This. We have to warn here that it is hard to watch. [speaking in a global language] joining me now our correspondents who is live in israel. Nbcs foreign correspondent, molly, hunter is with us as. Well and the nbc security analyst. I want to start with you, rough. What casten what youre seen. Yeah, katie and just the last hour, Israel Security cabinet has formally declared a state of war in response to what tickles the murderous Terrorist Attack of gaza. They are talking about scenes like the one behind me. This is all thats left of what was an Israeli Police station at the heart of the city. It is overrun by gunmen. Katie, everywhere here, you can see debris from the Ferocious Gun Battle that follows. If my Camera Operator turns the camera here, you can see this is the remains of a jacket here. We dont know this belong to one of the hamas militants, or to an israeli soldier. Everywhere, katie, im not going to zoom in on, but in that tree there is still a body of one of these hamas militants. There are police cars in this area that are riddled with bullets. The Israeli Forces did eventually retake control of this area, but they were forced to destroy this Police Station using bulldozers. Throughout the day, we have been hearing israeli airstrikes overhead as fired or jets fly into gaza to continue strikes against hamas militants. There is still more than 24 hours after the Surprise Attack began, pockets of fighting inside of israel itself. Where there are still believed to be hamas militants at large. Katie, as israel mulls its options, the possibility of a largescale Ground Incursion, and one thing that is waned so heavily on the mind of netanyahu and others as what you just showed. The fact that there are israeli civilians being held hostage by hamas, by Palestinian Islamic jihad, inside of gaza right now. So this is not just a military operation, this is a Hostage Rescue on a scale, perhaps unlike anything the world has seen for generations now. We do not know exactly how many israelis are being held captive inside of gaza. We do know that israel will go to enormous lengths to get its people back. Israeli government also alarm not just that rocket fire in lebanon this morning, but also Egypts Foreign Ministry confirming the two israeli tourists were murdered today and the city of alexandria. The sign that the violence that started here in the holy lands may not start there. There are serious concerns that tension spread throughout the region. Raf, 600 dead in israel right now according to local media, which is just a shocking number, and something we havent seen in israel in decades. The country has now officially voted for they triggered article 40. How does that change things . What happens now . Well, katie according to Prime Minister netanyahu, there will be massive retaliation for the Surprise Attack. They dont know what form that will take, but i can tell you that all signs are pointing to a large scale is really Ground Incursion into the deathly populated gaza strip. As were driving to still vote today, we will see israeli tanks on trailers off the side of the road. We are seen as artillery being moved into position. We are Hearing Artillery throughout the day. Israel has called out thousands and thousands of his reservists. I can tell you, all signs under this newly declared state of war seem to be that israel is preparing for a ground offensive. As you, know katie, there are 2 million civilians who live in the gaza strip. This is under the control of the hamas militants. There is nowhere to, run nowhere to hide where the fighting comes to that does the Populated Areas of gaza city, and what has already been a devastating death toll of both sides. It may rise further as this war continues. There is nowhere for them to go. Let me ask you one more question that israel is going to great lands to achieve their own, to get them out, there are hostages. There are some on the right in israel, some lawmakers are saying forget about that, lets just flatten gaza city. Flatten it entirely. Dont worry about our hostages. Netanyahu has made alliance with those on the right. Do we have any indication, publicly, of where hes at on that . Will it be a grand incursion, as you talk about, on the inside of this. Yeah, katie, i can tell you that there is a broad consensus from left to right inside of israel that this is a country that will go to enormous lengths to get its people back. You might remember in 2011, israel freed more than 1000 palestinian prisoners to secure the release of one israeli soldier. He was being held captive by hamas inside of gaza. That is a decision taken by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a leader on the right. It was, in some ways, its a humbling moment for israel. They were forced to release so many of these convicted militants. It was a step that was almost universally agreed on here. I think this is a universal consensus in israel about getting these hostages back. The question is whether its feasible. There is almost an underground city and gaza. Beneath gaza city, tunnels. You can bet that hamas, however many hostages, we dont know the exact number, are taking these hostages. It is spreading them out. It is trying to make it as difficult as possible for israel to rescue these people. One of the concerns, of course, for the Israeli Military, is if they go into gaza on a large scale, how they do so without losing hostages. Russ sanchez, thank you very much. Lets