Excited. Well take a look at how teachers are preparing amid a major shortage. My from jack londons square. This is morning time to the nine. And todays wednesday, august 16th. Were looking live at the Golden Gate Bridge from our camera at sutro tower. That camera is amazing. By the way. Hd it can zoom into all these things. We see these beautiful pictures and it is a little bit foggy, although the fog should burn off a little later, according to steve. And well be talking about the weather in just a little bit. All right. We have been talking about our kids returning to school after the summer and with excitement comes a bit of stress to start School Health experts recommend the big tip for parents is to have an open ear and listen. Another tip is to plan a shopping trip to get all the back to School Necessities ahead of time. Sometimes a shopping trip alone can create excitement for the new school year. New books, pens, backpacks. Folders. I used to love that myself. Another tip highlighted by stress. Org is to schedule your kids meeting. Sometimes its a good thing to break them out of a routine. If it allows them to relax and play outside or just go outside and be spontaneous. Just dont have anything scheduled. Welcome to the nine garcias back. Yeah welcome back. I missed you guys. Its kind of fun to watch from home. Is that okay . Sleep in . Yeah sleep until 6 a. M. I get it. No, we understand. Its funny, man. I think, you know, even though were all a bit removed from the first day of school, i remember those feelings of, like, make me see my friends again. Should i wear this outfit . I mean, that excitement is something that i think parents really do need to nurture in their children. Yeah it is. And i remember two something i was it was nerve wracking as well. So but, you know, its still its still an exciting time to head back to school, right . Yeah. So yeah, look, its been a little anxiety in my house. Yeah just, you know, like its something new to new grade, right . Yeah. Yeah you know, are my friends going to be there also once, like, once your daughter is hit middle school, its a whole new campus. Will i even know how to find the Science Building . So i think as much prep work and i know you and your wife are so good about that, talking about feeling things and getting together with their friends and having a few discussions. I love that. I cant. Why i want to see those first day pictures when they come. Students, by the way, across the bay in San Francisco here are dealing with more than just first day jitters. Unfortunately this morning, the district like so many others nationwide, is grappling with the Teacher Shortage. Ctvs Bailey Ocarroll live in the city here with how the community really is coming together on this first day to kick off a whole new school year. Bailey garcia, good morning. Its students have gone inside their classrooms at this point this morning. Its just past 9 a. M. So we did watch them get here. They were very excited. One little girl picking out her outfit. Her parents told us she wanted to have a crazy outfit, but they were excited to get back into the classroom here today. But of course, we cannot mention the first day of School Without mentioning what many parents and people all across the bay area are talking about in regards to schools starting up this fall, which is the Teacher Shortage and how thats affecting students, parents, but also where we stand here in San Francisco. Just with how big that shortage is. I do want to bring in cassandra teachers unin here in San Francisco. Cassandra how many teachers are we missing in San Francisco right now . At last check, there was 174 job openings. Still vacant, still hired for. Thats just for certificated. The teachers and classrooms. We also have an additional 170 or more of para educators. Those are classroom aides who work directly with students. What needs to be done to fill those vacancies, in your opinion . Theres multiple things that need to be happening, but the very first one is a raise, right . Were in a contract negotiation. We tried to force a deal to come together in may before the school year would have ended. That would help people decide to stay. And those that were looking to enter into the career or enter the district could be incentivized to come in. And then another one is really around whether or not this career is optional for folks that. Apologize for losing bailey carrolls report here as she is in San Francisco, students are heading back to class for the first day. Theyre across the bay in the east bay. The story is the same as Fremont Unified School district is marking its first day. Back in class, we took some video this morning for you. Admission San Jose Elementary School saw parents dropping off their children for their first day of school. We talked with one dad who was dropping off his children there in fourth grade and kindergarten. Im excited to the summer is finally back to school. Weve got the older one through. So the younger ones starting. So we kind of know whats