And with a small now he's on the ball well while an incredible Champions League game at Stamford Bridge last night saw Chelsea fight back from being 41 down to draw 44 with i.x. Our senior football reporter was that exhilarating and entertaining this was a fabulous contest Chelsea were 41 down but in a frantic 2nd half spell scored 3 goals in a period where I had both their central defenders sent off in the space of just 10 seconds after Glinton dealt with departed penalty and a James gold medal for 4 but still there was more drama as pillar question or thought it worth it for Chelsea with 12 minutes remaining but the rhetoric after consulting his pitch side monitor disallowed it so v.a.r. Had the final say after the ball hit Abraham's hand in the build up a precious point for Chelsea Nevertheless in a very tight group as a result leads towse 11 points in group h. With i.x. And Valencia the top 2 will reach the last 16 here's the Chelsea boss Frank Lampard it's tough you know the through the lens again the 1st game here you get yourself because of energy in a draw even of course after a decent standard differently but I think it was always going to be quite tight because there is a feeling that things can take points of each other so we're in it we're never going to go now we certainly have a lot of work to do and must focus on that for what is the holders Liverpool went to the top of Group a with Napoli being how would one won by the song spurred the reporter good vantage with a 21 victory over gang Alex Oxley Chamberlain scored the winner last year can plop knows it wasn't a great performance on his team but they did get the 3 points the most important thing we want and nobody is injured at all or part. Good morning to tell of to close stores and a few others as prime art looks to break the u.s. What can m.l.s. Do to break its bad run with all the mother mother cash upset to close as well we'll have a look at what strategies are out there to get a spending in store also m.p. Say the English Football League should apologize to Barry talked about the March that football club so often on my kids were kicked out of the league in the summer we have the latest to rail strike Boeing as well more news there and making. Where we find out about the Italian billionaire who wants to buy a biggest high street chemists boat and take it private wake up some money. And. I will also going to be talking about engineering we've got the chief executive of the Royal Academy of Engineering with us later on the show. Is the boss there oversees that and we're going to be looking at what you make of a job in amp engineering What does engineering mean to you because it seems seems there's an issue in the industry even still fails I something we've said many times but even still there's an issue that an image if you search online for engineering usually turns up with a picture of a bloke in a hard hat says the role of engineering and that's not what engineering is no not all is and there's also. A problem you know engineering is perceived that why I put you know young young women from to join in the industry as well show you know he has got an image problem and it needs to resolve to get the best talent so let us know if you work in engineering if you. Engineer in your title whatever it might be if you are a relative if you're a parent of somebody who's looking to get into engineering What does it mean to you let's try by the end of the program to try and figure out all the different meanings of what engineering is these days this is a skill shortage to make he says need to get more people into the industry dominated by men you look at the stats 12 percent of people in the world of engineering are women and then another measurement diversity only 9 percent of black and minority ethnic ethnic So there's there's an issue about getting people tempted into that world so let us know what engineering means for you tell us your job if you work with somebody in the industry tell us what they do 55 I wake up to money will figure out exactly what it is by the end of the program we're also going to be looking at Variety retailers that have been doing a lot of talking I mean that retailers do a lot of talking this time of year Mickey because they are trying to figure get themselves in places where the money right after Christmas and also it can be the crunch time of year as well and so take Mothercare for example discussing it now for a good few days but it looks like that with those stores will close it's officially gone into administration says $79.00 stores around the u.k. . 2 To Not 1000 jobs in store most of them part time then you've got jobs at h.q. As well another 300 jobs there give or take has been reported so all of those jobs very much at risk now as the stores close and you know alongside that you've got prime are making headlines today a prime market faith in the High Street in the sun they're looking to break the u.s. . A Marks and Spencer amidst all of this it's still there it's still making money but without quite the enthusiasm behind it from shoppers that it seems to once have here 7 I am will get out of here figures the the city is telling the expect another fall in profits and a continued decline in the fashion business and that's where it's crucial because the fashion saw was the profits growth for many years that's not been the case for a long time and you know and we get on a stage now where they should they be divested themselves of fashion full stop Remember it's going to be the 1st set of numbers since the company was relegated from the Footsie 100 short while ago you know who would have thought that a couple years back and it does fail every time they make an announcement whether it's just an update on sales or profits are for half the year you know would you expect that's that's the terrible thing. You seem to