talk about the concern that they are going to get into this conflict for there. Weve seen the attacks in the north, in the contested area of golan heights. What is the word about what is expected to happen next from that . Yeah, katie, we do have some new information on that. We have been talking about this rocket fire and this farm area. This is an area of the golan heights. This is occupied lebanese territory. This was not hit farther into israel, beyond the golan heights. At the moment, the peacekeeping forces in southern lebanon, even according to the Israeli Military, right now it seems that that has reinforced the peacekeeping forces. They say that it is volatile but stable. In a statement yesterday, they basically express solidarity with the Palestinian Hamas militant group. They say they are not neutral in this war. Our history, our, guns are rockets, there with you. Very clearly, they gave the palestinian factions and militants and lebanon permission to join the fight, but not to provoke too much. I think at the moment, volatile but staple is a pretty solid way to describe that northern border. That is the major fear, and why many allies, many western capitals in the region were really and a wait and see. What will israel do that could possibly involve and iran response . But right now, i think that northern border, at least for right, now were watching closely. So they claim theyre not going to get involved unless it involves gaza. It seems clear from Ras Reporting that there will be a Ground Incursion. That changes the game. Its going to change the game in the entire region. We heard raffa say, the two israeli tourists murdered in alexandria. That changes the entire regional calculation. If Israeli Forces going to a full blown Ground Invasion in gaza. I think that were really going to watch we spoke last hour about this, about the possibility of a civilian evacuation. We heard this from Benjamin Netanyahu about Gaza Civilians leave, of course. We know there is nowhere for those 2 Million People to go. One of those options, and only way out of the gaza strips through the Border Crossing with egypt. Is there a role that eta plays on a name and monetary again leveled to get the civilians to safety if it becomes inevitable . This International Pressure will be put on each. Up lets talk about intelligence. A massive intelligence failure, as molly noted, in the last hour. It is surprising that israeli officials didnt see this coming. From all indications, The Americans didnt see it either. Thats right, katie. I am stunned at this because i was just in israel this past summer. Ive been there a couple of times. It is the most technologically surveilled country that you have ever seen. They have Human Intelligence agents who are very much known for their Human Intelligence and their technical intelligence. They are always on a defensive posture, and well positioned. By, the way this is the 50th Anniversary of the yom kippur war. You would think that this is the time that you might be looking for something. I think its a stunning failure for, them sure theres great shock inside of israel. In terms of the Police Station that we saw there, at the beginning of the hour, this was not detected. Places like a Police Station could be surrounded inside israel is just going to be the chatham out to them as a massive failure and their nations history. They are usually well known for being positioned so that the idea that the militants could go across that border k to actually go in and surround, or take some of these communities, that is just unthinkable, i think, even just a few months ago. Veto me Something Like this might happen. As you noticed, above 50 years exactly to the young kapoor war. Just a couple days off. It also comes as israel has been dealing with a lot of internal division, a lot of anger towards the governments, Benjamin Netanyahu with his aligns with those on the far rights. His attempts to overhaul the judicial system. There were concerns that what he was doing was overly focused on the internal politics, and he was letting go of the military readiness that israel had been so known for. There were reservist werent showing up because they were and protest that benjamin attorney who was trying to do. Could part of, that could not be part of why this was messed . S. I think its both internal and external. Internally, israel had gone through a period of intense division, and then in that intense division, if you are watching whats going, on your seen people not show up to military duty, this would primary to potentially strike. The other important thing to think about is that israel had formalized relations with the uae. Lots of negotiations were formalized saudi arabia. For some of these militant group, they see it as running out of time, the shape of the middle east is changing. Its also an opportunity in terms of these forces both inside israel and outside israel. I think that looking forward now, it puts the country, is a ron is a supporter from, hospital other countries as well to make a decision about what theyll do in terms of the shape of the middle east and how theyll come and speak about it. The country, as you noted, is. Egypt egypt is going to be critical and understanding how this might escalate, or deescalates some of the ways that we might think about the intense urban conflict in gaza. If they go this is whats really interesting about this conflict for israel, they are securing