We start this hour with some breaking news. The death toll from hurricane helene has now risen to 89. 30 of those deaths were in north carolina which has seen a record 30inches of rainfall. Nearly 2 million people are without power. And joining general honore. Good to have you on the show. Let me get your assessment from someone like you who knows the damage you're seeing right now. What do you make of the damage we're seeing across the south. Well i think you clarified the point. This was amongst the storm that attacked florida. Made its way through georgia and into north carolina and tennessee. And even parts of virginia. It's a massive storm. I dropped enormous amount of water. Not measured in inches but by a foot in some places 2foot of water dropped. It overdropped the terrain. And when you do that it's going go into the valleys. A lot of commune tips had not experienced that. And what we have seen, with condolences to everyone who lost their lives the impact of the flash flooding that has occurred. The good news is there's a lot of people working to get to them. Let's talk about the operations right now. Something you also know very well. President biden says he plans to travel to the impacted communities this week. He has always approved major disaster declarations for florida and north carolina. In your experience, sir. Are visiting like this from a sitting or former president helpful or do they hinder relief efforts on the ground and more importantly what do those relief efforts need in the immediate short term. Yeah, they're helpful. It reassures the first responders. Those governors and the promise that the federal government will do all it can to help save lives and to help with the recovery. But on the other end, recovery is a living hell. We still have people recovering from storms that happened four or five years ago. Because of the issues we're having with fema. That has to be relooked because there's some ways to automate that. I'm recommending they look at preregistering every home in america. So we know the data on it. Because finding that in south carolina is going to be hard to do with no computers. You have to start gathering that data before the events. But those visits are helpful with the visits from the presidents and governors. Everybody has to pull together and get the work done. Lieutenant russell, thank you i really appreciate that. Let me say this. The national guard is doing great work. They have 11 states supporting them with helicopters and troops. About 5,500 boats and they have the entire department of defense standing by if they need more help. At fort bragg, fort liberty and fort. It certainly looks like they're going to need it. Greatly appreciate it. Switching gears to the race for president. Back in 2015 when donald trump was first running for president he tried to assure voters repeatedly that he respects women. I cherish women. I respect women more than i respect men. Are the men insulted by that by the way. No. See they all say no. But i have great respect. Facing an uphill battle against vice president harris. He's going into that rhetoric again except it's turbo charged. You will no longer be abandoned, lonely or scared. You will no longer be in danger. You're not going to be in danger any longer. You will no longer have anxiety from all of the problems our country has today. You will be protected and i will be your protecter. Women will be happy, healthy, confident and free. Now he's ramped up his unhinged paternalistic rhetoric. Not just at rallies but also on his failed social media. Let's remember who we're talking about here. This man, the selfproclaimed protecter of women has been accused of sexual assault by 26 women since the 1970s. A man who was found liable, legal liable for sexually abusing writer e. Jean carroll. A judge finding that what he actually did was rape. The man who has been credited for overturning rowe versus wade. When you hear that record then you hear this. I'm your protecter. I want to be your protecter as president i have to be your protecter. I hope you don't make too much of it. I hope the fake news doesn't go, oh he wants to be their protecter. Well i am. Reporter: the comments don't just ring hollow they're actually sinister. He sounds like a domestic abuser says the intelligencer. Instead he insists their real problems are loneliness and abandonment. Something trump can fix if they give themselves over to him. And he can't even fathom that women wouldn't like him. I always felt women liked me. I never thought i had a problem. But the fake news keeping saying they don't like me, i don't believe it. That has helped shape his campaign strategy. He's been on what they call the dude influencer circuit. Chatting it up with logan paul, agent ross. All of them men and many of them young men and fueled by a narrow old view old world view of masculinity. 