Critics say the measure limits of free speech and others claim it chose zero tolerance for antisemitism. To all of you joining us on pbs in the United States and everyone watching around the globe, welcome. Hamas says it has released two american hostages for what it calls humanitarian reasons. They are from chicago. The mother and daughter were among some 200 captives abducted by hamas during terror attacks in israel october 7. The Israeli Prime Ministers Office assess the freed hostages are being taken to a military base. Lets bring in a journalist in jerusalem. What more can you tell us about the hostages released . Reporter the mother and daughter from outside chicago were visiting israel and staying in a kibbutz just outside the gaza strip, visiting family when the attack took place on the seventh of october. They were hiding in a safe room and that was the last time they communicated with their mobile phones. From there, they were taken captive to the gaza strip by hamas. Today they were released. Anchor among the hostages, many need care, elderly and sick people, babies. Can we expect more of them to be released . Reporter this is exactly what hamas announced today. They said you can see it on their telegram channel, there is a hamas decision to release the civilians, according to the statement. They will release them once they have the proper security situation that would enable it. That means they cannot release them, thats what i would read into the statement, they cannot release them while israel is bombarding the gaza strip, while there is no possibility technical possibility to release them to the other side. Anchor we know very little at this point. This could be the result of negotiations. Who has taken the lead in the back channel talks with hamas . Reporter its very clear qatar is emerging as an important player in all of this. Qatar has very good relations with United States of america and at the same time very good relations with hamas. In the statement that hamas released, they are seeing they released these two women because of qatar. In another statement, they are saying their efforts, they are thinking both egypt and qatar. It seems like these are the main players acting behind the scenes in order to release at least at the first stage, the civilians outside the gaza strip. Anchor a release that the u. S. And red cross have also been taking credit for. Thank you. We can get the view from washington, d. C. We are joined by our correspondent. These are the first hostages released by hamas since the october 7 attacks. What have u. S. Officials said . Reporter it feels like today is a small light at the end of what has been very dark days for this administration. The u. S. President has released a statement about the two hostages that have been released from hamas. President biden said he was thrilled that these two hostages have been released and they have the full support of the u. S. Government as they heal and try to recover from this ordeal, that we hope the worst of it is behind them. In that same statement, the president said the administration has not seized the effort to release though still being held, confirmation that there are indeed more u. S. Citizens among the dozens being held by hamas in the gaza strip. This administration has been pretty tightlipped about what kind of efforts at theyve not gone into detail about what efforts they are doing to secure the release of hostages but there have been some media reports suggesting the u. S. Government and european governments are trying to convince the is really counterparts the israeli counterparts to stop ground offensives to allow for secret talks to release more civilians. We also know from reports that hamas, a group designated as a Terror Organization by the u. S. And other european countries, has signaled a willingness to release more civilians with nothing in return. So no exchange. Another thing that jumped out to me in the statement is the president of course thanked israel but he also thanked qatar. Qatar has emerged as a perfect mediator, as it has very good relations with the u. S. And hamas. There are several hamas leaders that live in doha and qatar has played this role before. They were the mediator in a controversial Prisoner Exchange between the u. S. And iran. As this moves forward and the administration tries to release more hostages we can expect that qatar, given its unique role, will continue to contribute in the hopes of releasing more hostages. Anchor we certainly hope they succeed. What we know about the other u. S. Citizens held by hamas, briefly if you can . Reporter we dont have many details. We know these two hostages that have been released, reportedly the mother was in poor health. Perhaps that is why she was released, because hamas they have taken these hostages but they also have to take care of them and perhaps that is more difficult given the constant bombardment. There are around 200 hostages taken by hamas during the terror attacks. This ordeal is far from over for many more families. Even though this is a glimmer of hope. Anchor thank you for the update. The United Nations secretarygeneral has visited the rafah Border Crossing between egypt and palestine. The you in says more than 2 Million People are at risk of diseases. People are lining up the border but are not being allowed into gaza. This is not a normal humanitarian operation, is in operation in a war zone. That is the reason why i have appealed for a humanitarian peace cease fire. It is a precondition for delivery. We dont want to punish the gaza people twice. First because of the war and second because of the lack of humanitarian aid. But it is clear that a humanitarian cease fire would make things much safer for everybody. Anchor gazas Hamas Run Health Ministry says that more than 4000 palestinians have been killed. Israel has continued shelling, including in the south where it had previously told those in gaza to go for their safety. Palestinians are waiting for the humanitarian aid to cross the border from egypt. Reporter they are ready and waiting. A percentage of these aid trucks supposed to be allowed through the rafah crossing, the only crossing into gaza not allowed by not controlled by israel. 