I would like to thank the dozens of people who will look after this building here on out and look after the health of the people in it. I am very proud what we accomplished together to be here today. We did so under budget, mind you. I am proud tha that we will accomplish all of this in the future. Thank you very much for coming. Thank you. I want to just offer a few reflections. One is that i hope you will hear from all of us just the expression of gratitude. We realize we are in a privileged position to do the work to serve others. That is what a lot of us are very motivated by while in this room. Seven years ago mayor lee and ed had a vision p. 29 properties. 2 billion and where was that going to come from . How was it going to happen . A new program that none of us knew or understood very well. I understand the housing director at the time telling me five singlespaced pages of exceptions to the rules. Like this is what it took. That speaks nothing of all of the people and the institutions who are part of it. I hope you will takethe time to not just read but to grasp what is involved with every one of the people. Most of you here and everyone on the list made a real contribution. I hope you will feel that you own this, if you will, because we were in this role at the center of the work but it is other people doing the work. I dont know what it means to own ellis gardens. This is a community asset. This is Affordable Housing forever to serve people with low incomes forever. There will be a whole generation of people here 40 or 50 years from now celebrating the next rededication. It is a profound moment that i hope we can all appreciate how important not just the rededication but renewal. Grateful to be a part of it. Thank you all for coming. I love that i was in four plus years a a rent control tenant, and it might be normal because the tenant will for the longest, i was applying for b. M. R. Rental, but i would be in the lottery and never be like 307 or 310. I pretty much had kind of given up on that, and had to leave San Francisco. I found out about the San Francisco Mayors Office of housing about two or three years ago, and i originally did Home Counseling with someone, but then, my certificate expired, and one of my friends jamie, she was actually interested in purchasing a unit. I told her about the housing program, the Mayors Office, and i told her hey, youve got to do the six hour counseling and the 12 hour training. She said no, i want you to go with me. And then, the very next day that i went to the session, i notice this unit at 616 harrison became available, b. M. I. I was like wow, this could potentially work. Housing purchases through the b. M. R. Program with the sf Mayors Office of housing, they are all lotteries, and for this one, i did win the lottery. There were three people that applied, and they pulled my number first. I won, despite the luck id had with the program in the last couple years. Things are finally breaking my way. When i first saw the unit, even though i knew it was less than ideal conditions, and it was very junky, i could see what this place could be. Its slowly beginning to feel like home. I can definitely you know, once i got it painted and slowly getting my Custom Furniture to fit this unit because its a specialized unit, and all the units are microinterms of being very small. This unit in terms of adaptive, in terms of having a murphy bed, using the walls and ceiling, getting as much space as i can. Its slowly becoming home for me. As i got into the department and through the years of problems and Everything Else that means a lot i can represent women and in order to make that change how people view us as a very important part of the Vice President you have topanga you have to the first foot chase through the fight are you cable of getting that person whether large or small into captivity that is the test at times. As an agent worked undercover and prevent external and internal loss to the company it was basically like detective work but through the company from that experience and the people that i worked around Law Enforcement that gave me an action when i came to be a cadet i saw i was exploded to more people and the security he was able to build on that. Unfortunately, we have a lot of women retire to recruiting right now is critical for us we gotten too low faster the percentage of women in the department and us connecting with the community trying to get people to realize this job is definitely for them our Community Relations group is out attempt all the time. The Lasting Impact of her contributions is helping us develop a modern utility power purchasing division. That is why i nominated her for this award. This award was surprising. I feeling grateful to be recognized. A lot of people do good work and it is nice to have my accomplishments valued and recognized in the Environmental Stewardship realm. A Lasting Legacy is creating a modern process to help new employees that come here understand how we do business. We couldnt have done it without her. I am a utility specialist on the Power Supply Team and the power enterprise. Shop and dine in the 49 promotes local businesses and challenges residents to do their business in the 49 square files of San Francisco. We help San Francisco remain unique, successful and right vi. Im one of three