Lot to talk about. Let's do it. Now, if it was not clear, donald trump and j. D. Vance spent most of last week proving their bid to the white house is powered by white nationalism. This during a challenging time for the people of springfield, ohio. Some of whom happen to be haitian american thanked to gop lies and conspiracies. Lies that, in fact, been fat checked and corrected by the republican governor of ohio, the wall street journal and even the springfield woman who started the false peteating rumors in the first place. Despite all of the fallout, trump and vance have not backed down. They have doubled down on the lies. Here is vance with a new twist on these downfalls. They are here legally, they are here illegally so, okay, recap quickly. That is j. D. Vance acknowledging haitian americans do have legal immigration status but he is not think that they should. To him they are illegal deported just in a moment's notice when a second trump administration happens in it happens. Now, this should spark and anger anyone who is watching this not just haitian americans or immigration lawyers but all of us not just because of solidarity we are all under threat if we do not bend the knee to donald trump and the maga movement. Trump is saying so himself. This is how he addressed jewish americans at a campaign stop just this week. A campaign stop billed as a fighting antisemitism event. A community that has long been loyal of democratic and gave trump 29% of their vote in 2020. Take a listen. I did all of these things and i got 29%. Think of it. I was not treated right. It is is only because of the democrat hold or curse on you. You can not let it happen. 40% is not acceptable. In my opinion, the jewish people would of a lot to do with a loss if i am at 40%. I was not treated right. Bro, that does not sound anything like outreach to jewish american voters. Trump is scapegoating jews in advance if he were to lose the election and that is a dangerous trope and doing so at an event that is designed to fight antisemitism. That is not it. Remember the muslim ban from his first term? at the same event he promise thursday jewish event he is going to bring that back. We will seal our border and bring back the travel ban. Remember the famous travel ban. We did not take people from certain areas of the world because i did not want people to burning down and killing people and burning down shopping center we are not taking them from infested countries. Let's spend time here. We have heard this dangerous rhetoric before. It is not just reserved for muslims, jews or haitians. This is a plan that referred to his political enemies as vermin and they are poisoning our country and his runningmate is accusing haitian migrants of spreading disease in ohio. Yes, he is really doing this. Take a look. This is what we have learned from the united states holocaust museum about this rhetoric. It is often portrayed percuted people by vermin or disease, nazi ideology focused on the idea that german's racial purity was under attack from the blood of weaker people and nazi propaganda often depicted jews, political opponents and others as parasites that threatened the overall health of germany. I am not invoking it lightly or at all. I am doing it in part because it reminds me about a warning of donald trump going back to 2016. It was a young and up and coming conservative writer that warned trump might be america's next hitler. He called him noxious and reprensible and called him cultural heroin. One day they will realize it. That thoughtful young man was j. D. Vance, eight years before coming trump's vice presidential pick. Some days he is more cynical than trump. He know what trump is and how fascist his ideas are. He said so himself. But now he is donald trump's most aggressive peddler of the same cultural heroin he warned everyone else about eight years ago. At the tender age of 40 he is spreading it to newer generations and guaranteeing that it will be around for a very long time. Starting us off tonight, have my panel. Us off tonight, have my panel. Thank you for being here and starting us off here. What do you make of this turn in j. D. Vance who started out as someone who was a never trumper republican. Now has sort of sipped the while nationalist koolaid. So cynical, charles, it is a grab at power and it is a realization that this white nationalist ideology will get you somewhere, gain you somewhere, he sees it bubbling up as the grassroots base but he is percolating it downward. It is absolutely frightening as you said, goes to a path that many people, if you have polish blood, russian blood, jewish blood, latinamerican blood, if you are the product or the son or a grandson or granddaughter or daughter of someone who fled a regime you can smell this miles away. Ruth, we have talked a lot about the in addition of language and how powerful it can be. You have the historical context to explain it to our audience how it is when dog whistles are given to an audience. Can you revisit it to people who might be late to the party. They are weighted and loaded phrases with larger implications for where we could be heading? reporter: yeah, and we can start back with hitler who called jews black parasites of the nation from the early 1920s on. And it is important that by the time hitler came to power in 1933 germans have been hearing the term for almost, for over a decade. One thing about propaganda you hear extreme things over and over again they don't seem so extreme any more and they become familiar. Now, americans have been hearing trump and immigrants for almost a decade now. What his method is, it is to slowly introduce more and more extreme ideas. So, first we had immigrants and we have this now as the internal enemy. The vermin, the nests, we have to root them out. Now he and vance are introducing this idea of re migration. It is scary there is san idea that is popular with the most extreme far right people in europe. It holds that you should be deported and sent back to your country of origin regardless of your citizenship status. Because if you really want a racial state of white ethno state. If you are legal or illegal does not matter. That is what advances saying. He does not care if haitians are legal or not because they are the wrong race and they will be targeted for deportation. It is a journey of language and journey of concepts that these people have very knowingly taken americans on. It is really disturbing. Ruth. I am glad you touched on that. For a lot of people they need to understand the connection with things like replacement theory and how these things go and white nationalist rhetoric to vilify other people who are not considered to be worthy of being within the american process. Any american process at all. Making those connections are important. Rich, we got 44 days until the election. And this is typically a time where you see folks begin to, as much as they can, pivot their rhetoric towards the middle of