space inside their country. They have to go into towns that are part of israel, secure those, and clear militants there before they can really think about any sort of counteroffensives and gaza. So its really complex military operation. As you just noted, as soon as across into gaza as you can expect the northern border becoming a contested area as well. So we could be looking at a long term problem here. Thank you very much. Still a, had what should the u. S. Will be and this conflict . Whats Congress Going to do about it . Youre watching msnbc. G msnbc. Not the other way. Zevo traps use light to attract and trap flying insects with no odor and no mess. They work continuously, so you dont have to. Zevo. Peoplefriendly. Bugdeadly. Just within the last hour, the Israeli Cabinet voted to formally declare war that israel is at war. Lets go to jerusalem where we find sky news correspondent. Alasdair, what does it mean for them to formally declare war . Robert we heard the israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, say that they are at war when he gave a statement to the nation yesterday. That the cabinet has met again today and agreed that the country is at war. I mean, it means a number of things when it comes to the operational capabilities of the Israeli Military. There is a massive call above reservists, people have been traveling back from nepal to join up with a Reservist Units within the Israeli Defense forces. They will now try to establish what their objectives are for the coming days. As well as weeks. It would be focused on the gaza strip, airstrikes have been going on all day. Theyre continuing now against targets within the gaza strip. Infrastructure, buildings, this might be working out of hamas tunnels. It is near the border fence. Weve already seen part of israels response, but they are struggling to get a grip. The security in their own territory, in the south of the country, and i think that we are only see in the beginning of war, what will be israels revenge, retaliation for what has happened. The americans love, Anthony Blinken, is saying that americans may be among the dead. The israelis have not released a number that they can confirm or missing or held hostage. There are over 600 dead. What is going on in terms of finding out where the missing . Or did they have an idea and theyre just not sane . Its hard to know. I wouldnt be surprised if they dont really have an idea. The situation has been so chaotic in the last 24 hours. They were caught completely by surprise. They are trying to establish if people are missing, or they dad, or how theyve been caption and taken back into gaza. I think one of the reasons weve seen that death toll, extraordinary death tolls, 600 israelis dead, one of the reasons weve seen that so dramatically in the last hour or two is because they are suddenly finding areas where, frankly, Massacres Of Taking place. Now they are trying to work out how many people ossoff got. Even if hamas themselves have said that some palestinians, some gazans who are not necessarily affiliated with the breach the fence, into israel, and captured israelis as well. I dont think even hamas are fully aware of how many hostages theyve taken. Anyone who knows israel knows that the sanctity of life, a monkey is really jews, is absolutely paramount to the israeli culture here. Its very different to the arab culture where if your martyr, that is something to celebrate. It is almost the opposite in israel. When you have a hostage situation, and its normally one or two, Something Like the israeli soldier held for five years. It causes a norma saying stomachs the israeli population to have this number, whatever it is, probably in excess of 100, perhaps more than, that being held hostage in gaza. This is simply unprecedented. Anthony blinken is now saying that the hostages we have heard that the leader of the opposition say that he was prepared to make alliance with Benjamin Netanyahu, a former unity government to freedom, his alliance with the farright. Has he had a reaction to that . Not now. My assessment is that its because were only into the second day of this. I think theyre going to prioritize military, strategic, objectives first. So that is getting control of the rest of the south of the country, and working out how theyre going to respond and gaza. I do think that it is possible that as the days play through, some sort of unity government could be considered. I think that benny gantz, who is the major opposition leader, who is leading and the Opinion Polls this year. He has been winning an election and the Opinion Polls, if an electrical tomorrow. He is a former my sense as well as that he would be open to some sort of unity government. I do not think that is off the table. I just dont think that it is the immediate priority for this government. Ill start, thank you very much for joining us. Hamass Unexpected Incursion into israel on saturday has shattered a period of relative calm and stability in the water middle east. The conflict, which is now involved, is raising concerns about the potential for a wider regional crisis. The United Nations Security Council plans itll open doors on the crisis this afternoon, according to their website. Im joining us now is the former spokesperson for the u. S. Mission to the u. N. , former director from lebanon and syria. The former terrorism and intelligence for the treasury department. Its good to see you. What role is lebanon