going on. So helpful to have an older sibling, right . The children said theyre excited to see their friends again and that is what school is all about at that age. Are moving on to this story right now. A four Year Old Girl has died. Her father seriously hurt in mission bay after they were hit by a car at a busy intersection. The crash happened shortly after five last night at fourth and king streets near the caltrain station and about a block from oracle park two. There are two right turn lanes at that intersection. Well, a silver suv in the second turn. Lane was there when it struck that family. The vehicle and the driver that was involved in this incident remained on scene. The driver is cooperating with our investigation. The any impairment due to drugs or alcohol does not to be does not appear to be a factor. Well, the area was especially busy because of the time of day and because there was a giants game at oracle last night. There were also several Traffic Control officers in the area and they were able to evaluate the family first. Now, the mother was not seriously hurt physically, but the little girl and her father were taken to a hospital with life threatening injuries due to the injuries. The four year old female succumbed to her injuries and was declared deceased at the hospital. Traffic control officers who work at that intersection say drivers are usually interested in getting out of town. So theyre usually watching the traffic light, not looking at the crosswalks. Officials are not releasing information about the driver, including whether any charges will be filed. Crews has recovered the vehicle and a Company Spokesperson spokesperson confirmed that workers remove the vehicle from the wet concrete on city streets yesterday afternoon. Sfgate reports that people who live in the area saw the car stuck at a construction site on golden gate avenue between fillmore and steiner streets. The car had no passengers inside. Lets get out the door here. A lot of sunshine greeting us this morning. Its a nice thing to see. Steve paulson. It is. I think after today, well start seeing more clouds rolling in low and high clouds. Were caught in between the low to the west, which was off Southern California yesterday. Its lifted northward. Its not going anywhere. In fact, if anything, i think its going to move in a little closer starting tomorrow as temps will begin to cool and drag in a lot of cloud cover on on friday, maybe some scattered showers. Still moisture streaming northward from Southern California. Southern arizona and nevada going right along the spine of the sierra into tahoe, truckee, northeast california. Shasta las and also up towards northeast northwest california as well. We have some low clouds. Most of its about gone, but theres a little bit more today than we saw yesterday. And i think its a sign of things to come. Today, though, you can see caught there in between. So everything looks good today, sunny. It could be a few high clouds, but i think overall, todays sunny, thats a pretty good activity. Yesterday it favored more south shore and also towards interstate 80. More so than 50 north. But it could easily change today. So if youre going up there, keep that in mind. Upper 90s to near 100 for a few inland today. After today, though, i think well start to ease up on on some of these warmer temps coast and bay should drop a couple of degrees today just by the mere fact that we had a little bit more of a breeze, a little bit more fog today. But so todays nice today tomorrow should be pretty good by friday though i think well cloud it up. A weekend will be kind of coming of some fog and sunny and cooler temps. What is now Tropical Storm hillary. This will be where all the focus, all the attention and all the projections between now and monday are going to be here as it moves up the coast up of baja and moves in somewhere around san diego. Most projections taken in the Southern California, the high desert, then in between tahoe and las vegas, somewhere around there, it could easily come over us as well. But these projections are all changing rapidly depending on what forecast projections you look at. If we do, if we do get the moisture, we could have some serious august rain for us or in tahoe. I mean, that would be a lot of rain for us in august. As you know, ive seen some areas in tahoe with over two and one half inches forecast. So its just a matter of sorting out the details. Its just too far away to be to give a forecast. Its more of just an outlook or a hey, look at this is really what it is. Sunny today, breezy, warm to hot inland. One more day. Temps cool down upper 90s for a few 60s 70s closer to the coast. And tomorrow well cool it off. Clouded up on friday. Your weekend looks good. Monday, tuesday could be dealing with a lot of tropical clouds. Thank you, steve. All right, coming up on mornings on two, the nine Illegal Dumping is proving to be a major problem near some reservoirs in the east bay. Were live with a look at how east bay mud is trying to combat the