Certainly worth the hike. Good evening once again i am Stephanie Ruhle when we are now just 60 days away from the election and only four until the debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. This week both candidates were focused on the top issue for voters, the economy. Harris also picked up a major endorsement from a republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney and today, her father, former Vp Cheney said he is going to vote for harris, as well. Just take a moment. Cheney, remember cheney . He is voting for Kamala Harris. With that, lets bring in our nightcap because it is Friday Night. Thank you guys. Lets talk about this election and rev, im turning to you first. You are the one of the first people she called when she made it official. Here we are with two months to go. I think it is still very close, but i think cheney is a Game Changer in the sense that he will give comfort to a lot of older moderate republicans that she is not this crazed socialist that Donald Trump is trying to make her out to be. No one in that group, and thats a large group of republicans, believes that cheney would be supporting a socialist. I think this was a huge Game Changer today for Kamala Harris. Pablo, we heard this week i dont even want to say economic proposals from both candidates because we did but Kamala Harris came up with a proposal for small businesses, making it easier to launch a small business. Less regulation, a huge positive, a tax break. Donald trump gave a presentation on economic policy at the New York economic club and there was no presentation. He was incoherent and did not actually offer anything. Had he said i dont think the federal government should be involved in childcare, that would be an answer. He did not even do that yet he still has a lot of support from some people in the business community. He is not a serious person, and it is disheartening that maybe it takes cheney to remind us that like if you care about an institution as a concept, whether an economic one or the country itself, you want someone who knows what theyre doing and even in a vague sense, so the Business Part of this, as we have talked about this for months now, people are motivated by selfinterest and in this case, they still see trump as somebody who was scalable, who was corruptible in the most literal sense, and that is the advantage that he offers. To me, the thing with what business is your incentive suggests is that you are playing some sort of game that other people can benefit from and he just does not have your ability he does not have the ability to articulate that. He is an aging athlete. I come from sports. Ive seen it happen. Donald trump does not have it anymore and hes rambling and people are looking at him like, is this entertaining . Well, kind of. But its not substance. With the exception of golf, the only time ive ever seen him play anything there is video of him from the 80s on the Beach Volleyball Court which i do not recommend you google. What is your thought . I have some good news here. I think this has turned into a little bit of a Policy Discussion around the elections rather than the discussion about Donald Trump dropping bombs, saying things weve never heard before. Weve kind of been there, done that. I think hate is passi at this point. Were kind of done with that and maybe we shouldnt be but and the bidding was as follows as i get it. Republicans said Harris Hasnt talked to the press. Hey, lets spend a moment on that because they suddenly realize that press is a vital part of our democracy. [ inaudible ] she comes forward, provided some details. All of a sudden now its kind of ricocheted back on the republicans that trump has to provide details so we are debating some things out there about policies that we were not debating before because we were so involved either in the Horserace Or Something like that. I think this is not a bad place to be so i can take Donald Trumps Tariff Proposal and put it into The Machine and come up with the fact that he is proposing essentially one of the biggest tax increases weve ever seen. Im going to have you say this again because it is not a tax cut. Walk us through when you put the tariffs you put the tariff 10 overall, take out the part that is for china which is 60 tariffs, it would be the biggest Tax Hike in history and the most regressive. He kept saying that these are not taxes, but they are taxes. It just raises the price of new goods. Its not necessarily inflationary in the initial aspect but what happens is you get the spiral because i put a tariff on your goods, you put a tariff on my good and then were off to the races. Yes, remember what happened when trump was president on the Terraces China and up crushing our farmers and we ended up having to give them a huge amount of aid. I need to spend a second Here And Express [ inaudible ] with the biden administration for continuing those tariffs. Trump is in another league with what hes talking about. Kamala harris is under a huge amount of pressure to provide details. She has had less than two months to do it. With the exception of tariffs, Donald Trump has been running for over two years and we dont have details on anything. Why does that double standard set . I think thats an excellent question, stephanie. The one thing i have been hearing from voters is this Frustration And Exhaustion with the backandforth, but i will say they are asking, and have been really calling on harris to be explicit and some of her speeches. You hear protesters and she is addressing them in different ways depending on you know, the events of that day but i really think what theyre asking her to do is tell them whats going to be different between her time in office the biden presidency, so those are some of the answers that