The reason one of its middle schools is on the chopping block and how the district is responding. Liveufrom jack london square. This is morning time two. The night. Is friday, march 15th, and youre looking live across the oakland estuary right now. Beautiful morning right now. But we are still dealing with wind. Were going to check in with Steve Paulson here in just a few minutes for an update on how thats looking for all of us state lawmakers are frustrated over the university of californias lack of instate student enrollment. A report earlier this year found that while more instate grads are being accepted to uc schools, the number is still below the states targeted goal. Lawmakers say they want the uc system to make more space for california residents, even if it means charging higher tuition or making admission requirements more difficult for out of state applicants. Welcome to the ninth. Thank you so much for joining us. Man out of state remember that. Hey, thats why i went to school in florida. So you stayed in state . Sp yeah, i stayed in state. So it was much cheaper for me. But i looked at that number from out of state. Im like, theres no way because i had to pay for it myself, right . So there was no way i was going to be able to do it myself. You know, go to state like some other kids. I think i agree with the, the with the regents trying to reserve more spots for childrene system in my opinion is a great system. And hopefully more people from who live here can, you know, utilize it. Sure. Since it is a public school. T right. And you think about all your life have been you, i know a lot of parents say you go wherever, well make it happen. Other parents say, look, this is how much we have right . We got to make it work. Yeah, thats exactly what and i think you know, for a california studentuto have to go to another school because they cant get into one of what breaks my heart. I hear from parents who have children older he really wanted to get intonow ucla or uc san diego. He didnt makeuit. So now hes in colorado, which is great. I love colorado, but thats a wow, butu grew up here. You your folksc ae here. And getting on auplane to see your parents is a hard thing. So its an encouraging trend for those of us with younger children, for sure. T lets put it that way. All right. Lets focus on whats happening in fremont. Here is police there have arrested a man for a shootout between two cars in which one person was killed and another was hurt. 25 year old sylvester carver, facing charges of murder anduattempted murder. Shooting happened back on march 5th around stephenson boulevard and albright street. Police say people in two cars were shooting at each other, and when officers arrived one of the shooting victims inside a spcrashed car. He died four days later. Carver was eventually arrested wednesday night at a home in richmond. This is video fromc citizen app showing authorities surrounding a home on hartnett avenue. A second suspect, identified as keon bolts, has also been charged with gun crimes. Investigators say he helped carver get away and hamas. War between israel hamas has released details of a new cease fire proposal that includes the release of hostages being held in gaza for palestinian prisoners held in israel. But on the diplomatic hw elections. Madeline rivera has more from capitolc hill. As the fighting grinds on in the gaza strip, israels war cabinet is meeting to consider a new ceasefire proposal from hamas. Its a two step plan. In the first phase, hamas would release israeli women, children, the elderly and those Health Issues in exchange for up to 1000 palestinian prisoners. After that, both sides would spagree on a date for israels withdrawal from gaza, followed by the release of the remaining hostages. Its not yet clear how israelc would respond, but its unlikely theyd order a full stop to their offensive. We are willing to pay a heavy price to bring back the hostages, but we oneuthing we will not compromise in that our demand not to stop the war until hamas is eradicated. Reporter the new proposal was announced just one day after Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer suggested israel hold new elections, a direct shot at Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu. Those comments prompting significant criticism from israeli officials. Even benny gantz, netanyahus political rival, called incorrect and unacceptable. The Biden Administration now distancing itself from schumers remarks, saying he was speaking for himself, not the white house. Im sure that they fully understand that he speaks for himself. Hes obviously someone wegre in close contact with, but its not a statement from the executive branch. Meanwhile, the us released the final draftuof a Un Resolution aimed at stopping the fighting in gaza. But its spunclear when it fox two news s been worked out for most of the protesters who were arrested for back in november so they cant avoid a trial. 