do in terms of the numbers and you just wonder are they going to say something massive as a strategy to try and turn that I've got a strategy have we talked about Marxism and strategy so we look at variety of strategies what is it about Mother Care prime Mark M.N.'s that means they're all heading the way they are at the minute if you've got a thought let's now of course hash tag wake up the money if you want to get into their body out so I can get into an engineering the use of scientific principles to design and build machine structures and other items including bridges tunnels roads their calls and the buildings he says so it's quite physical that Simon is that the is that the traditional way of viewing engineering or is that is that what it is these days any software engineers out there let's know what you do and it is too short. Isn't bad Kingdom or no of course yes. Very nearly like a. Never expect anything from a center can be said about Rico He's on in Singapore electrical engineers civil engineer management engineer manager. What's a management engineer when it's. Well a management engineer is when you become a management trainee in the huge multinational company that's a very popular course right now in some Asian universities interesting So yeah there you go so you feel the knowledge use your science. Sciences math all put together. A management trainee or eventually end up a c.e.o. C.f.o. Or a c.e.o. Of a huge conglomerate or they get. Something else that we've been having to explain a lot of the money out of a recent months is the company Soft Bank Oh yes said it mentioned many many times actually in the u.k. Yeah businesses in the u.k. They own a huge software semiconductor company called Arm Holdings one of the most successful businesses sometimes and full of very good engineers as well but just why we talk about Soft Bank today we mention them with. The. So how is the company doing this this this soft bank business investment business what well it's also Sun which who is Japan's richest man and of course Soft Bank is known. To invest in what you call unicorn companies companies that have a market value of over $1000000000.00 send many of them haven't been listed yet in any of the stock exchanges so. 5 they're listed in Japan and they'll be reporting their quarterly numbers till September and this is quite historical because they are about to report their 1st quarterly loss. In 14 years where you are going to have been making money. Richest Man if he keeps Chuckie money away dog has been I mean so bank throw money everything and. Companies are just. Produce a profit Well that's right it's a but they've made a lot of money in companies like Ali Baba It's like the largest e-commerce company in China it's owned by one of China's richest men as well so they've made money here but they've also lost money in the likes of we work. Of course everybody knows about we work they drop plans for a share sale recently earlier this year they were worth what $50000000000.00 u.s. Dollars and now the new cash was infused by soft back a couple of weeks ago and now the market value says worth $8000000000.00 us dollars So I mean that's a lot of losses there for muscle Yoshi sun and according to Bloomberg Shawn and Mickey the founder of Softbank will see his net worth plunge by about $6000000000.00 u.s. Dollars from its peak earlier this year because of his bold bets on we work and Brit acknowledges Rory interesting to be an investor not change. $6000000000.00 and believable that small obvious quickly Rick has Christmas budget. After in the I'm sorry I won't be able to send you any Christmas gifts that's Ok Reiko we'll save on the air miles just next time you hear pop up to sell food and yeah we can exchange gifts that way instead have. In Singapore for us this morning plenty going on Mickey. Boots making a few headlines as well this morning yes talk about the company changing hands I mean it's still a big part of our street on how we got one in the village a lot of people be lost without it on a chat with Kathleen Brooks now from Kathleen I said earlier it's going to be bought by an Italian billionaire going to take it probably but to all intents and purposes probably already is and it's not quite in the stock market anymore yeah exactly and I mean it's already the tally and billionaire anyway say he's yet again taking it private has obviously had this big tie up with Walgreens in the us it has been taken private before that big k.k. Adil if you remember that that was goodness when was that 2007 so I suppose so at the moment we you know exactly but I mean it makes you wonder if the liberty of the original bid to take over it seems as though it's not sitting with its owners as well as it could not perform as well as it could absolutely and it seems I think every time this happens it just gets more and more debt laden that's not good news for the employees it's not good news really for the business either because that becomes you know a large amount of profit have to pay off to service that wins here really is the question here I mean we've already seen. A number of store closures which is a worry if you live in a really. In a religion you're all in you need you hear your medication that sort of thing and that you don't want only traveling miles to get something that's essential to them and that's the problem is it's a network we've already always relied on but it is not my he money or it's causing problems in the natural thing to do is cut costs that's that's what these people job Absolutely and that's typically what happens when things go private Ok or that they have these kind of leveraged buyouts if you like so they take the money out of the company and then they just try to cut costs down to the buy in one area where I think probably is profitable for the it is in the medication side so if they keep their