San Francisco International happening almost immediately after takeoff. It was an unsettling incident, to say the least. Welcome, everyone aftern. Im Heather Holmes and hi everyone, im frank mallicoat. United flight 35 bound for osaka, japan this morning. Forced to make an Emergency Landing in l. A. Our tom vacar joins us live now fromusfo with more on uwell, in a phrase, this should never, ever, ever, ever happen got, uh, uh, more than 249 passengers and crew on board n this is just something that really shouldnt happen. It does happen from time to time. And heres what we know so far departure weight, usually around 150 tons, the boeing 777 jumbo jet, depending on runway length, wind and weather conditions, took off around 200 miles an hour when the 265 pound wheel and Tire Assembly fell off and hit the car in the employee parking lot before coming to rest on the osaka. The plane was likely carrying a full load of fuel around 48,000 gallons, enough to fill five semi tanker fuel trucks. It has been cleared for a visual approach. Another problem on landing after the short flight to l. A, there was still more than 40,000 gallons oft the plane very heavy for landing at somewhere between 160 and 185 miles an hour. Looks to be pretty uneventful. Thank god. The greatest danger landing that heavyuis risking, however unlikely that more wheels will come off or collapse. Wow. There it is. But this plane, like all airliners, is so overbuilt, built to handle even further loss or collapse was a very low risk missing. And one of the reasons that risk was so low is whats called redundancyf on either side of the wing you have six wheels, so 1r wheels iy landing. And it was certainly able to handle a very smooth, controlled landing in a very nice weather situation down in los angeles on an extremely long runway. Now coming up at five, i have an exclusive interview gref aviation, coming up at 5 00. Back to you and tom. Back to the tires. You mentioned two in theufront. And then i guess 12 on either side. So thats 14. Was that one wheel vital for that airliner to land at lax . Were they ever at, uh, at risk. And 240 plus passengers on board . Well, uh, you want to land an airplane . Thats perfect. Any time you haveusomething that is missing, theres a little bit of risk there. Because the real question was, was that wheel leaving that truck of wheels the only thing that went wrong . Or was there something wrong with the other wheels . The dangeruis when you set down hard, uh, theres a slight possibility that you couldc pop some of thoe the ground. But realistically, theres redundancy in there and enough strength built intoc the system that itushould be able to handle this. A lot of people dont know that an certified, has to be able to take off fully loaded with its tailudragging on the ground so s was well within the safety book. But again, it never, ever should have happened. n yeah. And tom, im just those passengers on board that they, they could feel that that they, did they have anyng or did knowledge thatuyou know, falline plane would they have felt that on board . Probably would not have felt the wheel bearings, the things little ball bearings that helpe the wheels spin around. Now, if that is out and was ready to break, that would make a very you probably could hear within. Well hear from knn generally speaking, however, the spweight of the aircraft placent it popped off, they probably didnt hear a thing. All right, our tom vacar with much moreucoverage coming up tonight at five. Thank you. Tom president joe biden, just hours away from addressing the nation of what could be the most important speech of his presidency, the address coming on the heels of super tuesday, could affect the course of the 2024 president ial election. The tonight expected to address a variety of sptopics that americans are concerned about, including ongoing calls for a cease fire there in gaza, as well as border security. And, of course, the economy. We are joined live this afternoon by political analyst david mcewen, professor of Political Science there at sonoma really nice to see you. This is a high stakes moment for President Biden. How crucial is this sp this is the whole thing rit here. If delivery is one component. Theres another test. And the test is it forward looking . Is it Forward Focused . Is he talking about reproductive rights . How has he handled the gaza situation . What does he do about donald trump . How much does he mention him or not . And what does he do about decorum in the chamber . Who int, how so those are the is the political f joe bidens political careern President Bidens the freedo, insinuating that his opponent dt mentioned donald trump, do you think, or anyuof his legal woes during the speech way back inuthe 80s, Ronald Reagan talked about not holding the age of his opponent against him in a very famous president ial debate moment. Absolutely. What joe biden does tonight is talk about his opponent, whos his same age and notuholding thec be the delicat. Hell let democrats spin this afterwards. But youc talk about donald trump and the elephant in the room without mentioning donald trump, the elephant in the roomn n okay,c so how much of this david has to do with what President Biden says as opposed to how he . Yeah. I mean, look, the delivery test is part of the component because joe biden is famous for his gaffes. So how energetic he is, what that looks like is an important component. He has to lay out in an unfettered way, not just their distinction. So its more thant just a litany of, we