20 in all aid trucks. 2. 5 Million People need assistance. 20 trucks is a drop in the ocean of need right now in gaza. Reporter on the others of the crossing, mayhem and despair. Even if Southern Gaza is where israel told northern gazans to go for safety sake. The overflowing hospital in the south took in even more wounded for critical care. There is no safety, nowhere safe in gaza. You have to be ready to die than stay in your house paid your house. When there is a threat conducted against israel from the south we will strike. Reporter israels army will soon move into the gaza strip. I promise you whoever sees gaza now from afar will see it from the inside. Good luck. Reporter an Israeli Ground operation will likely first focus on the north with hamas expected to put a fierce resistance. All of that pushing more gazans southward in need of food and medical supplies. On the others of the rafah crossing, aid supplies stream into the airport, destined to join the backup waiting to get into Southern Gaza. Anchor if israel launches a ground offensives offensive into gaza it will have to deal with a Sophisticated Network of tunnels under the territory used by hamas and others ballistic groups, perhaps hundreds of kilometers long. It is known as the gaza metro. Reporter one of many israeli airstrikes on gaza, this one targeting the Tunnel Network according to israel. Destroying the tunnels used by hamas has long been a priority for israels military. The network runs underneath gaza, connecting its cities, running to the border with israel and also connecting this trip with egypt. The tunnels let militants store weapons, launch attacks and are believed to contain command centers. They are also the lifelines to the outside world. Passageways for essential goods and weapons under a longstanding israeli blockade. This animated video released by israel shows what they supposedly look like inside. Hamas has been developing the Tunnel Network since i came into power in 2007. Recently hamas claimed it is 500 kilometers long. Groups use tunnel exits to launch rockets, and the launchers are then brought back underground, making them nearly impossible to see and target. Israel has tried palm boarding the tunnels, in 2014, 2017 and 2021, to destroy the network, without success, but with significant civilian casualties. The Tunnel Network is reportedly woven underneath marketplaces, apartment blocks and hospitals. Anchor a former u. K. Military Intelligence Officer believes the tunnels will be a considerable challenge for israeli troops if they enter gaza. Frank the first reason is what youve just seen, the extensive Tunnel Network, the gaza metro described, which gives an underground element to this. Israeli soldiers wont have to just look at two their sides to their sides or up, but they will figuratively and literally be looking underground. That means they have to look behind as well, because even if they secure an area they can never be sure if they secured all of the tunnel entrances and exits. But they are more than aware of that. Theres a more hightech element as well on both sides israel will probably be deploying drones, systems that may be driven or directed by ai, there is some evidence theyve already done that. Reconnaissance drones flying through buildings looking for human beings so planners can select targets. As Israeli Soldiers look up, they will look for drones. Anchor we saw briefly how tunnels have been used to this point, but with a ground offensive by the Israeli Forces imminent, how do you expect hamas to use them . Frank they will be using them first of all as passive defense and we saw that in the film. All that means is it is shelter. Their headquarters, command and control systems and communications will all be centered around the tunnel system. That is one reason why you are seeing such an extensive series of airstrikes in this preparatory phase, what the defense minister said, there were three phases. They are trying to collapse as many tunnels as they can as well as deliver as much intelligence. Thats where we are with that, and hamas will be using the tunnels to transport weapons of course and personnel, which is why israels troops will have to be really careful, even if they clear in area, they can never be quite sure it is truly clear. Israel has prepared for this, they have special tunneling units, they have used the highest and latest form of technology and will use that to destroy, or if necessary, if hostages are there, enter the tunnels. But it will be tough. Anchor is there any way to know how successful they have been the airstrikes in destroying this vast system of tunnels under gaza . Frank every one of those airstrikes you see on your screen is subject to Battle Damage assessment. That will assess the results of the bombing against the objective. They will have some assessment as to what is achieved. Frankly the only way of doing that is to wait and see. If the tunnels are still there is really is will find out soon enough because ambushes will appear from them. Anchor a pleasure speaking to you again, byebye. Palestinians took part in friday prayers in East Jerusalem as worshipers under 50 were barred from the mosque. Some roads were also closed. Joe biden is urging americans to support tens of billions of dollars in funding for israel and ukraine. He says they are fighting for democracy. He stressed that backing both nations was vital for u. S. National security. The German Foreign minister has called for the Immediate Release of hostages held by hamas. After meeting israeli leaders, she says israel has the right to defend itself but urged protection for civilians. She also announced an aid package