what are you expecting? >> i might not go that way. i've been there many times at the rafah border crossing. it's not a big opening, this is small amount of people and traffic that can go through there. it's just a few hundred foreign nationals leaving and some aides coming in, yes it could work. but hundreds of thousands of gazans have come from the northern part of the territory to the southern part. so if they make any attempt to go to the border, i want to try to get out, that cradle kinds of chaos. you don't want to forget things that may or may not happen here. it's not a border crossing that could handle a lot of traffic. it would probably be critical to that could stay open in a very organized fashion because not only is that the people getting out but it could be the main corridor for aid that gets into gaza. >> steve, it when it comes to the white house saying they're considering the invitation, how likely is that they will accept and what might a visit to his romine this moment? >> it would be rather extraordinary for the president to commit what is essentially an active war zone. and it would be certainly within keeping with -- >> i'm so sorry. i'm having a tough time here, and you sleep, and we'll see if we can fix radio. in the meantime, i'm gonna ask you another question. secretary of state blinken has continued his efforts in the middle east to contain the conflict and prevent it from engulfing the wider region. the u.s. has confirmed that in recent days they were trying also bout interfering. what are the risk of escalation here? >> it is clearly on israel's northern border in southern lebanon and they have touched on the couple wars with israel. 1996, 2000 and. six they have huge arsenal of rockets. much more extensive in powerful than hamas. we saw what hamas's been able to do. shot about 6000 rockets into israel over the past week. the hezbollah arsenal is much larger than that. i think that the most immediate threat will be the northern border and if hezbollah enters in a major way. or on this is the patron for both hezbollah and hamas. i am sure there is some sort of coronation going on there. so far we have seen these very limited shootings back and forth over the border. two u.s. aircraft carriers in the region are there to send very strong messages. i won right message. deterrence, don't get involved. >> what are you looking for and what are you expecting over the next few days? we know nobody has a crystal ball. it appears the ground invasion is. eminent nobody knows exactly what. what are you watching for? >> a couple of things. certainly they scale in the scope of israel going in on the ground. i've done this many times before but they are targeting a somewhat limited. they're going after the hamas militants. this time they say they wanted to destroy hamas entirely. that would include the political leaders of hamas. that would be a big sign to see if they are able to do that. if they are able to do that, then the question becomes, who's going to be in control of gaza when this is over? if hamas is no longer running, it which israel tolerated in recent years, are israel is going to stay there in occupied the place long term with troops in gaza? israel is showing no appetite for that right now. they've got that in 2005. had not come back to stay for the length of time. there is no real alternative. if hamas is not running it in the israelis don't want to run it that egypt is not interested and you've got the palestinian authority in the west bank that have maintained that the basing this israeli puppets. no other governments want this. i don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves, but after the military operation is going to have to be some sort of political arrangement. it's not clear who would be left in charge of gaza if the hamas political leaders are taken out in this israeli operation. >> this is a segue to steven's new piece out, titled the hamas attack changed everything. you write that what pundits and experts were worried about a week ago, the prospect of saudi israeli normalization, now suddenly seems irrelevant. you talk about the possibility, what does this look. like israeli reoccupation of gaza. can you elaborate on that? >> as greg was saying, it is abundantly clear that the israelis are going to go into -- without any significant plan on how to get out, or what political arrangements might be thereafter. so i might see a period in which israelis are occupying the gaza strip or parts of the gaza strip for some periods of time. this is a trap for the israelis. and we can't discount the fact that this is part of hamas's plan here. is to bring the israelis into the gaza strip, engage in a grinding conflict that would undermine israeli security, the israeli colony and keep the israelis pins down there for a significant period of time. >> steven, before we let both of you go we touched that antony blinken's trip. how do you view the diplomacy thus far and how the administration has been handling this? >> i have been monitoring it as much as we can. much of it has to be secret and confidential. it has to be done carefully. obviously, they are being held in the area where the terrorists are. the terrace have them. it's very delicate. it's very dangerous for them. it is something that i'm not going to be privy to. it's something that the most elite and covert groups will be working on and. i know they are. i just wish that some of this momentum for bombing gaza could slow down so we can have time to have these innocence out. that is my concern. get a lot of the folks who are so's innocent out of that danger. >> i wanted to ask you about it. how concerned are you given these dual goals here? israel has said it wants to wipe out hamas. they want to get these citizens and rescue people who are held hostage. do you worry that tools could be at odds with one another. >> i, do i do. what i am hoping is that part of the team is working every bit as quickly on plans to naturally i negotiate in some way with this terror group so we can figure out a way to get them out. we have to get them out. yeah, that's what i'm concerned about. i know they know that. that's where my heart is. i am concerned about all the innocence involved in the conflict. there's no winning one so many in that sits at risk. >> what is your message for the families who are waiting on any word of how their loved one might be doing? >> i think we support the efforts. the fact that senator schumer is there with a group of senators is important. we affirmed our support for israel in this difficult moment for israel and for the region. he is hearing directly from the leadership there. we expect a package from the senate in the house. the house is going to need a package in aid. it could be a variety of things. the white house will send us direct requests as it relates to the entire funding level. we are ready to get to work. the unfortunate part is the house is paralyzed. until the house majority and the republicans elect a speaker, there's very little we can do. it is frustrating at this time of incredible need for israel and the region, not just israel, other issues like ukraine, the house republicans cannot get their act together. we need them to select a speaker. we need to move forward. >> knowing the civilian toll that could be at stake, what a do you support?
