Despite COVID-19, tourists have continued to come to Key West and drink. Some say the pandemic is an opportunity to re-evaluate the island's hard-partying ways.
People have been drinking more during the pandemic. Almost a quarter of adults in the Keys were already heavy or binge drinkers. That's the highest rate in Florida. Now some in Key West are rethinking the hard-partying scene for a post-pandemic future.
Like a lot of people, Dawn Wilder first saw Key West as a tourist.
"Oh my goodness, we drank far more than we ever did back home," she said.
When she moved to Key West, she realized it wasn't only the tourists who drank a lot. Drinking during the day — and drinking every day — is pretty normal in the city.
