More details in about ten minutes. Its monday the 26th of october. Our top story. A Navy Special Forces unit has stormed an oil tanker off the isle of wight after a suspected hijacking. Seven stowaways thought to be nigerian nationals have been detained after they were reported to have threatened the crew. Andy moore has the latest. Late last night, and the tanker andromeda was back under the control of its crew after what the ministry of defence called a suspected hijacking. 16 members of the special boat squadron, based at nearby poole, were landed on the ship as night fell. Defence secretary ben wallace said. What is good to see is the reaction from ourforces, the coordination between our agencies. Number 10 would have been fully involved in what was going on. This is a good outcome for britain. The drama began yesterday morning as the ship prepared to enter the Fawley Oil Refinery near southampton. Seven stowaways believed to be nigerians are said to have become violent and made verbal threats to the crew. They retreated to a safe place on board the ship. There are few official details from the ministry of defence, but its understood several military helicopters landed heavily armed troops by rope onto the deck of the ship. Faced with overwhelming force, the stowaways are said to have surrendered almost immediately. This was a very efficient operation. It only took nine minutes from the word go to the stowaways being rounded up and identified. And, of course, this reflects the training that both the fleet air arm crews and the sbs the special boat service undertake all the time. None of the 22 crew of the andromeda were injured in the incident. The seven stowaways have been detained. Andy moore, bbc news. Ministers are continuing to insist they will not fund School Meal Vouchers for children in england during the half term holiday despite calls for a re think from some conservative mps. Scotland, wales and Northern Ireland have already introduced food Voucher Schemes. 0ur Political Correspondent Jonathan Blake joins us from westminster. Good morning. So. Will the government change their minds . There isa government change their minds . There is a lot of pressure out there. Good morning. There is a lot of pressure. It does not seem that ministers are in the mood to change their minds at the moment but as we have seen Marcus Rashfords campaign has proved to be incredibly effective already so far this year and the government was forced into a u turn earlier on in the year. They make the point, ministers, just now, that a couple of things have changed since then. Firstly they have increased availability payments under the universal Credit System of benefits, and also the government has given something in the region of £60 million to local authorities in england to spend in support of families who are struggling. That is why we have seen some already provide a food Voucher Scheme, some issuing food parcels, although some councils are already warning the money is running out or has run out. A couple of indications this issue is not going away now half term has come here in england. 870,000 people and counting have signed a petition by Marcus Rashford online to get the government to change its stance. Labour are saying they will force another vote in the house of commons if the government does not change its policy, and there are a number of conservative mps who themselves are very uneasy about the way the government has handled this and also some saying there does need to be a rethink. Last time mps voted on this, the commit won carefully, just a handful of tories rebelling. They would not want to put that to the test again. Thank you very much. We will have the Health Secretary at matt hancock here at 7 30am. Meanwhile Marcus Rashford has been given another award for his work on the Free School Meals campaign. Weve been following the story of 80 year old paul harvey the former music teacher living with dementia whose skills on the piano turned him into an internet sensation. Using just four random notes, paul created a melody that inspired the bbc philharmonic to turn it into a full orchestral piece. And yesterday paul heard his creation come to life for the first time, as Graham Satchell reports. Notes play. There is your four notes. He sings the notes. It started with just four notes. Paul harvey, whos 80 and has dementia, improvised a tune that went viral online. Good spells of sunshine later. In fact, most of the showers will clear by the end of the afternoon. Breezy throughout, it will feel chilly, highs of 12 to 14 celsius. Overnight tonight we have got the wind dropping out a little bit and clear skies. That will allow temperatures to follow it again. What a year its been, and to finish like this is unbelievable and quite unexpected. Leicester city continued their great start to the premier League Season with victory over arsenal. We will be speaking to damon hill later and sir Dave Brailsford. Damon hill later and sir dave bra ilsford. Lots to damon hill later and sir Dave Brailsford. Lots to packing for you today. Its time now for our regular appointment with a breakfast gp dr ellie cannon joins us now. Good morning. Thank you so much for joining us. Just briefly, you wrote a letter to the Health