The phone with officer David Derutte with the chp officer. Thanks so much for the time. As we watch these live pictures. This is obviously a dynamic situation and has been since 330. So what is the strategy with your officers on the ground on i80 right now were utilizing fairfields bearcat and theyre trying to make an approach on the vehicle, to get the subject out, officer, obviously, we know this is an armed suspect. Can you tell us just how dangerous the situation might be for members of the public right now . Very dangerous. I mean, we believe that it. Yeah, he can be armed, this vehicle was involved in a freeway shooting this morning in santa rosa about 11 00, and a few hours later, about 2 00, we located the vehicle in rohnert park. And thats when this pursuit started , so we are at the finish point, right . What you guys are watching on on the screen from the helicopter . Yeah. Officer, obviously youre keeping folks back very far as both directions of 80 are shut down. Can you tell us about those shutdowns and what you would advise people that are sort of sitting in their cars and waiting for this to resolve itself here . Were making a plan, trying to make an approach on the vehicle. Were trying to get things cleared up as soon as we can and get traffic moving again, but for now, we understand theres not really any place for those cars to go. But please be patient, and well get things going as soon as we can. So im hearing you say this is kind of an ongoing situation here. Obviously, its a friday night. People are trying to head home. Are you expecting this to go on for several more hours . The officers are on scene or making plans so that hopefully does not happen. But right now i dont have a timetable officer duty. I want to go back to what you said about how this all began, with that car to car shooting or attempted shooting on the freeway. We understand that nobody was injured in that shooting in santa rosa. Is that correct . And can you give us any more details about how this transpired . Correct. Southbound 101, the victim vehicle was a black suv, one shot was fired through the rear of the vehicle. Nobody was injured, one occupant was the driver, the victim. And she exited the freeway, called to us, and we spoke with her. We got a description of the vehicle, it took us a little bit of time through investigation. We found, the license plate. It did return out of rohnert park, and then we located the vehicle in a Shopping Center in rohnert park. And it was occupied at the time, and when we approached on the vehicle, thats when the pursuit started. Yeah. Officer durruti, we are going back and forth between traffic maps as well as keeping an eye on this standoff. As far as the suspect goes, as we understand, there is only one man inside of that vehicle at this point. We believe so, there was some information, possibly during the pursuit, that maybe they saw more than one person. But were not. Im not sure from from where im at. Okay. Chp officer david durruti, well let you get back to work. Thanks so much for joining us again. I80 both directions near to the 680 interchange in fairfield shut down as officers are in that continued standoff with that suspect. Appreciate you joining us. And another top story tonight, san joses police chief says two officers wounded in a shootout with a suspect were protecting a mother and her children from a Domestic Violence suspect that suspect, identified as Kevin Briones, is in Critical Condition at a South Bay Hospital after shooting at officers who then shot him. They came banging on the door very shortly after, saying that he shootout unfolded at an Extended Stay Hotel in south san jose le thursday night. Investigators say a mother and her three children were hiding from briones inside a room, which is what prompted that 911 call and ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary is live at San Jose Police headquarters with the latest jesse mcchrystal, acting police chief paul joseph says, responding officers were coming to that domestic situation to help the mother and those three children. Shortly after arriving, they came face to face with an armed felon who immediately opened fire. This is the classic reason why police work is so dangerous. Its the unknown. You could go to this call a thousand times and nothing ever goes wrong. And the thousand and first time is this one. San jose acting police chief paul joseph says two patrol officers lucky to be alive after confronting armed felon Kevin Briones around 1030 thursday night. A front desk receptionist at the Extended Stay Hotel on san ignacio avenue near bernal road called 911, saying someone in a third floor room needed help. A mother and children were sheltering on the other side of a thin motel door from a known man who had recently committed violence on them. Two arriving officers confronted briones in a hallway. Investigators say the 33 year old felon, who was wanted on two warrants, reached into a duffel bag, pulled a stolen nine millimeter handgun and opened fire. The two officers returned fire, rattling hotel guests. They came banging on the door very shortly after, saying that we had to shelter in place. They let us know that there was officers down. Im shaking. Im scared. The officers on the force one year and two and a half years were both injured, with the junior officer being critically wounded. The second officer immediately pulled the more seriously injured officer to safety and immediately began assessing him for injuries. Went to apply a tourniquet before he