In 2017, a complaint was filed with the North Carolina State Bar against Newman.
The state bar’s complaint filed before its disciplinary hearing committee in July 2019, says Newman failed to notify the victim of a court proceeding in a 2015 rape case, even though he told a judge that the victim was notified and did not want to be heard.
A three-person panel unanimously decided to issue the three-year stayed suspension, which allows Newman to practice law as long as he follows certain conditions.
Removal hearing
A string of women and families has come forward with claims that Newman mishandled or never prosecuted alleged child sex abuse, rape and murder charges. They found each other on a private Facebook group known as “Mountain Justice.”
