some of those key battleground states. Talk a little more about what you will be watching for come tomorrow night. Right. So we want to Pay Attention to a couple of things, pinch county, florida, thats absolutely going to be key. Democrats should win miami dade, northern florida should be an area for donald trump. So pinellas will be key. And in pennsylvania, since it is crucial to both parties. Pay close attention to bucks county pennsylvania, new home, and also no North Hampton county, pennsylvania. Move over to the western side of pennsylvania. Eary county will be absolutely important, and then wayky shaw county, wisconsin. As that county goes so goes wisconsin. Joe biden doesnt have to win that county. He has to get 35, 38 if he wants to have a chance to win statewide in that state. And what do you make of sort of this final push by the candidates, and when you take a look at just where they are focusing in these final few hours . Right. If you think about those working class trump voters, the growth of those voters within pennsylvania, thats why the president has spent so much time there the last 48 hours there, and over the last month. Joe biden, favorite son of pennsylvania, he needs those voters, as well, because those particular set of voters voters that have flocked away from the Democratic Party for 40 or 50 years. So this is a battle or the heart and soul of winning, but what youre Party Looks Like on november 4th. The stakes here are huge, and where these parties are going to 2024, with these demographic shifts. That is going to be a huge component of all future campaigns. Yeah, it certainly is. Obviously we are not expecting a big surprise here in california when it comes to the president race, but before we let you go, i wanted to talk with you have about the propositions. Three are the most contentious, 15, 19, and 22. 15 and 19 having to do with property taxes, 22 asking if app based drivers should be considered independent contractors. What are you sort of seeing in regards to those three propositions . Well, thank you for letting us talk about these ballot measures, because theyre hugely expensive. 22 is going to be close. This is the most expensive ballot proposition in the history of california. It will be in that 51, 52, 53, it will be very narrow if it passes. 19 is right behind. 15 is right on the cusp. It will be close as well. While most go down, its very expensive to get a yes vote, and thats what youre seeing, because when you add in 15, 19, you add in 21, 22, those are pout of every 4 dollars that have been spent. Three out of every four dollars. And not a lot of attention paid to those propositions, but, boy, a lot of money thrown at them. An an awful lot of money. Yeah. Thank you so much. Now sanford researchers moving onto phase three, which they hope will produce more success and more importantly, a vaccine by as early as next year. Reporter walter, wearing orange, is the first of 1,000 local people who are signing up to be subjects in stanfords covid19 trials. Vaccines are going to be probably the best way moving forward, and then i have the possibility to kind of contribute to this effort of developing a vaccine. Its going to be kind of a small effort on my part to try to do what i can for a number of other people. Reporter stanford represents one of 180 global sites, testing a new global vaccine developed by johnson and johnson. The 23yearold is a recent College Graduate who does in person tutoring. The body will provide the spike protein, and then the body will then make immune responses by that protein. Both groups will be studied for two years to judge effectives. What they want to see in the cases of what make see go is do more people get inconnected than on the vaccine. So they have to wait for that to be statistically significant. Its not so much about me, but hopefully my story or my experience can encourage other, to go out there and try to engage in this process, or, you know, just generally were all trying to play our part. Researchers hope to have all 1,000 people for this group selected by the end of this year. If all goes well, the fda could give approval for widespread use of this experimental vaccine sometime next year, about four months after that. Were live in san jose. Jesse gary, ktvu fox 2 news. Well head back to you. So jesse, the fda could give approval to this vaccine within a few months, but sound like these patients are going to continue to be monitored for a couple of years down the road. Why is that . Well, you want to make sure, alex. The fda can give early approval, but researchers want to make sure they have uncovered any and all possibilities with any type of side effectors reverse effects. You can continue to study this and find not only is it effective against covid19, but can also work for Something Else they didnt realize it worked on. So more is better than less, but the fda can give approval for for more months. San franciscos department of homelessens today offed the next steps to transition people out temporary housing that would set up a response to the pandemic. Back in april, the city first began using shelterinplace hotels as a temporary solution to help stem the spread of the coronavirus among homeless populations. City Officials Say the response was swift and has shown to be successful in keeping the coronavirus Positivity Rate at or below that of the greater San Francisco population, but Officials Say it was always planned as a temporary solution, and starting this month, the program will stop accepting residents to hotels