even realized that he himself had been shot. Briones jumped through a third story plate glass window onto the ground below and tried to escape. I didnt think anything like this would happen, but you never know. You never know, you know, things are crazy now. Backup officers found him a short distance away and arrested him. Thanks to the swift and courageous action of our officers, as no one else was harmed. And theres no ongoing threat. One officer was treated for moderate injuries at a nearby hospital and released. The other remains in Critical Condition. But chief joseph says the prognosis from surgeons is promising. Are these life threatening injuries . And she said they are, but hell survive. Briones is also in Critical Condition after being hit at least once in the exchange of gunfire. Officials say this case points to a convergence of criminal justice factors that must be addressed. Illegally possessed guns continue to proliferate our streets and place our community and officers in danger. And the chief says in the past 15 months, 12 San Jose Police officers have been targeted with gunfire. Five of those officers have been hit. The suspect in this case, briones, will not be make a Court Appearance until he is discharged from the hospital. The mother and her three children, ages eight, ten and 15, are all okay, at least physically. Were live outside San Jose Police headquarters this evening. Jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. San mateo countys District Attorney says he will not drop the charges, telling ktvu in a statement, quote, while we consider the wishes of victims in all of our decisions, our responsibility as prosecutors is to hold people accountable for their conduct, to allow a person who wanted to kill his wife and children go free would be a dereliction of our duty to the community. A postal worker was robbed in oakland, just blocks from where another carrier was held up months earlier. Our crime reporter, henry lee is live in the newsroom now with the latest henry crystal. These are street level hold ups that have postal workers and the residents they deliver to upset. These are also federal crimes that could lead to federal time. Watch as this postal worker leaves an apartment complex in oaklands adams point neighborhood. A man literally pops up, surprises her, and robs her of postal keys , but it looks like the robber is crouching. It looks to me like behind some bushes. It happened at this Apartment Building at euclid and jane avenues at about 1230 thursday afternoon, and as soon as she steps out the security gate of that Apartment Building, hes there waiting to snatch those keys and run postal inspector Matthew Norfleet says its likely the robber had been tracking the carriers movements. This is somebody who knew what he was looking for, set up, targeted the carrier, set up to give himself the best chance of getting away. The holdup happened exactly two months after another carrier was robbed. While on her rounds, just blocks away, also on euclid avenue near grand avenue. You can hear her screaming off camera. While the robbers dont appear to be the same man, norfleet says its too early to say if the same crew is responsible. This part of adams point includes several mail routes, so theres plenty of postal trucks driving around. They steal their keys. They are not the master keys, and thats how they do it. Neighbors like Daniel Villar says postal workers are especially vulnerable while on the street, targeted by robbers who want to steal mail later. Then its like kind of sad because the other person is just the mailman or the mail delivery is just like doing their job. We spotted this carrier on her rounds on adams street, but she realized her truck was too hot and couldnt run a supervisor had to be called. They had to transfer bins of mail and packages to another truck. Residents say theyre unnerved by the hold ups. Surprising to us, we didnt realize that these postal women were getting targeted and robbed of their keys. We just saw our postman as we walked over. Now the Postal Service is offering rewards of up to 150,000 in any and all hold ups. Anyone with information is asked to contact postal inspectors live in the newsroom. Henry lee, ktvu, fox two news. Henry, thank you. All right, shifting gears to our weather. Sunny skies of the bay area today, a live look at San Francisco. It is beautiful, but get ready for a wet weekend. Were already seeing some clouds out there this evening. Our meteorologist, Roberta Gonzalez joins us live now with a look at the forecast. Roberta that was a pristine look at the city by the bay, wasnt it . I am going to provide you with the change that we have been talking about all week long. Take a look at sfo at this hour. The clouds on approach now roughly down to about 500ft in elevation. And look at the bush there. It is very breezy. We do have wind gusts right now, up to 34mph. All associated with that right there right now. Precipitation is now nicking that northwestern quadrant of the state of california. We do have the clouds on the approach as visible from our live weather camera at sfo. And the green on the screen means, yep, youre going to need your umbrella for saturday. And did i mention we have colder air associated with this system . This is an unseasonable cold winter like system thats going to be rolling into the bay area. Its going to give us more rain tomorrow morning than usually we get for the entire month of may, totaling up anywhere between a half an inch and an inch and a quarter. And the