7 of the 9 podcasts have audiences that are overwhelmingly entirely men. Trump appears to also be drawing from even darker massogonistic. About j. D. Vance is on the exact same wavelength. It's no reason that they're so small minded. He has immersed in a. To help us make sense of this, author of for the love of men and msnbc political analyst she's also host of the fast politics podcast and a special correspondent for vanity fair. Do you feel protected by donald trump, molly. What kind of question is that? i'm excited to not have anxiety. What did he say? there are a lot of good promises, healthy, confident. No worries. Nobody is ever going to think about abortion again. Yes. Donald trump is clearly seeing internal polling that show that women are not having it. And this double down strategy. What trump learned in 2016 is he could get these low propensity voters out if he had a radical enough message. I think he never has gotten over that. So they're going like full white dude. Right. And full masculine guy. And they're just totally doubling down on that and now he's seeing it's turning women off. So instead of being normal he's decided he's going to say all these things about what he's going to do for women. And somehow because he's so, you know such a brilliant politician, it will make women believe it. So you bring up a really good point about the attitudes here. And i want to share this with you. Because he's actually gaining some support from women. I want to read this. 63yearold women and trump supporter saying i am a conservative and i'm a christian and i believe that a man's role is to protect women. I'm not trying to paint a broader brush. But there's people who are going to believe this and all he has to do is pick up a few votes. It's no surprise to hear a lot of women for who this message resinates. But you know, if i had to choose between being alone in a forest with a bear or donald trump, i would choose the bear every single time. And i'm sure that there are millionless millions of women across the country and the world who would feel the same way. At least if the bear attacks me he's not going to blame me for it or tell me that i'm too ugly to attack. Which is literally what donald trump has said of the women who accused him. One who won the case against him. It's like saying a fox will make sure that the hen house you know stays unharmed but the pox in this case has already wreaked havoc on the hen house and blamed the chickens for it. The irony of ironies, women, if there weren't men like donald trump in the world women wouldn't need protecting. But he's the cause and need for women's protection in today's society. It's another case of him causing the problem and framing himself as the solution to the problem. Such a good point from liz about the rhetoric being heard from trump. There's something to be said. Perhaps in a twisted way he's not just speaking to women he's actually speaking to a specific type of man. There's a man out there who's going to see that and say, hey i understand what donald trump is saying here, and i share his world view. What is implying, he's talking about women in a parental way. He's not going to media he's going on these like very male podcasts. He should be concerned about women voters that will still vote for him. Even though he bragged about rowe versus wade. I think he's just trying to pick up those voters in the margin. Your thoughts on this as well. Is making the connection between trump, vance and andrew tate and when it comes to their rhetoric. How does this fit into trump's twisted you know world view on women? yeah, thank you for connecting those two issues. So often we talk about women in one block. We talk about masculinity maybe later and these issues are really connected right. There's a lot of men who are suffering. There are a lot of men who feel alone. Who feel lost, who feel disaffected in this country. Young men are more likely to be living with their parents than women are. Young men are more likely to take their own lives than women are. So there's a real problem. And you know, to molly's point i do think women are an afterthought for trump. I think men are an afterthought sometimes for democrats. I think democrats have not gone for men. Democrats have better policies for men but they have to have a message that's as good as the one on the right. And so, i think there's a huge opportunity for democrats to own this message. And to be bold enough to speak to men and boys directly and the way the right is doing. In a way that's on the nose. And to your point in your intro. They're pouring money into this. How do you counter if you're a democrat. Because there's some ads. I will show it to you. In 2005, i went to interview donald trump at maralago. At one time melania went upstairs to change his clothes. And trump said i want to show you this beautiful painting. In this beautiful room. And trump pushed me against the wall. I was shocked and smothered. He had his hands right here on my shoulders. I felt sick inside. How effective are these ads and should we be seeing more of them? yeah, i mean, look. George conway, these are these, audience of one ads. They're meant to make trump crazy. I think this one is also to speak to trump's past. All of his accusers. But i think they are working. I do think democrats, i just want to get back to this idea of masculinity for a second. I do think that democrats have been trying to offer an alternative to this very sort of destructive masculinity we're seeing on the right being advertised. An example of that is walz. Right. Tim walz, yeah. He was in ha michigan football game. He's talking to young men. He's trying to make the case. And also, doug right. I mean, you know, the second gentleman is also trying to make a case for supporting your wife. And how you can be a masculine guy. So i do think there are end roads. It is certainly not as far