day I think is out of the goodness of their heart for all the elderly customers that can't find their meds anywhere else but I think it's because that that's that's a more guaranteed income and that's much more stable income for base than other areas them the more kind of consumer the bits that we know a struggling just like they are anywhere on the high street so I was private it's on it's on the Nasdaq now after that with we're going to do that now it's going to the same guy taking it back private again and this is the other issue of course I mean yes there is there is a lot of debt timed out you know the fact that a merger is more grain I figure something like $17000000000.00 It's all down to boots I'm not necessarily because Walgreens obviously. But it's probably a hangover from that deal with k k r as well so self has a lot of debt companies in the us typically run with quite a lot of. Less debt and more equity actually so by taking it off taking bits will greens off the. Exchange you will be massively increasing the debt late because when you go into the equity markets you kind of do that as a like for like kind of swapping the debt if you like you're getting your you're receiving money from from from people who buy the stocks instead. Really seems like it like it's one might be any good thing you could say now is that cost of debt is very very low and not just here in the u.s. The u.s. a Cutting interest. Rates as well and I think if you look ahead certainly in the next year altie it's very difficult to see interest rates going up anywhere so this might not just be a history of going of being public and then being taken off the being taken off the exchange but. It this may be something we might see a bit more generally not just it not just in retail companies like these bells y.-t. Here might also be some douche thinks Bootsy shrinking perhaps there's a market there for us but the key to Asia Kathleen Many thanks for that Kathleen Brock said from an over year why can't make a. Community say when you are normally about 6 am in the morning Mickey Mickey stares Well we've got parliament dissolved yet action underway so all through the campaign if you're not awake wake up the money will be helping you get into the issues that matter to business most of us probably don't have the stomach full and that they make sure the side of Christmas that it is an opportunity for there is an opportunity to get that uncertainty out of the right if you construct my decisions I think there are obviously amongst all are to some policies this is a life so obvious that they well I was think it's about time politics stop thinking about the southeast I think about it like oh I do think it's another complication in the business generally just doesn't look I'll. Go Further this is thank you within the past majority of them thank you notes comes in maybe preparing for another deadline and another deadline for most of them it's business as usual I. I. Mickey's awake he was still here dancing around the living room or back room or where from. Wherever we speak to the exhausted Yeah I doubt. You're going to get through the next few weeks Mickey because if people have questions send them into Wake up the money if there's anything if there's policies you think need explaining that little bit more will be delving into all the issues that matter not just a business to individuals who are looking at their finances over the coming months and years big decisions to be made how much will all of these parties policies have an impact on that so let us know your thoughts you want to sense an e-mail wake up to money at b.b.c. Hello welcome to the show we are going to be discussing what it means to be an engineer in 2019 a conversation Mickey that is kicked off on social media paper may get into the since you started talking about it about. Whether it is the fact you search for an engineer engineers jobs online the Royal Academy the bench. Oh dear I'm going to be talking to the chief executive there a little later a concern that all you see is a bloke in a hard hat shorn in Bristols bit into saying I've got an official software engineer title at quite a few places I've worked at I've never like to use this title engineers need qualifications Richard says to children with master's degrees in chemical engineering daughter now an i.t. Consultant so on a chartered accountant problem doesn't seem to be attracting people to engineering but keeping them lack of exciting and well paid graduate career opportunities. I mean it's all about me you think of engineering and stuff. Engineering. Speak well what when Rico mentioned management engineering. As another form of using your skills and putting them to use Clark got into saying that definition of Engineer including management is a corruption of the name it's the same fashionable nonsense that allows anyone to call themselves anything let us know your thoughts are on the start maybe you work in engineering yourself it is true like Richard Darby says there's not enough exciting jobs or is the industry not selling itself well enough I suspect it's the latter if that is the case let's sell it this morning let's hear some of those exciting jobs in engineering that are out there we're trying to get a feel for what it means what your idea of an engineer is we're going to be discussing that with the the boss of the Royal Academy of Engineering we've got Kathleen Brooks with us today as well director at Minerva analysis looking at everything from the retail sector to what's going on in the in the Boeing of our problems this morning as well Kathleen morning to you good morning engineering was ever something before the investment world called I have to say it really was and that was that was not my calling maybe my view will change but I barely know what it is if I want to let's explain. Well you're going to