owners here in San Francisco and we provide mostly live Music Entertainment and we have food, the type of food that we have a mexican food and its not a big menu, but we did it with love. Like ribeye tacos and quesadillas and fries. For latinos, it brings Families Together and if we can bring that family to your business, youre gold. Tonight we have russelling for e community. We have a great breakfast spot call brick fast at tiffanies. Some of the older businesses are refurbished and newer businesses are coming in and its exciting. We even have our own brewery for fdr, ferment, drink repeat. Its in the San Francisco Garden District and four beautiful muellermixer ura alsomurals. Its important to shop local because its kind of like a circle of life, if you will. We hire local people. Local people spend their money at our businesses and those local mean that wor people willr money as well. I hope people shop locally. [ ] hello everyone. Welcome to the bayview bistro. It is just time to bring the Community Together by deliciou deliciousness. I am excited to be here today because nothing brings the Community Together like food. Having amazing food options for and by the people of this community is critical to the success, the longterm success and stability of the bayviewhunters point community. I am nima romney. This is a mobile cafe. We do soul food with a latin twist. I wanted to open a truck to son nor the soul food, my African Heritage as well as mylas continuas my latindescent. I have been at this for 15 years. I have been cooking all my life pretty much, you know. I like cooking ribs, chicken, links. My favorite is oysters on the grill. I am the owner. It all started with banana pudding, the mother of them all. Now what i do is take on traditional desserts and pair them with pudding so that is my ultimate goal of the business. Our goal with the bayview bristow is to bring in businesses so they can really use this as a launching off point to grow as a single business. We want to use this as the opportunity to support Business Owners of color and those who have contributed a lot to the community and are looking for opportunities to grow their business. These are the things that the San Francisco Public Utilities commission is doing. They are doing it because they feel they have a responsibility to san franciscans and to people in this community. I had a grandmother who lived in bayview. She never moved, never wavered. It was a house of security answer entity where we went for holidays. I was a part of bayview most of my life. I cant remember not being a part of bayview. I have been here for several years. This space used to be unoccupied. It was used as a dump. To repurpose it for Something Like this with the bistro to give an opportunity for the local vendors and food people to come out and showcase their work. That is a great way to give back to the community. This is a great example of a publicprivate community partnership. They have been supporting this including the San Francisco Public Utilities commission and Mayors Office of workforce department. Working with the joint Venture Partners we got resources for the space, that the businesses were able to thrive because of all of the opportunities on the way to this community. Bayview has changed. It is growing. A lot of things is different from when i was a kid. You have the t train. You have a lot of new business. I am looking forward to being a Business Owner in my neighborhood. I love my city. You know, i went to city college and fourth and mission in San Francisco under the chefs ria, marlene and betsy. They are proud of me. I dont want to leave them out of the journey. Everyone works hard. They are very supportive and passionate about what they do, and they all have one goal in mind for the bayview to survive. All right. It is time to eat, people. Bayview. A lot discussion how residents in San Francisco are displaced how businesses are displaced and theres not as much discussion how many nonprofits are displaced i think a general concern in the Arts Community is the testimony loss of performance spaces and venues no renderings for establishes when our lease is up you have to deal with what the market bears in terms of of rent. Nonprofits cant afford to operate here. My name is bill henry the executive director of aids passage l lp provides services for people with hispanics and aids and 9 advertising that fight for the clients in Housing Insurance and migration in the last two years we negotiated a lease that saw 0 rent more than doubled. My name is ross the executive directors of current pulls for the last 10 years at 9 and mission we were known for the projection of sfwrath with taking art and moving both a experiment art our lease expired our rent went from 5 thousand dollars to 10,000 a most. Im the nonprofit manager for the Mayors Office of Economic Workforce Development one of the reasons why the mayor has invested in nonprofit displacement is because of the challenge and because nonprofits often commute Technical Assistance to understand the negotiate for a commercial lease. Fortunate the city hesitate set aside funds for businesses facing increased rent we believable to get some relief in the form of a grant that helped us to cover the increase in rent our rent had been around 40,000 a year now 87,000 taylors