winds will be blustery up to 35mph. And there is a Winter Weather advisory in effect for the greater lake tahoe area. Now, again, i mentioned cooler air mass temperatures tomorrow, taking a complete nosedive anywhere between 41 and 20 degrees colder. And again, were expecting up to a foot of snow around the greater lake tahoe area. Well talk more about that and the Cinco De Mayo forecast and crystal and greg, thats still to come. Thank you roberta. Now coming up, closing arguments in a landmark trial coming up at 530, a federal judge must now decide if google broke the law and root to its dominance in the tech world. You can see that Gray Toyota Corolla that is involved. Its happening right under under that overpass. Chp says they received a call at around 11 this morning reporting a shooting that happened on highway 101 in santa rosa. No injuries were reported. Officers tracked the suspects vehicle to a Shopping Center in rohnert park. When officers approached the car, they say he took off and let them left. Left them in a pursuit. Here at about 330, he stopped there and chp tells us the car has a flat tire. As you can imagine, this has created a traffic nightmare for people on i80 now trying to get home or out to tahoe or on vacation. Well continue to monitor the situation and bring you any updates as we get them. All right, a surge of sea lions taking over pier 39 in San Francisco. More than a thousand of the popular Marine Mammals drawing crowds of tourists and helping the pier revive itself post pandemic. Katie icu tom vacar joins us live from pier 39 now, where sea lions are sealing the deal for businesses there. Tom. They sure are. And i have a look at this. There are at least a thousand of these animals out here. There are about 300 people looking at them, but they outnumber the people three or 4 to 1. Now, since the sea lions lifespan is about 17 years, were seeing it basically here. The Third Generation of them barking up the pier and the bay. Its one of pier 39, largest sea lion gatherings. And just in time they first showed up after the 1989 loma prieta earthquake, drawing enough people then to save the Fishermans Wharf area from the postquake recession. Theyre doing the very same thing now post pandemic. Oh, just look at the crowds that are here today. Its been like this for days now since the news got out. That we now have this incredible resurgence. Unlike seals, sea lions have plainly visible external ear flaps. Experts say theyre here because their favorite food, anchovies, are plentiful right now. I would say about just over a thousand. And thats fluctuated between 900 to about 1200in the last few days. When sea lions are out of the water. Theyre called a colony. When theyre in the water, theyre called a raft. Whatever you call them right now, this is a sea lion. Supermoon its a fabulous gift. Its also a natural attraction. We didnt make this happen. I think the last time i saw these seals was 20 years ago. Drawn here by the sea lions. We met two cousins, one a bay area resident, the other from england whove not seen each other for 35 years. She flew in yesterday. And so when i saw the sun out this morning, i thought a perfect thing would be to take the ferry over to the city and hang out on the wharf, i love it. I think its really important that we start getting a little bit more aware of the nature thats around us. The birds and the sea lions. Its important people, people need to understand were just one part of this earths population. Sea lions are protected by the federal Marine Mammal protection act that forbids touching, feeding or harassing them. They really are funny. Its like a tempest in a teapot. You dont really see anything happening, but theyre creating all this drama and theres crossover to some human behavior, you know, sharing space and get out of my way. Now, this mass group of sea lions is simply not going to be here that much longer, because the male sea lions, especially, are headed south to the channel islands, where they will engage in the annual breeding season. So if youre going to look at them, come on out and enjoy them while you can. Reporting live from pier 39 tom vacar ktvu channel two news. And if you suffer from allergies, you can blame it on the oak and the mulberry trees. As well as your neighbor mowing their grass. Its the grass count that comes into play. But all that goes down tomorrow with our approaching system. Its right over there. But i wanted to illustrate this because everything happening here traverses in an easterly direction. And boy, are we going to have a tornado outbreak anywhere between monday and wednesday and throughout the midsection of the country. All because of our system. Lets go ahead and time it for you. Cloudy tonight, rain beginning in the north bay before sunup, slicing through the entire bay area before lunchtime and then the afternoon. Just a hit and miss. Scattered rain shower. But were going to tally all this up. Tell you just how much rain will accumulate in your neighborhood. And the Cinco De Mayo forecast. Still coming up. All right, roberta, thank you. In plain man speak, that means unfair. The judge did not allow that tape to be played in court. Hicks called it a, quote, Damaging Development and said she was, quote, a little stunned. She was also asked about her dealings with former trump lawyer Michael Cohen and a wall street journal article about Karen Mcdougal and her unpublished story bought by the national enquirer. Closing arguments wrapped up today in washington over whether google illegally