did this, we did this, we did this. Hell start byc telling a story and that story is the into office ac where we are now. He has to not tell that story. As your great grandfather. Thats the inflation is still high. Groceries areupretty biden go ot and convince the american, American People that the economy is not all that bad . So we look at all thec look at 18 thats, right . Andc we are emerging in the electorate. They didnt primary. Theyreuabsolutely critical for the general election, and theyre terribly concerned about many issues. But all of that does come back to talking about health care, when youre talking about the environment, when youre talking about the cost of groceries or takingc one all about the pocketbook. So jo biden and democrats have to lay that case out. Thats the second test, the Forward Focus test, not just the delivery test. Okay, a lot of people, though, david, also expecting to his administrations stance when it comes to the support forua cease fire. And what happens next more humao gaza. Whatudo you expect to hear from the president on that front . n so if you think about timing and you think about politics, and most of politics is about timing, they were hoping was a ceasefire, right . That hasnt happened. They do have this. Theyre going to offloadugoods. Theyre going to set up a quasi port offshore to deliver goods to gaza. Thats the Big Development that theyll announce. But Foreign Policy is a hugely important because that also involves russia, that involves china. The degree to korea or other events in the world. I think thats part of the death of Alexander Navalny as an example, with his widow, there at the state of the union tonight. And politics, immigration isn ukraine. Republicans want reform on the border, but theyre not going to do it unless it gets does he does he talk about that . He does. Hes going to make an explicit call for 60 billion to really push that while theyre runningc out of ammunition. Anduwhat that looks like in ukraine. And kind of contrasting that hes going johy has not been there. We know now Mitch Mcconnell is out or is leaving. So theres a shuffle thats going on on the on the republican side in the senate thatuactually magnifies and makes it harder to get a deal done as well. Okay. So you talked about ths going to be discussing tonight, president isuhe hoping to get . Nikki haleys okay. Sp so hes got to get hes got to energize the has to give there for red tofu, red meat to democrats. And at the same energize those disaffected voters, those over 200,000 voters that voted in minnesota and michigan for uncommitted. He has to get them involved in the game. Democrats need a higher turnout. They dont have a litte bit of a cheerleader for spdemocrats the union has been kind he actually has to a Campaign Speech tonight in the midst of the state of the union. Thats divisive country. ulets get backuto age,ct because that seems to be a big hurdle for him. You know, fathe time is what it is. Trumps in his late 70s as outside of justt trumps close to me. Right. They talk about ageucomes wisdom, with experience. And that theupicture theyre going to lay out tonight requires experience in office that isnt divisive. Thats the about a moment ago. Not just ree rights, also the chaos of trump and laying that out that theyre capable of doing this. Thats seriousness test. That wasupartlyuwhat they ran on in 2020. Democrats big time. Cc3 f1 all right, david, i know youre going to with us. We have some more questions for you, including a look at the invited guest at the state of the union tonight. Werec going to talk about other issues that biden expected to touch on tonight includes the environment and climate change. And id like for you to stay with us, because coming up, im going the compana green truck revolution and tell you about the new fleet just delivered to a napa business. So bay area. Now, coming up at five, well have address, including a timeline on when the chief of police will begin putting license plate readers around the city, as well as how business 30 by 30 initiative that theatt mayor talked about today in her the state of the city address rather, for sure. Year, how are mayor breeds opponents of the city address t . Yeah, well, of course, being the state of the city and being this being an election year, her opponents did have a lot to say about her. Asha safai was actually on he is a supervisor here in San Francisco. He said it but shortn how theucity would get to where it needs to go. Daniel lurie released a statement saying that the mayor never to transform the city the way it needs to beutransformed and mark farrell said that the progress that the mayor talked about today was, in his words, too little, too late. If you like sunshine, so wegll take it as we head into your friday forecast. But then some more cls and maybe some more showers approaching the bay area, but well continue to talk about the rain. Why not . Well show you the seasonal rainfall totals. And as you would expect, these are someupretty healthy numbers for the season going back toosa july 1st. Over 32in over 21in. N jose over 13in. So most areas are up above the average. We definitely need some breaks and we get the break right now. No major storms showing up in our forecast for the weekend. Just some clouds and some scattered the radar this afternoon. Weatt still have some lingering activity, some lingering thunderstorms closer to the central coast, closer to Southern California. But as we back out the maps right now, we have lots of clear bay area. Youucan