Extraordinary day at the vatican. Heading to the polls, iraq preparing for a pivotal election. We discuss indepth in the week ahead. Theres absolutely no place in the nst ba family n. B. A. Family for ignorance, intolerance, reprehensible comments that are not fitting for what the league is about. Former n. B. A. All star Kevin Johnson speaking for the players association, joining the fire storm condemning a racist ram attributed to the owner of the rant attributed to the owner of the l. A. Clippers. Lets go to melissa chan outside the oracle arena. What has the rehabilitation been like. The final score was 97118 the l. A. Clippers were clobbered. You have to wonder whether the controversy swirling around the owner had an impact on the performance of the team members. Reporter the protest took place before the game, with players wearing inside out warm up journeys so the l. A. Clippers logo could not be seen. Fans at the game against the warriors expressed shock at the statements allegedly made by clippers owner Donald Sterling. He sounds ridiculous. He owns a Basketball Team with African American players. That makes him sound racist. I love the team, im a fan, i support the team. Whatever he said is his own personal thing, not ours. We love our clippers. The issue goes beyond basketball with president obama commenting at a press conference halfway around the world during his visit to malaysia. When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you dont have to do anything, just let them talk. Thats what happened here. The audio that has gone viral has renewed the debate about america and racism. lebron james, one of the biggest names in the game is calling on new n. B. A. Commissioner adam silver to take a stand against any bigot tri. Theres big olry. Bigotry. Theres no room for that in the game. Its the greatest game, and comment like that, it takes our game, we cant have it not from a player, owner or fan. Adam silver promised action, but the n. B. A. Investigation could be complex. The voice from the recording has to be authenticated as Donald Sterlings. There may be an issue about how it was obtained. The Player Association is being asked to be included in any decision about the owner. We are one family, im confident well speak together in one voice. Theres no place in the n. B. A. Family for ignorance, intolerance, reprehensible comments that are unacceptable and not fitting for what the league is about. As for the team, clippers coach doc rivers believes the best move is to move on. The biggest statement we can make as men, not black men, is to stick together and show how strong we are as a group. Not splinter, walk. Its easy to protest. That will be in our play. The team was hoping for a different outcome. The clippers taking a pummelling, losing by double digits. Reporter an important point is while the comments are a shock to many some say its nothing new, its been going on for years. The question could be why Donald Sterlings behaviour has been ignored and no action has been taken for so long. A lot of questions. Melissa chan live in oakland. Donald sterling is not talking. His wife is, rochelle provided this statement saying Donald Sterling is no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to allegations of race. Courtney kealy has more. Reporter billionaire of bevly hills Donald Sterling owned the clippers since 198 is and has 1981 and has never been disciplined. In 2009 esp named his team the worst franchise in ports. He was more concerned with turning a profit. The latest allegations of racism do not appear to be a surprise to many. If you keep a vicious dog for a while, you cant be surprised when it bites someone. Donald sterlings racial history is on the record. It cost him money, his reputation before this. So im amazed that anyone is surprised at this, and frankly im kind of spruffed that the n. B. A. Surprised that the n. B. A. Is being let off the hook. Donald sterling paid out several millions to settle two lawsuits accusing him of racially disprim gnatry practices discriminatory practices. He dances to his own beat, his own drum. Former manager elgin baylor sued him unsebbing suss fully, accusing him of race and age discrimination. A statement was released the Group Announced it will not give him a previously announced Lifetime Achievement award on may 15th. I spoke with Charles Smith a form l. A. Clippers player who said the fallout could be farreaching. It goes beyond the american borders. The league has owners from india, russia, southeast asia, they are a global league. They view Race Relations differently. When you see Something Like this come out and it goes global and viral, they are looking at how the commission will deal with this. They think about do they want to be a part of Something Like this. The league is trying to go global. Smith thought a boycott would not be a good idea and fans should wait for the investigation. Now to the crisis in ukraine. Prorussian supporters took over a television station. Germany is condemning the parading of european observers kidnapped on friday. Prorussian militias released one, several others are in custody. Russian militia captured