Two New Hampshire teenagers are planning to cycle across the country to raise awareness about suicide prevention in a journey where every mile will matter.Mike Mariani and Devon McLaughlin are two 16-year-old best friends who recently ended their 700-mile bike ride around New England at the Chesterfield Fire Department to honor someone who is no longer here.>> WATCH: The full "COVID-19 Impact: Helping Kids Cope" special"Nate was just a super funny person and very caring," Mike Mariani said.Nate Mariani, Mike Mariani's older brother, died by suicide in 2018. He was a 16-year-old junior at Keene High School."There was no signs, nothing. It just came out of the blue. It was really shocking," Mike Mariani said.>> Do you or someone you know need help? The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255 or online. More resources are at the end of this story.Through that pain, Mike Mariani found purpose. He and McLaughlin launched "Pedaling for Prevention."The pair planned a 72-day, coast-to-coast bicycle ride across nearly 4,000 miles to honor Nate Mariani, spread awareness and raise money for NH Samaritans, a nonprofit that runs a crisis hotline and supports loss survivors.Last spring, the pandemic forced them to reschedule, which is why they cycled across New England instead, but a knee injury cut that short."Even though we had faced challenges and (we have to) keep going to still spread our message," Mike Mariani. The pair held socially distanced meet-and-greets around New Hampshire."It has been difficult through the entire journey talking about the story," Mike Mariani said. "But every time that we do talk about it, we hope that we can help somebody else and reduce the stigma and keep Nate's memory alive."Deb Baird has been drawn to their journey. Her son died by suicide."This spoke to my heart because these two young men are so compassionate and have such strength in the ability to drive inspiration," Baird said. The movement is so inspiring that Mike Mariani and McLaughlin already beat their fundraising goal, topping $23,000 so far."It was weird reaching out to the community, and they just embraced us with open arms and it was amazing," Mike Mariani said."It was really, really cool to see," McLaughlin said. "It still is, yeah." It's only been a few years since Mike Mariani's family moved to New Hampshire from Connecticut. Mike Mariani said the move was hard on his brother and so was a previous loss."My dad passed away when I was 5. So Nate really, really missed my dad. He really had a close relationship with him," Mike Mariani said.At the heart of their mission is an important message for young people."It's OK not to be OK but even more so that help is very much so available," McLaughlin said."I would just like to say that, just keep moving forward and never stop, you know, just believe that it will get better," Mike Mariani said. They are aiming to start the cross-country ride this June in honor of Nate Mariani."It will feel amazing to spread our message all across the country and I think that is something that he would be very proud of," Mike Mariani said. "I will have no doubt that he will be there with us the whole ride."For more information, visit https://sites.google.com/view/pedalingforprevention/home?authuser=0.There are many resources available if you or someone you know need help:National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 (available 24/7 via phone or live chat online)Options for deaf and hard of hearing: For TTY users, use your preferred relay service or dial 711 then 1-800-273-8255Free and confidential support for people in distress, plus prevention and crisis resources for individuals or loved ones211 New Hampshire:Call 211 for information and referrals to resources available across the stateAvailable 24/7NAMI New Hampshire:1-800-242-6264 (calls are returned within 48 business hours; this is NOT a crisis line)Information on National Alliance on Mental Illness NH programs, including local support groups and programs and references to community and national resourcesMakin' It Happen:Information on mental and physical health and wellness, plus information on prevention, treatment and recovery resources for people of all agesNH Department of Health and Human Services:Includes a list of Peer Support Agencies across the state for people who qualify for publicly funded mental health servicesThe Campaign to Change Direction:Information on the five signs of emotional suffering and to make a pledge to help change the conversation about mental health National Institute of Mental Health:Fact sheets on mental health, resources on finding treatment, and information on current research
