Swerving. She went into local chicago politics, and larger missions, oh, such as serving the president of the united states. Herma her mantra is adventure is a swerve, not a straight line. Through figuring out how to have it all, she realized you cant have perfection, and she also realized that help is a necessity. She learned that freedom can sometimes come when you let go of the plan. Valerie truly found her voice during these wonderful swerves. Her journey let me to the final insight about her story, and that is her platform. In a recent interview with trevor noah, valerie was asked, who is she advising now . And her answer was very confidently, im advising myself, and there are a few key things that i care about, and lets look at them. Gender equity. She once told president obama that the women in the white house werent heard, so doing what he would do, he invited them to dinner, told him he valued them, and they all became much stronger in the white house. Gun violence. She has been a strong advocate and supporters of the young survivors, particularly those survivors in parkland, florida. And civic engagement. Valerie is a Firm Believer that we must do all we can to strengthen our nation, particularly now. Otherwise, we and our children will live with the consequences of our apathy. Voting is still one such right that too many people take for granted. Did you know that 46 of people did not vote in the last election . Valerie knows theres still plenty of work to be done. So i got to know her through her book, through her background, and through her work. Kate kendall led the National Center for lesbian rights for 22 years and is currently the Campaign Manager of taking back our court. Kates story is equally incredible, having built the nclr into one of the most important and powerful National Voices in conversations around equality while raising three children and being an engaged partner. So it is only fitting at this amazing womens event where were all going to be invincible in a city known for making history and driving transformation that the invincible Valerie Jarrett tells us her story and imparts her wisdom so that all of us feel empowered to find our voices. So without further adieu, i welcome Valerie Jarrett and kate kendall. Thank you. [applause] [ ] wow. Good morning. Theres a lot of you out there. Thank you. [inaudible] here comes somebody. Mines working okay. There we go. Theres always a plan b. All right. So good morning. Hows everybody doing . [applause] i am im so happy to be here, to be in this conversation with Valerie Jarrett, who i have admired for a very, very long time, who was really one of the guiding lights for president obama. I mean, he had his own moral center for sure, but its also really important to have key leadership and trusted advisors who can always show you true north, and that is what you did with him for both of his terms, so thank you for that. It was my honor. Thank you, kate. [applause] so you mention in your book, one of your chapters is pink me moments, which you can imagine there might be many working in the white house with the obamas. This is one of my pinch mes, to be here with you. [applause] so i want to begin with i was stalking you last night on twitter and dont worry, you wont even know im there. And i noticed a tweet from you that i just want to get a little bit of a read about where we are right now in this moment because this has been a a troubling week for democracy in this country, and you tweeted a statement by the federal Elections CommissionEllen Weintraub expressing her dismay and distress, and the fact that she would not allow her office to endorse or abet a foreign power providing opposition information to a candidate in an election, which donald trump said he would accept. Im just wondering about that, what do you think about this moment and what do we all need to do to ensure that our elections are fair and free from corruption . Well, i have to say, i have conflicting feelings about social media. I have kind of a lovehate relationship with it. In a lot of ways, its brought us together to communicate, and people that dont have their own huge megaphone can use it. But often, it is so mean and okay we are convening. Now, i think any other items for us today . No other items. We are adjourned. Here we are responsible to oversee the Drinking Water distribution system. In San Francisco changes in the fire code required anyone doing representtro fit to the home to get a new fire service this caused the need for new Water Services to spike. We used to do 200 a year. Now we are up to 600. If you are building a new house you need fire protection. You have to make application to the Water Department for that. If you go through the process we come out and install the new line and the new fire line. The project got kicked off by two of our a gms, steve and eric. They recognized the need for improving this process. They pulled together the project and selected the team members and asked me to lead the effort. On c cd there is permit and no parking signs and installing the service, having water caught at the check off and pave. It is a lengthy application process with manual tracking. For construction because we communicate with ccd we have to stay in touch with ccd to inform the customer for updates. At one time there was three separate visits to activate the fire service. Water quality and gate manment and then gate man would go back. Now the gate man goes onetime, one visit and it is done. We dissected the process and looked for ways to streamline the process and use technology to make the experience smoother and what we are building is an online portal for customers to apply without coming downtown and they can get updates. With the online application everything is there. It is built in condition logic with tracking to communicate with the customer without having to take notes. We want to tell you these are 10 steps and you are on step three or four. We streamlined the process. We knocked it down to 65 days. The goal is half of that. From the time you make application to put the check on the table to the time we pave the street, we want it down to 30days. I am proud of the team for the work to get together to understand each others work and come up with solutions. I really wanted the rest of the team to understand the time and deliberation and thought so they could get the recognition that they deserve. I have two ways of looking at my life. I want it to be i wanted to be a Fashion Designer for the movies, and the other one, a political figure because i had some force from family members, so it was a constant battle between both. I ended up, for many years, doing the fashion, not for the movies, but for for san franciscan his and then in turn, big changes, and now i am here. The work that i do at city hall makes my life a broader, a richer, more fulfilling than if i was doing something in the Garment Industry. I had the opportunity to develop relationships with my docents. It is almost like an extended family. I have formed incredible relationships with them, and also some of the people that come to take a tour. She was a dressmaker of the first order. I would go visit her, and it was a special treat. I was a tiny little girl. I would go with my wool coat on and my special little dress because at that period in time, girls did not wear pants. The Garment Industry had the at the time that i was in it and i was a retailer, as well as the designer, was not particularly favourable to women. You will see the predominant designers, owners of huge complexes are huge stores were all male. Women were sort of relegated to a lesser position, so that, you reached a point where it was a difficult to survive and survive financially. There was a woman by the name of diana.