see this system out here in the pacific. Well be watching some of this energy as we move into the weekend. This will and maybe a shower chance as well. Heres that live camera once again. Well take it to lots of blue sky to enjoy this afternoon fore the distance. And theres calm y this afternoon. Current number is santa rosa 65, concord, 62 degrees, oakland 60 and san degrees. Overnight temperatures will be in the 30s and the 40s. We had some cloud cover this morning. We could have some patchy fog tomorrow morning and 30s and 40s to start out. So a bit of a chill in the air first thing tomorrow morning. What about the sunshine . Well, here it is tomorrow afternoon, 1 p. M. We are in the clear. uheres som. Well be watching out that out for that asc we move into the weekend. This is saturday moving in. And look at this as this band moves into the north some shower chances into the weekend. Wellc have more on tht coming up with your full update in a little bit okay. Thank you mark. Well, anothe big topic to watch for int tonights state of the union address. The climate crisis. And coming up, a Company Pioneering the future of Hydrogen Fuel cell trucks. Talks with me live about the and the napa board mr. Box . I had this idea. Is it giving people lots of great food for 6 dollars, and letting them choose between two delicious sandwiches . Great idea, devon. Run with it that went well. And you run and get my 6 jack pack. Welcome to jack in the box you made a cow actually its a piggy bank. My inspiration to start saving. How about a more solid way to save . Im listening. Well, bmo helps get your savings habit into shape with a cash reward, every month you save. Both cash reward . And theres a cash bonus when you open a new Checking Account to get you started. Wow. Anything you cant do . mugs. Bmo oh hey, jack. Going up . Actually, no, justine. My famous 2 tacos are still just 99ยข when you order on the jack app or online. Could you press 6, please . Im going up. Get my famous 2 tacos for just 99ยข. Only on the jack app or online. Biden might address them tonight. Well, another key topic isc the administrations climate and energy efforts. Its pushing to cut Carbon Dioxide emissions from gasoline powered vehicles as well. ubiagi brothers, a Logistic Company based in napa, is part of the solutionuit recently posteduon social media its excitement about the purchase of this brand new fleet of ten hydrogenufuel cell electric trucks, saying its dedicated to Sustainable Transportation and reducing the companys carbon footprint. Those trucks, by the way, werec produced by nikola, based in arizona. And joining me live this afternoonuis christian apel, global head of product and programs for nikola. Thank you so much for being here. I want you to first explain how these trucks work. Yeah. Good afternoon, heather, and thanks for having me. Um, were very proud that we launched last year our tree fuel electric truck. Um, this truck works with a fuel cell system. So it stores hydrogen on board in gaseous form and uses that hydrogen together with oxygen out of the air then power the electric powertrain. That powertrain is similar to thec one that you wil truck. The truck has a 500 mile range and a lot of the. Okay, so what are the main advantages of these trucks . Lets say compared to diesel powered . Well, with these trucks, we can reach auvery, uh, superior performance level. Um the customers really appreciate how quiet the trucks are. And obviously those trucks have no local emissions. So theyre a bigc part in the decarbonization efforts okay. What about the fire risk . I do need to ask about that. There have been issues ind those concerns and that risk . Well, with new technology theres always risks that comes along and were looking forward. And we have defined a path forward foruboth our Battery Development testing that these trucks that were sending to the market now are safe for our customers. Okay, so how much interest are you seeing in these big rigs . Well, customers are very, very interested. The fleetsuare very interested. Um, we always try to get the customers into the trucks, get trucks, and thee very excited. Uml the truck is very spacious. The cabin less noise pollutionualso inside the cabin, you dont have the fumes and you dont have the vibration from the engine as well. And sor the driver. We were tryinguto make a better Work Environment for the driver. Okay. As we mentioned, biagi brothers there in napa ordered ten of these vehicles. How big of a market . How big of a focus is the state of california for your company its absolutely our top priority. California is a great market seeing great interest from a lot of fleets. Biagi has been one of our longest standing partners. In fact, they were ones to alsor alpha trucks, our first fleet of trucks we ever built. C in earlys in the real world. Okay and how much of that interest here in california do you believe is driven by these fuel, these vouchers for fuel cell trucks . n i think the incentives, the Vouchers Program plays a big of the vouchers for fuelucelltt electric trucks, over 350 are filed for our trucks. And it provides the fleets an ability to really become early adopters. Decarbonization efforts. Thet everyone has their esg goals and the vouchers are really a way to drive and push early adoption when the Technology Still has to mature. In terms of also the cost down. uokay, well, heres what biagi brothers says about this investment in a world that is quickly changing, innovation is the foundation for progress, growth and