i think young voters especially that we are hearing from stateowned are asking and waiting to hear. Heres the thing. People are complaining, saying why dont we know her policy, shes been in office for three and half years but shes been the vp. If you are the ceo of a company and i was your number two it would be my job to execute your vision but it would not be my vision, so shouldnt we be giving her some more time to formulate exactly what her plan is going to be . Absolutely and i think that is bogus because when you see she has already come with a different capital Gains Tax Proposal them President Biden which by the way, is more moderate and more probusiness despite what republicans would have you think. Much more moderate, much more probusiness and it is a big difference than President Bidens, so you are talking about her, who is talking about capital gains, Child Tax credits and youre talking about Donald Trump who could not even answer a question at the economic club about childcare. He said Childcare Is childcare and he went off. If Joe Biden had made the speech that Donald Trump made, we would be asking for the 25th Amendment to get them out of office. The man is unhinged. I agree with pablo. It is an old song that doesnt work anymore but it is that his head is not right. There is something unhinged about him and i think Cheneys Endorsement will blow him totally out of the water. We are grading on a curve. Done. We are the media. We have created a double standard and how we are covering them when it is our job to set the standard. Why are we doing it . Is it because we keep getting bullied that we are the liberal media . It does not make you liberal to callout a liar. It makes you a fact checker. I will be blunt with you about it. I think Donald Trumps chosen terrain and that he likes to fight on this culture war. That is not a thing you need to be well versed and when it comes to policy, when it comes to tariffs, child care legislation. He is a guy who is a vibes based so he is somebody that is advocating the idea that policy is at the point when it comes to campaigns and when it comes to who we need to be the guard rails when it comes to democracy okay, the cheney family. But what about Mike Pence . Mike pence comes out and says i Cant Vote for the guy. Just give me the counterargument, anybody in america, as to why Mike Pence is not a voice we should be looking at and horrified by. This was his literal Vice President so without delivering January 6 again, why is Mike Pence not the person that everybody says when it comes to the first sentence we hear about Donald Trump, that to me is just the biggest lines but we have collectively about who is the canary in the Coal Mine . It is the guy with the effigies that were being Lit Aflame at the capitol building. Does the Team Cheney Endorsement put pressure on the likes of george w. Bush . I think it should and i think a lot of people will be asking that question, but let me go back to the point that he made, and that is that when you have a cheney who i have marched on probably more than anybody, you have cheney endorsing the Culture Wars just took a real shot in the head for Donald Trump because No One believes that cheney would be on the side of as, but reverent, they have been so effective it just canceling out anybody who opposes them that no matter what status they previously had, they become either a rhino or whatever it is they call him. Theyre going to run out of that. You cant just name call all the way through and im not saying that cheney, i would go hunting with him but when you deal with the fact that all of these guys, you cannot just ive been fishing and some of the places hes been fishing when he was at his undisclosed locations but i hear confessions if you want. Youre saying theres a mccarthy moment where they go to like this point of at long last senator, you have no decency. Im sorry to butcher the quote there but you get to a point where you cannot accuse the army anymore of being communist. And you look the fact that look at him on the road. Trump is not drawing the crowds he used to draw. The passion is not there anymore and he is embarrassing people every time he comes out, which is why he is not come out often. Talking about Kamala Harris ought to be doing interviews, he ought to be doing more rallies. The guy was home labor day weekend, the kickoff of the serious part of the campaign. He made no appearances. Nobody notices that . You know this. Yesterday when he spoke at the New York economic club, that was not the low information voter venue, okay . That is all Wall Street Investment professionals in that audience and the fact that they sat through that and said nothing or clapped is humiliating. Should be humiliating to each and every one of them. If i can get a list of the attendees i would be standing at the door today. Right now, i want to know how we are letting one of the most successful Wall Street guys who is so proud to say he is endorsing Donald Trump, he is now part of his investment team, how is he answering for what trump said yesterday . How is John Paulson answering for it . For those guys it is humiliating every time trump opens his mouth. They just have to hide and go i just want to make sure im getting corporate tax cuts extended but its shameful that the guy answers the Childcare Question with Childcare IsChildcare Marco Rubio if anke. There wasnt even a verb in his sentence. Eye and defend Donald Trump. What i could defend is the notion that there are concerns on that side there about the issue of how far do they go in terms of taxing business, about how far they go in terms of regulatory structure against business. They have not been in favor. They have worked against a lot of the mergers and acquisitions out there. They hate