Back to the coronavirus pandemic, some counties are seeing sharp rises in the number of hospitalizations. If rates continue to climb hospitals could exceed capacity. This week california recorded its highest number of cases since the start of the pandemic. They reported 15,000 new cases on saturday. That is the first time that many people have been hospitalized since mid august. Smith is here now after talking with healthcare workers about the new numbers. Reporter the resounding message is hospitals are able to treat patients now but if cases continue to rise at the same rate, hospitals will become overwhelmed. As the number of coronavirus cases continue to rise, hospitals in the area are seeing the impacts. Our unit is approaching full capacity for coronavirus patients. Reporter Regional Medical center has a dedicated coronavirus unit maxed at 35 patients. The hospital is anticipating that unit can reach capacity in the coming weeks and they overflow unit could be opened if needed. We are prepared to take care of any search that comes our way. Reporter Santa Clara County solved the highest seven day average of new cases since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of patients in the icu has doubled to more than 50 patients in santa clara, while that may not seem like a lot, what is troubling is how fast the number rose. That kind of rise is unsustainable, it is 100 in two weeks we have to look at things we were doing in march like canceling surgeries to make room. Reporter Angela Rogers works at the icu in stanford, that hospital has seen a rise in hospitalizations. We are fearful of what the next 26 weeks will bring. Reporter it is not just Santa Clara County but throughout the state. The city is on track to exceed hospitalizations if the curve is not flattened. We have more than doubled hospitalizations in the last day or so. It is rising at a breathtaking pace. My plea is to try new very hard not to meet in groups. Yesterday texas reported a one day high of 12,000 new cases. The Texas National guard has also sent a team to el paso, 36 soldiers have been called in to help overwhelmed morgues. 858 people have died from the coronavirus in el paso including 300 this month. The cdc issued new guidelines this weekend urging people traveling to get tested before you leave. The cdc is recommending people not travel at all for the thanksgiving holiday, they say the risk of getting or spreading the coronavirus jumps with travel. The agency is also warning against large holiday gatherings but they say if you do, eat outside if possible, limit the number of people in the kitchen and have one person served the food and get tested if possible. 50 of infections happening are caused by people with no symptoms. A pickup truck burst into flames on i 80 in hercules today. The chp says the truck was going eastbound near Willow Avenue at 115 this afternoon when it caught fire.