have the one of the most senior engineers in the country alongside you very shortly Kathleen so maybe get it get it was like Yeah we'll see what's going on in s. Mothercare prime Art let's talk about all of those make do with a bit of engineering Yeah just to show when you you look you know you look at general sectors yourself if you just look at the retail sector and in the space of a couple of days you see Mothercare prime Mark and m.m.s. Big talking points what do you make of it all is there one running theme Well it's the latest right there the latest batch of kind of bad knees really it is definitely going through a massive change it feels to me a bit like the media did about 10 years ago when people didn't quite realize recognize that things were changing and that they need to harness things to make major change obviously you know primal have all considered one of the bright lights everywhere but it but even then the backlash against fast fashion it's hitting him primal which is quite interesting I think when you go m.m.s. Well it's been quite interesting this time is that the management have typically been quite upbeat even when sales have been very very low. But what's quite interesting this time is that with the new management team they've been really prepping the market for some weak results and saying that their strategies have just failed so even management don't know how to turn things around m. And s. Well let's delve into a few of them individually we've got some Chambers who's the retail correspondent with The Sunday Times with this is well Hello Sam morning busy week for you is this they all are at the moment quietly at least you've got a whole week you know to get stuff sorted for a Sunday paper is that is that how it works yeah that's fair enough so we're going to be looking at m. And s. In a moment just wondering Mothercare this is something you've been following for a while anyway they're now going into administration appointed those administrators 79 stores will close in the coming weeks and months which is not good news for those nearly 3000 jobs at stake overall what is what has been the mother care story for you when you've been reporting on this. I mean Mothercare been it's a combination of being battered by different you know competition on different fronts and then on top of that you've got you go to a store stay which hasn't really had the investment in the love it needs to be able to compete with you know Amazon on the one hand obviously a lot of the products Mothercare have sold over the years a commodity Ice-T. Can easily buy them from a variety of places so Amazon are sort of you know fight them on on convenience and pricing in the supermarkets or so it sort of obviously delved into their product areas and compete very keenly on price with them as well so they just they were left without really a position in the market and then you Lare on top of that so the challenges that affect the house that room terms of stubbornly high you know this is raise rents stuff and costs going up and it's just a classic sort of terror that's a perfect storm of factors reading some might say that is like me it's been this in the wrong strange way he's been left behind it'll be left beyond Alinda in it he's been left beyond by the competition for you know cheap goods and getting them there the following day I mean he seems to be in a bubble and even is just past the point yeah that's right and I think you know it's sort of a shame it feels like this a missed opportunity that they could have gone harder and sort of services for some others and being real destination as a new parents and that sort of thing but I thought maybe there wasn't really a reason to go there and there's those on top of those sort of broader set the courts you say management teams over the years haven't really crossed and that's without this that's I mean the one hope I think is they've all been trying to sell the stores without getting much interest but there should be some interest in in that brand that it will probably live on in some form or another in the u.k. But it's hard unfortunately to see a buyer for that many stores but let's have a look at m. And s. Now as well so Martin's hands are going to be updating everybody on how it's done in the 6 months to the end of September and. Probably fair to say that expectations aren't as high as they used to be you could say that these will be the 1st results since m. And s. Was dumped out of the $4100.00 in September which is a move that many people would have you know just laughed out a few years ago and it's a predicting another fall in profits and continued decline in the important fashion star that's where the deterioration started 20 years ago and that's where the real problems are but like for like food sales are expected to rise a little there's been a bit of a hiccup on the way with food sales and that would return to growth after more than 2 years and talking of store closures I mean yes as previously said it is going to close 100 clothes stores by 2022. And some people Sam are expecting some kind of big announcement from m. And s. Again today I just wonder what all those things you you mentioned with with Mothercare do you see any lessons what gives you optimism about m. And s. That hasn't been there for the Mothercare if any at all. We're going to you know it starts from much much stronger place than Mothercare you know that the headlines are on and the message been negative for a very long time and with good reason but this is a business that still still propped will mean no pretax profits they're going to be expected to be down around 20 percent but they're still be $176000000.00 in the 1st half of the year so it's not it's not a business in the sort of distress that the mother carries and I think on top of that as well you have with m. And s. As there is a