Very harsh conditions, especially, since some of you need to break out the shovel and get out and just clean up whats been dumped behind from the noreaster, which at this point is now Atlantic Canada issue. Residents up and down the east coast, are busy digging out from the socalled bomb cyclone. But the weather far from over, as Hurricane Force winds are expected to stick around. Heres more now from cbs news correspondent hena doba. A woman in hall massachusetts being rescued by front loader, the first floor of her home flooded as if the snow and winds brought to the east coast by the socalled bomb cyclone werent enough. Boston, and coastal areas nearby, also experienced historic flooding. It was pounding, hitting the sea wall, going above the telephone polls. Nearly 500 National Guard members were called in to assist with flood emergencies, in several state. Most places, though, are still digging out from the snow. Plymouth connecticut got caught off guards by almost foot and a half. We thought we would get 6 inches. While this round of snow has passed, the bigger danger may lie ahead. As extreme cold is expected to freeze, anything, that hasnt been shoveled away. Officials all down the coast are asking people to stay off the roads. Unless youre driving a zamboni, you wont control the vehicle, especially at higher speeds. The snow has moved out, but katie, now what we are talking about the colds. Boy is it cold. We naught new years ivan new years day will be coal, but apparently this is worse than that. Even more harsh than that was, and this is nice long two day stretch of it, no less so we look at storm scan, not much to track here right now. Thankfully. Few little, you know, speckles of purple, or green, that show up on the radar. Heres whats left. Long since making it full departure, but stuck with the chill. Stuck with the wind. Thats going to be with us for the long hall. Now there is clearly a bulls eye from yesterday. Up across new england, we look at the current snow cover here , you can see, how it extends anywhere even from north carolina, that is darkest shade of blue, thats six to 12inch swat. Now, this is little off. Simply, because there are place that is did end up better than a foot. But this is at least a good guide as to how much we ended up with, around philadelphia county, you did end up with 4. 1 inches officially, at Philadelphia International airport, so right within that three to 4inch range here, with the color contouring. But obviously, the bulls ian the brunt of the storm ended up at the shore points. So, snowfall totals when you look at the spread, they tell the story, right . You ended up with a record daily snowfall in Atlantic City as just over 13 inches, but did start snowing wednesday night, so officially 14. 2, dover, 4. 3 inches fell, in bryn mawr, up to five. So, yes, there is quite the difference. You just dont have as much clean up. Half the amount of clean up the further inland you go. But future feels like are very much uniform whether it comes to the cold and how harsh it will feel for everyone. No one will feel like it is above zero any time today. This by 4 00 p. M. By tomorrow, this particular model is little bit more optimistic, that will feel more like positive territory. But we dont really break that until sunday. So, really harsh cold is the story, and as a result here, from this point through saturday. Even sunday pretty harsh but not as windy, monday we crack freezing, woman for wintery mix late in the day, tuesday looks just glorious, sunny and 40 degrees. I was just going to say, youre right, you say glorious , because 40 right now actually does seem and feel like that now. Good morning, everyone, hammy friday. Looking outside right now. So already this morning, weve seen a lot of and the reason for that because it is still very, very slippery out there. Take a look at this crash. At the base of the ben franklin bridge westbound, coming into pa. And not only do we have this accident, all of the flashing light here, do you have put on your brakes, we know the drill but, also, take a look at your road surface that is were dealing with, lots of snow, lots of slush refroze end over , lots of ice out there. So seen on the treated road, most of our majors have been treated at this point, we might still have some ice on, pushed off to the shoulder, or maybe even some slick patches that just happened to make their way back out on to the roadway. Either way, we are seeing accident this morning, and a lot of people will be headed out there this morning, especially if they werent at work yesterday. So, looking out here, we have the crash here, weaver another one schuylkill eastbound at the vine, block that right lane, and another one in hamilton township, new jersey, route 40 before jefferson avenue. That right lane is block there jan, back over to you. All right, meisha, thank you. Continuing our weather coverage now, we shift north to new york where yesterdays storm unloaded more than a foot of snow. Our sister station, cbs2, live in queens, with more on what folks are dealing with there, it is 12 degrees here in fill, apparently not much better there, about 10 degrees there. How are people dealing with all of this snow and ice . Well, a mixed bag, rahel, jan, good morning to you, depending where you are in the city, were seeing a lot of different surfaces here this morning, here in queens, in one of the residential