issue. Plus, ktvu is partnering with making strides against Breast Cancer this year. When we come back, were sitting down with some of the organizers to talk about the upcoming preparations ahead of the big walk event in a few months im orlando and im living with hiv. I dont have to worry about daily hiv pills because i switched to everyothermonth cabenuva. For adults who are undetectable, cabenuva is the only complete longacting hiv treatment you can get every other month. Its two injections from a healthcare provider. Now when i have people over, hiv pills arent on my mind. Dont receive cabenuva if youre allergic to its ingredients, or if youre taking certain medicines, which may interact with cabenuva. Serious side effects include allergic reactions, postinjection reactions, liver problems, and depression. If you have a rash and other allergic reaction symptoms, stop cabenuva and get medical help right away. Tell your doctor if you have liver problems or Mental Health concerns, and if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or considering pregnancy. Some of the most common side effects include injectionsite reactions, fever, and tiredness. If you switch to cabenuva, with everyothermonh cabenuva, im good to go. Ask your doctor about cabenuva today. Childrens first day of school. I know San Francisco. Some other districts are heading back today. Make it a great school year. Lets talk about whats happening overseas here. Bad behavior by tourists. A woman was caught on camera climbing across italys historic trevi fountain to fill her water bottle. Visitor is seen climbing across some rocks to reach the center of that 18th century landmark in rome. She then captures water coming from one of the spouts to fill the bottle. Fountain is surrounded by signs that tell people not to touch it, not to climb it, and do not use the water as a source. A guard shows up, blows the whistle, confronts her. We dont know yet if she was fined or detained, but you have to assume everybody there has a phone. I dont know if she thought she was going to get away with it or no big deal. Ive been thinking about it. Im like like, what was your what were you thinking . Im just going through my mind. Do you just not care . Right . Do you just like breaking the rules . What are you going to do with the water . What do you do with the water . Maybe she thought it was special and she was going to keep it as a souvenir, which pam pointed out earlier. You cant even bring it on the plane. Right, right, right. So, i mean, you know, people are so entitled. And now that everyone has a phone, were beginning to see that. Right . Right. Before we didnt know. But now you see theres a lot of people doing weird things is in the video. Thats right. All right. Lets move on to this story now. Happening now, work is underway to clean up trash and even abandoned cars in the watershed next to an important reservoir. Ktvu rasmus joins us live from morocco hills where east bay mud representatives say they need people to help with this problem. Ali yeah, its a big problem when it comes to people dumping illegal trash and even abandoned vehicles. We are on pinehurst road. This is in the moraga hills. You see a lot of activity next to us. This is one of three tow trucks that is out here on the side of the road. And if you follow this rappelle line about 300ft down this hillside, this embankment is an old abandoned car, is a white car, very hard to see, kind of buried between a lot of the grass and shrubbery there. But this is part of the watershed for the Upper San Leandro Reservoir. And that provides Drinking Water and the water for east bay mud customers. So when you have stuff like abandoned cars and trash and Hazardous Material in the watershed, you got to get that stuff out. And thats what the cleanup is about here this morning. East bay mud representatives say Illegal Dumping near their reservoirs has become a big problem since the pandemic last month, they did a similar cleanup around the Upper San Leandro Reservoir and removed eight abandoned cars from the area and they ended up cleaning up more than eight tons of trash. This land and this water supply is two valuable. Dont bring your trash here. This is what we drink. What we live off of. And its a complicated process to do these types of cleanups and to remove these abandoned cars. They have to coordinate east bay mud. Does with the county and other Government Agencies to partially close down the streets. So its complicated and again, expensive. In the past three years, the Water Utility has had to spend more than 200,000 just to clean up this trash. And that work is underway right now. If we take you back out here live again, you see, i dont know if we can see from up here, but there is a tow truck operator, contractor hired that is about 200ft down on the side of the road here. He has to hook a hook onto this abandoned car and then they have to hoist this thing up all the way up here to the road. And i was talking to some of the tow truck operators here and they said not