will that have a cliche but there's a will for it to succeed there is there's a brand that people still have a lot of affection for particularly older generations but I just honestly frustrate customers on on clothing really by just just getting it wrong so much of the time. That the business really is sort of the how much of it can be split into 2 arcs you you've got the food business which looks looks like it's going places again really the problems there it's nowhere near as much. Broken business this is the clothing business which needs to be really reengineered and it's not just the stores that do as well it's the supply chain behind the scenes it isn't fit for purpose you know and us spend an absolute fortune on this fully sort of automated warehouse which is constantly breaking down it means they can't get the good products in the stores and when they have lines that are really hit with customers they can't get enough into the into the shops and it's distracting for the management it's a drain on time and resources and that sort of a big part of what hold in the back as well when you say breaking down do you mean literally physically breaking down or is it just it's not a system that's working for what they want to do in store that someone who used to work there described it to me is like having a Ferrari for the school run and on top of that I was in a reliable one. So it's it it does break down and they are consummate And you know maybe this week they'll come out and say we're getting on top of it we're turning the corner but this is a big part that Joe McDonald who used to run this business she was let go early this year she was in charge of fashion basically she was in charge of fashion she was a she was a very surprising hire given that she never worked in fashion. And you know it turned out it didn't work out but part of the reason she was that guy was because she couldn't get a grip on on the supply chain and she she couldn't sort of you know making improvements needed to and whether the problem was with her or the supply chain I guess it is anyone's guess but but it's a big big problem for the company didn't they tell that with a colored eye I see months ago so that's on the food side yeah the well what are you going to deliver this am because I can understand I'm enjoying not delivering all the supermarket groceries but I mean if food isn't like that is it so there to sort of prepare for this partnership which doesn't launch until September next year m.m.s. Is broadening its food range that's bringing more grounded products and producing more of its own and it will also deliver some Mikado ranges as well they have. Access to so it's becoming a social market Yeah so that turning the food business into a much more sort of fully fledged food business. And that's part of what the a card it was a bow is giving them that sort of online capability because that's a big chunk of that market now. So the food business is you know it's increasingly looking like something which is investible on its own right and this sort of you know leads a lot of pundits to to speculate that the business may eventually be split into 2 and you know spin off one from the upper. You've got a clothing business which is in decline but it's still generating cash it's still profitable but it's it doesn't get investors excited because it's got lots of problems but business and there probably will be some positive noises from the company around food this week this morning story now there's a diversity was underway as well that they'll be keen to get out there I guess as well and Kathleen I just wonder some mention in there you know splitting off the 2 businesses would that be something that would raise a few eyebrows in the city. Of course it would right because it's the way things get the way you know its history of course it would however the way things are going I think it would probably be welcomed what's quite interesting is on the other side of things you've got prime Art He's actually part of this a seated fees group so combining fashion and food can work maybe not in the way the m. And s. Does Mark Ashley a part of fashion so obviously I know now he's saying today actually Mackay in the paper's sports director said it will not rescue any more distressed retailers until politicians introduce better protections for shareholders facing losses from collapse companies so be argue that Marks and Spencer isn't distressed Yes it is a profit making companies they could be a good move for Mike Ashley there compared to what he's bought in the past that has not made profits when we complained and they're like yeah yeah you start out don't tell anybody else and I saw some Chambers thank you we'll leave you to go and investigate that Mike Ashley buys M.N.'s a story that Mickey's made up off the top of his head what he would do. Be an interesting one who knows from the Sunday Times retail correspondent right let's talk Barry now showing where we spent. Was it a 4 wake speaking to fans of Barry football club looking at the finances everything that went on around that has ended up with Barry being kicked out of the Football League and M.P.'s who have been looking into this have come down hard on the English Football League there's been a lot of recommendations that would change how clubs were run 125 years they were in the league until August after the honesty of Dale failed to provide evidence that he had to carry the cash to support it and they were then booted out and Mickey immediately even during the Oprah whole process before they got booted out M.P.'s were playing a lot of attention to this what are they saying now near This is the Digital Culture Media and Sports Committee which in the c.f.l. Should apologize and compensate star players for loss of earnings because it failed to enforce its own rules he said that the e.f.l. Had