Secretary, with lots of different concerns. What particularly is worrying you at the moment . Its really important that if gps are able to talk about their experience on the ground, because we are often the first people to see signals and trends and what is actually going on, and particularly i wanted him to go to know what myself and 65 other gps we re to know what myself and 65 other gps were seeing in terms of Mental Health waiting times, in terms of local facilities closing down, Health Waiting times, in terms of localfacilities closing down, when we are told nhs is open. My patients who have shielded for six months, who have shielded for six months, who are now very frail and have not been having their physio, not for getting out for a walk. There are a lot of these what we call non covid mac harms which have been going on during restrictions and during lockdown. That we dont feel are being quantified. And they are really important as part of the pandemic response. You talk about patience, for example, suffering heart attacks . Thats right, yes. There is data on that. A hospital colleague of mine collated more than 100 Research Papers talking about different harms that have resulted in the last few months. And yes, there have been a lot more Heart Disease. Thats been published in the data by the british heart foundation. We have seen a lot more Heart Disease. For example, as a gp i would normally be able to ask my patients to have an ecg as a walk in the service, so just as an outpatient, they take the form with them, they go along similarly with a chest x ray. Whereas now, finding our patients are waiting a month to have that service. That is a very, very long time to diagnose Heart Disease or something the matter with the lungs. And this is leading to disease and death. Were looking at various things today on the programme, but there are rumours that the gold might be looking at shortening the two week quarantine period if youve been contact with somebody with covid. What are your thoughts . I think this is very sensible, certainly from what ive seen on sensible, certainly from what ive seen on the ground. If people are in contact with someone with coronavirus, they tend to develop symptoms within about four to five days. The data shows that some people may take a bit longer, but generally speaking, the majority of people will be caught by a seven day window. And you have to add that to the fact that we know now that the 14 day quarantine is so long that actually, many people are just not doing it. Infact, actually, many people are just not doing it. In fact, the majority of people are not doing it. So weighing up people are not doing it. So weighing up the pros and cons, it is better to make the quarantine time shorter, have the majority of people on board with you and the chances are we would only miss very few cases. Thats really interesting to hear your point of view. The nhs once people who have recovered from coronavirus to donate blood plasma. Why is that important and what difference could it make . It is incredibly important because plasma is rich with antibodies. We have talked about antibodies a lot in terms of testing. That is how we fight infection. If you are severely u nwell fight infection. If you are severely unwell or if you are frail and you have covid and you are not getting better, its very hard for your body, for your immune system, to make those antibodies to mount the response that it should often get overwhelmed. By undergoing what we call plasma transfusion, which is like blood transfusion, you are effectively giving somebody else the antibodies from somebody who has recovered, so its almost like you are giving them their boost of the immune system. So that gives them that start and that in effect that can help them to get better. Ive already seen that in practice. I have a patient who has had this and tha nkfully have a patient who has had this and thankfully has recovered. We know that we need men to donate their plasma, particularly. So absolutely i would encourage everybody to do it. And in fact, i would encourage everybody to do it. And infact, i i would encourage everybody to do it. And in fact, ithink i would encourage everybody to do it. And in fact, i think matt hancock has done that himself. Very interesting. Thank you very much. Doctor ellie cannon. Our division two match this afternoon, a true top and bottom affair, with the home side leyton orient, bottom of the Second Division at the moment, entertaining the visitors from tyneside, newcastle united. The score, Manchester United 1, west ham united 1. In time he graduated to presenting the bbcs live sports flagship, grandstand, on a saturday afternoon. His ability to remain calm, whatever came his way, was especially valuable. Thank you very much indeed. Im losing control of this programme he always seemed to have a twinkle in his eye. Here he is with miss world. Im quite improperly dressed. Everybody here is wearing a black tie and im in a lounge suit. Even the cameramen are better dressed than i am when morecambe and wise gathered top bbc presenters for the 1977 christmas show, bough was one of them. It attracted one of the biggest audiences ever on british television. In the studios they celebrated. And when the bbc won the race to launch Breakfast Television, all winning smiles and casual jumpers. Its 6. 