communities, where you can take a look out the window. You can see the plows actually just came through here, minutes ago. About 15 minute ago, completely different story. Some of the sites, believe it or not, had not been cut. Since before the storm. So, a lot of digging out ahead this morning, you can see this , yellow cab driver, with his shovel, trying to dig out as a lot of people will, as they said, their commute is underway this morning, of course as you guys have been talking about, there is a lot of concerns for slipping, sliding, as well as black ice, because it just has been so cold in the leadup to yesterdays storm. So, a busy day ahead for commuters here in new york, now, i will send it back to you, rahel, jan . Thank you, and those pictures were very similar to our streets, even if you wake up early, and you dont have to dust the car off, because the winds is so if you out there. You might have to dig youth car out, because the plows have now plowed you into your parking spot. I know trang do had to do that herself this morning. Oh, really . Just wake up extra early, i guess. From the cbs Broadcast Center in philadelphia. This is cbs3 Eyewitness News. Good morning, everyone, im jan carabeo. Jim donovan is off today. And im rahel solomon, 6 30 , heres what you need to know to start ooh day in the morning minute, today is january 5th, 2018. Fire spread across the street. Eight homes have gone up in flames during raging overnight fire in newark, new jersey. Kids running down the street with no shoes on. We have many inches every snow, if you want to sea ice definately here on the road, secondary road, chalfont drive leading up to academy road, and it is an absolute mess. Right now, it feels more like it is sub zero everywhere the coal has just sunk in here from the depth of the arctic, and thats going to keep things incredibly harsh outside. As if the snow and wind brought to the east coast by the socalled bomb cyclone werent enough. Boston, coastal areas nearby also experienced extreme flood ing. Expected to freeze anything that hasnt been shoveled away like all massive snowstorm, the Weather Channel has given this one a name. Theyre calling it winter storm grayson. Making it the first symptom ever named after a child throwing a tantrum after a child throwing in whole foods. Sponsored by pen medicine. Certainly a lot of terms for that storm, one baltimore reporter even called it a snowy cane. Bomb cyclone, a lot of things happeng there. Well, a lot of names we can laugh at. Pretty much the only things we can laugh at with this casino every weather, katie, first the clean up, still have that today. But now really talking about this extreme cold at least the snow done, obviously since wrapped up, well off to the northeast at this point. But, the cold it has left in its wake, if you thought new years day was bad, put it this way, this is actually way more harsh, in philadelphia. Certainly. Youll be dealing with windchill values it dont even hit zero. Let alone exceed it here. So here is where we currently stand. Go by these numbers, and i feel like ive been saying that every single day, this is where the win chill is at it harsh, through tomorrow, single days worth, long hall stretch of really harsh cold. Everywhere at its harsh, counties and suburbs berks here is the storm. Right now, it is currently in Atlantic Canada, problem more than anything, so now we have the clean up effort that needs to get underway. Here is my it comes to that. If you do have some clean up that still nodes to be done, whether it is your driveway, your porch, whatever, do it in shift. You have got particularly large job, too, you cant be doing this necessarily in just one big stretch of time outside. You are going to have to come in. Because gusts as high as 40, even today, sub zero windchills remain everywhere, all day long, the blowing and drifting still a concern, potentially reduce your visibility here and there, and slick and slow travel is pretty much a given, meisha has got a lot to talk about in that regard. But here is what we will end up into the teens, at best, but with just some sunshine at least overhead. So the snow is over. Meisha, thats not even a issue for the here and now. It is all about the cold. And that harsh wind that comes along with it for now. Yes, and katie like you said, you were talking about the aftermath. Thats he can actually what it is, all of those icy roadways that were left with, some of which are still out, there some of which are kind of hiding, you think, just pavement, but there is black ice out, there and it is causing some problems for us already this morning. So happy friday. Right . So here we go. This is an accident, the base of the ben franklin bridge westbound, as you travel into pa. You see all of the flashing lights, see the outside of the vehicle. By the way when we have people walking outside of their vehicles and it is this slick, be very, very careful, but also take a look at these driving conditions, it is frozen slush out there. Snow, ice, frozen over, still on some of our more traveled roadways and even highways. Looks like kicking ball of ice out of the way. I dont think it is snow, i think it is actually a big piece of ice. Either way, you guys, very, very careful, drive very careful, because of the conditions out there. Schuylkill eastbound past 30th l compromised, because of another accident. A lot of snow outside when you went to