only is this physically challenging work going downhill here and then climbing back up, but theres a lot of hazards like poison oak in this area. One of the tow truck operators told us the last time he did this back in july, he got poison oak. And so its not fun work. He says its not something people are chomping at the bit to do. Exactly when it comes to this type of assignment. But this work is expected to last for much of the morning. Theyre planning on removing a three abandoned cars. This is one of them. And cleaning up at least a dozen illegal trash sites near this reservoir. Live in the mariah hills, ali rasmus, ktvu fox two news. Well, one person is in the hospital after being hit by a vehicle in alameda this is happening just a short time ago on clemente avenue, not far from the alameda marina. These are live pictures from the scene of the incident. You can see the one Police Cruiser there on the scene right now. Alameda police has the intersection closed for the investigation. As you can see right here, its expected to open within the hour. We are told. And were waiting on an update on the victims condition , along with more information about the driver involved in this incident. But well keep you updated on air online. Well have an update for you at noon as well. All right. Now to this story. Us consumers seem to be shrugging off higher prices. Retail sales were up 0. 7 in july. Department stores showed a nearly 1 increase. Restaurant sales rose 1. 4 and online sales were up nearly 2. In milwaukee, President Biden touted his bid nomics, saying inflation is decreasing as wages are rising, pay for low wage workers has grown at the fastest rate in two decades. Wages are growing faster than inflation, folks, thats biodynamics. Its about growing an economy by strengthening the middle class. Some of the declines in sales in the report were at furniture stores, electronics and Appliance Stores as well. Even though october is Breast Cancer awareness month, there is a lot of activity thats about to kick off in the coming days. We here at ktv are so proud to continue our partnership with making strides against Breast Cancer in the bay area and Silicon Valley. The fundraising season begins in just days ahead of the big walks that happen this october. We welcome to the nine olivia cattaneo, the Development Associate director of making strides against Breast Cancer. Thank you for being with us. Thanks for having me. Excited to be here. Of course, there is a powerful thing that happens when you get women and men, but mostly women at these walks together to share their stories. That excitement really is palpable. Absolutely. And you know what . Were really trying to encourage more people in the community to get involved with our making strides against Breast Cancer walks. We have two walks coming up in october, on october 22nd and october 28th, one in San Francisco, one in Silicon Valley. You gave me the fundraising goals for each and theyre pretty big. Yes, absolutely. So in San Francisco, were hoping to raise 250,000. In Silicon Valley, were hoping to raise 400,000. And this will go to fund critical Breast Cancer research, as well as patient programs for people who are any aware along their cancer journey. So people can mark their calendar. Now saying this is what im doing that day. Im going to put on my tennis shoes, put on my pink, and im going to walk. What can we do starting now . Absolutely. Well, were kicking off our fundraising season right now, but you dont want to miss our walks in october, well be at crissy field on october 22nd. And california is great america. And october 28th, people could go to making strides, walk dot org slash bay area ca or slash Silicon Valley to sign up volunteer and fundraise. I have been a part of these walks over the years as a participant, as an emcee and there is a powerful something that happens. You arrive essentially a stranger as you might have a Little Friends group, but then once you start walking and talking, you leave with this empowerment of so many people who are working for the same mission. Absolutely theres nothing like gathering with your friends, your family caregivers and loved ones to support you along your cancer journey. And thats what we do with making strides against Breast Cancer. I know during the pandemic we talked a lot about women were putting off necessary screenings and many doctors said they are now seeing women for the first time in 2 or 3 years and theyre finding cancer later. If you can say a word to women in particular who need to focus on their own health, amid Everything Else we do every day. Absolutely i mean, screening and Early Detection is so critical to moving the needle when it comes to diagnosis. And, you know, in california, its estimated that this year, 30,000 new cases of Breast Cancer will be diagnosed in women. The numbers are unacceptably high, and we have to do what we can to keep moving that needle and doing what we can to prevent and detect cancer, Breast Cancer used to be something that people were