78 people accepted an offer from the court to complete five hours of Community Service. They will also pay restitution fine. However, the amount is still being determined now. Now one case wasudropped for lack of evidence. Is still going forward, he told us his case is separate from the others. Its unfortunate that an innocent person has to be dragged through this type of thing for something they hadt nothing to do with, so i guess im just im disappointed. Still, im disappointed in the district attorney. Im disappointed in the prosecutors. I really am absolutely disappointed that they would continue to push something onto somebody that, again, has nothing to do with this. Way to catch a flight when he was caught up in the gaza protest and wrongfully detained. He wants prosecutors to drop disperse a major road closure for drivers in the east bay this weekend. Starting tonight, southbound 680 between the 580 and 680 connector and koopman road will be closedc through monday morning. Its all in part the existing roadway which really needs it and has deteriorated over time. With us now is janice mara from caltrans. Good morning janice, that good morning. Yeah. That section sometimes i drive there and i know its in bad shape. I know its a construction zone. I think aulot of people that this is moving forward. Yes, exactly. And as you mentioned, the closure begins at 9 p. M. Tonight, friday, and lasts until 4 a. M. Monday. And as you said, when the roadway reopens at 4 a. M. Monday, there will be a smooth ride for deteriorated pavement withng th concrete, which lasts for a long time, so this is definitely to the benefitcuof motorists. Of some impact during the weekend. We really appreciateuthe patience of the public and by doing a weekend closure, we are able to shrink what would otherwise be three months worth of nighttime closures into one weekend. So thats also, yeah, go ahead. Yeah, thats the good part janice. Youre able to get it done. The bad part isuive driven there and you know lets say youre going out to wine country in livermore or youre otherwise trying to get through there. Having 680 shut down between 580 all the way down to 84. There are going to be people who are going to come up on the closure. Theyreunot going to know about it. Theres going to be a huge traffic jam in san ramon. What do you suggest for drivers knowing about this . What do you suggest they do to, you know, to get around . Well, its great that you im very grateful foruyou all having me today so that we can inform the public. As you sayl forewarned is forearmed, and youre doing a great job of making sure that as many people as possible do know about it. People in the bay area are flexible, responsive, and smart when they know Something Like this coming up,c they change their behavior. So yeah, if youre coming in from tracy, you can take 580 westbound, get on 84 southbound and then connect back up with southbound 680 when 84 and 8484 and 680 intersect, people coming in, for example, from four going west. Then they hook up with 80 and with i80, and then they take x0 all the spway down to 880 and then 680 south. So those are some of the detours also. And i so appreciate again thatuyoure showingufacing these detours, another way to learn about what closure is to go to our website got, a traffic advisory with the mapsc that you showcased. Also, the traffic advisory has verbal descriptions of the detours and all kinds of other details. And one thing while were talking about detours, though, is this weekend is the weekend of Saint Patricks dayuits two Day Celebration on, capped with its iconic Saint Patricks day parade on sunday. And i did want to mention that all entrances to dublin off 680 and 580 will be thec wear of the green, as they say. Nicen thank you very much, for all that information. All right. Lets turn things over to Steve Paulson. He is back now, steve, the wind is really the weather story of the morning. Now, hows hows it looking . Still one moreuwindy day, then. I think it decreases over the weekend. Here interesting note. San franciscos low did not get below 60 this morning. Whats a normal low this time of year . 49. And their normal high is 62. So its going to be a warm day on the coast. Early this morning bodega bay was 64 degrees. So the coast will be one of the warmer locations today probably into the weekend. Changes next week middle of next week. Still think some rain comes in around next thursday or friday, but everything is pointing to an offshore breeze, no doubt about it. Thats something we see in september october. Not usually in march, but it does happen near cobb mountain, 70 mile per hour gusts. Mount diablo has been between 59 and 71mph. Las trampas, east bay hills 42, Mount Tamalpais 36. And right above the claremont, 34mph. Unseasonably strong and whats that, i hear . Overachieving, low. Another one. Lots of snow. Big bear, higher elevation. Southern california near flagstaff. Interstate 40. A lot of snow being reported there might impact some of the spring training games today. Very close in between two different bands down there. And las vegas is in on the on the soup, so to speak, if you will. But for us, yes, its sunny, but its also windy. Here, take your pick. Fairfield 31 gusts. Napa 3135 nevada almost 30. Santa rosa, concord 22. And there have been gusts about 30 as well around Half Moon Bay still in there. Livermore that wind is picking up. Its all out of the north or the northeast, so thats equaling 60 already. Half moon bay 63, santa rosa 64. Would not be surprised to see some 7778 for a few. Livermore is already 60 degrees sfo 61. This will be with us today. This low will now start to march a little bit more towards arizona next 24 hours. That will allow the wind speeds to start coming