three Ukrainian Special forces officers and they, too, were shown to the media. Barnaby phillips has more from near donetsk in eastern ukraine. Reporter the European Military observers were paraded before cameras by the selfponded major appointed mayor of slovyansk, vechislav ponomaryov. They are in no position to complain about what happened to them. We are not prisoners of war, but the guests of mayor vechislav ponomaryov, and are treated as such. At least they were able to show their families they are alive and well. Later, one observer from swedeb was released on the grounds of you will health. Others have not been treated so kindly. These three men were captured by prorussian government need slovyansk. Ukrainian intelligence officers, and this is what they locked like after the interrogation. On the road into slovyansk. The Ukrainian Army. This is not a town under siege, but the soldiers are working to prevent more weapons from coming in. This is the Ukrainian Army trying to show that it is in control. Throughout this crisis the approach as been hesitant and cautious. That is because the government in kiev is very concerned how russia will respond to the use of force by these men. [ chants ] in the next town, artemivsk, a demonstration in favour of russia. It is a small crowd, although they do seem to have some support on the sidelines. Prorussians control the government building in donetsk. They had an unexpected visitor, mikhair khodorkovsky once one of russias richest men before falling out with Vladimir Putin and was imprisoned, now trying to mediate in ukraine. But they call him a traitor and tell him to go away. Also in donetsk, armed prorussians took over the regional tv station, and the ukrainian police, unreliable allies of the government in kiev, stood by and watched it happen. The largest crowds of the day were in the cemeteries. This is the day of the dead, when people go to meet their ancestors spirits. Nataliya mourns dead relatives and wonderers what they would make of the chaos. Translation my relatives would be shocked if they could see what is happening. My brother lives in russia, and i life here. Im afraid of a war, that my son will be taken into the army. Shes part of the silent majority that wants piece and the country to stay intact. G7 nations agreed to step up sanctions against russia. Earlier i spoke to Alexander Cooley from Barnard College about the effectiveness of gas sanctions. To be european, it would not be worth sanctioning russia, if they play double, triple for their energy. Is that why we are seeing china step up to the plate here, possibly becoming another customer of russia . The chinese dimension is one of the most neglected angles. You have china increasing its economic engage. With russia. For engagement with russia. For 10 years there has been a stalled gas deal of russia to supply china 40 b. C. N and to shift away from the dependency on the european market. The russians will capitulate to the chinese. Youll see an energy deal signed in may. Russia needs to signal other options. It will embrace china. Thanks to Alexander Cooley with Barnard College. At home we are following dangerous weather. A tornado killed two people in northeastern oklahoma, the extent of the damage is unknown. The storms are also hitting missouri, this is new video from the kansas city area. There are reports of a tornado on the ground. That has not been confirmed. Take a look at the damage this line of storms did to that part of missouri. Strong winds blowing the tractor trailers off the internet. Fortunately no injuries have been reported. Rebecca, this is one of the several powerful storms tearing across the heartland. Yes, and we didnt have tornado deaths. It was a long stretch that we were looking back to 1950 when that happened. Largely in part because it was so cold for the first part of our spring. So we had a very slow start to our tornado season. Tonight the number of tornado is impressive. So far we had 12 spotted. They stretch from oklahoma, across kansas, nebraska, iowa, mississippi under a tornado warning. We are tracking a line of storms as it moves through. The problem is we have a center of low pressure rotating behind the line of storms, keeping the strong thund stos rolling through the night ahead. And the ones that come at night. They are the most dangerous. I wanted to show you highlighted in white, oklahoma, where we had the two deaths reported. On route 66. We saw the line of storms tracking through quickly, and another line of storms in temaze, east of texas, east of dallas. Well track this. If its not bringing tornado, its bringing damaging wind gusts. In addition to the line of thunder storms, bringing winds, we have the flash flood potential, the large hail potential, and a lot of lightening. Lightening is stretching along the west coast, and also throughout the central portion of the states. Its a dangerous night to be outside. We have this much lightening and tornado moving through. Warnings keep popping up in the central midwest, and well continue that in nebraska, and iowa southward again, even into parts of mississippi and arkansas. Another edition to the storl is the