going to play . We have seen this attack threatens, if the idf goes into the gaza strip, they will get more involved. It seems like thats going to happen. What was lebanon play . I would not take that stigma with a grain assault. Lebanon is a wildcard here. You have a government that is feckless, zero concern whatsoever over this. Even though it sounds a bit like a copycat, like us trying to flex its muscles to take advantage of the situation, the fact is that they could cause damage. The issue with that is that it is not that the Israeli Military can face the his bala, its that youre talking about the potential for multiple fronts at the same time when they really need to focus on pushy militants outside of the south, but also this possible Ground Incursion into gaza which is obviously very complicated. Lebanon, its hard to predict. How lebanon will behave. The fact is, it is likely that hezbollah will take advantage of the situation, in the government, even if the government in the majority plead for hezbollah to not pursue any kind of attack, hezbollah doesnt care, they do it anyway. How about egypt . Egypt, well, historically, egypt tries to be more cooperative. Egypt is one of the largest recipients of u. S. Aid. One of the regions that receives this aid from the beginning is because of its relationship it has established israel. While each of sometimes can be the, you, know theyre not perfect in the relationship. There are many times when israelis have found tunnels, for example, built between gaza and egypt as a means for hamas to get funded, and so on. Egypt generally, at the pressure the United States in particular, tries to make egypt a cooperative player. I expects egypt to have, at a certain point, play a role and a humanitarian effort, and trying to cooperate with israel to know arms are going across the border. I will note that egypt was one of the first countries yesterday to call votes, on both sides. At a time when most countries were really saying, hey, israel has a right to defend itself. The reason for that is that egypt just doesnt want any kind of escalation. Its not in their interest, but it is obviously what is the reaction amongst the middle Eastern Countries that are trying to normalize Law Relations with israel to what we have seen from hamas and what is happened, to the kidnap eons, the slaughter weve seen. Israelis gone down a bus stops. There is reporting that there are potentially in areas where there has been mass slaughter, including at that desert ray that was happening by the gaza strip. What is the reaction from them, that they witnessed those sort of images, the International Community condemns them. Right, you know, this has never been, for the frustration the palestinians, the gulf have never been extremely loud in calling for the protection, certainly not over the last ten years. That is why it was a factor in the normalization that have already taken place. The uae for example, terrain. Saudi arabia, and most recently when israel has continued, saudis said that the reason they hadnt finished just because they want to see improvement on the palestinian issue. How the cabinet treats palestinians, and coming to some sort of improvements there. I dont think thats true. I think that that was a sticking point. I dont think, i think that theyve gained, they have too much to gain from that relationship with israel when it comes to Security Cooperation in trade, and acknowledging that the palestinian question is only one light an item. Its not a major sticking point. That is, why by the, way i believe that whats happening now will postpone the talks between saudi and israel, for sure. Its not going to unravel the bigger reason. That while this attack is unprecedented, israels response will certainly be the most dramatic we have seen. Weve also had five attacks, five situations of violence between israel and gaza since 2007. Most notably in the last few years. Its not new as well. So i expect them to hold off, backup, they need to support their palestinian brotherhood, but they have no interest in undermining those talks with israel either. Does this spill over into a third new . Its always possible. This is certainly the most significant we have ever seen the in terms of what these militants have been able to achieve. Also, by the, way this is a tinderbox. We have to remember that if you put this into context, you have on one hand, the violence that has happened sporadically over the last decade or so, and in the last few years, but tensions have been particularly high since netanyahu took office and december. That is because of the number of provocative policies he and his, quote, To Quote President , biden have taken a regards to settlements and so on. We have this tinderbox. When you have no solution, no State Solution, theyre kind of trapped in gaza, they of their internet, and so, on it is really about the Israeli Government. You have a situation where this could blow up. Whether it could be a third intifada, its very possible. No thank you very much. Secretary of state, anthony Secretary Of State antony blinken, and was just on blinken was on with nbc meet the press,s kristen and he said that walker on meet the press. Americans he says that americans may be among those taken hostage in gaza. Nbc News White House correspondent is a capitol hill correspondent. Please tell us more about what Anthony Blinken said. Well katie, the Secretary Of State, as you mentioned, with Christian Walker on meet the press, a few moments ago he said the u. S. Is trying to verify reports that americans are among the dead and also, potentially, among those taken captive in gaza at this point, he did not come from those reports, but hes working overtime to verify that. Another piece of news, katie, secretary just said that he, in addition to the 3. 