Lena Kohn. There is a long list of reasons why you would not support Kamala Harris on a Policy Basis but you are positing something else. Of the four people who are running right now, Jd Vance, Kamala Harris, Donald Trump and Tim Walz of the four do you know whos the biggest fan of Lena Kohn . Jd vance. Im speechless. What i will say is this. When it comes to policy, the republicans have always been deficient in their bench. They dont have reverent, you shouldve been in economics reported during the perennial Infrastructure Week of the truck presidency. You get your notebook out, youre ready to go, nothing. Every week was the same. There is no policy there. Interesting from the Harris Point of view, democrats do policy like they make pizza in some places here in New York. They just make it one after another. Theyre very good at the policy but trump, republicans very good at selling. He is Up There saying working to make america great. To do they are very good at that and he is very good at that but i always thought if i had a policy i would want the democrats to write it in the republicans to sell it. Here is the thing. This notion that Kamala Harris is so progressive, when you actually look at our policies, the current policies are not. When she was running for president in 2020 her policies were more progressive. She was leaning to the left. She has moved to the center but what is extraordinary, when republicans are Wall Street or select a claim theyre not republican but they are, what they are saying she is so progressive, they are not. What she is is black and she is a black woman and i want to paint a picture because she is a black woman, what could that mean . I guess shes all about lots of social programs and she may be but the picture they are painting of her is not rooted in fact when you look at the policies and that is what is stunning to see, highly educated people in Finance Brushing right past that and going oh, so progressive. I think the issue for young people, too, as they are not feeling any of these policy. The watch the spaces they hear these wonderful words but they are still deciding on whether they can make a payment on their Student Loan or make a purchase at the Grocery Store so its been really complicated what ive been hearing from Gen Z is that basically until the changes are felt, it doesnt really feel like much is going to change when you cant see that change in your daily life. Sure, these nice words, these Policy Sound great but the challenge that americans are facing right now we had a poll come out this week. 31 of voters under 30 ranked Inflation And Cost of living is the number one issue followed by that was 11 who said threats to democracy was a top issue for them. Abortion, healthcare, crime and safety, the Israel Hamas War came after that. These are the issues young voters are waiting for Harris And Trump to take strong, unwavering stances on and weve heard some moderate stances from harris which i think confuses the ultra liberal left leaning Gen Z voters because they were like wait a minute, fracking . I didnt think that was really what the Climate Movement was about and she recently has been talking about different topics that seem to be swaying a little bit. But, if you look at those issues, Kamala Harris was the one that had come out and said yes, lets do Student Debt Loan forgiveness. It was trumps people in the Supreme Court that stopped it. Its a matter of communicating the issues they are concerned about, the price of groceries. It is trump that says bacon has gone high because of the wind. I mean, the wind. I mean, i could not make this up. Trump is saying im going to solve this by pumping oil when under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris we are pumping more oil than we ever had in u. S. History. I know im out of time but i just have to ask you, Donald Trump now with this im going to have this Audit Czar and its going to be Elon Musk, how much can elon Musk HelpDonald Trump with young voters . Trump is very focused on one group of young voters and it is white male bros, and Elon Musk is the patron saint. Yeah, it is nihilism as policy. It is a big 2000. Word and the Word Cloud that is my life because it means that nothing means anything actually and when it comes to Gen Z, they feel helpless in ways that i think are hard for the older generations to fully recognize because the institutions, they dont trust them. Elon musk is nothing more than a guy who was of course himself just the embodiment, the embodiment of an archetype, an ancient archetype of institutional wealth, cosplaying as a radical. The only thing he has in common with these boys sitting in the Mothers Basement playing Video Games is that neither one got dates in High School. There are no similarities, yet he is their boy. The good news is that Donald Trump will show a complete lack of Impulse Control so if you know that about your opponent, if you are rehearsing this and rehearsing this, i just wonder how you possibly prepare for the degree of chaos that is Donald Trump just talking and freewheeling. Hold on a minute, you can totally prepare for Donald Trump because he has had the same playbook for since you met him 40 years ago so america knows everything there is to know about Donald Trump. Many, many people in this country know very little about Kamala Harris, so how much more is this an opportunity for Success Or Failure for her . Two things. She must show the contrast that she is serious and introduced herself as somebody serious that can run the country, a presence, her persona needs to show leadership and she needs to be prepared to throw him off his game because he is coming as a performative person because he has no content. She should knock him off his game. I was in the president ial