30, monday. He was the obvious choice to front it. Youre watching the first edition. A consummate live broadcaster, loved, known and respected by everyone. Which just made the news of the worlds revelations in 1988 an even greater bombshell. Frank, family man, sober and serene, respectable and upright, turned out to be anything but. The embarrassment was heightened by a recent series of the holiday programme, in which his wife nesta had joined him as they toured italy. Youve now got me on tenterhooks because i know youve always wanted to come to siena. Are you disappointed . The bbc sacked him. He worked elsewhere. Here he is on commercial radio. And they invited him back to the beeb to reminisce about the 1970s. And then it was a time, that decade, when you could get people to say, wow, look at that, you know, because suddenly we had colour. I mean, can you imagine, black and white . Then people said, wow colour but frank bough, the bbc front man, became a distant memory. There were more tabloid stories and eventually the work dried up. A sad end for a master of Live Television. Werejoined now by ron neil, the bbcs former head of news and Current Affairs, who was franks editor when breakfast time launched. Thank you very much for being with us thank you very much for being with us this morning. Lovely to speak to you. Good to have you on the programme. How would you remember frank . Well, i thought your resume was perfect. It summed up all the brilliant things he did across his career. Grandstand, notan brilliant things he did across his career. Grandstand, not an easy programme to present. Three hours of Live Television with open top mic and easier, very difficult, yet he did it so smoothly and elegantly. Then he went on to nationwide, which at that time was attracting an audience of 10 Million People. But frank was one of those people, i use the phrase, the camera liked him. He came through the camera into people plasma combs. People felt co mforta ble plasma combs. People felt comfortable with him. He was uncle frank. They were at ease with him. We felt he was the obvious person to present the first Breakfast Television programme. I was very against the idea of having desks and frank ina against the idea of having desks and frank in a suit and tie, so we had of the red sofas, as you have today, and wanted a relaxed atmosphere. Again, frank was perfect at six oclock in the morning to present a relaxed, easy going, welcoming atmosphere. And so i remember all of that, just as your Video Tribute has said. We are just seeing pictures with selina scott and nick ross. We will be speaking to nick ross later. He said frank was behind all the jumpers as well, trying to make it less formal . Yes, absolutely. And it got to the stage where people at home were knitting jumpers for him. Quite a number of cardigans and jumpers used to arrive in the post most days, some of which he could not wear. Of course you said it was a perfect resume of his career, because i suppose the fact that he was so because i suppose the fact that he was so clean cut and had this sort of perfect public image, which is why it was such a shock when those revelations came out . It was a shock. I dont know the veracity of truth of what the newspapers published, but yes, its very sad that as we celebrate today the mans life in television, that sadly, that has to be mentioned as well because it was an issue at the time. But as isaid, we it was an issue at the time. But as i said, we had parted Company Professionally by them, so i dont know the voracity of it. So yes, pretty sad. In an interview i heard with frank boffey in later years, his concern was that people would remember that rather than the man who was, for many decades, one of the most famous people on tv . Thats the most famous people on tv . Thats the risk, isnt it . The tendency to remember only the bad news, the negative news. And there is so much positive to say about frank plasma career, which im glad to see you are reflecting this morning. What made him such a versatile and dependable presenter . Something in nick will say later, when that those we re nick will say later, when that those were having a panic around him, he was always relaxed . Well, you would appreciate presenting a three Hour Programme like grandstand with open top mic. To the viewer is watching, that means there is somebody speaking into his ear throughout the programme. And he manages still to carry on talking sensibly and articulately. Thats a really great skill. As i say, i use this phrase, the camera liked him. He came through the camera at home and you felt comfortable having frank bar for in your home. You felt he was a welcome member of the family. That is not something every Television Presenter can do. Take us back to that time when breakfast time launched. There was a lot of pressure, competition from other channels as well . Well, the first thing to say is a lot of people did not think there should be Breakfast Television. Some people even described it as immoral, the idea that the television is on at six oclock in the morning, thats disgusting. That view was also held in parts of the bbc. There was