8 billion dollars and age that the u. S. Typically gets to israel, the israel is now asking for more specific aid, and the secretary said that we should expect to hear more about that later today. He was also asked by christian how these attacks might derail possible, the possible agreement between the u. S. , israel, and saudi arabia. Normalizing relations between israel and saudi arabia, he was asked about that, and he said that it was entirely possible that that could have been one of the motives behind this attack. The Breaking News or trying to verify reports that americans might be among those killed and taken captive in gaza. How concerned is the white house about this breaking out to a regional conflict . Lebanon is potentially getting involved. That is something that the white house has been looking at. The secretary also stressed that in his interview this morning, and we heard that yesterday from the president , katie, choosing to make, to give that warning, warning anyone who might be looking at this, and the enemies of israel, they might be trying to take advantage of this. The president was very direct yesterday. The Secretary Of State was direct this morning. Certainly increasing concerns after we heard the Breaking News overnight of that shell in from the golden heights. Im julie, lets talk about congress. Kim jeffers was on another network, the leader of the democrats in the house, saying that the additional u. S. Support will go to israel and the idea. Can you tell us about that . Yeah, look, anything that Congress Wants to do in the form of additional funds, and Additional Support militarily, or strategically, has to be approved by both chambers. You heard gabe talking about more information to come from secretary blinken today, and the administrations request for this additional eight, but this builtin is empty. The senate is out next week with no plans to return. Majority leader schumer is on a visit to china. At the house, of, course without a speaker. So this is putting a lot of pressure on the fact that republicans right now, do you to their politics, they have now stood a house speaker. This is untested, it is never been done before. The house rules dont exactly cover what comes next. According to my conversations with experts on this issue, those report over all the rules in the book, they have told me that accent chalet, mchenry, the Acting Speaker is powerless unless the house decides to vote and give him those powers. That means that even a resolution condemning the hamas attack, even a Moment Of Silence on the floor, could be something that is not within mchenrys power, let alone any congressional legislation to aid israel and their response here. Kate, what about the future . A two State Solution . Is that on the table . Are The Americans even trying to approach what they can do to calm things down, not just for the moment, but for the future . Well, look right now the national Security Council has been reaching out to partners in the middle east, trying to gather as much intelligence at this point. The secretary also said that the u. S. s main focus is to make sure that israel gets what it needs. Certainly that is a big question that will come up in the coming days and weeks, but right now, there are so many Unanswered Questions about this attack. Frankly, trying to verify those reports, potentially americans are among those dead. And held captive. They are many broader questions that might come about in the future about what this means for two State Solution. All those discussions seem very far off at this point. Again, as the president said yesterday, trying to contain this fallout and make sure it doesnt spiral into a broader conflict across the middle east, katie. What about iran . The world that irans plane . The u. S. , would do u. S. Officials believe iran had to do with, us if anything . Well secretary blinken, at this, point he is, he did say that it is no surprise that hezbollah, hamas, and iran would be together, potentially on such a on this issue. That their motivations may be linked. In terms of politically, President Biden is facing increasing pressure from his gop rivals about whether iran had anything to do with this, at this point the administration is saying that the Six Billion Dollars in unfrozen funds several weeks ago, in exchange for those americans that were the ministration is saying that there is no evidence that any of that money was used to fund this attack. In fact, the administration is stressing that iran hasnt even seen any of that money at. Theyre calling for a suggestion, saying that some of that money may have been used to fund this attack. Calling it disinformation. Oh response at this point. The administration has said that iran is not getting cash, theyre getting goods and services. They say that we need acts and that is delivered. They are not giving any cash from that Six Billion Dollars that was on frozen. Julie tsirkin, thank you very much. The jewish communities across the United States are reeling from the attack on israel. Why it feels so personal for them. Coming up