primary debates when i ran in 2004. If you get the right if you stick him right, he will he is the kind of guy that Cant Handle Somebody sticking him. He will lose everything else. Talking about Gen Z voters, viewers, are they watching the debate . I think they are watching it but not in the traditional sense. Except for all of the ones who watch msnbc. Of course. A lot of the people are streaming it, watching it on tiktok. You can scroll through and when you get enough of it you can pass on to your favorite tiktok or. There is also a phenomenon called cowatching the that is happening on twitch. You are nodding but theres no way you know what it is. They better be cowatching my show but thats all right. Political speakers on there for Gen Z right now, the stay tuned team, we spent two days in l. A. And will have that story in a few weeks but we are looking for that viral moment, but also for the tangible policy. What is my life going to be like when this person is in office . I think people are watching, already having their minds made up, especially young voters. They dont think theyre looking to be convinced to move to one side or the other. Both of them are good debaters. If you think about the republican primary in 2016, you actually watched other candidates melt around Jeb Bush. Donald trump sat Up There and Jeb Bush disappeared. Chris christy was like The Little Mermaid losing her voice because Donald Trump stole it but Kamala Harris, this is her jam. I agree with half of what the reverend says i want to go through that so that i understand it well. Our poll shows that when we look at the undecided voters, they really dislike Donald Trump. They dislike Donald Trump more than the average voter does. This tells me that the half for you said Kamala Harris has to prove shes serious and she can run the country, that is the thing i think she needs to concentrate on. I dont think people need additional reasons to dislike Donald Trump. I think they know what he is and if they dislike him, they dislike him already, and the people who like him after all of this time and all of these things that have happened, its going to be really hard to shake them from that, so i think Kamala Harris has two approach this debate with i need to get you folks out there who have not decided, a reason to vote for me. Not to dislike Donald Trump. I dont disagree with that. The reason she might take a shot at him as not to move the crowd. It is that he cant take a shot that he is a bully and if you come out there, if you hit him hard the first shot, hes off his game and then you straighten yourself up and say now, this is who i am well here is still reacting in dealing with the facts, she has thrown him off his game. I think this is an opportunity to present as moderate for Kamala Harris. Were talking a lot about okay, how do you reach these undecided people who are not on either side of the edges, right, of this political conversation. I think, harris, when she picked Tim Walz, why didnt she pick a coach . Why does she keep calling him coach . It is because shes trying to reach a giant segment of america that maybe is not politically savvy, but they want to recognize that person is not one of the leftist i have been told about. Kamala harris in contrast to Donald Trump can present as moderate, simply by being a normal, nonextreme psychopath. So to me, truly, i believe that Donald Trump you can play this tape back later. Maybe i will be wrong, i believe i will be right, Donald Trump is going to get off on a bunch of tangents and he will litigate personal grievances because his Impulse Control reveals that he cares the most about of course, himself and his pride and of Kamala Harris as a person going out there saying to america, who do you want to fly this plane, do you want this guy, who has no ability to discipline himself, or a reasonably sane, normal person who is not saying things that feel like woke is a whatever it is that people are afraid of when it comes to buzzwords, just being down the middle normal Politician Person i agree with that but i still think it has to be a positive message about growth. A positive message about improving the nation. Donald trump gets Up There and he says this nation is a disaster, i dont understand why the democrats dont make more of that because that is just not the case and i dont think it is the case for a lot of people. I do think people have struggled with inflation. They struggled with what is happened with higher prices but employment is doing well. Wage growth has been relatively positive. That is a vision of the country, it is an explanation of the country that doesnt go forward with most Peoples View of the world but to shift into a positive vision would be something. One of the issues on inflation, though, even though Wage Growth is outpacing inflation and has for quite some time, even if i have more money in my pocket, when i walk into the deli and the Sandwich Cost 15, i still walk out mad, and so the data is on the side of positivity but the vibe is the problem and that is difficult. Theres Nothing Anybody can do about that no matter what Donald Trump says her, harris says and for me, it is that two beers and a burger is 30 Bucks now. Used to feel like it was 25 Bucks or 22 bucks, depending on how much. Yes and you end up talking about that for the first 15 minutes you are sitting there. Donald trump talks about lowering inflation. I dont see any way he is actually lowering the price level. It is not what economists are anybody is trying to do right now. You promise whatever because you got held to account. Let me give america a very short Economics Lesson here. If you lower the price level, the amount people pay you also lower income levels. The reason why we avoid the concept of deflation is because