cool down ypd it. That is it a down behind it. That is a big drop in texture. Still ahead it was a day of four popes. [ music ] two bearing witness to two named as saints. An historical moment at the vatican we take you live. President obama defending the malaysian handling of the missing flight mh370. And what they got right. Voters go to the polls in iraq, and the challenges still facing the country after america left. Catholic pilgrims from all over the world made the trip from vatican city and watched as john xxiii and john paul ii were canonized. Many visited the tomb. Nick schifrin is live with more. This clearly was a huge historic weekend for the Catholic Church. It was a day of firsts. It was a day of celebration for two of the churchs 20th century titans, and a day for pope francis to deliver messages one of unity and the other of striving for betterment for all of the catholic faithful watching in the square, and for the church itself. [ singing ] reporter . Reporter in front of a million faithful. [ singing ]. An ancient ceremony became a memorable moment. Never before has the church sainted two popes at once. Never before have two living popes publicly celebrated mass together. Never before have this many people made the pilgrimage to rome and st. Peters square. In a single statement pope francis canonized two popes who had remarkable influence with different pap assies. For the one billion kath lirks, john xxiii and john paul iis legacies are fresh. Specially strong for 48yearold andreas widmar. A lot of people come looking for hope and meaning and expressing their faith. They are responding to a call of john paul ii who said do not be afraid and turn to god and have faith. He knows that call well arriving in rome as a 20yearold swiss guard. Since the 15th century the guards have been responsible for the popes security. When andreas widmar met john paul, he was agnostic. I came because i thought being a body guard was the coolest thing you could do. Once i met john paul, i would see him pray and i felt differently. Someone felt such a peace, it made me want to pray. He taught that faith didnt have to be difficult and complicated, it could fulfil him. He talked about how i was made for excellence, and my faith could help me fly like an eagle. To sore to the heights. Pope francis echoed and expanded that message. John paul ii was seen as conservative, john xxiii as progressive. Translation john xxiii and john paul ii cooperated with the holy spirit in renewing and updating the church, keeping with its supreme features. [ singing ]. The connonisation ceremonies are the same for more than a century. John pauls blood and a piece of john xxiiis skin presented as relics. They helped to revere them as saints, and reminding everyone to be saints is to be human. Only saints go to heaven. We are meant for this. We are built and created to become saints. We need to understand that the Spiritual Life and the holily life is not that far off. There are critics of todays dual canonization. For these faithful today was an unprecedented ceremony two popes, two saints, and 2,000 years the church has never done this before. The pilgrims in the front row waited more than 12 hours to be there. They said it was worth the wait because this had never happened in the churchs history and predicted it would never happen again. Wed talk about this, and theres a lot of criticism inside and outside of the church. Yes. Within the church this is about the actual steps that were taken to connonisation. John paul ii is the fatst caponisation, a lot saying its too fast. John xxiii never performed the second miracle, a lot questioning whether pope francis cut too much red tape. Outside the church, a lot of people talk to the sexual abuse scandal, especially in the u. S. And survivors of those abusers who are here this week say that someone who concealed sin is no sit. Thats the line about john palm, believing that john paul knew there was a lot of abuse, knew that a lot of priests were abusing and did nothing about it or in some cases actually shielded those priests. Those people are saying that john pal is no saint paul is no saint, but the voices of dissent are outnumbered by the huge outpouring in rome today and all the pilgrims watching from outside of rome. Nick schifrin live in rome. Thank you. Throughout lerk Kath Latin America catholics are celebrating and items are on display at the basilica. Priests throughout argentina devoted masses to john xxiii and john paul ii. Im grateful that he is a saint. And he deserved this. Hes been a good and wellloved poem by everything. In the philippines children celebrated with a parade reenacting todays ceremony. Pope john xxiii stirs emotions from american catholics, many reflecting on his legacy. John terrett has more from a cathedral. American catholics have been building up to this day. John xxiii and john paul ii the newest saints. Its amazing. I never thought i would live in a time where i would relate to john paul ii and see him canonized. I think its great. That few issest parliament housed by the majority of american catholics. They may agree with the work, many expressed their love