for gaza. Meanwhile, families of hostages taken in the terror attack have traveled to israel to take more action. A minister said germany is doing everything in his power to secure their release. My sister. In this picture, she is knitting hats for newborn babies in the hospital. She was kidnapped with hamas by hamas terrorist along with other family members. Their relatives have come here to keep pressure on the government. This is mr. Scholz and me. I told him we dont want to interfere with german politics but you have to do something. Reporter the attacks have left them with sleepless nights and endless thoughts about loved ones. Our mission here is to try our best that germany react against terror. Not only that doesnt help. We need now work and not sympathy. Anchor israel is planning to evacuate a city following days of clashes with hezbollah fighters along the border with lebanon. The city is home to 20,000 people and is just two kilometers from the border. Israel has been steadily evacuating communities along the northern frontier. Reporter these people have driven north to pick up their father. They are taking himself and out of range of rockets fired across the border by hezbollah. My father is leaving and we will take him to my home and try to survive. [air raid siren] reporter this is why they are leaving, sirens wail as rockets stream into israel from lebanon. This city has already been hit by those munitions. The army says it is time to go. This kind of evacuation allows the idf to expand operational freedom to act against hezbollah terrorists. Reporter many residents have already left before the enforced evacuation. But they are confident they will return. Right now it is very difficult, like my brother said, but we are going to win. No one can beat us. That is it. That is what the world needs to understand. We are going to fight and fight hard. Reporter residents fleeing the north are joining tens of thousands of israelis who have left their homes in the south near gaza. Anchor in berlin, demonstrations have been banned with police siding fears for public safety. Hundreds of people have been arrested at rallies in support of palestinians and that has raised questions about freedom of speech. Reporter for days, large groups of angry men throwing rocks, bottles and even fireworks at police, who responded with water cannon. Hundreds have been arrested. Parts of the city on a knife edge since police band propalestinian protests, and officials said they have been used to incite hatred, calls for the killing of jews or the destruction of israel. At this mosque in berlin, worshipers say banning protests is the wrong approach. This is also included in german law as long as they are not violent. You have the feeling the state uses freedom of speech when it wants, that means for the Israeli Citizens but not palestinians. Reporter speaking at a Jewish School in the capital, the head of the centerright cdu party said he baxley band backs the ban. There has to be a ban on certain activities by certain people and there will have to be a ban on demonstrations if what happens is what we have seen often enough. Too often in the last 10 days. Namely that there have been violent demonstrations. Reporter that an echo of the political mainstream. For germany, the focus now very much on zero tolerance of antisemitism. Anchor our correspondent told us more about the demonstrations. Reporter weve just seen pictures of the demonstrations, which were banned for fear of incitement, for fear of antisemitism turning into calls for violence for instance against jews or israel. These bannings led to clashes. This is an assessment that the authorities have to make. There have been similar demonstrations elsewhere in germany that have been entirely peaceful. It is possible this situation is particular to berlin where it is particularly heated. There were other antisemitic incidents such as stars of david being sprayed on certain buildings and even an attempted attack on a Jewish Cultural Center with molotov cocktails. So yes, these kind of things have been increasing. Maybe one should say that antisemitism itself is not illegal in germany but what is illegal is calling for violence or acting in a violent manner. Hamas says it has released two american hostages for what it calls humanitarian reasons. They have been named as judith and natalie raanan. The mother and daughter were among 200 captives taken by hamas on october 7. Stay with us, after a short break i will be back to take you through the day. Hope to see you then. It is 10 00 p. M. Here in the french capital. You are watching live from paris, and here are the stories making headlines. Two americans being held by hamas have been released. A mother and daughter now in the hands of israelis. They were among 200 hostages kidnapped in the attack two weeks ago. Dozens of trucks filled with humanitarian aid are stuck in gazas border with egypt. We want to cross now live to u. S. Secretary of state Antony Blinken making some comments. We expect to see them very shortly. Over the coming hours, they will receive any support and assistance they need, and of course, we are very anxious to be able to reunite them with their loved ones. We welcome their release. We share in the relief that their families, friends, and loved ones are feeling, but theres still 10 additional americans who remain unaccounted for in this conflict. We know some of them are being held hostage by hamas along with an estimated 200 other hostages held in gaza. They include men, women, young boys, young girls, elderly people from many nations. Every single one of them should be released. Since the earliest hours of this crisis, the president has made clear that he will do Everything Possible to secure the release of every hostage. During my own recent travel to the region, i pressed our partners to do everything they can to help us secure the release. Since that time, we continue to work relentlessly