Mike Pence wades into abortion debate at Supreme Court

Pence's advocacy group filed a brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The Supreme Court agreed in May to hear the case challenging a woman's right to an abortion.
Dozens of conservative groups are supporting Mississippi's ban on most abortions after 15 weeks.
WASHINGTON – A conservative advocacy group launched by former Vice President Mike Pence is wading into a high-profile abortion case at the Supreme Court, arguing the landmark Roe v. Wade decision has contributed to the destabilization of families.
Pence’s group, Advancing American Freedom, is one of dozens of anti-abortion organizations to file briefs in recent days supporting Mississippi’s ban on most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Nearly 230 GOP lawmakers also filed a brief Thursday, calling on the high court to release Roe's "vise grip on abortion politics."

Yesterday, my sister, who has lived in Northampton more than 50 years, sent me an article by John Paradis from your July 9 issue. It was “Just keep driving, and don’t talk to strangers.”
My sister sent it with a note that said “our relatives in Indiana won’t find this amusing.” I live in Illinois; my reaction after reading it was that her relative in Illinois didn’t find it amusing either. I thought Paradis sounded like a smug, elitist person. That’s as nice as I can put it. Honestly, he really hit a nerve with me.

Make No Mistake About It America… Those Hit Men On January 6, 2021 Were Sent By Donald J. Trump!

July 29th, 2021
By Joyce Davis
I grew up with a lot of TV and a lot of book reading. Most movies that we watch the hit men were the bad guys. They are the guys the heroes are trying to get away from that were sent to come stop whomever got in the way. A hit man is not fighting for his or her own agenda. They have a job or a focus point to accomplish the goal of who sent them. They do as they are told to do. They do not deviate from their mission or their orders. The person or persons that gave them the orders are the only people they would listen to to resend their mission.

Leaks Reveal Spyware Meant To Track Criminals Targeted Activists Instead

This is FRESH AIR. I'm Terry Gross.
Your worst nightmare about how a smartphone can be hacked to spy on its owner became a reality for 37 people around the world whose phones were infected by spyware or whose phones had an attempted penetration. These people included journalists, activists, business executives and two women close to the murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. A forensic analysis revealed that the phones had been penetrated by military-grade spyware called Pegasus, which had been licensed to governments by the private Israeli security company NSO Group. The company says that the Pegasus spyware it sells to governments is intended to collect data from suspected criminals and terrorists. But apparently, the reality is that the spyware was widely misused.

The Real Threat to Democracy Isn't the Capitol Riot – PJ Media

AP Photo/J. David Ake
On Tuesday, the chairman of the Capitol riot committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), claimed that “the rioters came dangerously close to succeeding” in their effort to “upend American democracy.” That statement is, quite frankly, ludicrous, but there are serious threats to American representative democracy at work today, and we need to fight against them.
While the Capitol riot was a national disgrace, it did not represent a serious threat to America’s constitutional system of government. Rioters broke through the strangely weak police lines and breached the Capitol, but the senators and congressmen evacuated safely. Vice President Mike Pence did not bow to pressure, Congress resumed a few hours after the violence, and both chambers certified the Electoral College results, declaring that Joe Biden would be the next president.

Cohen: There is much to lament in the U.S. Congressional hearings on the Capitol breach

BOSTON — The biggest show in Washington this summer is the House select committee investigating the storming of the Capitol on January 6. It opened Tuesday and is expected to have a long run, examining the worst attack on Washington since the War of 1812.

FIRST LOOK: Mike Pence Announces Filing of Amicus Brief Asking Supreme Court to Overturn Roe v. Wade

Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. In addition to communicating support for the state's 15-week abortion law being heard before the U.S. Supreme Court, the brief asks that the Court overturn the landmark decisions of
Roe v. Wade from 1973
 and

While many more amicus briefs have come in since then, perhaps none have come from a more high profile figure than former Vice President Mike Pence, who announced that his organization, Advancing American Freedom (AAF), and others, were filing one on Friday.
Townhall was given a first look at the brief as well as a press release announcing the brief.

Jan. 6 Was Deplorable. It Was Not a Coup

When several hundred extremists mobbed Capitol Hill on Jan. 6, they engaged in a deplorably un-American act of criminality. It was an embarrassing day for the nation, and a dangerous one for the many innocent people and officials engulfed in the mayhem.
Here's what Jan. 6 wasn't:
It wasn't the "worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War." Nor did it veer anywhere near the vicinity of being as dangerous as 9/11. Nor was it a "coup" or an "insurrection" -- not in any way we commonly understand those words. It wasn't a "putsch." Nor did it, as the chairman of the Jan. 6 committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson, claimed, come "dangerously close to succeeding" in upending "American democracy." That's all a myth. It was a riot. Or, as Christopher Caldwell more forgivingly called it in The New York Times, perhaps "a political protest that got out of control."