for john paul ii. Remembering his multiple visits to america in his 27 years as pope. Not all american catholics are happy. Some say the elevation of john paul ii is too soon and point to his role in the Church Sex Abuse scandal accusing him of doing little to help the victims and protecting paedophile priests. Those against the elevation feel ignored and does respected by rome. Many seem existed, if not overjoyed by john pauls saint hood. This womans mum rang from the caribbean to tell her to get into church and pray for the saints. She said you have to go, you have to go, i havent been to church for a couple of weeks. Shes like please make it in for me. My mum in haiti was watching as well. I pray to the lord, the virgin mary. Now you pray to john paul and john. Yes. Catholics believe if you pray to the saint, as often as not theyll help you. Two more names have been added to the canon of saints, one remembered with great affection. Preparations are underway in the philippines for president obamas visit. He touches down in a couple of hours. President obama is expected to speak about a 10year deal allowing a largest u. S. Preps in the philippines. Earlier the president was in malausha where he malaysia where he defended the countrys fruitless effort to find missing flight mh370. Mike viqueira with the latest. Reporter after weeks of suspicion that he and his government have not shared all they know about flight mh370, Prime Minister najib razak got a public boost from president obama. The United States and other partners have found the malaysian government eager for assistance, have been fully forthcoming with us in terms of the information that they have. Najib razaks government is under fire for the human rights record and charges of systematic abuse by police, and government targetting of gays. President obama defended najib razak, and rejected criticism of his failure to meet the twicegaoled Opposition LeaderAnwar Ibrahim while here. The fact that i have not met with mr Anwar Ibrahim is not indicative of our lack of concern, given the fact that there are a lot of people i dont meet with, and Opposition Leaders that i dont meet with. President obama will sent the national securely advisor susan rice to meet with anwar. Najib razak believes he has pushed through reform. You should no unestimate or diminish what we have done. The crisis in ukraine hung obvious the stop in malaysia, the u. S. And malaysia threatened sanctions on broad sections. Some in europe are baulking. On sunday president obama said the u. S. Will not go it alone the. Well be in a stronger position to deter mr Vladimir Putin, when he sees the world is unified and the United States and europe, rather than this is just a u. S. Germany is condemning the holding of eight militias, and three captured Ukrainian Special forces officers. The Catholic Church marked an historic occasion popes john xxiii and john paul ii were named saints at the vatican. Thousands travel to italy to celebrate the dual canonization. Its sunday night and a look at the week ahead. Two years after the last american soldiers left, the country is far from peaceful. In the runup to wednesdays vote violence is getting worse. We begin with a report from imran khan in baghdad. Have the americans forgotten about iraq, thats the narrative u hear in baghdad. Prime minister Nouri Almaliki says the americans need to step up their support, saying hes fighting a war on ter in an terror in Anbar Province and needs help jets, missiles and surveillance drons. America said theyll give him the heavy equipment, but the timeline is lagging and Prime MinisterNouri Almaliki is frustrated. Many say the americans shouldnt ha left e country without making a deal or forcing a deal between the different sects in iraq. The Prime MinisterNouri Almaliki, the tribal leaders, the sunni tribal leaders and politicians sat around a table and hammered a deal out between themselves. Instead the americans, they say, left, leaving Prime MinisterNouri Almaliki to fill the gap. How did he fill that gap . Iran was one of the ways he filled the gap. That would have been a relationship between iran and iraq regardless of whether the americans stayed or not. They are regional allies, neighbours, and theyll always be that kind of relationship. When you have seen to be abandoned by the americans. You look to the people that can supply weaponry. That was a quote given by an iraqi politician. The americans will not tell the weapons. After a slow drawdown, the last american soldier pulled out of iraq in december 2011. Iraqi troops were supposed to take control of the country. What emerged was a security vacuum. Prime minister Nouri Almaliki met with president obama in washington and asked for American Military help. As violence increased so has division between shias and sunnis. Guarding the vote is certain to be a big challenge. To children how iraq changed. Lets bring in douglas, the director for iraq at the National Security council under bush and obama. Hes at the America Foundation in washington d. C. , and in boston, from Harvard KennedySchools International programme. Thank you for being with us. I want to start with