down as we go into the weekend, but it will be sunny side up and nice. So your forecast 70s for temps today and probably all the way into the weekend. Dont expect much change until early next week. So today if its not for the win. Otherwise the weekend looks great for outdoor activities. You guys, thank you. Bay area county, becoming the first in the nation to declare loneliness a Public Health crisis. The app is called wiser, and its being used for adults to make friends. You may recall back in january, officials in San Mateo County reported that 45 of people who live there say they have felt isolated or lonely. But wiser hopes to fix those statistics as it launches in the bay area. So with us now is Carolyn Kelly and taylor jay, who are the cofounders of the app. Carolyn and taylor, thank you so much for joining us. Thank you for having us. Morning. So, taylor, ill start with you first. What really inspired you to start this app . You both cofounded it, but i want to know what went into this. What you saw. Yeah. One day, carolyn and i were talking about our fathers, and, you know, they really needed to make some friends. They were feeling a little bit lonely, and we thought, you know, maybe theres an app or something we could come up with to get them together. But then we thought more about it. Its not about our fathers. If youre over 40, its an issue facing you. Its facing us. And people are really feeling a little bit disconnected socially. Right. So carolyn, we made a point to say that this is for adults over 40, not necessarily just older adults. Why that 40 mark, that 40 age. And then up. There is nothing out there in the rket for older adults and there were a lot of apps out there for dating younger teens, women in particular. There was nothing out there. And for me, im an empty nester, and many people in this demographic are either empty nester, retired, theyre new to a town, so its really difficult to meet people when youre new to town. And there was nothing out there for me to meet people. I didnt want to go on a dating app. And so this is kind of the inspiration of why we created this. So, taylor, this is not a dating app. So what is it when you go on the app, what does it engage you with . Its for friendship, platonic friendship, whatever that might mean to you. So if youre feeling alone and youre looking for a bestie, you could find that. Or sometimes youre just looking for an activity partner. You have two concert tickets and none of your friends want to go. I mean, thats happened to me many times where i wanted to go, like Morgan Wallace show, and i reached out to my friend group. Nobody wanted to go, but i could go on wiser friends and i could find someone to go to the show that night. I think you have different friends for different reasons, dont you . Sometimes you want to meet someone for coffee and a chat, and other times you need an activity partner to go do something with, and thats what. And so the app breaks down these different activities. Is that how it looks on the app . Absolutely. Play pickleball. We have so many people who want to try pickleball and they have no one to play pickleball with. Oh, thats a good thought. Yeah. So youre sitting at home, youre hearing about all the news of pickleball, but you can go on the app and say, oh, is there anyone that wants to play pickleball . Or is there something going on a court nearby . And can we go play . So thats kind of the idea of this. It is. And its for individuals and couples. So if your significant other doesnt want to go play pickleball or you need a fourth for golf, you know you can go to hop on wiser and find a fourth. All right. So youre partnering, you said with the San Mateo County which declared this loneliness and issue. Taylor, tell me a little bit about that and what your partnership with the county what would that entail . Yeah, were launching today with San Mateo County supervisor canepa about the loneliness crisis, which you talked about. Its a huge issue, not just in San Mateo County, but all over california and all over the country. Its actually an issue that was raised by the world health organization. So were here to work with residents all over the bay area to get people out of their house. Thats the most important thing. Get people socially connected. Were using technology as a tool to get people to come together and get out. Activity she keeps you healthy mentally and physically, and thats what were here to do. And so, carolyn, youll be partnering as we said, youre partnering with the city. So does it mean letting more people know about about the wiser app . Absolutely. Either one of you. Yeah. Yeah. Its about local community leaders. Its about sponsors. Its about people dedicated individuals getting out in the community, spreading the word and getting involved. We want people here in the bay area to get involved. Email us, get on the website, get on the app and get involved. You know, and i wanted to ask you both, you know, what are the dangers of loneliness . What does it do to the human body being lonely . Yeah its a huge health issue. I mean, its being lonely that has been studied. Its equivalent to smoking up to 15 cigarets per day. It impacts your cardiovascular health, your mental health, your longevity. And so its very important to stay socially connected for all of those reasons. And if you