dollars a year we got a grant that covered 22 thousands of that but and came to the minnesota Street Project in two people that development in the better streets plan project they saved us space for a Nonprofit Organization National Anthem and turned out the Northern California fund they accepted us into the Real Estate Program to see if we could withstand the stress and after the program was in full swinging skinning they brought up the Litigation Fund and the grants were made we applied for that we received a one thousand dollars granted and that grant allowed us to move in to the space to finish the space as we needed it to furniture is for classes the building opened on schedule on march 18, 2016 and by july we were teaching classed here. Which we found out we were going to have to leave it was overwhelm didnt know anything about commercial real estate we suggested to a bunch of people to look at the nonprofits Displacement Mitigation Program you have access to commercial real estate either city owned or city leased and a city lease space become available there is a 946,000 grant that is provided through the Mayors Office of Economic Workforce Development and thats going to go towards boulder the space covers a little bit less than half the cost it is critical. The purpose of the Organization Trust to stabilize the arts in San Francisco working with local agency i go like the Northern California platoon fund that helped to establish documents of our long track record of stvent and working to find the right partner with the organization of our size and budget the opportunity with the purchase of property were sitting in the former disposal house theatre that expired 5 to 10 years ago we get to operate under the old lease and not receive a rent increase for the next 5 to 7 years well renting 10,000 square feet for the next 5 to seven years we pay off the balance of the purpose of this and the cost of the renovation. The loophole will that is unfortunate fortunate we have buy out a reserve our organization not reduce the services found a way to send some of the reserves to be able to continue the serves we know our clients need them we were able to get relief when was needed the most as we were fortunate to arrive that he location at the time, we did in that regard the city has been weve had tremendous support from the Mayors Office of Economic Workforce Development and apg and helped to roommate the facade of the building and complete the renovation inside of the building without the sport support. Our lease is for 5 years with a 5 year onyx by the city has an 86 year lease that made that clear as long as were doing the work weve been we should be able to stay there for decades and decades. The single most important thing we know that is that meaningful. It has been here 5 months and even better than that we could image. With the Economic Development have announced an initiative if ours is a nonprofit or know of a nonprofit looking for more resources they can go to the office of Economic Workforce Development oewd. Its been my dream to start is a Valley School since i was a little girl. Im having a lot of fun with it clapping the biggest thing we really want the kids to have fun. A lot of times parents say that Valley Schools have a lot of problems but we want them to follow directions but we want them to have a wonderful time and be an affordable time so the kids will go to school here. We hold the classes to no longer 12 and theres 23 teachers. I go around and i watch each class and theres certain children i watched from babies and its exciting to see them after today. The children learn how to follow directions and it ends up helping them in their regular schooling. They get selfconfidents and today, we had a residual and a lot of time go on stage and i hope they get the bug and want to dance for the rest of their it did take a village. I was really lucky when i was 14 years old to get an internship. The difference that it made for me is i had a job, but there were other people who didnt have a job, who, unfortunately, needed money. And they were shown to commit illegal acts to get money. That is what i want to prevent. [ ] today we are here to officially kick off the first class of opportunities for all. [applause]. Opportunities for all is a program that mayor breed launched in october of 2018. It really was a vision of mayor breed to get to all of the young people in San Francisco, but with an intention to focus on young people that have typically not being able to access opportunities such as internships or workbased learning opportunities. Money should never be a barrier to your ability to succeed in life and that is what this program is about. Theres always these conversations about young people not being prepared and not having experience for work and if they dont get an opportunity to work, then they cannot gain the experience that they need. This is really about investing in the future talent pool and getting them the experience that they need. It is good for everyone because down the road we will need future mechanics, future pilots, future bankers, future whatever they may be in any industry. This is the pipe on we need to work with. We need to start developing talent, getting people excited about careers, opening up those pathways and frankly giving opportunities out