shocked that a loved one had. Now, i hear from people who say, oh, my aunt is going through it. My sister just went through it. How does that change the way we see Breast Cancer . Yeah its like i said, its just increasing prevalent. And i think that due to the pandemic, many people miss their appointments and their treatment. And thats why we have making strides against Breast Cancer. Its about getting connected to the community, raising awareness and of course, raising critical funds for the mission. So yeah, im assuming that working for an organization like making strides, perhaps you and i have something in similar in that we have good jobs, we have health insurance, we have sick days. Even with all that dealing with the Breast Cancer diagnosis can be burdensome. And then i think about what about the women who dont have all these benefits . Absolutely see, the Health Disparities still exist. And Breast Cancer is one of the most common diagnosed cancer in women. Second only to skin cancer. So our ability through these making strides walks to raise awareness and provide funding for critical programs as well, like free rides to treatment or a Supportive Community of Breast Cancer survivors and People Living with metastatic Breast Cancer. The funds raised through making strides will go to support those communities and help to minimize the Health Disparities making a difference and possibly saving lives. Absolutely. All right. I hope to talk with you before the big walks in october. Yes join us on october 22nd at crissy field in october 28th in californias great america, go to making strides, walk. Org to learn more. Okay, perfect. Olivia, thank you for joining us. Thank you, sal. All right. Thank you both. So this is how many years, ashley, has this been happening . Its been going on for quite a few years. I can speak a little bit more to that history. Quite a few years. I mean, my first time was last year. I went out there for fun, ended up working the event when. Yes she did. It was fun. But go ahead. Tell us a little bit about the background of the event. So the event started back in the 90s actually as a completely different event, just blues. And then its morphed into the jazz, blues and funk really to pay homage to our community and everything that it is, which is music. So this is the second year that will be at this location, which is at the civic center at 65 civic avenue, which is our grass area behind city hall. So it was a lot of fun. So ashley, tell us a little bit about the event and why you want more people to show up. I mean, you had good turnout last year, but youd love more to this year. Yeah, i mean, its a great event. Its Fun Community event. You get to come out, bring your kids, experience different music, different genres, have a little fun, hang out in the sun, meet some friends. We have a ton of great merchandise lined up for people to purchase, vendors. Theres a ton of food vendors that are out there. Weve got everything from gourmet burgers to filipino food, soul food. So, i mean, its just a great time to come out and kind of enjoy your city. Yeah, i mean, the food there was fantastic last year. You know, there was some lies, but you can order your food and go back and get it a little bit later. Talk to us a little bit about the vendors that are going to be out there as well. Some of our food vendors include soul food. Weve got filipino food, oysters on the grill. Thats the one i had last. Oysters yes, those were huge and loaded up. So theyll be there again this year. Saturday we have chris kane, who is a legendary guitarist. He also does blues as well and kind of takes his inspiration from like b. B. King and people of those natures and hes just a great performer and really enjoyable to hear and see. Last year he did. Yes, he did as well. You know, in terms of the ambiance thats going to be there called describe to the viewers there who have not been there, kind of the ambiance there. I remember toward the end of the evening, everyone just kind of gathered on the grass, hung around and started to dance. And that was a lot of fun. Talk a little bit about that. The best way to picture it is imagine this whole lawn space is your backyard for the whole day. And so you family, friends, kids, people of all ages just coming out, hanging out, listening to music, drinking beer and wine. We do have beer and wine booth eating some great food and just being surrounded by the wonderful sounds of jazz, blues and funk and ticket prices. But most people, you know, great to start out there and then toward the end of the evening, i think a lot of people end up last year my great great outside dancing out there so thats a lot of fun. And again, talk a little bit about the times that the events, the events are going to happen this weekend, saturday and sunday again. So saturday and sunday both start at noon. Saturday goes until 8 p. M. And sunday until 730. And so, yeah, bring your lawn chairs, bring your blankets, bring your family, bring your friends, and come out for a great time.