think the u. S. Surgeon general has declared one out of every two people has admitted to being lonely, i mean, this is a widespread issue, and were happy to be involved trying to solve that problem. Youre not necessarily tech, you know, but youre using technology. You arent previous tech executives or working in the tech world. But you came up with this idea, knew that this could this is something that could work. You could use technology to connect people. Yeah, thats the whole idea. Were not a tech background. Were not from a tech background. But were here to stress the importance of using technology to communicate and to socially connect and you all are based here in california. We are. And so youre starting here in california and hopefully branching out to other states as well as kind of the idea. So youve youve got, you know, the app will show you activities and people here in california, but the hope is to branch out to other we have users all over the country, okay. All over the country as well. All right. So its growing its popularity already. Wow. Very quickly, very quickly. So San Mateo County, anything else that you want the viewers to know about about your partnership or the app . Yeah. People can get on the app right now. Apple or google play, download it and its free to join. Its free to join all right. Taylor j. Carolyn, thank you so much for joining us. We appreciate it and good luck with the partnership. Its a unique thing. It hasnt been done yet. So well see how it works. And hopefully well address an issue that that is becoming a problem for so many people. Thank you so much. Thank you. And its kind of early. Yeah, it is early for it. Lets get through Saint Patricks day. Skeleton now and put it somewhere like, where are you going to put it right. Do you have the room . Who knows . Yeah. All right. Maybe it is a tad early. Lets get to this story now. Part of 680 will be closed in pleasanton tonight. It will remain closed until monday morning. Ktvu is Amanda Quintana is here with more on the project. The crews will be working on this weekend. And more importantly, amanda, how can you get around it . Yeah, well, keep in mind this is just southbound that will be closed. If youre going northbound, thats still going to be open. Thats still going to be okay. Now this area in the red, this is whats going to be closed. So to get around youre going to have to go 580 to 880. Another option. You could go 84 to get around all of this city streets though probably going to be congested because there are four on ramps that are closed in that area as well. Now there are multiple signs trying to make sure that drivers are prepared for this big change. This project was supposed to happen back in january, but then rain pushed it back. The last month. Rain pushed it back again, but it looks like they will be clear to get all of that work done this weekend. The about nine mile stretch of the highway will get new pavement. Now this again southbound 680 from the i5 8680 connector to koopman road. It will be closed starting at 9 00 tonight until four in the morning on monday. Caltrans says by doing this all in one weekend, crews are saving drivers time and overall, since normally this work would require about 40 overnight closures, i will send it back to you at the desk. All right, amanda, thank you. Some uc berkeley parents have hired private security guards to patrol an area near campus in the face of what they say are inadequate efforts by the university. The parents call their group the safe bears. They raised 40,000 to pay for private security guards for three weeks. The group hopes the university will pay for the additional security. Our message to uc berkeley is right now, your students arent safe and a small, meaningful Financial Investment could turn that situation around so quickly. Now, in a statement to ktvu, the University Said it hired 32 more Community Service officers to bring the total number to 90 as of next week, adding, quote, hiring private security raises a number of concerns, including the training and experience of individuals hired by such firms. We believe that University Funds are better spent hiring more sworn or nonsworn ucpd officers. A South Bay School is safe for now from upper grade levels being closed down because of a decline in enrollment. Pushback from parents, students and staff of aptitude academy in san jose prompted the School District to reconsider its plans to close six seventh and eighth grades at the k through eight school. Aptitude academy currently has about 410 students involved or enrolled during this womens History Month. The first and only female scout in the nba is shining a light on other women whove broken barriers in the world of sports, bonniejill laflin is a sports broadcaster, tv personality, so many other things, including now an author. Shes live now to talk about her new book in a league of her own celebrating female firsts in sports. Thanks for being with us. Thank you so much for having me. Of course, the book is inspiring. You tell the stories of more than a dozen exceptional women. Why yes, i wanted there wasnt a book that encompassed all the females that had paved the way that have broken barriers, that have been the trailblazers, and i thought it was really important that women, the Younger Generation females, were able to see that they are can