bed, getting up this morning, guess what, it is still there. Yes, that snow combined with ice is making for dangerous driving conditions today. Traffic low live at frankford avenue, folcroft, and trang, you have moved since last time we saw you, did the snow and ice give you any trouble as you drove . Really didnt, because weve been staying on the main roadways here, like frankford as you mentioned, pretty clear, all the way from the far northeast here to frankford, did pretty awesome job of plowing this, again, as weve been saying all morning, the trouble comes when you talk about side street. See the el running above me. But, yes, you can see there is a small colt g, light coating of ice still on the roadways people find the most trouble here, actually, getting out of parking spot. I know i had trouble with the frozen snow, trying to get my car out, so once youre able to get off the side street main road, you should have no problems at all get to go work but for now, live in frankford , trang do, cbs3, Eyewitness News. The storm yesterday turned streets into rivers, and in massachusetts, the National Guards was deployed to help residents evacuate their homes the storm also brought lots of snow in boston, prompting Public Schools to be closed again today. This is how it look in the city at the height of the snowfall. Unfortunately, things are only going to get worse. This weekend will be dangerously cold. Make sure that you dress for the weather, dress in layers, frostbite is a racing in this cold weather. Many communities along the east coast are under went chill advisories, watches, or warnings, this weekend. The same goes cents for here at home. Katie, yesterday, not the greatest. Today, shaping up not to be the greatest either. Actually colder t and tomorrow than what weve had to deal with with the recent colds snap. By the way, remember, we dropped below freezing the day after christmas, we havent actually at this time it ever since. Waiting. It has been such a long stretch of incredibly harsh cold, and now it is just at it worse. So lets look at the eyewitness weather watchers at the moment reporting some very , very harsh cold themselves. We have a lot of single digit values here, we zoom it out just one time, yes, almost everybody is at least within reason, couple of degrees shy, or just exceeding the 10 degrees mark. But the wind chills that come in are what we will i tell the story here. So we look, lets do this. That delay get me every single time. Ill wait this time. And, yes, there you are. All right, so, out in nottingham, fran six below zero for windchill, eileen gilbertsville, five below. The one that takes the cake at the moment, ed, at glenn, 12 below for windchill at his house, but phil in chestnut hill, and it feels like it is ten below there. So, this is not confined to just the outlying suburb, even in philadelphia, and sections of it, it is feeling incredibly harsh right now. So, it is just brutal out there. Lets switch gears, move it on over to the maps, talk about record cold. And are we actually going to hit it . Definitely close call right now. The record coldest low that weve recorded, on both the this upcoming saturday, sunday ; 4 degrees. Setback in different years respectfully, even in 2014, we hit record low of 4 degrees. But, 1896 when the record goes all the way back, for saturday , but we are getting awfully close with the temperatures calling for six anfive from saturday to sunday, respectfully, looking at the wind gusts, this is what is causing the issue. Youve got such harsh windchill that again it is frankly dangerous to be out in this now the ski report is awesome. If you are trying to hit the slopes this weekend, youre going have plenty of open slopes, trails, and really good multi foot base to work with here. But look at the days ahead in this forecast. One every these days clearly not like the rest. Youre going to go out sunday probably your best bet, because it is a lot quiet where wind, windchills no where near as harsh, as least back to the teens at least closer to average. But we dont actually break out of the sub freezing territory, meisha, until monday. And even then we could see wintery mix move in. Okay, sounds good. I cant stop staring at the 40 on tuesday, katie. Looks so nice. Good morning, happy friday. So yes. Today were just dealing with the aftermath, those icy conditions. Make no mistake about it, still out there, posing some problems for thus morning, do have accident here, base of the ben franklin bridge westbound into pat looks lick it is starting to get remedy right now. But i want to keep this picture shot for you just to show you the road conditions. You can see all of that frozen slush out there. So, we do still have ice out there. And it is like i said making us have some accidents out on the roadways, schuylkill eastbound, past 30th street, blocking that right lane, we have an accident there. And, in hamilton township, new jersey, route 40, harding highway eastbound before jefferson avenue. That right lane is blocked there, overall, looks can be little deceiving, because i know on my way in, the pavement, the concrete, actually looks like it was dry and in some areas it really was. Then when you move off to the shoulder we got slick spots. Take it easy this friday morning, lot of people who stayed home yesterday are going to be jumping on the roadway today. Youll see the high tech inventions of yesteryear.