a fairamount of in parts of the bbc. There was a fair amount of opposition to the notion of Breakfast Television. Bbc hesitated for years as to whether they should do Breakfast Television. Then itv, tva, decided it was going to launch Breakfast Television and the bbc realised it had to do the same. And so we got on the air on the 17th of january, 37 years ago now, in 1983, and we were on air first. There was an awful lot of scepticism over whether it should happen at all. Wrong, what will your abiding memory of working alongside frank b . Ron. 0h, abiding memory of working alongside frank b . Ron. Oh, the joy of working with a Real Television professional as a television producer. That was the joy. He was easy to work with. Something else that was very important about frank, as soon as you came off that was very important about frank, as soon as you came off the air he wa nted as soon as you came off the air he wanted to hear what your criticism or your applause was for the programme. He wanted to know whether a programme had gone well, whether he had done interviews well, whether he had done interviews well, whether he had done interviews well, whether he had got it right, whether he had got it wrong. He was was examining his own performance. That is the sign ofa his own performance. That is the sign of a true professional. Thank you so much for your recollections. There are some who still think it is immoral to get up at this time of the morning we really appreciate it. We appreciate of the red sofa, thank you. Still going strong. It is standing the test of time. Ron neil. Carols got the weather from the beautiful grounds of Arundel Castle in west sussex. You will not be able to see what we can see, but we have got a lovely shot of the castle from a drone. They called glorious day, the looks of it . Youre absolutely right, as usual. Good morning, everybody. It is stunningly beautiful here at ahron young castle in west sussex. That shot youre seeing shows it off. Where we are, we are right next to the stew pot, so called because in days of your the fish from it we re in days of your the fish from it were taken into the priory and into the castle, into the kitchen, and used in fish stew. This has been newly renovated to the splendour it is now. It is a haven for wildlife. We will be talking more about that through the programme. We have got some little showers here at the moment with some mist. The forecast for this week is certainly mixed. Rain at times, windy at times as well. They will be some sunshine. For some, by the end of the working week, it is going to turn that bit milder. What is happening today is we have got low pressure in charge of the weather. You can see the isobars around that low pressure indicating it is going to be quite a windy day, particularly with exposure in the north and the west. Along the English Channel coast as well. There are showers in the forecast. Some have them already. They will continue through the morning, especially in the north and the west, and across the channel coast line. Some of them will be heavy, potentially with some thunder and hail. Through the day we will see some of those showers move towards the east. When will be a feature, as i mentioned, especially with exposure, and temperatures ranging from about ten to 14 degrees. As we head on through the night, low pressure builds, killing off many of the showers. Patchy mist and fog in northern areas, by the end of the night at the next frontal system coming in from the west bringing rain and strengthening winds in across Northern Ireland, wales and south west england. It would be a chilly night, particularly in rural areas, chili and a dry start to the day across central and eastern parts. It wont be long before the rain in the west migrates towards the north east. The sunniest skies will be in the Northern Isles for the longest. Behind that rain, brighter skies return as do heavy showers. Again with the potential for some thunder and hail. As we head on into wednesday, once again it is a day of showers. Some of the merging, especially in the west and the long channel coastlines. It is also going to be windy, 40 mph plus. For the rest of the uk they will be some showers. Equally, a lot of dry weather as well. And even some sunshine. On thursday back to square one. Rain from the west, pushes north east. The weather this week is certainly topsy turvy. All over the shop. At least we got a lovely shot of the castle. The governments Job Retention scheme comes to an end this week, after supporting peoples wages since march. Vishala has been looking at how important its been and whats set to replace it. Hi everyone, good morning. Lots of people might be worried this week about furlough coming to an end. Good morning. Yes, back in march the government for the first time in history stepped in to pay peoples wages. The furlough scheme has been the biggest and most expensive response to the Coronavirus Crisis to date. Nina has been taking a look at the numbers. Today, i can announce that, for the first time in our history, the government is going to step in and help to pay peoples wages. I am placing no limit on the amount of funding available for the scheme. We will pay grants to support as manyjobs as necessary. Back