multiple opportunities to intervene but did not do so in an effective or timely enough why they want reform of the fit and proper test for directors they want to prevent clubs from borrowing against assets like stadiums as Barry did now the a.f.l. Of told us the responsibility for what happened to Barry lies with the current and previous owners of the club he's anything here actually going to change We've got Daniel Plumlee who's a senior lecturer in sports business management at Sheffield Hallam University Hello Daniel. And there anything here that sounds new t.s.a. Yet this stadium what would be the new addition I suppose if that were to go through the other 2 in terms of the financial recommendations around the salary cost management protocol and what will create his role and the fair and proper persons test I've got a record performance that they're not need to be reinforced so they have to take some blame with that as we said at the time I think the new one there. On the list is is the borrowing against fixed assets which you know has never been kind of looked at in that way before it be interesting to see if that recommendation goes through on a really tough in football because it's not an unusual business practice but I think if you look at a football club you know we only really as want to fix the assets and that would be the stadium essentially a training ground to London space around the ground so it's not an unusual business practices companies to do that as we know but in football it would make a big difference with the stadium they in the main asset but the way the regulation of football words to extend the reach of regulation is this committee of M.P.'s have no influence over directly what the English Football League should do and how it manages its clubs does it no absolutely not and not been one of the sticking points for a number of years on no there's been calls for independent regulator bodies that's a great idea in principle but just kongsi it working in practice in that way football is adamant and I think you know you've actually called it that the regulations are designed by the a.f.l. And the Premier League as well they all men the vote so is the clubs that vote for them so the cook they have some say and the cloaks you know are responsible in some way supporting some of these regulations through so well about the case it is really still you know and this recall mentions around the s.l. Reinforcing their own regulations will yes absolutely they showed that not in the past so it would take a huge reform and I'm not so sure that there will be any independent regulator body anyway really it's all quite right what you signed by your sign the rules are. You know they're applied once you've broken them whereas what the Falcons v.m.p. Should be designed doing is action is a regulator to make sure they don't break the rules in the 1st place in other words even on what they're doing Yeah absolutely and this and this is always the way isn't it is really such a sad situation that we're talking about this now off the back of you know a football. Collapsing and there was a lot more equipment before the a.f.l. To keep an eye on the account the club's director send in the accounts before they're in the public domain. And the f.l. Projected budget for the next year at least so that they can say that they can continue trade in in the case of Barry that didn't happen for several weeks and several months and they still didn't step in and that was part of the issue there so those regulations are there is as I've said they're not really in force and it's really tricky isn't it and you know if you look at walk in yesterday and in another sport with the sinuses example we see there are real you know strong strong penalties breaking regulations albeit you know a salary cap and not a we don't have. A really tough penalty there and I think you know that because definitely the health and the Premier League to do more of the back of this as well you're pretty stark on all of the back pages Saracens 35 point deduction. 5000000 pound 5 year that's I mean that is a real jolt to your plans for the next season and those after Dan thank you Daniel Plumlee there who's a senior lecturer in sport business management at Sheffield Hallam University a few of the stories dinner as this morning one to do with Boeing a former quality control engineer of Boeing has told the b.b.c. The passengers flying on board the company's 787 Dreamliner could be left without life saving oxygen if the cabin were to suffer a sudden decompression So this is one of a number of allegations which call into question safety standards of the company Boeing insisted aircraft a bill with the highest levels of safety and quality undergo rigorous inspections before being delivered to customers that is yet another one we've talked about been a few times this week. Another one there anything else or well actually say anything else front page of Daily Mail this union strike Yeah I was just looking at that this is the realm time and Transport Union and it's about a dispute Southwest. The user has no choice but to take industrial action over Christmas and New Year he's announced 27 days of strikes in a dispute over triangles will be heard that one before well yes 600000 passengers a day South Western Railway carries So if that goes ahead to that extent he's going to have a very big impact the biggest operator going into law and the more to lose says the mail there and Philip Hammond the conserved Chancellor until 4 months ago he's standing down as an m.p. 22 years after clashing repeatedly with Boris Johnson over bricks it plenty doing the rounds today and plenty of discussion from Wake up to many listeners about what an engineer is the Royal Academy of Engineering says the idea of an engineer is a bloke in a hard hat is something that's being reinforced