PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The State of Rhode Island reached a tentative contract agreement with the Providence Teachers’ Union Monday night, according to Governor Dan McKee.
No specific details have been released yet. Both sides have agreed to not discuss the terms publicly until the contract is finalized.
That could happen over the next few weeks.
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza released the following statement Tuesday in response to the news:
“Two years ago, we brought the State into Providence Public Schools for the express and sole purpose of transforming the teacher’s contract,” said Providence Mayor Jorge O. Elorza. “It is widely recognized that the transformation of our schools cannot take place without a top-to-bottom reform of the teacher’s union contract. I eagerly await to see the details but anything short of a transformational contract will be selling our kids short and it is something we will not accept.”