there that would normally not be presented. [ ] the way that it is organized is there are different points of entry and different ways of engagement for the young person and potential employers. Young people can work in cohorts or in groups and thats really for people that have maybe never had job experience or who are still trying to figure out what they want to do and they can explore. And in the same way, it is open for employers to say, you know what, i dont think we are ready to host an intern yearround are all summer, but that they can open up their doors and do site visits or tours or panels or conversations. And then it runs all the way up to the opportunity for young people to have longterm employment, and work on a project and be part of the employee base. Something new, to get new experience and meet people and then you are getting paid for it you are getting paid for doing that. It is really cool. I starting next week, i will be a freshman. [cheers and applause] two of the things i appreciate about this program was the amazing mentorship in the job experience that i had. I am grateful for this opportunity. Thank you. Something i learned at airbnb is how to network and how important it is to network because it is not only what you know, but also who you know to get far in life. During this program, i learned basic coding languages, had a had to identify the main components and how to network on a corporate level. It is also helping me accumulate my skills all be going towards my College Tuition where i will pursue a major in computer science. For myself, being that i am an actual residential realtor, it was great. If anybody wants to buy a house, let me know. Whenever. [applause] it is good. I got you. It was really cool to see the commercial side and think about the process of developing property and Different Things that i can explore. Opportunities for all was a great opportunity for all. We were aiming to have 1,000 young people register and we had over 2,000 people register and we were able to place about between 50 and did. We are still getting the final numbers of that. Over several weeks, we were able to have students participate in Investment Banking they were able to work with our team, or technology team, our engineering 20 we also gave them lessons around the industry, around financial literacy. There are 32,000 young people ages 16 and 24 living in San Francisco. And imagine if we can create an opera skin it just opportunity for all program for every young person that lives in public housing, Affordable Housing, low income communities. It is all up to you to make that happen. We have had really great response from employers and they have been talking about it with other employers, so we have had a lot of interest for next year to have people sign on. We are starting to figure out how to stay connected to those young people and to get prepared to make sure we can get all 2400 or so that registered. We want to give them placement and what it looks like if they get more. Lets be honest, there is always a shortage of good talent in any industry, and so this is a real great career path. For potential sponsors who might be interested in supporting opportunities for all , there is an opportunity to make a difference in our city. This is a really thriving, booming economy, but not for everyone. This is a way to make sure that everyone gets to benefit from the great place that San Francisco is and that we are building pathways for folks to be able to stay here and that they feel like they will belong. [applause] the building we are standing here with right now was built in 1914. It has been in San Francisco for as long as San Francisco goodwill has been in San Francisco. Who knew that, right . We have both been here for over 100 years. This building has been a parking garage, it has been an art gallery, and now it is home to a training and Community Center for this community to participate, share, and learn. I want to take a quick moment to introduce our board chair. He served on the board for almost three years. He has been an influential entrepreneur. He is a philanthropist, a volunteer, and a compassionate human being. I just want to introduce eric. [applause] i usually dont get such nice introductions. Thank you. We are proud to be moving here to the tenderloin. It is really, really exciting to be in this space. Theyre going to be some any great opportunities for us to part with great organizations here and i cant tell you how proud we are to be here. As an investor, i look for misunderstood organizations where there is a real difference between perception and reality. That are managed by strong management teams, driven by strong purpose, where my investment, whether it is time or money, can make a real difference. I want to unpack that for a second. Really, whats misunderstood about goodwill is our mission. When i talked to most people out there, people really dont seem to understand what we stand for and why were doing what we are doing. So i think that really the best way to understand is the old story about if you catch a man of fish, he will eat for a day. If you teach them and how to fish, you will eat for life. That is what we are all about. We are all about providing Second Chances by providing jobs and training for those who have barriers to employment.