be in sports and that there is a space for them. I thought that was really important and very timely. Yeah. You know, you were the first woman to dance at a professional level for three teams in two sports. How do you think people view women in that role . I mean, im old enough to remember when cheerleaders were just kind of thought of as eye candy, not the athletes that they are. Absolutely. Yes. You know, being a Golden State Warriors cheerleader and a 40 niner cheerleader, there is a stereotype, a stigma that if youre an attractive female or you were a cheerleader, you dont have brains, youre not knowledgeable, youre not credible. And so theres so many women that i cheer with that went on to be doctors, lawyers and so forth. So there is a stigma, but i think people are starting to realize that it may be a way that women like to be involved in sports or stepping stone like i used. So there is that component of it. But i think im here to show that, that it is just a stereotype of all the women you you, you portray in the book. Some of them i knew. Right . Danica patrick, you know, you know, billie jean king, there are some hidden gems. Why did you kind of, you know, reach deep and elevate these these women in this way . Exactly. I call them my hidden gems because there were so many ladies that maybe they didnt have the social media platform or, you know, there just wasnt the magnitude of a celebrating females at that time. So i wanted the julie krone, who was the first female jockey. Jane kennedy, who was one of the first female African American women to be on a sports show, men on rhino, who was the first female to be in an nhl hockey game with the tampa bay lightning. So there are so many women that i felt need to be highlighted, and i wanted this to resonate with all different people. So i thought that, you know, getting all different walks of life, different demographics was very important. And to show not just the athletes, but also the women are in the Front Office Like the owner of the lakers, doctor jerry buss, son, jeanie buss. So there were so many women that needed to be highlighted and it just wasnt going to be athletes. I wanted younger females to see that theres so many different areas of sports and facets that they can be. Yeah, im so lucky. I have, you know, in my life i have a middle school son, a high school aged son. Theyre both, you know, young, young teenagers. I also have nieces. One of them is on her schools, her middle schools Mountain Biking team, and she is one of just a handful of girls. And then the rest of the team is boys. And it was very hard for her to get the confidence that a lot of these boys just kind of walked in the front door with on the first day. Can you talk about that extremely tender time of middle School Sports and how we see way more girls dropping out than boys . Yes, definitely. And i think its more just getting that confidence. So its, you know, having hopefully a great Family Support and also teachers, you know, being able to instill in these young women that they are able to do whatever they put their mind to. And there is going to be the toughest time and the hurdles and a lot of tenacity and that theyll have to go through an adversity. But at the same time, its well worth it and it kind of prepares you and builds you character. Throughout those young years to become a, you know, an adult, to understand the ups and downs. But with hard work, you can get to what you want to be absolutely. I mean, she took a spill and she was like banged up and bruised up. And i thought, oh god, of all the grandkids, it has to have a fall on a mountain bike. But she got back up and she just raced in her first race the other weekend. So. All right, bonnie jo laflin, we could talk for a minute here. Ill make sure she gets your book. Its so nice to be able to connect with you. Thank you so much. Being a bay area girl, i love being on. Thank you so much. We appreciate it. The book is in a league of her own, celebrating female firsts in sports, speaking of women doing incredible things, some car clubs are celebrating this womens History Month in southern california. The worlds luckiest holiday is just around the corner. Saint patricks day is this sunday, and the irish are already celebrating. Earth cam has a live look here. You can see it right behind me from dublin and people are going in and out of pubs. Its 445 there in the afternoon, so just getting ramped up now. Travelzoos Senior Editor gabe sadlier has been traveling through ireland this week and i caught up with him earlier this morning from Malahide Castle with a peek at how ireland is gearing up for the big holiday. Gabe, i cant help but notice that youre at one of these castles that ive always wanted to visit. It looks so cool. Its a famous castle, tell us about it. Well, sell. You know, you come out to ireland, youve got to do a castle. And i suggest this one. This is beautiful. Malahide castle and gardens. I am just about ten minutes outside of dublin airport. You know, a lot of the flights that will come into dublin are those overnight flights that get in at seven, eight, 9 00 in the morning. You want a couple of hours to kill before you check into your hotel, make your way over to malahide and check out this gorgeous 12th century castle. Think about that 800 years of history and it is set on 250 acres of