online and that puts many people off getting into the industry we've got Dr high art and with us is Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Engineering morning to you good morning and Michelle Hicks is a roller coaster designer at Chessington World of invent adventures hell of a shell. Of an engineer Michelle Yes absolutely I'm trained as an engineer engineering can take you into so many places for me I happen to be well Ok such as I am which is a very exciting so we've had lots of people get into it and it doesn't necessarily have to be a physical thing to do it is not to be oily rags I mean how do you and dirty in a new job do you need to do that as an engineer these days absolutely no it's one of the biggest misconception that is the role of an engineer can be so very safe for me I can vary from going sort of to design team meetings basically complex problem solving so that goes for the meeting room to actually being out on thought when you're on site is an engineer for me it's very much looking at what's going on it being built. Cation it's not taught it's making sure we're actually building what we want to build the doctor said we found out this morning where we have a very very clever bunch of work of the only listeners with a variety of Engineers we've had to get in touch from Martin in Kent as a geological engineer he says some kind of hybrid between an engineering geologist and a geotechnical engineer all the all these different terms we've had other people get is saying my 2 kids have both got engineering qualifications and neither of gone into engineering What is the issue there yeah so actually engineering is a great foundation and you're really employed Well if you're an engineer so it's not surprising that people who study engineering or university or college go on to work in other areas and that's great Actually we need people with a Skills want to cross our economy but we also need enough of them going into engineering and that's why we've made today the 6 inventor this is engineering day gives us a chance to celebrate the engineers who are shaping the world around us and also for people to discover more about what engineers and engineering really look like say Michele is a great example of someone who may not spring to mind when you try to picture an engineer and you know there are just so many different sorts of roles I'm glad that there are some amongst your listeners other sorts of roles engineers playing plead really important roles in health care we've got fantastic engineering in this is engineering campaign called Alan and he works on surgical splints to help people walk or we've got someone else called in us who are a chemical engineer who helps to develop clean energy solutions to power hospitals and schools in developing world engineering is just so varied as Michelle said Dr Salem It seems I've been having this debate for years know an r.v. Angst as a going into engineering that women have been put off by the grey strike sort of approach that the industry seems to have. I mean does it pay enough is that what people look down on well that the data show that actually it's a well paid profession if you look at the kind of salaries that grant is entering get both when they join engineering and over their lifetime but I think you're quite right to call us out on the fact that this is not a new challenge and I guess what we're trying to do through this is engineering and in particular this enduring day is to do something different to tackle this longstanding problem and one of the things that's different about this is engineering day is that we've managed to get an amazing coalition of over 100 organizations including I'm delighted to say the b.b.c. But also including organizations like Facebook and i.t.v. And Carter and Amazon Network Rail and we're all coming together to try to really get out there and challenge these outdated perceptions of engineers and engineering so that more people from all backgrounds start to see a future for themselves in these great careers interesting just putting their fear of these messages together without Sir Richard said he had his 2 children masters in chemical engineering they went into i.t. Chartered accountant Andrea says she's my daughter study in Mechanical Engineering University the 3rd of her course my it's a female so a do you think the position about the male. Famous abilities changing she loves it wants to be a car desire but then Clarke says the definition of engineer. When you look at it is said Money talks we're short of Engineers yet they don't get paid as much as accountants So is it not necessarily about the image people are going into it but you can't retain them well that's not the evidence and there are problems about retention in particular areas and I think when we look at all lack of gender diversity for example we need to recognise that there is a an attrition rates of people get you know we don't have enough going into engineering the 1st place and then they're not necessarily staying for the duration of their full career but actually there you know when you when you look right across the data you see the engineering is on average or well paid career and of course there's variation depending on which types of role you go into but I certainly don't think that it's all about the money. And for lots of people actually when you look at surveys of what motivates people to choose careers now you'll see that wanting to make a difference wanted to do something very creative so that we could see the future you know those are some of the real drivers that underpinning their career choices and happily for us those are all things that are associated with engineering Well it definitely sounds like a description of Michelle's job as a roller coaster designer Michelle How did you end up as a roller coaster designer What was it