Kristin feisty what do where does it come from the dead of a show that I've got children Paracha who's telling me their original meaning of feisty is to break wind no wonder Helen dislikes I don't know if that's true at all I mean are we calling our Sauter feisty I was I don't know I think I would object I think that would go to day ssion I think what it is that this why is there a commonly associated in an insulting way if they are the opposite of what is expected of that agenda so what the Web feisty is doing and that is I think she was talking about her role as Catherine the Great was talking about you know a woman who actually steps outside of the norm of being amenable pliable etc and actually talent is those conventions and I think she's actually right in a way to point out of course we wouldn't say feisty man because if I say a man is expected to be powerful to challenge conventions etc So it is and a way it's not just reflecting the way we use language but also the way in which we use language also shapes the way we think about things we've got lots of research that shows that this actually works in workplace it's you ations where women who are leaders are expected to be kind and caring leaders and if they step outside of that they get insults that bossy rather than assertive I've got a 13 year old girl who's constantly being told that she's bossy rather than she has leadership potential kind of thing and my sons were never told that thing so it might be a kind of fun kind of thing oh yes let's just make fun of people and call them feisty but actually does reflect sort of gender stereotypes that run a lot deeper than that but also interesting the way you explain it you know we say oh you wouldn't call a guy you wouldn't call a guy feisty because as you say there is a kind of assumption they are going to be all of those things so there would that's within their nor. So would the equivalence be the guy to say oh he's a very soft hearted Yes I mean we see this we don't we talk about career women and working mothers we don't talk about career men and working fathers and actually this again does have an impact this isn't very interesting is that it shows that men are much less willing to admit that they have family and caring commitments and that they have that work life balance thing going on and we do know that women are bearing the double burden and to actually attack challenge that and we know that that leads to gender stereotypes in the workplace but it also is directly attributable contributes to the gender pay gap so in order to challenge that we need to see more that it's Ok for men to be caring and fathers and it's Ok for women to be leaders and dominant and of language is those kinds of attitudes reflected here so in some ways I mean there are there are words I mean I've got a long list here that you know clearly have insulting comment connotations bolshie but she doesn't really say that you know bright sell a public of a you know the you know they're clearly within a realm a judgment is being imposed but take the word ambitious which I think is interesting if you were to apply that to all she's very ambitious there might be a bit of a kind of sideways swipe here as you say it is very ambitious that I get it would be understood differently wouldn't it would and if you acted this and again this very interesting research on this in job interviews that looked at the way in which people right qualitative assessments of how people perform in job interviews and ambition associated with a male candidate is seen as a positive attribute an ambition associated with a female candidate is seen as a negative attributes again I don't want to harp on this but it's not just the way we talk with that actually reflects the way we think and the way we act so it is something about you know if we actually start questioning these the assumptions behind the become very very.