you. When you look at the big picture, the elections in iraq. How significant are these . I think we are at a significant turning point. The 2010 elections were not good for iraq. They were ones that pushed the limits of the iraqi political system in a way that i compared to what bush v gore did in america. The institutions couldnt handle the three ponderous blocks, the shia aligning under maliki, and the sunnis coming together and the kurds in another block. Do you agree, especially since the assumes is that the current Prime Minister is going to easily win . Its an interesting contrast when you look at 2010 compared to now. In many ways 2010 was a more hopeful time than today. You had possibility the most stable period that iraq experienced since the invasion in 2010, and two big coalitions that had sizeable representations of sunnis and shiites and using nationalist slogans, and encouraging iraqis to think of themselves as rickies first. Its interesting for doug to say that theres more hope this time because i actually i think we are in a situation right now where anbar might not even be able to vote in the election, where we are facing violence and, you know, it will be a miracle if the election work said according to plan. Lets talk about that. She raises an interesting point considering how violent the country has been. In some ways its more violent since the u. S. Pulled out. Well, iraq is largely facing what can only be called an invasion from i. S. I. S, the former al qaeda affiliate coming out of syria. Theres local support, but significant numbers of foreign fighters, people coming out of syria well armed and trained, wealthy, able to by their allotted things. Thats a serious problem, no doubt about it. There are hopeful signs, a best of times, worst of times situation in iraq. And i remain more hopeful about the elections. I agree with my friend that 2010 looks more promising, but bringing together maliki and alawi who will never reach an agreement, bringing them together in a deadlock tie threw away an opportunity for a working Coalition Government moving forward. 2010 was more hopeful. The fact that you say a lot of violence you see in iraq was because of syria. There was a concern that this is, in some way, because of the syrian war next door. Theres a lot of anger at the current iraqi government. I think its inaccurate to call the violence in iraq an invasion, its been clearly a response to political realityies on the ground in iraq, and, in fact, every time you have seen a ground swell of violence, its been the direct response to some political move by the Prime Minister, and the Iraqi Security forces. If you look at this most recent upsurge of violence in which militants will occupy fallujah, it was the direct response to the Prime Minister sending isf forces to shut down the protest camp in ramadi, and the Prime Minister arresting controversial sunni and killing his brother in the protest and over the last few years against senior sunni politicians leading to protests, they have been stormed, that has led to violence. Undoubtedly i. S. I. L. Is strengthened by the presence of networks in syria across the border. They are operationally strengthened for sure. The roots of the violence in iraq are domestic and solutions are domestic. Lets talk to the Prime Minister. His name, Nouri Almaliki, the head of the state of law and Coalition Including his open party. Hes the incumbent Prime Minister. He is seeking a third term, assumed office in 2006. Maliki spent 24 years in exile. He spent years in iran, and syria, and that explanation why malikis government has good relations. Ill go back to you. Is it assumed that maliki will win again . I think thats the most likely outcome, which i think is really depressing. I think theres a glimmer of hope that there are a range of parties that did well in the elections, and demonstrated a capacity to work together. They are sunni parties, shiite and kurdish. If the opposition parties can overcome the many differences and put together a credible candidate for Prime Minister, it would be a promising move for iraq, and could reopen a path towards reconciliation, and could forge a credible way in which the violence in iraq could be confronted. Do you worry that its dangerous if the Prime Minister wins a third term here . How much do responsibility does he bear for the violence and corruption in iraq . Theres no question that corruption is rampant. Everyone is involved. No ones hands are clean. As to the violence, i just disagree with my friend. Theres i hope shes wrong, essentially her contention is that the sunni citizens of iraq are going to turn to violence and terrorism every time they dont agree with the political outcome. Thats the belief of some very, very hard core shia parties. I refuse to believe that. I dont i think the sunni citizens of iraq in the main want to be part of a peaceful unified iraq. The reports that we get are simply that the fighters are extremely skilled. They are not parttime sunni citizens, they are hardcore fighters fighting against hezbollah. Do you not worry that the country is on the brink of a civil war, as many fear . I dont. There are