sustainability. It doesnt get more innovative than many trucks are you expecting to deliver to deliver, lets say, for the remainder of the year . Yeah, weve given some guidance already that well deliver 350uto 450 trucks before. Thats between the fuel cell electric truck and the. Umo as we go forward, we obviously start scaling production up. And spi q4, and we obviously all right. Appreciate you tae time to talk with us. Again, a topic that will be discussed state of the union address,st which, of coursec is the again. K you. All right. We are whos ine various themes that they represent. Also ahead, were live with twouvery women to talk about their journey as they step into the spotlight as visual artists and sisters who met later in life to their story coming up did my legs shrink . I can move them. I mean, i knew Alaska Airlines premium class had extra legroom but this. This feels different. Okay. Crazy idea. On the count of 3. Im going to try and cross my. Ohhhhhhhhhhh boyy thats nice. Woooooo yeah. Were back now with of sonoma state. Thank you so ag us once again, david, theset folks who are invited to attend this is not by accident. I mean, this is intentional. Theyre really designed to spotlight the issues that these lawmakers want spotlighted. Right . I mean, what you see here, this is all the state of the union has kind of outlived its usefulness in terms of political rhetoric, where it is useful in terms of appearances, those guests, the themes you want put forwardc because its not even o much about the delivery, although maybe thats important with this about the coverage afterwards and about the themes that move forward. So you select these guests very strategically is what you do. And some can be very moving. Yeah. Thats right. Some can be very moving. They stand up. I mean obviously with talk about n violence, shooting, tragedy, component. Its going to be a touching moment of what will happen, and together. And what has couple os kind of arrangement. And lets talk about that on decorum. Last year, President Biden, well, he got heckled by some of the republicans in the chamberc. Do you expect more of that . And if so, if youre coaching President Biden, how does he handle that with humor . You have thandle it with humor if you can. If you can do them. And the example ill give you is, look, the other night when hecklers schiff, if that wy pelosi, she would have said, i heard you, i get you now its my turn, right . And you have to elevate that. Andc if you can ds class. And thats political first class. Can he do that . That will be part of the challenge. And as we remember last year, those moments in which there was that sort of sparring is what everyone was talking about the next day and how President Biden reacted, how bit of and they want thatd. T combativeness as well, because they want toushow that hes full of energy. Right. And youumight remember your viewers will remember a few a representativee he was from north carolina, preu lie. And there was this stunning silence there. And obama just like looked at him and just had that cold stare that a parent gives to a child. Its that kind of moment where you can illustrate strength, and sometimes even by saying less. A lot of people, though, point to that and say, okay, that crossed the line. Thats right, thats right. And thats the worry is, you know, what is a marjorie taylors there someone who steps out of line . Because weve kind pushing the envelope here a little bit, and thats spilled over from the house, even into the senate. And what happens there . How about the republican freshman senator out of alabama, katie boyd. Britt only 42. Tell us there is. She worked for richard shelby, the longtime senator, ubut like an establishment republican, very similar to kind of the trent school or like we see with john thune or cornyn now, not necessarily a maga as someone whos on the short list spfor donald trump. Shes also someone whos going to talk about ivf toc rights and whats been happening and spinning out there. We should expect to see a lot about roe from President Biden and a response by her theucontext of ivfuand what in families can do and what would be parents would like to see. Okay. And how significant is that republican rebuttal . And d people really tune in for that . Well, this is where the state of the union has somewhat there. Youre there. Older people. Were there. Uh, but in terms of, you know, unless i assign it to my students, theyre not going toube listening or watching, but they will be paying to the coverage afterwards, and theyll want to see someone a those human faces from uvalde, someone these types of things, to see those elements ofuhumanity o combatants going toe to toe at this point, right early. Were eight months from the election. So will america tune in and watchuthis . Uh, america will tune in and watch the coverage afterwards and the spin afterwards. However, this is the one moment where joe getsuan hour, hour and a half an hour, 20 of uninterrupted time. C he doesnt get this at any other moment. The only other time he could have gotten it super bowl, super bowl. And they passed no, passed passed 100 and they missed it. Sp million could have him. Heumight have helped. Het might have helped thec one set of thingsuthat could cua curryl you had lebron. You up tg young people out relative to the that would be a knockout and that would be the coverage. Butuit doesnt seem like david, when you look at thee. T invited guest list, ubecause it is really much more heavily themed, if you will. Um, you mentioned