READING TOWNSHIP — Michigan State Police are investigating the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Oscar Herrera by a Hillsdale County Sheriff’s deputy at a residence in the 6500 block of South Edon Road Wednesday night.
A news release from the MSP Thursday afternoon stated deputies were initially dispatched to the residence for a dog-at-large complaint and when the deputy made contact with the resident, the dog attacked the deputy and bit. The deputy fired shots at the dog which resulted in the dog's death.
Herrera then confronted the deputy with a knife, upset that his dog had been killed, and was shot by the deputy. He was pronounced deceased on the scene by Reading Emergency Unit paramedics.