next. Coming up next this is american infrastructure, a prime target for cyberattacks. But the same aipowered security that protects all of google also defends these services for everyone who lives here. Flakes are flying at half staff in miami beach out of respect for the attacks in israel in those lost. Miami beach police ramped up presence at synagogues to ensure the community feel safe given the unrest. Despite being 6600 miles away, residents and miami are saying that they feel it, personally. Whats happening in israel. Joining me live from miami beach, nbc news correspondent, melissa perez. Melissa, what are you hearing . Hey, katie. I can speak to how people are feeling as well as what were seeing on the ground. Here were seeing flags at half staff around miami day county. Were seeing buildings lit and blue and white. Miami city hall, the port of miami. Its not just, here were seeing the Empire State Building last night, as well as the one world trade center. This by order of lawmakers here, both local and national. Were seeing them show in solidarity for israel, which the United States has recognized as a key ally. When we talk about how people are feeling, a major field that comes a time time again is the fear within the community. We know the department of Homeland Security is keeping an eye on potential threats to Jewish Centers around the country. So far there have been no credible reports of any. We know there is ramped up Police Presence outside of jewish synagogues, temples, and centers. Key places like new york, los angeles, as well as here in miami. These are the three cities that have the highest population of Jewish Americans and the United States. We have seen that here on the ground in miami, weve seen this outside of the memorial where we are right now. This increase in Police Presence both yesterday and today. I also had a chance to speak to somebody who works at a temple here in miami beach, talking about how police had gone to his front door and said that they were going to be increasing surveillance, and now that brought him peace of mind. When we talk about the anxiety, theres another level to it as well. The anxiety of watching this unfold from afar. We heard from the president of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation who spoke to that anxiety, wondering what is happening to lebanon, because this is really a tightknit community. Take a listen for yourself. There is an enormous anxiety about what this means for the nation, to be at war. The very fact that there are reported to be 50 hostages that hamas is taken means that there are almost no one in israel who doesnt know somebody who knows somebody who either was killed, or severely injured, or taken hostage. Israel is a very small country. It is a very deeply politically engaged country. Everyone knows everybody else. This is very personal for them, as well. Now when it comes to reactions to other things that ive seen here, some calls for an aggressive response, not just for, israel but aggressive support from the United States. This is something that i have seen from local members of the Jewish Community as well as some lawmakers within the Jewish Community asking for that United States support, and for that to remain continued. As we, now my colleagues been talking about palestinian reaction. There is massive loss of life here on both sides. Whether youre israeli, jewish, palestinian, this is something, this is not just an event happening on the other side of the world, katie. This is something that even if some member of that community has never been to the motherland, whatever that might be, this is overwhelmingly sad and deeply personal. The im of attack, an incursion into israel, caught the Israeli Government offguard, and triggered real concern about the countrys intelligence capabilities. Palestinian authorities report more than 300 dead while local media in israel reports at least 600 israelis dead. And potentially more than 100 taken hostage, making this by far the worst violence in years. It comes at a time of considerable political strife within israel, marked by a deeply divided israeli public that is protesting a series of judicial reforms introduced by this farright government. With me for more on this is the director of the center for Middle East Policy at the brookings institution. Thank you very much. Weve talked about this a little bit but its worth going into it deeper. Benjamin netanyahu has faced intense backlash from a broad section of the israeli public for his alliance with the farright, and this attempt to do judicial reforms that could potentially erode Political Freedom and womens freedom in israel. How much of that and the strife and the reservist protesting and not reporting for duty led to this intelligence break . Its very hard to tell of course. What is early in this event, and i suspect well be researching this and debating this for many years to come. I dont think the immediate failure and this was a colossal failure of intelligence, but also preparedness of forces on the ground, even after the initial surprise, i dont think this is attributable directly to the domestic unrest in israel, or even to the governments decision on judicial reform. But what we clearly see is a breakdown in government capabilities on a small scale, its still very functioning, but on a small scale, extremely catastrophic scale, the ability to simply couldnt tucked Conduct Business as one would, instead