Delaware environmental officials have fined the company that took over the formerly publicly operated Port of Wilmington more than $530,000, claiming it is flouting environmental and permitting regulations.
The order issued by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control claims GT USA Wilmington, the port's operator, has been using diesel-powered generators that emit too much air pollution, were installed without a permit and have been moved around the facility in an attempt to navigate around state environmental regulations.
The fine came down March 18, assessing a one-time, half-million-dollar fine along with a daily, $5,000 penalty through April 1st if the company did not cease use of the generators.