maintained a monopoly by paying companies to prioritize their Search Engine on devices. Ktvu Jana Katsuyama spoke with legal experts about this case and joins us from the newsroom with details. Jana. Greg and crystal. Google says that its Search Engine is dominant because it has the best product, but the Us Government argued that google is an illegal monopoly that now owns or controls channels for about 80 of all search queries in the us. The department of justices antitrust lawsuit against google finally reached closing arguments friday. What happens in this case is really going to determine the future of, you know, the really the next 20 years of the internet, mitch stoltz with the Nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation says the case could impact the choices consumers have in the future. The Justice Department argued that google illegally kept a monopoly over the Search Engine business by spending 20 billion a year with companies such as apple in order to be the default Search Engine on devices. Its telling that google was spending upwards of 20 billion a year on on deals to keep Google Search the default Search Engine in various mobile operating systems and web browsers. And that was more money than they spend on research and development. Google attorneys argue that companies such as apple chose them because google has the best product, and that is easy enough for consumers to download a different Search Engine. But exclusive distribution agreements can make competition difficult, even for big companies, according to Santa Clara University law professor eric goldman, Microsofts Bing has competed with google for apples deal and has not been successful. So what chance does a company thats even smaller than a microsoft who might be a new player in the industry, have to go and dislodge a major player like google . Goldman says if the judge rules google is an illegal monopoly, there is a wide range of punishments. You could imagine mandating some kind of choice. You could prevent the distribution agreements altogether. You could impose significant financial consequences on this. You could require apple to do some other kind of competition or beauty show in order to pick its winner. Goldman says the most extreme measure would be in order to break up google. But one concern is whether any remedies will hinder future growth in the industry. The technology will keep moving, but the remedy doesnt evolve and it gets out of sync. I did reach out to google and a spokesman told me that they had no comment today. It is expected that the judge will issue a ruling by late summer or early fall. Greg. A lot of eyes on that ruling. San franciscos mayor is proposing legislation to turn this section of front street between sacramento and california into the citys First Entertainment zone. We want to put a smile, filled with joy on the faces of san franciscans and the people who live and work here. Overall, the zone would allow bars and restaurants to sell alcohol during outdoor events. Duncan ley reopened harringtons bar and grill just before Saint Patricks day, after it had been closed for about four years. He says while business is okay midweek, it falls off dramatically over the weekends. He says an entertainment zone would help the opportunity to activate a street like this so easily, and then to have people spill out into the street from the business and back in and just create this free flow of energy and entertainment, it seems, is really exciting. As a as a business owner, right. The mayor says the legislation is part of her plan to revitalize the downtown. My 30 by 30 plan to bring 30,000 students and residents to downtown by 2030, and some excitement of residents, businesses, restaurants. But fun has to be a part of the mix. The city is quiet down. A lot of people are moving out to the south bay. So if this is the way to keep the Younger Generation and make it like a fun place, that would be such a good idea. But not everyone is so sure itll work. Its definitely interesting. And they do something down here. Its been pretty bad. I mean, im not sure how many people are going to make it all the way down here. Its kind of pretty far from all the other entertainment in the city right now. San francisco is the only city that can have these kinds of entertainment zones. But state senator scott wiener is working on legislation to change that so that other cities can have entertainment zones if they want to. In San Francisco, Christien Kafton, ktvu, fox two news. Again, this is related to a shooting suspect from this morning on the 101 in santa rosa. This is the position that we have been in for a couple of hours since about 330. We believe that suspect in that Gray Toyota Corolla has a flat tire, which is why this vehicle has come to a stop. And this standoff has occurred. Again. We spoke to a chp officer at the top of the 5 00 newscast that told us they were coming up with a plan with how to handle this suspect that they believed to be armed in this situation. They have taken their time and created a plan. And again, were getting a closer look as they have now started to move in and again, trying to protect their officers in this situation as they move in here. And i know that earlier today the officer told us that there was a serious situation. It could be dangerous for members of the public. Now, of course, that interstate is backed up for miles and miles and miles tonight. There is no telling yet when this situation will be resolved, but you can see in the picture there live.