with partners to do just that. I cannot speak publicly about the details of these efforts. I know you understand that, but the urgent work to free every single american, to free all other hostages continues, as does our work to secure say passage out of gaza for the americans who are trapped there. In this particular instance, i want to thank the government up qatar for their input and assistance. When i was in israel last week, i met with families of u. S. Citizens that hamas has taken hostage. President biden, too, had the opportunity to hear directly from families of hostages. It is impossible to put into words the agony they are feeling of not knowing the fate of their loved ones, worrying relentlessly about them, their safety, their security, and wellbeing. No family anywhere should have to experience this torture. What i shared with the families as the president did as well is that the United States government in its entirety will work every day to secure the release to bring their loved ones home. They have my sump a solemn pledge that we will continue to do that, working as though these family members were our own. With that, i am happy to answer questions. You said you would not talk about specific details, but im wondering, since you were in qatar, and i have an office they host the hamas office, if you could elaborate a little bit on what their role was and if you think that channel is worthwhile. Secondly, a lot has been made by you, by the president , by other officials how is it important for israel if and when it begins a ground incursion into gaza for it to respect the rules of war. Im curious if you think that to date, if israel is respecting those rules and laws. Excellent questions. You will understand that because this is an ongoing effort to get americans who are hostage in this moment in gaza, to secure their release to get them back to their families, i really cannot go into any details about what we are doing, how we are doing it. All i can say with regard to qatar in this instance is we very much appreciate their assistance. Beyond that, i really cannot say. Getting the hostages back home back to their loved ones is the most important thing. With regard to how israel is conducting operations, let me speak to this very clearly. We said we believe strongly that israel has not only the right but the obligation to defend itself against it is very hard to put into words the nature, the barbarity of the attacks. They have an obligation to defend themselves against it, to do what they can to make sure it does not happen again, but we have made it very clear as well that the way israel does this matters. In particular, it is important operations be conducted in accordance with international law, the law of war, as applicable, and that everything be done to minimize the loss of civilian life. We continue to focus on that just as we are also focusing on getting assistance to people in gaza who need it. There will be plenty of time to make assessments about how these operations were conducted, but i just can say for the part of the United States, this continues to be important to us, and again, this is what distinguishes us, distinguishes europe from terrorist groups like hamas, which not only have absolutely no concern for innocent human life, they intentionally use innocent human lives to hide behind, to use as quite literally human shields, knowing that civilians invariably will suffer in conflict. Following up on that, hamas has issued a statement. I know with huge caveat that it is a terror group, but they have said that all the hostages, the civilian hostages, which include the americans, could be released, that this could be the start of something bigger. Would this be a moment where, under israels discretion, obviously, it would be wise to give it more time to see if this is a moment, since the ground invasions have not started, to see if you can get more people out . In the president s statement, he expressed his thanks to israel to qatar, rather, in partnership with israel. A notable connection there. Does this give you hope that despite everything that has happened there could still be a broader relationship and avoid a wider war . Thanks. Two things first, it is very simple. Hostages should be released immediately and unconditionally. That has been our position since day one. It remains our position. To your point, i would not take anything that hamas says at face value. Im not sure anyone in this room would take at face value or report something isis had said. Same applies to hamas. Our position is clear. Every hostage needs to be released and needs to be released now. There is no doubt from my own travels in the region that one of the important things throughout this very difficult period and since the unconscionable attack by hamas is to continue to find ways for countries to cooperate, coordinate when it is in their interest to do so. We will continue to look to that. Any cooperation that facilitates the release of hostages, any cooperation that can facilitate the distribution of humanitarian assistance to the people of gaza where it is so desperately needed, we work on that every day. I think i can say we have seen some of that cooperation. The broader question i think is really important because what is abundantly clear is the vast majority of countries, the vast majority of people want the same thing. They want a region where countries are working together, where relations are normalized, where there is greater integration, where people are working together, studying together, traveling, doing business. The majority of people want that, and we want to see as well the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian People fulfilled in the context of that kind of region. It remains very much alive in every conversation i have. The alternative is equally clear and very stark. It is hamas, hezbollah, iran. It is destruction, death, terrorism, darkness. The more we