'A just verdict'
Following Floyd's death, all three departments, as well as town select boards, issued statements decrying Floyd's death and the actions of Chauvin and other officers at the scene.
Chelmsford Police Chief James Spinney -- who spoke at a vigil last summer -- said, "My reaction to the verdict is that I think it's just...I personally was appalled at what happened, and my feeling is the Police Department was appalled and disgusted."
Spinney gave a presentation at a recent meeting of the town's Diversity, Racial Equity and Inclusion Committee, founded after Floyd's death. Spinney said, "We've been working on modifications for years, including de-escalation tactics."