more forces holding the country together than pulling it apart. At the root of this is money. Iraq has plenty of money to throw around and buy its way out of the problems. And the problems are in the center and the oil is in the north and the south. Perversely everyone is incentivised to stay together. Lets talk about the money. Iraq many may be surprised to know is one of the Worlds Largest oil producers. So what needs to happen from the government to see more of that wealth shared among the people of iraq . Well, that is the Million Dollar question. I think confronting corruption in iraq that will take a long time. The problem is what you are having in iraq iraq developed into aneconomy where political pat rop im, jobs patronage, jobs and bribee is entrenched and it is not something that will change even if the government is ousted. Its become part of the d. N. A. Of the society, of the government, and its a huge problem, one that is recognised and have citizens have a problem with. It will take a Strong Civil Society movement when iraq has the stability to host such a movement. It sounds hopeless. Dug, do you agree with that assessment . Unfortunately she and i are in violent agreement. No matter who wins next time, for wherever reason, we can blame the bathists. The years of sanctions, for whatever reason, we have a real problem with core ums, and perversely now, the institutions that have been put in place, the commission on integrity, the various inspector generals wield such power and are so easy to use in you know, in erroneous ways, accusing your neighbour of corruption. Honest iraqi bureaucrats are afraid to move ahead and spend money in legitimate ways. It is frozen, and someone waiting for a bribe, other parts of the money is tide up, because the honest bureaucrats are terrified of making a mistake and being corrupt. Theres a huge concern of the violence. Nearly 4500 american soldiers, by the way, died in iraq in 2003 when the u. S. Invaded and america pulled out. The exact numbers is unknown. Numbers are put at around 130,000 people. By the way, since the war ended, 18,000 iraqis have been culled in the past two killed in the past two years. What can the government do to try to stablilize the country and end the bloodshed that we see . I think theres a real problem now. You have an Islamic State in iraq and syria that is a real entity out in the borderlands between iraq and syria. Running from the outskirts of fallujah to aleppo. They have bases, training camps, and finance ears. And for whatever reason we decided that the United States is willing to tolerate these al qaeda affiliate camps or former al qaeda affiliate camps in the deserts of western iraq and eastern syria. When you consider the new Prime Minister, whoever that might be, even if its not almaliki, is anyone equipped to take on the Al Qaeda Affiliated group i. S. I. L. . Yes, i think theres a possibility that they could. I think what needs to happen is the very radical violence professional core of the Al Qaeda Group in iraq that doug refs to, i think needs to be isolated and needs all the support that the regular sunni population in western iraq needs to be stripped from that group and they need to be isolated. Similar to what happened with the awakening movement, where u. S. Forces allied themselves with sunni tribes who turned on al qaeda, and who isolated them and ended up joining Government Forces to decimate them. I think a similar thing could happen. That was a huge job to calm that part of the iraq in 2007. Do you think the government can do this now. Do you think the United States could have a role moving forward in all of this. So the u. S. Has a role to play. I think the australia can play a role in brokering a Credible Coalition that brings together sunni, kurdish and shiite Political Parties in the aftermath of elections, i think as long as the Collision Coalition has a significant presence that can work with the tribes can be successful. The u. S. Approach is to throw limited weaponry at the problem, we know that is no military solution. The u. S. Learnt it the hard way. Its time to put the lessons we learnt into practice and help to guide the government to defeating fallujah again, and we learnt how to do that. Especially since you had a key role in iraq, doug, do you think the u. S. s job is largely done there . I think the u. S. Still has a role to play. Im dubious that the u. S. Can play a significant role in government formation. The iraqis will elect their own representatives, and once the votes are counted, they are going to put together a government formation. The good news is that several parties are talking about putting together a crosscutting coalition in government formation. State of law has openly hinted that they are looking to alive with sunni parties like mutlokcs and the coalition and pull in a kurdish partner to make a Coalition Government that can assign the ministries and pull together in a way that the counter unity government can not. The american roll is largely military, providing weapons and perhaps assisting with air strikes in the we were desert and Eastern Desert of syria. Iraq faces a big week.