parkland, a right up against the irish sea. So just a beautiful setting. The locals come out here all the time to walk their dogs, do a little bit of picnicking. Concerts are held here all the time, you know, staying shania twain, nicki minaj, blondie have all performed here. So its a just a hotspot of activity. Now lets get to Saint Patricks day because the irish take Saint Patricks day very seriously. Its a five day festival which is already underway. There it is underway, of course. Itll climax on sunday the 17th with what is the worlds second largest saint pattys day parade in the world. Its only smaller than the one they throw out there in new york city, this is video from last year. I got to cover it. It was just another example of just some of that, that that energy and that thrill that comes with that pervasive irish hospitality. And what i love is that very palpable american presence, because youve got at least a dozen marching bands from different us high schools and universities and colleges that are part of the parade. This year, the theme is spark, which sort of taps that essence of ireland and the irish people, some of that pervasive hospitality. These are some of the performers out here. They become my friends this morning. Theyre going to be part of the parade route. Youve got these magnificent mardi gras style pageants and floats, and again, more than 4000 performers on the parade route. And i think theyre talking about setting a record this year as far as as, as spectators, about 650,000 people expected to line the streets of downtown dublin. Were going to be broadcasting, streaming that live on tourism Irelands Facebook page, so if you are up at 8 30 a. M. Pacific, make that eastern. So its 530 our time. Theyre sailing in the bay area, join us for whats going to be a fantastic experience. And if you cant make it out here this year, sal, next year, come on out. You know, air lingus has those nonstop flights from sfo over to dublin, you fall asleep, you wake up in dublin, its. Sounds like a plan to me. All right. So real quick before we go. And i love the dancers, by the way, give us a tip for americans who are trying to travel over there. Any tips . Yeah. So id say look at the spring and the fall season. The sort of what we call these shoulder season, the crowds have thinned, prices drop, the weather still actually quite nice, and its just that much easier to get into some of your favorite attractions if youre doing the road tripping. The west coast is going to be the place to be this year. It is the 10th anniversary of that west coast, the wild atlantic way being designated as the longest driving route in the world at 1600 miles, ive been doing it in chunks over the years, but if youre a road tripper and you love those sweeping landscapes, thats going to be the place to be this year for sure. Good stuff. Gabe, looks like youre having fun, thank you for giving us a lay of the land there, and well see you next time. Yeah, ive been thinking about it. I got to tell you, ive never been to ireland, but its on my list. It looks like a lot of fun, doesnt it . Well, gabe sold it just now. You go to sleep on a plane, and you wake up there with a direct flight from sfo. Thats right. It does sound pretty intriguing, right . Yes yeah. Very tempting. The history and just i mean, the landscapes and then the, you know, the amazing architecture, theres a lot of even if youre like, im not big into food, youre like, thats okay. There are many other things. For example, im not big into pub culture and some people are, others arent. Theres plenty else to do so much. So much. Go see a castle. Why not . You know what are you going to see that are still to come . The. They have scales, a forked tongue, and can grow large enough to eat a pig coming up on mornings on 2 to 9. Why . Experts say sna s could be the the concern and a health hazard. Ktvu, joey hoarder talked to some of the people who call that area home. Park near the top of a hill on Bernal Heights boulevard in San Francisco for armando martinez, this vintage rv is home. I didnt plan on living here. I just, lost my job, about a year and a half ago, and i couldnt find a place that i could afford. Hes not alone. We counted six rvs parked on this street on thursday. The city wants them to leave. We are good people. You know, i work every day. The Mayors Office tells us they are giving rv owners until march 28th to remove their vehicles. San franciscos transportation code prevents any vehicle from being parked on a street for more than 72 hours. Its a great spot. I can understand why theyre here, but its limited parking. The Mayors Office says that parking these large vehicles along this windy, narrow road is dangerous and that the raw sewage being dumped here is a safety hazard. Weve all been coming out and picking up all the trash every morning. Theres drug dealing going on in the back of the one. Theres the dogs left all day long. Other neighbors dont have a problem with the rvs. Heartsick to see it happening on all the levels, the rvs, the tent cities. And theres just nowhere for people to go. The coalition on homelessness says the rvs are a low cost alternative to the rising cost of rent, and allow people to avoid living on the streets. Let us stay here for a little while longer so that we could figure out what were doing. Joey ktvu, fox two news.