are able to make real that first vision, the more im convinced that is the vision that everyone or virtually everyone will subscribe to. Even as we are working through this challenge, this crisis, it is important to keep that vision alive because it is important that people know that there is an alternative and everything they hope for and aspire to will be best addressed through what i have just described, that first vision, will continue to do that. What can you tell us about the condition of the americans who have been released . And do you have any details of the americans being held hostage . And on the rafah crossing, what is the hold up . I cannot speak to the condition of the americans. First because of their privacy. Second we have not had a chance yet to get our own team in two see them, to evaluate them, and most importantly, to reunite them with their loved ones. I am sure that will come out of the hours and days ahead, but i dont have anything for you on that now. Nor do i have anything on the status of or condition of americans who continue to be held by hamas. With regard to the rafah crossing, as you know, when some of us were traveling to meet in the past week, getting assistance moving was among my top priorities. We have worked really hard with the government of israel and the government of egypt to do just that. And secure an understanding that we have developed a plan to move assistance. That understanding was cemented by President Biden when he was in israel and also speaking to president lcc president alsisi of israel. Since then, we have been working with the United Nations, with israel, to put that into motion. My expectation is that you will see that really soon. Thank you. Thanks, everyone. We were listening there to u. S. Secretary of state Antony Blinken talking about these two hostages, a mother and daughter, both americans, and i said to be in israeli custody. They were among the 200 or so people kidnapped by militant group hamas during that initial assault two weeks ago. Lets cross to our washington correspondent. Mr. Blinken was saying 10 other americans remain in the custody of hamas. What do we know about these two americans and how their release came about . 10, first of all, is significant. That is more of a clear number we have heard the past few days, but we will come back to that. At least two have been released now. The girl just graduated high school and was with her mother judith to celebrate the jewish holiday. They were about a mile away from the gaza strip when they were taken. We learned they were released by hamas on humanitarian grounds. Judiths health is said to not be in the greatest condition. The red cross gave them over to the Israeli Defense forces who have sent them to an Israeli Military camp where they are being checked for their health and where entire waiting for them. We have heard they will head to the american embassy. That is also fresh information. Hamas said they were releasing these two to prove to the American People and the world that the claims made by biden and his fascist administration are false and baseless. That obviously hard to square given what we have seen take place in israel at the hands of hamas in recent days. These two were residents of chicago. We know that as well. It is also understood that the u. S. Was in talks with israel and also qatar about the release of them because we know hamas does not speak directly to the u. S. And vice versa. Antony blinken thanking the qatars and israelis for the role that they played in securing the release of these two hostages. What has been the reaction in washington to the release of these two women . Just before we got that press conference by Antony Blinken, we got a statement from the white house, President Biden he is overjoyed that they will be reunited with their families and thanking the egyptian and Israeli Governments for thanking the qatari and Israeli Governments for their help on the issue. There are some still being held hostage. We know there are about 200 people generally, israelis and other nationalities, being held by hamas and other groups. Again, it is being very vague, the American Government, on the numbers it has given to us. We now know that 10 are unaccounted for, but we have been told in the past that of others unaccounted for being held hostage, we know that about a handful are being held hostage. The American Government, the white house, the National SecurityCouncil Still not giving us any clear numbers on that, probably for security reasons. They have also received no proof of life videos. We saw the video from the french israeli citizen a few days ago that was posted. We have had no videos like that from any american citizen that we are aware of, but the American Government is said to be keeping in close contact with the Israeli Government. Joe biden speaking to Benjamin Netanyahu once again this morning just for this news came to light. Ive spoken with some analysts in the United States who said that these hostages being released as a release of pressure almost four hamas, as a way to get israel to delay any impending ground invasions they could be planning, which is actually expected to be imminent. We know the Israeli Government has given the green light to the army to eradicate hamas, it says, but that does not necessarily mean they will release the other 200 hostages who are currently being held. A spokesperson a few moments ago saying that even though these hostages has have been released, that does not change israels plans for any ground invasion. We are hearing that the release of these hostages, sources are saying this could be a first step to discussions with the release of more hostages. 