and begin to focus on rehousing efforts. Housing is the only permanent solution to ending homelessness, and now more than ever, it is the best form of healthcare, which is why we are focused on housing people, and making an investment in that. Twitter says it will not allow candidates to claim they have won the election until the results are official, while facebook will label misleading next posts and in some case reese move that content. Joining us to talk more about this is larry, the ceo of connect safely. Larry, good to have you on here. Lets start with twitters strategy here. They said theyre not going to allow candidates to claim they have won the election until the results are finalized here. How is twitter going to respond if someone steps up and claims victory before that happens . Well, presumably they would take down the tweet, if thats exactly what they wind up doing. Now, i suspect they could do that in the indicates of the president and probably senators and congress people. Whether that could scale to every elected office in the land im not a sure of, but certainly part of that is the acknowledgment that candidates dont get to determine if they win. Thats done by official bodies that count. So theyre going to wait for the Election Results, or at least the network predictions, which are not official, but weve sort of relied on those here in the past. And facebook and twitter, putting these labels on misleading posts having to do with the election, essentially letting people know that the results of the election are not final yet. Do you thank that goes far enough, or do you think these Companies Need to remove some of those posts that are leading people in the wrong direction . I think whatever they do its going to be problematic, because first of all, someone will accuse them of censorship, because theyre taking down something that somebody posted. Weve seen that happening already. But i think that the more they do to kind of clarify to the public that this information has not been confirmed, nat you cannot rely on it, just because somebody has declared victory doesnt mean they get inaugurated to that office. I think thats important. Were expecting a fair amount of chaos after the election. We may not know the results for some period of time, we may know by the time we go to bed tuesday night, may not know until the next day or next week, but we will eventually know, and we dont want to see way use, and the problem is that Companies Like your own, the broadcast networks, the mainstream newspapers, they are going to be accurate. Theyre going to give the information that they know to be true, or to the best of their knowledge, but we cant say that for individuals who post on facebook or even candidates, and so its really important that whether or not americans agree with whatever the results are, that they agree these are the legitimate and actual results, not just somebodys claim. And obviously you know that a lot of these social Media Companies, facebook in particular, you know, they were really caught offguard by the foreign interference we saw last time around in the 2016 election. What do you think were the key lessons that were learned for these social Media Companies from the last election that are going to be allowed this time around, two try to slow the spread of misinformation in . The key lesson was to put a lot of thought going ahead of these elections, and they have literally been planning for yes, sir. One thing that frightens me is in a significant number of people dont believe the election was legitimate, they somehow feel that the other side stole it. If thats the case, really worry for the future of this country, and that is something that will be amplified on social media. I could seizely see social media being used to claim that, you know, biden didnt win, or trump didnt win, or whoever gets eventually inaugurated somehow isnt a legitimate president. And that could be an issue. Of course there are many that dont like the fact that donald trump is president , that dont mean they dont acknowledge that he is president. If we cant do that on january 20th, we have a real problem in this country. I was reading that google is going to be going step farther further than facebook and twitter. They say theyre not going to allow misleading claims about voting. Theyll remove any content is that falsely claims mailin ballots have been manipulated. How are Companies Like google and these other social media giants, what resources do they have to do this kind of of Fact Checking on the fly. Imagine theres just going to be teams of people working overtime tomorrow night. Its a very good question. I think the answer is third party Fact Checking organizations. There are a number of organization throughout they have world that make it their business to check the accuracy of political statements. Most people have heard of politifact, there is snopes. Com, Many Organizations that dedicate themselves to checking out the accuracy. I think that they will look at these organizations. They may have their own people on staff as well, but its difficult, because its very hard to be the arbiter of truth. Thats one of the things that journalist tries to do, and usually they get it right, but not always, but ultimately these organizations have to make sure they have it right before they take something down. We saw that the new york that post story. Always good to have you. Thanks so much. Hurricane eta has rapidly intensified. It is now a major category 4 hurricane nearing landfall in Central America.