of focusing on completely different things. Passing this overhaul of the judiciary which would have dramatically eroded the democracy in israel. And that has an enormous intention. They have also been very focused keenly on the west bank, both because a very strong settler supporters in the cabinet itself, but also because the intelligence that thought that thats where the main threat is rather than the west bank. As a result, it seems, there to say, i say this with caution, it seems that there was forces diverted to the west bank to keep peace there instead. And instead, they left the gaza strip border, which this kind of attack, not only the attack, but the aftermath, the lack of forces to fight back, to stop the abduction, the rampage, the carnage, and they were vic images that occurred in over 20 israeli villages and towns. This is the first time in 75 years that an israeli town was conquered by a foreign force. It is simply remarkable. This is a historic failure. And the military Intelligence Forces bear some of the blame. The government, and we will find out how, theres enormous blame as well. We still have gotten word that some of those towns are still not yet back under israeli control. How does this get resolved, given what we have seen . Weve seen massacres and stops, and we are hearing about potentially a massacre at the desert grave, 600 people dead at least in this well according to local media reports, potentially more than 100 captured. How does this get resolved . It is gonna be a very long and very bloody all, for two reasons. For us, we should remember the atmosphere here in the United States after 9 11, there was a sense that we are in it for the long haul, long fight, and we are willing to pay a price that we are not willing to pay just two days prior. In some sense, that is where israel is now. Its willing to pay a price that was not willing to days ago. And it will go to Great Lengths to find everyone involved in this. And given the images, given the massacre of young children, the elderly, and the abduction of everyone, likely horrific things happening to some of the abductees, were gonna see this for the long haul. Being in gaza in the last 20 years has been a miserable failure, the situation is terrible. I think its gonna be far worse of course. But id say more, the fact that there are so many dozens of abductees, not only military, but civilians, including families and very young children, very difficult and long process. Its gonna be a very difficult conundrum for the Israeli Administration to figure out where to strike, how to strike, how to pursue those who did this without risking the Human Shields that they are holding out to protect themselves as they want to do . Its gonna be that would also entail diplomacy, of course. Trying to free them at some point. The question is the price, this kind of number of abductees and p. O. W. s could entail hamas demanding all hamas terrorist free from israeli prisons. Thats gonna be very hard thing to do. I think its gonna be very long, very bloody, standoff could last for many months if not more than that. What is the International Community doing . Whats the responsibility of the world here . The very first thing, and we saw President Biden address this in his remarks, the very first thing is to prevent a traumatic scoping up of this conflict. In particular, the Lebanese Hezbollah does not join. In 2006, when hamas infiltrated israel and abducted, captured a soldier, one soldier, it was in the gaza strip. And less than three weeks later, we saw the Lebanese Hezbollah, excuse me, the Lebanese Hezbollah join in the fight. Thats a possibility now. There have not decided yet. They are tempted. The head of hezbollah has been testing the borders, testing the envelope for israel for months now. And he and iran certainly would have an interest in escalating this. If that happens, the damage is not only to northern and Central Israel would be dramatic, but the damage in lebanon would be unfathomable. This could be far worse than what happened in 2006, and that was already terrible. So, the first element, the first duty, i think, of the International Community, as President Biden has recognized very well, its to prevent the escalation in the north, and to stop hezbollah, to deter hezbollah, to make sure that it understands what the israeli response might look like, and it would be very, very severe. The second is, as always, to try and find roots to hamas to figure out where they could speak to them in a sense, to try and push the contours around this conflict. It may take time. There will be a very dramatic israeli operation. I would be surprised if it does not include Land Incursions at some point, if the israelis decide to do so at what point. It might go through the egyptians, perhaps, and others who have contact with hamas. The u. S. Has very little contact with hamas. Its gonna be a very big thing. Hamas of course is in for this, and when they started this, the leaders of hamas, what on the ground, of course, theyre not fighting, theyre not in the open. Theyre hiding underground. So, they will try to get in touch with them. Israel will find out where they are. But also it will be hard to bring israel down trying to exact the price from this leadership. So, again, i wish i had better news. I think this is gonna be a very long and bloody hamas haul. Natan sachs, thank you very much. Not great news, but, you know, its whats happening.