10 other americans, plus 200 other people still in custody by the militant group hamas. It is time now for our backchecking program, truth or fake. Factchecking program. There has been an Online Search in disinformation. We are seeing many false narratives, particularly concerning alleged clashes happening abroad. What can you tell us . Thats right. Since october 7, we have seen on social media a flood of videos and photos claiming to show alleged clashes or alleged violence stemming from propalestinian protests, and that has made it difficult to sort fact from fiction. Theres also a torrent of real imagery and real accounts that have been very intermingled with users sharing out of context videos or pushing false claims, and that can create damaging false narratives about the situation. We start here with this post on x. We can see that it had a quarter of a one million views. Here it is in english with over 15,000 views. This post went on to claim that propalestinian supporters set alight the Israeli Embassy in bahrain. Quick look at that video as well, we can see indeed people throwing what looks like firebombs of some sort at a building that they claim is the Israeli Embassy. This is really furthering that narrative that this conflict is increasing violence. I did a reverse image search and fact checked this video and in fact found that i actually was led to this Youtube Video that does, as you can see, look shockingly similar to our viral video, except this Youtube Video was posted 10 years ago in december of 2012. It is captioned bahrain at a Police Station received and burned. To do a little further fact checking, i did a geolocation search as well to confirm what we are looking at. Those same turrets lets get a better picture to see what we are looking at theres same turrets from the Police Station. What we are looking at in this video does match, so we are looking at a demonstration from 10 years ago at a Police Station in bahrain, not the Israeli Embassy. This has nothing to do with israel, palestine, or palestinian protests. I also have another example to show you. This one in barcelona claiming to show prohamas forces riding with police in the streets of barcelona. Indeed, there is also a video showing a clash between Security Forces and demonstrators. Again, in order to fact check this, i start off with a few key words in my search police, clashes, etc. And of course, a reverse image search. One of my favorites. I found this same video was posted in an article in the daily mail in 2020. The same video attached to an article reporting on antilockdown protests in barcelona in 2020, so the existence of that video in a dated article does confirm that it takes place in barcelona, but it is not linked in any way to the current conflict or palestinian protests. It is true that there has been instances of protest to this conflict. Yes, that is right. In the last two weeks, we have seen tens of thousands of people take to the streets in demonstrations and in support of the palestinians in palestinians under bombardment in gaza. France and germany, home to the largest jewish and muslim communities in europe, those countries have gone on to ban these protests, and they say it is in order to prevent antisemitism and keep public order. In berlin on wednesday, there was an unauthorized protest that took place in support of palestine, and 107 people were arrested with at least 65 Police Officers injured. It is worth mentioning that is home to the largest palestinian diaspora in europe as well. If we look at the protests that have taken place in france since the october 12 been ban, police have issued 827 finds since then with around 43 people at least arrested and in that day alone, on the day it happened, there was a protest. Police actually used tear gas at the time to break up that protest, and at least 10 people were arrested that day alone. This is quite broad to state this narrative that protests like this are increasing violence or clashes in europe, but there has been a bit of violence at these protests, but what is really clear is that it is more important than ever to verify and check everything you see online, especially when the issue is as sensitive as this one. Absolutely. Thank you for that. The humanitarian crisis in gaza is growing more dire by the minute. Trucks full of humanitarian aid are waiting to cross into the territory but are stuck on the egyptian side of the border. The United Nations secretarygeneral traveled to the rafah crossing, pleading for that aid to be allowed in. Hours ago, u. S. President joe biden said the trucks needed to cross the border to gaza in the next 24 to 48 hours. Over 200 trucks filled with desperately needed food, medicine, and water purifiers are on standby on the egyptgaza border waiting for the goahead to deliver 3000 tons of aid to gaza via the only route not controlled by israel. These trucks are not just trucks. They are the lifeline. They are the difference between life and death for so many people in gaza. Aid shipments are pouring in from jordan, turkey, and the united arab emirates. Two to three planes a day from humanitarian organizations or governments, but for now, the deal negotiated by President Biden with egypt allows just 120 trucks via the rafah crossing. Many residents are down to one meal a day and drinking nonpurified water. Shortages have been exacerbated by the displacement of one million palestinians to the south of the enclave and by israels ongoing bombardment. Any further escalation or even continuation would just be catastrophic for the people of gaza. Eight officials have urged israel to add fuel to supplies it will allow to keep hospitals running. Israel wants confirmation that fuel will not make its hands make its way into the hands of hamas. We do everything in our power to ensure that that does not happen. Gazas overwhelmed hospitals are rationing dwindling supplies, using vinegar to treat infected wounds and at night having to perform surgeries by the light of mobile phones. As israeli airstrikes continue, the arrival of the first convoy is more urgent than ever. That is it for now. We will take a break and be back with the latest world headlines in just a couple of minutes.