along as republicans in their sort of embrace of masculinity. What do you think of that ad liz and whether or not it is effective. Because donald trump is someone who has been on the scene if you will in american political life now for close to nine years since 2015, 2016. We feel at least and i don't know if it's just us in the media but we feel we know his track record with women, we know what he's been accused of, we know the accusations and the misogyny. How do we get people to understand that you don't leave your daughter with this man. I think the fathers would also pick the bear in the woods. This is different from 2016 because he's been liable for rape. I think as much as tim walz and doug are definitely cool dudes, i don't know if they're appealing to the kind of men who are in the manosphere and who are consuming andrew tate kind of content. I think that, the kind of message that will resinate with men is maybe the importance of protecting women from men like donald trump. Or even you know a lot of the messaging we've seen kind of work is, talking about you know trump's lack of discipline. Right. His lack of masculinity. You know in a certain sense of masculine virtues traditionally. So yes it's a yes hand, we have to continue this message of telling the truth about donald trump's past and you know present. And also, i think be a little bit more savvy and a little bit more bold with the way we're not just reaching men sort of as a sub text but overtly. Three months after her loss marsh was charged with murder homicide by child abuse. She spent 3 months behind bars and three months in house arrest. This is the postrowe reality women are facing in america today. In a new report out this week shows us that marsha's case is far from an outliar. Pregnancy justice found a record 210 pregnant people faced criminal charges associated with pregnancy, abortion, miscarriage or birth: substance use during pregnancy while attempting to get an abortion or even research it. And get this, 90% of the cases involve statutes that don't require authorities to prove that any harm was actually done to a fetus or baby. Despite all of in, trump says you have nothing to worry about. After all according to him women won't be thinking about abortion at all if he is elected in november. Liz and molly are back with me again. I want to get your thoughts on this. Pregnancy against the law in some places. What do you think of these cases where women are getting put in prison for having a miscarriage. It's america right. A man who is a felon can run for president and a woman can go to jail for researching abortion. Even with republicans, even in prolife circles you weren't supposed to say you know that there's a punishment for the woman. You're supposed to say we'll support her and we'll help her and we're heal her. But for him to say that that was saying the quiet part outloud right. We've seen the results of his policies. And rowe being overturned. That's the consequence. If you say it's a murder, something happens to murderers in our society. There's real consequences. It makes this mystical language around abortion kind of prerowe that republicans could get away with. We love life and not really filling in the details of what that means. You know, we now know that, this is the reality of these bans. And you know, that's what has changed public opinion on abortion. You know that's why postrowe we've seen such a surge in support for abortion and people not wanting it to be legislated by the government. So it's horrifying but it's not surprising. There is now a link between prosecution. Even though it wasn't done outright, that has come to fruition by design. The two main states we're seeing this is alabama and oklahoma. These are the states where women are being held responsible for miscarriages. Where they're being criminally prosecuted for losing a fetus. I think that the most important thing about this is that it has, while many voters don't like it, on the right it has energized the movement. Now they're not satisfying with quote unquote heartbeat bills they want this embryonic person hood. Which means when an egg and sperm get together that's a person. An embryo is a person. It will mean no more ivf. Because you're killing people when you're doing ivf. No more birth control pills. No more morning after pills. This has broad sweeping circumstances. Their findings are actually an under count because they're continuing to miss cases. We're a year and a half after the dobbs decision. How much worse could this get? it will only get worse. The person hood bills are the thought that a fetus is a person. Every time i see someone really defend that, i'm like tell me you don't understand that women's bodies work without telling me that you don't know how women's bodies work. Not just ivf, plan b but also miscarriage is unfortunately a part of the process of pregnancy. 10 to 20% of pregnancies end up in miscarriage. Many women will have miscarriages without even knowing they were pregnant to begin with. To say that right that that is a person is to open up a whole bag of worms where which is what we're seeing with thousands of women already. It's based on a premise that makes no sense. It is another troubling sign of what is playing out in this country and what's at stake in november in this election. Liz, molly, thank you so much greatly appreciate it as always.
