I think it was brilliant to start it right there, in his backyard, to make the point that he is the one, exhibit a, claire is a prosecutor, she gets this, he is the one that said he wanted to overturn it and put judges on. I think the bigger point that claire was also making is that one out of three women now, when you look at what is going on here, live in states that have these extreme bans, in florida it is six weeks, a lot of women dont know they are pregnant by six weeks and trump said on thursday, six weeks is too early. He had an opportunity that two republican seized, Susan Collins and Lisa Mckowski to make it clear they stood with ivf and protect it and what was happening in alabama. He voted the other way. And the fact that this has continued and you can go back in time and see other statements he has made. But i just look at that vote. I know what that vote meant. And, unfortunately there are way too many people that are in that place where they see that negativity and they say, yeah, he gets me. But, i will tell you, the majority of this country wants to believe that tomorrow will be better. And once someone who has a more joyous, positive outlook on everything that makes our country just extraordinary. I do think he not only has losing musicians on his campaign which there are only a couple and i think it is a stretch to call some of them musicians he has a message, i think, that will not move the voters that decide president ial elections. Those voters that amy knows well in minnesota and certainly the only way i could get elected in missouri, that is those voters that dont vote by party, more independent, make up their mind based on their lives at that moment and the candidates that represent them. You have the republicans that spoke at the convention in chicago, democratic convention, former trump employees, what you are seeing right now, jimmy mccain today, John Mccains youngest son who served in the military. Republicans and independents coming out. That is why you are seeing a surge in the Swing States. Do you think that this is, this election will be divided along Gender Lines . You look at the Polling And Trump is doing so badly among women. Look at what is happening on the central issue of Bodily Atonomy, effects women and men have a stake in this. Do you see a massive Gender Divide . Always has been some divide. I am not sure that is what is determining it. I am looking at what claire had just talked about. These independent voters and moderate republicans and where they are and dont want to go back to the dark days. They dont want to go back to the insurrection, they dont want to go back to the assaults on our democracy and our freedom. You see a lot of democrats reaching out right now to republicans and independents who are not comfortable and never want to be associated with trump. We will talk about that in the next block. Many of them have done it twice. And i think it is important for people to understand these voters, there are a lot of people that held their nose and voted for trump, for whatever reason, not wild about him, January 6th was the thing that pushed them over the edge. And the fact that the Republican Party decided that they are going to go, again, with Donald Trump. There is just a lot of the voters that is a, this is too much. Then, once you gave them Somebody Sort of new, like Kamala Harris, they basically were like, you know what, im in, i am in for the optimism, done with the Doom And Gloom and ready to come out and be advocates, those people can create the best kind of Permission Structure for other people who are on the fence who are kind of looking for a reason to vote against Donald Trump. They are not that comfortable voting for democrats but when they see people from their own tribe, the people that made the same decisions say i can do it with harris, i can vote for her. That is the kind of thing that helps people sort of make that move. Can we talk about the strategy behind the campaign itself. I know you are going up with these billboards at least in major metro areas and key Swing States, pittsburgh, harrisburg, philadelphia, pennsylvania, Grand Rapids in detroit. Madison, milwaukee, wisconsin, Phoenix And Omaha for the second congressional district and my lord do we hope it does not come down to that vote. You said these are folks that do not feel like part of the democratic tribe. When i think about those places i think of them as democratic strong holds. Are they hanging out in blue areas of the Swing States . No, this is a great question. Actually. So, in most of these, these are the what are called dmas. These are the places where you advertise and that is what how do i explain this, yes, the name of the cities but where we are concentrated in our advertising is really in the suburban areas that ring those cities. That is where these persuadable voters are talking bucks county, to reach them you have to go into the dma, the biggest city in the area. So our focus is not to hit those blue voters that are concentrated in the metro areas but really in the rings around there. We are doing a surround sound campaign. Not only are we up on television but we are very, very narrowly targeted with digital, with something called ctv, it is on your hulu and other places where you stream. We are on radio. We are trying to hit people with a lot of different voices but all of whom are sort of, a lot of the collegeeducated suburban voters who were the persuadable voters that made up the margins in the last key elections. I got to ask because, Chris Hayes was talking about this and rightly so in the last hour and i have been thinking about it a lot. Pennsylvania. It seems like this is the, as it was in 2020, pennsylvania has 19 electrical college electoral votes, how much work needs to be done in that state for democrats. You are going up with these billboards in three cities in pennsylvania. Reporter yeah, pennsylvania is the tipping point state. You know, i was, i was originally a big advocate for choosing Governor Shapiro as the Vp Candidate because i thought in such a way it was to lock it up. I dont Think Walz was a bad Choice But Nothing more important than pennsylvania. You can see in terms of Trump Spending and Harris Spending that is what everyone is battling over. It is a state that has a lot of these urban areas that then do have suburban rings around them. A lot of the rings are the kinds of places that moved from red to blue over the last decade that trump has been on the seam. That is where the voters are moving. Political realigning out of the Republican Party and are becoming more willing to vote for democrats. These are people where previously they would vote for John Mccain and mitt romney. Trump has been pushing them out of the party. But it also has a lot of rural areas which is where i grow up in Central Pennsylvania where trump dominates with voters. This is why it is so important. I think you got to get Tim Walz to the rural areas, you have to have him talking directly with voters. Pennsylvania is the ball game. We will spend a ton of money there but so is everybody else. Can you talk about what the mood is inside the doj right now . So, the