the country and try to grab as many independent and centric voters as possible. On the right, with respect to donald trump, we are definitely not seeing that. We are seeing an attempt to sort of stretch and double down to what seems like the farthest reachest of the right to mobilize the base. If you have any sort of idea what is the strategy here with the attempts to do that and forego what would seem to be voters in the middle that might have been persuadable if he did not jump off of the deep end. Baffling, 44 days close to the election. The strategy is these folks know they are declining majority. They understand that if they take this autocratic route they can have the policies of brood support across the country. Three examples, reproductive rights, raising the federal minimum wage, universal prek. I can go on and on. When the population support that and you understand that you are against these things you have to pivot to your hard right. Autocracy is the way. Lies help to accomplish this. Lies, lies, lies, misinformation, seeing all of that. Doubling down on a minority rule strategy. You know, ruth on the lead in we talked a lot about donald trump's comments to jewish americans specifically at an event that was intended to be fighting against antisemitism. And nawill not that and expecting trump being labeled as anticemettic or going too far based on what he said to the audience at that event? well, it is hard not to see him as antisemitic. He has had these vailed or not so vailed threats to jews before. Saying they were disloyal. And, you know, i would hope there would be a backlash. The reality is along with christians, they are his constituencies no matter what he is as and does. And this is, to my mind, knowing history, also extremely misguided. To say the least. So, it is, it is very scary when that quote, that clip you showed it is a combination of grievance, the autocrats grievance. I was treated badly. It was your fault. What is not said, but understood, you will pay. I have little time but i need to make something super plain for me and the audience. If you are someone who is not haitian descent and you are listening to the remarks about springfield and j. D. Vance and everything there, why do you care? how do you make that case? you care because it is the value that is under attack not just the actual people. On friday, they released the results of a preliminary autopsy that did not detect defensive wounds or any signs of physical or sexual assault. Magee's family plans to have an independent autopsy of their own. Regardless of how his life ended the context here does matter. Now, we heard initially about the preliminary autopsy results from the sheriff's office. Have you all heard anything else since then from that office about that autopsy or the details? reporter: on the day of the press conference we had a chance to go over all of the evidence that was currently in the sheriff's possession, we had a chance to make additional inquiries under our harry daniels as the attorney who joined me there. Right now they just want to know what happened. And, they are not making arguments on tiktok. We would expect the sheriff, the elected sheriff of that county to be working with investigators, the attorney general for the state of north carolina in the state bureau of investigation involved to be working with them to serve the people of the county and the family of javion magee. His spin on the evidence to undermined the facts t. Is clear from the medical examiner's report, javion died from a broken neck after he hung from a tree. Now we need to know what got him there and give his family a sense of accountability. Certainly the notion of using social media is an important point. As civil rights attorneys we have seen how the public almost needs some level of evidence or many of these cases fly below the radar. What has to happen before we get the transparency that we deserve for the cases that people may not be able to go viral and get the type of attention put and the type of light shining down on the cases. Where do we go around that? i think what we see in this case is actually a bit hopeful. We see a strategy of online sleuths. People on instagram and tiktok saying that this looks suspicious to me. New polls giving democrats a boost of optimism about where they stand in their battle against donald trump. A recently released howard university poll reveals some red flags are there and it is not just for november but also for the future of the democratic party. First, let's get into the good news. The poll of black voters in seven key battleground states showed overwhelming support for kamala harris, 82% for harris versus 12% for trump with 6% undecided or choosing a third party. A closer look slowed a generational and gender divide that might force a reckoning how they approach their most loyal voting block as we look forward to future races. 89% of black voters over the age of 50 saying voting for harris, that number dropped to 75% for black voters under 50. 75% seems like a strong number but they are clearly not flocking to maga but they are not as partisan or loyal to democratic party as their parents or grandparents. That is especially true for young black men. Black men under the age of 50, 72% surveyed chose harris while 21% favored trump. That is more than 1 in 5. 7% of those black men were undecided or prefer a third party. 28% of young black male voters say they will go for trump or someone else over harris and that should be a five alarm fire for democrats. For decades winning national elections meant running up huge margins with black voters for democrats, on tuesday, national association of black journalists in philadelphia vice president kamala harris was asked about young black male voters, here is what she said. I think it is very important to not operate from the assumption that black men are in somebody's pocket. Black men are like any other voting group. You got to earn their vote. So, i am working to earn the vote. Not assuming i am going to have it because i am black. I want to start with the men because this is a conversation where we have been getting a lot of heat. Phil, i feel like this sort of notion around young black voters who decided to shift their allegiance of trump because of the stimulus check is a little tired and overblown. I think there may be other reasons why black men are looking elsewhere. I am curious with the work that you are doing with black men that we discussed here on the show, have you found that to be the case? reporter: no, first off i want to thank you for having us back on. Happy to be on here. Black men just completed a sin city tour. We talked to thousands of black men feeling overlooked and not considered in the political discourse in the country. This notion that black men are seeking another option or black people are seeking another option because of a check is put forward to paint a story of black men that is simplistic. I