everything deflates on both sides of the ledger, the prices go down, and her income goes down. Steve, you really know how to go to a party on a Friday Night talking deflation. The girls love it. A lesson i had to learn as a high School Debater was that you are not necessarily trying to win on the points when it comes to the Policy Debate with Donald Trump. I dont think that is going to be Kamala Harris concern. Shes going to have to win the heart and the mind of the judge, the people watching at home but probably cant keep up with steve. Ill be frank, steve. You do a great job explaining as well as anybody possibly could but its going to claver glaze over for so many people and i worry about trying to come off and im guilty of this, trying to come off sounding smart as opposed to relatable. Can they cut out that Deflation Stuff . They cant cut it out. [ inaudible ] one thing, one advantage she has that she needs to use his that he was the president. What happened in your four years, all that you talk about, you did not do and you lead us into a prolonged pandemic that did not have to be that way because he would not listen to the health experts. The majority of americans already think its too easy to get guns and that we need stricter gun laws. Could this be sort of like access to abortion, now finally being pushed into this election . Could the fact that this happened this week actually make something happen . I think It Hand it can particularly when you see that this young man had been in everybodys eyesight, Law Enforcement had been warned. After he was warned, his father bought him an ar15 and his father is been prosecuted. I mean, how crazy is that and you can drive that nail through the wood in the debate and going forward the next 60 days, that we have got to do something about guns. If i am at the debate i am Kamala Harris i say, you got shot and you wont talk about guns. You, you got shot. Your ear, when you are standing here telling me that we shouldnt do anything about Gun Control when you had a Guy Try to kill you and now you got fathers giving their Kids Ar 15s after theyve been warned . Yes, a 14yearold. I cant even meyer, do you think Gun Violence could be an issue that pushes young voters to get out there and participate here . I mean, and just this week Jd Vance was basically saying School Shootings, they are a fact of life. They do not have to be. I think this fatigue is felt especially in young people. There is this feeling of where is safe, if my school is not safe, the Movie Theater is not safe or can i go not have this paranoia. In our poll we found that 85 of voters under 30 said they are fearful about the possibility of Gun Violence in schools are public places. And we did not grow up with that . No, and i think people in Gen Z we see that disparity in that difference and it feels very disheartening knowing that this is going to have longterm consequences on our generation. Will it bring more people out to the polls . I certainly hope so. We are hearing from other young voters with our stay tuned team that it is one of their top issues. Will it bring them to the Ballot Box if theyre still going to have this concern, if theyve had it for the last 10 years . I think a lot of people think they will have it for the next 10 years too unless there is some serious change. What you think about the father of this alleged shooter getting charged . Remember earlier this year in michigan the parents of the shooter were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for giving him guns. There is a walkable aspect of how we try and Cure A Uniquely American disease like Gun Violence, just like look at how it compares globally, right . The father in this story to me it is a Rabbit Hole of a psychological profile that we could get into but my brain goes to the debate because we could talk about the human Interest Side of this endlessly, but to me, Gun Violence is a very easy offensive move to do a Judo Flip because the answer when it comes to playing off the fear of americans as well, thats why we need more security. Thats why we need more guns. And so to me the question actually goes back to business. Why arent we holding Gun Manufacturers accountable . Placa. My Friend Jason Candor has been an evangelist about this topic, like if we treated Gun Manufacturers the way we have treated every other corporation tobacco, automobiles, asbestos how do you make change . Lawsuits. You hold people accountable in court in this is something that is not necessarily politicized by design. This is something that is about people versus corporations, not people versus political parties, not people against liberties. This is about and do we have data on this . Did we ban Assault Weapons for a while and the shootings went down . Before we go to break i want to ask the right of this question. This School Shooting happened at the same time as a whole bunch of states are looking to ban Cell Phones in schools. Do you think the fact that the shooting just happened and there are so many parents that are scared when their kids go to school everyday, the word they want to be sure their kids can contact them in a time of emergency, do you think this could slow down this movement we are seeing to remove Cell Phones and devices . I think it will slow it down. I think people are now even more afraid and want to be able to call their kids. We saw parents there in georgia saying i was calling my kid. I was calling my kid in the release they got when the kid can answer the phone. Now youre going to take away the phones, not take away the guns. Youre not going to do Gun Manufacturers. Youre going after the only way i can call mommy and say they are shooing shooting. Youll take away my call for help but you can leave the Gun Manufacturer untouched. My god.
