Opinion: We need to share our Black history stories, in all their beauty and pain

Heather Campbell, a citizen-appointee to the Calgary police commission, says we need to share our stories of Black history during Black History Month, as we move forward against racism.
In 2021, the theme for Black History Month is “The Future is Now.” To successfully go forward to the future, however, we must have a shared understanding of our history.
When asked about what they wanted to learn about Black History Month, my young niece and nephew asked me to tell the stories of the heroes. Black History Month belongs to everyone. As Albertans and Canadians, we need to own our shared history, for all of its beauty and pain. Reconciliation and growth happen when we can acknowledge and tell the stories of our shared history and heroes.