that made you think that was for you well when I was growing up for me to theme parks and go on roller coasters was always thought the highlight of my year so it's always been a big passion of mine and it was actually when I was I was 14 at the time I believe and I went to a lecture on roller coaster design with my dad and he actually saw advertised and it was that magic moment when I was listening to these engineers talking about what they do building roller case and I thought oh my gosh a 50 incredible career option for me and something I need to pursue and that's really kind of what sparked my interest in engineering and made me look and question because I realized. That me showing it seems to me there's there's an awful lot of from players and a lot around at the moment we need more rollercoasters I think it's not only rollercoasters it is Entertainment Design I think that's the key and that comes into so many different types of experiences not only rollercoasters and I think what it is it's giving people a place where they can go and have fun with family and friends and when we live in a search for a highly pressured world I would say having That is a really important just to let people blow off steam so I think there is always going to be a need for that we've only got 20 seconds Michel but what's your favorite ride or Nemesis or Towers Rhapsody favor old. P.t.c. Set b.b.c. Radio. B.b.c. Radio going to news at 6 o'clock morning on James Ray. States members will continue debating the budget for 2020 this morning yesterday's discussions focused on air links to and from the island as our political reporter Linda King Corn explains yesterday's debate was solely focused on air links to and from the island as well as a look at the future of a Rini an amendment by deputy Mark dory to withhold subsidies to the Heathrow's link until a coordinated government framework was in place was defeated but other coups by Deputy daunting due to broaden the scope of the review when it is carried out was approved what can we expect today well Koos to put up the price of alcohol by 10 percent rather than 5 will be put forward by deputies Jennifer Merritt and Deputy Rick sound and steps to go all up wants to promote the development of brownfield sites over greenfield sites by introducing disincentives for the development of greenfield sites plenty to go out but of course these are still just the amendments at least another 10 to go before debating on more general issues around the budget starts Barres Johnson will launch the conservatives election campaign today following an audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace to mark the dissolution of parliament ahead of the launch the Prime Minister's compared Jeremy Corbin to the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin saying that the Labor leader has a shared hatred of Wealth Cure creators. A u.s. Debt diplomat has revised his testimony to a congressional investigation that could seek to remove President Trump from office Gordon Sumlin the u.s. Ambassador to the e.u. Says he now remembers telling Ukrainian officials that u.s. Military aid likely hinged on a political inquiry sought by Mr Trump he previously denied that delaying the payment was politically motivated Joe Ruben is a Democratic strategist and said the revelation will be shattering for Republicans defending the presidency poll who are watching this closely. And. Confidant and $1000000.00 donors have looked on the president and essentially stablish ing black and white this congressional inquiry that there was a quid pro quo the Royal College of Psychiatrists say that Hafitz of still to reduce the number of mental health patients and in the treated for all from home the Government's pledge to end the practice by 2021 but the college says nearly 750 patients a month still travelling too far. An investigation by b.b.c. Yorkshire is found that information provided by private groups that hunt paedophiles was used to prosecute suspects more than 250 times last year Freedom of Information requests was sent to every police force in England Wales Northern Ireland and Jessie Phil Hogan is from one group based in West Yorkshire and said they're protecting children this is all about saving kids let people know lives next door to instal So I think it's a big achievement you know the amount of convictions with the paedophiles we call even if we have caught one I think that's a massive achievement I think it's amazing what we've done and you know will carry on or for the passage down you never know 10 years time where over the more groups out there we don't begin to restaurant started a new scheme to encourage the use of more like approaches. To Port has begun growing local eat local campaigns create a menu using gradients farms growing or producing gansey some drowned the owner of the restaurant says when you use local ingredients it makes a huge difference you know it's a passion of. Grain gradients and the fresher the better I mean if it's growing on your own doorstep it's going to be fresh it's free that's gram of care as well and if someone's going to take the time and effort a vegetable for example they're going to look after that vegetable and it's kind of different to the mass style production where it's just about results and that's you know a bit the yield and the value of that you know in sports off the back of a strong run at the World Championships and earlier this year is beginning a new training regime in Cardiff with 2020 on the horizon the gansey run will be training under former Olympian matter less and Sharma says an optimist are optimistic about improving upon his peepee with his new coach you may but me they just sort of are you know consistent block of months where you're not really in there and. Really you know if you get all that behind you like good weather and your body.