the uvalde shooting family there, are still being held hostage in israel. So i get what youre saying in terms of maybe bringing in someone that is a little bit more pop culture,c spright, that the Younger Generation canuassociate with. But it seems like mostuof the, the, the invited guests really kind of the topics important policy. I think you nailed it there. Traditional. Yeah and that approach and this is a nontraditional election year. Its not 1968. Its 1860. And so they need to push those things together and be 1860 biggest speech of his presidency. Is this his biggest political speech ever . I think it is his biggest political speech ever. You know, you asked about what hes doing right, uhes testing, ubut hes warming up and hes also got toukind of stand back and say, of the united sta. Lets bring this forward. I got this. I think about stamina, 81 years old. Youre up there for an hour, hour and a half under the spotlight in front politicse people. Thats pretty heady stuff. Is how many times he says, man,r you know, he does that during debates. Is there going to be any over under in of the state of the union . One of theuthings series. Rch madness, like worldt okay, are right . Right. How many times you see republicans stand up and clap and or democrats stand up and clap . As many moments for republicans, but do disagree, they tenduto go ahead and make that voice. When the speakers not of the same radical party because its right behind the Vice President and the speakers right behind him. Its going to be awkward for the members of are there. Oh, g. That thats its going to be awkward. Thats going to be whats goinguto happen. All right. Way to wrap it up. Thank you so much david. Thank you state. We appreciate it. Thank you. Well exploring themes of sisterhood as we switch gears. A new article exhibition details a unique journey next year on the for live with two bay area sisters. Talk about their artistic journey and where you can see their workua bay area weather look at all that blue skya the storm clouds are out of e forecast for tomorrow, but then byc the weekend we could be talking about some shower chances. Look at all of that blue sky mark and withuall of this rain weve had of late . n yeah, i think were really appreciating todays all the ran cloudsuand just so much happening over the past week, well take these sunny days and thats what we have once again for tomorrow. Now were always talking about some rain that seems like this time of year. And as we take a look here, long range here, thankfully were not talking about any major storms, but the rainfall could be making a comeback into the weekend, spespecially into next week. But as least for us here in the bay area, uwere not expecting any major totals. At least thats the initial thinking. uof course, the sierra that has been the pastuweek or e a look at the snowpack readings for the kind of the profile here for the northern, central and february, these were some of the numbers. Not too exciting, 66 te that to today. And these numbers going up quite a bit, especially up in the northern sierra, was e today from sierra tahoe. Visually it just looks great as well with all that extra snow in weather forecast. This weekend is looking great as well. Sunny for your friday. We will thicken up the clouds all weekend long and there is a slight chance of some snow for both saturday and into sunday, but overall were not expecting any major accumulations for this weekend. Right now, heres a look at the radar we some lingering rain showers and portions of Southern California for us here in the bay area. We are enjoying the sunshine. You can see lots of clear skies up and down the state. We aret watching some Energy Pacific thy spill into northern california. Heres a live camera once again, another vantageupoint of all the sunshine looking out toward San Francisco bay and alcatraz. Well check out someuof the current numbers. Santa rosa, mid 60s, San Francisco, upper 50s and some lower 60s for concord, oakland, and in san jose for your thursday afternoon. Overnight temperatures starting out the day in the 30s anduthe 40s, a partly cloudy skies. We will have maybe some patchy fog out there to start things off tomorrow morning, but heres your headline for tomorrow. It is a wants to stick around for one more day. So with that, lots of sunshine. We are g into theuweekend forecast saturday. There is a chance of a sprinkle or a light shower that spbegin to bump uputhose chances for the second half of the weekend. Once again, not a major deal, but we could be tracking spsome raindrops even the plan. Tomorrow were going to watch the clouds roll in. By friday night and then into saturday well see those be fav. And then this looks like it wily and then on sunday well be watching out for the approach of this system and shower chances could be goinguup by sunday afternoon. So the weekend more clouds tomorrow, more sunshine. Highs will be in the low to mid 60s. San francisco 62, concord mid 60, san jose 68 degrees. So make the most of your friday if youre if youre liking all these blue skies out there into the weekend, there is a chance n it looks like showers could be developing into sunday, and then another system wants to move in by monday afternoon. Monday night, maybe some moreushowers into tuesday. This could allt change around a bitl but you get the idea. Were not talking about Crystal Clear blue blue sky days ahead, but more clouds and maybe some shower chances. But tomorrow will be another nice day in the bay area. Forecast all looks good.