focus of the book is the average Career Prosecutors that work at the doj and agents that work at the fbi and moral is low. They feel like they are stuck in the middle. They feel like the Justice Department and fbi are being asked to resolve the political differences. We were talking before, an assumption among liberal critics of trump if he was indicted and brought to trial he would be convicted and discredited politically and that would be The End of it. It turns out that the legal system is not the easiest way to resolve the political differences. You are a lawyer by design. Yes. A former president , it turns out, can delay and it is difficult and we can talk more about it, you have a recent Supreme Court decision, it is complicated on immunity. So, i would say if there is a second Trump Term there probably will be less civil servants that fight it. Many did, many heroic stories in the book. I think he will be embolden on how he uses the departments. What is interesting about the extraordinary, extraordinarily slow pace is that maybe it is not a surprise. I think people were primed to believe it could happen. Especially after the jan 6th Committee showed the american public all of this evidence. It has not happened quickly, right . Not just the Supreme Court. A delay at the department of justice in bringing the charges, do you think that Merrick Garland understood it would take a long time . I think he did. It is part of the two realities that we live in now. There is sort of a Trump Support Universe and then there is a Trump Opponent Sort of democrat universe. Garland believes in the Justice Department, in the last 50 years there has been a pride and it being independent. That an Attorney General carries out the Brood Policies of a democratically elected president , when it comes to individual cases the president stays out of it. Trump defied that, defiled that, and paid little political cost. What was interesting is that it helped him in the primaries as you just talked about. A view that this was somehow charging him, it would be a political silver bullet. And it wasnt. And, it. It hasnt. And do you think there is any regret on the party of the ag about the Time Line upon which this unfolded. If you can not speak to that, what nowed in of the doj . You mentioned moral is low, you also mentioned that there seem to be camps, protrump and anti trump which is not something we think of with the Justice Department. Another camp of doj officials and more senior officials like we have to do this. He has had all of these chances. It got to the point where one part of the group is looking at the other groups political donations. Hyperpartisanship. Extends inside it is seeping inside Law Enforcement investigations. I just want to emphasize, i did not find anyone who was wildly prorepublican or prodemocrat, they take their duty seriously. They try to be nonpartisan. I found like for our democracy to function we need nonpartisan. Counting elections fairly and judges and police and journalists that are nonpartisan and presenting facts. Joining me now is dana bash, cnns chief political Correspondent And Coauthor of the new book americas deadliest election, the Cautionary Tale of the most violent election in american history. It is so lovely to have you. Thank you for joining me. Congratulations on the book. We all heard the title, we were like americas deadliest election . It is not about January 6th, 2020. It is about 1872 and 1876. For people not familiar with this extra ordinary moment in american history, can you talk a little about what the crosscurrents were in 1872 . It was reconstruction. And, the country was trying to figure out how to come together. In the south, what it meant was you had many, many new voters, freed men. The election before hand in 1870, carpetbaggers came down, particularly one who is in the book who became governor, henry warmest, and he realized there was a lot of opportunity with these new voters. He said all the right things and, at the time, he probably meant to them or they thought he did. He won, He Won huge with all these new votes. The next election, the segregationists in the south, the racists, southern democrats said okay, we cant let this happen again because our way of life is bad enough without slaves, its going to get even worse. So, they begin to realize The Way to stop their way of life from changing is to disenfranchise those voters at the Ballot Box and they did it with intimidation, they did it with fear, they did it with violence, they did it with murder. The result was a completely corrupted election and there were two governor candidates, neither of whom would concede. Both of whom were then inaugurated by their own people. The same goes for the legislatures, two slates of legislatures, judges and so forth. There was complete chaos. The violence was so bad there was a horrible, horrific massacre. I didnt learn about this in school, did you . It is a massacre in every sense. 150, at least 150 black men were killed in cold blood. In an effort to find justice for them, the federal government stepped in to try the perpetrators, the murderers on civil rights charges. It backfired because it went to the Supreme Court and what the Supreme Court said in a now famous statement, the federal government has no right in civil rights on the State Level and we got Jim Crow for 100 years. Then we get Jim Crow. First of all, by The Way, the 1876 president ial election is subsequently affected by all the chicanery that unfolds in louisiana. That is for later on in the book. What is staggering about the moment is it is this hinge point. The country is supposed to be going down the road of reconstruction and creating more equitable democracy. And, precisely the opposite happens. When you are writing this book with david fisher, were you thinking about this moment today, as the Supreme Court is intervening, as we are questioning what it means to be an american, who gets to participate in the process, who doesnt . What parallels did you see between then and now . So many parallels. The fundamental parallel is what happened when people dont trust our Electoral System. Back then people didnt trust the Electoral System because they shouldnt, because it was corrupted and it was, they were disenfranchising people who should have been allowed to vote. And, there was a real crosscurrents. Now, it is people dont trust the Electoral System because half of the country is told that they shouldnt trust the Electoral System, not because we have seen evidence to prove and that made its way through the courts, i dont have to tell you or your viewers, in 2020. It is a lesson of what we need to understand about the importance of these systems to being strong. I dont know that we learned the lesson. I hope we learn the lesson from the last time around but subsequently, we have seen new laws in place in states still control the Electoral System that im not sure that they are going to make it easier for people to vote. I think right now, it doesnt look so good in terms of in franchising the voters who need to be heard, probably, more than most given the history. I think this is sort of like really