think what we have seen traveling across the countrypeople feel, rightfully so, the democratic party is insufficient for the moment in a lot of different cases in a lot of different subjects. Black men are overworked, working multiple jobs, still can not make ends meet. The rises cost of living, can't afford housing, trapped in a cycle of poverty, trapped in incarceration, we feel that the democratic party dodges those questions and does not address them correctly. One interesting thing that you saw on the chart that you showed earlier is that people actually are not moving to trump they are moving and looking for another option. A third option that wants to talk to the direct material needs of black people. Housing, schools, food, jobs, those basic material things that everybody needs that we don't feel that the democratic party has spoken to and does not have a history of prioritizing. When we see big celebrity events and big concerts those things do not resinate because those are the things, those don't put food on the table. I know that in our conversations leading up to the release of and the filming of black men in america: the road to 2024 one thing that we noticed was black men have had a lot of allegiance to the democratic party in significant numbers but it has felt like for some of the people that we talked to, that went under acknowledged or unacknowledged all together. How much of that do you think has made black men or some black men say you know what? you don't appreciate my efforts, i'm out. Or i will look elsewhere or is that message overblown? i think you are right, brother. For far too long talking about the political spear and other spaces and social life in america. We are talked about but not engaged with. In this case, going across the country, you and i talked to a bunch of brothers. I have been on this all year. There is an issue with engagement and education. Traditionally the democrats banked the black democratic vote. They have not had to engage with black men. They are now countering an eco system where there is a lot of activity guiding brothers in a way that moves them out of the political process. I was talking to a young brother in louisiana just over this weekend, 28 years old, military, his issue is that he does not know much about harris and he can not tell the tangible material difference as brother said between the democratic and the political party. The part that i think should raise alarm. When he raises the questions he is beaten back by people in the community or people in the family as if they are ignorant and dump but they are just seeking answers. You have been sitting on your hands and patiently waiting to comment. I would love to get your response. Reporter: no, i mean i don't have a response or rebutel if you will. I think what they have raised is in fact a real thing that is happening a cross the country for decades, really, years. Multiple cycles. Many strategists across the campaigns talked about treating base voters as persuadable voters. And in recent cycles particularly the last two presidential election cycle that i was a part of in 2020, 2016, black men, latino men were viewed in a category of their own. So when we are on the campaigns that i worked on, we would do targeting and talk about these are the buckets of our voters, black men and latino men were in their own bucket, why? because i think there is an increasing recognition that you want to earn the vote of black men in america latino men in america. Again, a number of black women some of the things we are seeing. I have been traveling across the country. You have to put in the work. Putting in the work it is not just adds on black radio stations although they are important, it is not just showing up at churches a couple months out from election day, even though i think that it matters, but real engagement in the community. Going and talking to people. Making your case and asking for their vote. That is what campaigns will do. I think harriswalz campaign is doing that. I will vote, harris talks about her opportunity economy, if you will, and that grew out of opportunity economy tours that she did with focus on black men and small business there is when she was not at the top of the ticket. It is something that i think, important to her but she also realized maybe earlier than others did, that you have to put in the work with actual policy with communities of color. Including black men if you want to earn their votes and want them to cast the ballot for you on election day. Glad you pointed that out. Phil, very quickly, what would you say about the black man tour and things you heard from brothers across the country is the number one policy issue that black male voters seem to be most preoccupied with going into november. Jobs. People, all people, including and maybe especially men in our western world where we are taught that we must be providers feel they don't have adequate opportunity and the capability to provide for their families and provide for themselves. There are a host of issues that come up, incarceration, ending the war on drugs, being able to find and live a healthy life in your community. But adequately be able to provide for your family is a right denied black men for generations. We live in a capitalist society. Black men saying i need a job. I have three of them now and i can not pay for what i need. We want to see not just a president that interviews and says we want to do this but a democratic party right, that fights for working people. Middle class, but working people need to see themselves reflected. Same question. Number one policy issue. Opportunity to provide for your family and safety. Something ground up from the cross road system but black men want to stand up for their families. They want to make sure their kids have a healthy meal before they go to school. They want to build generational wealth, we heard it time and again. There is sals on the flip side of it, something about trump, the big middle finger to the establishment that appeals to black men that also see democratic side forever friend or allies it is fair weather. You just have been around talking to black women voters what is their biggest issue? the economy. And frankly i think the economy is biggest issue for voters across the board in this election which is why understanding where the candidates are it matters here. And one of the candidates in this race, donald trump does not understand one of the biggest bills for families, childcare. That is something that people must talk about. Trump campaign should be asked about the plans. Harris should be asked about her plans and how tangible they are and the time line of them. And i think they are answering those questions but 43 days until election day. People have already started voting. They will make decisions based on the key issues and the economy and how they feel affordability, housing, all of it is part of it. Thank you. Wish i had more time.
