• Approves 10 years imprisonment for selling ballot papers
Deji Elumoye
The Senate yesterday passed a bill to establish the Electoral Offences Commission under which anyone caught snatching voting materials during election upon conviction is liable to 20 years imprisonment without an option of a fine.
The passage of the bill was a sequel to the consideration of a report on the bill by the Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Kabiru Gaya, said the bill became necessary in view of INEC’s inability to prosecute electoral offenders in accordance with the provisions of sections149 and 150(2) of the Electoral Act (as Amended).