in march, theJob Retention scheme, orfurlough, made history when the chancellor stepped in to save jobs. 80 of wages would be paid by the government to employers who were keeping staff on. At its peak, more than nine and a half millionjobs were furloughed, costing the government almost £40 billion, the biggest and most expensive response to the crisis. Its a lifeline. Its always been my wish that we would be able to look after all our team and continue to pay their wages. But while we have so little income coming in, we simply wouldnt be able to do that without the scheme. But about the freelancers, the self employed or those who just started a job . In all, its estimated around three Million People were left out, left behind. People in my situation need some money from you. We need financial help. Its not available. Dont make me beg for it. You didnt make anybody else pay for it. Why are you making me beg for it . Its not fair, for gods sake. The scheme is now ending, but the pandemic and its Economic Impact are not. One and one half Million People are out of work, and more are expected to follow. What happens now . Well, thats a question that many of you will be asking this week what help can i get now furlough has come to an end . Well, from november 1st, the governmentsjob support scheme kicks in and will run for six months. So, from sunday, if you work for a business that has been forced to close, this new scheme will pay 67 of your wages, all covered by the government. Thats up to a maximum of £2,100 a month. But where does this leave workers and businesses in other areas that are open but less busy due to restrictions . Well, if the business you work for falls under this category, the government will pick up nearly two thirds of your wage, and your employer will pay 5 of it. But to qualify, you will have to work and be paid for a minimum of 20 of your usual hours a month. You also should have been on the payroll since the 23rd september, but companies that have made staff redundant since then can re employ those workers and take advantage of the scheme. Hospitality, accommodation and leisure firms in tier 2 and three areas will also get grants on top of this. The government says around 150,000 businesses in england could benefit from these grants. So lots to take in. Lots of numbers. Hopefully people can go through it all with a fine tooth come to see if they qualify. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning, im alice salfield. The number of people relying on Unemployment Benefits in london has more than doubled since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. In february 3 of people in the capital were claiming thats risen to 8 , with almost half a Million People here now receiving state help. The worst affected area is northumberland park in tottenham, where we filmed at a local foodbank. People are going to now become unemployed, and people are going to now become affected more by the covid, because its now going to start kicking in. So i imagine this is just the beginning. So were going to actually see an increase. And so people are going to be wanting to get food, more. Londoners are being urged to seriously consider the dangers of holding fireworks displays in their own back gardens. The warning comes from the fire brigade and plastic sugeons, as coronavirus restrictions have forced organised events to be cancelled. Its feared an increase in diy displays could result in more accidents and serious injuries. Almost 500 fines have been issued to people not wearing face coverings on public transport in london. Since the 15th ofjune its been mandatory to wear a mask or face a £100 fine. Transport for london said most passengers were obeying the law but that it would take action against the selfish minority. And on escalators on the underground more than 200 uv light sanitising devices are being installed. It follows a successful trial which found they improve sanitisation levels on handrails by at least 50 . Lets take a look at the travel situation now. The overground has severe delays because of a fault on the line between Norwood Junction and new cross gate. That issues also affecting southern and thameslink services. And on the roads the m25 is slow clockwise in surrey betweenjunction 5 and clackett Lane Services because of roadworks. Now the weather with sara thornton. Good morning. A chilly start, particularly in the suburbs this morning. Temperatures in the mid single figures at the moment. Its generally dry to start off, but as we go through the coming hours weve got some showers to push towards us from the west, particularly across london and the south east middle part of the morning to the lunchtime period. Good spells of sunshine later. In fact, most of the showers will clear by the end of the afternoon. Breezy throughout, it will feel chilly, highs of 12 to 14 celsius. Overnight tonight we have got the wind dropping out a little bit and clear skies. That will allow temperatures to fall away again. In the suburbs it could be as low as four, maybe even three degrees, to start off tomorrow morning, with some early sunshine. But i have to say it is an unsettled picture. Some long spells of rain to move in through the morning, particularly persistent in the afternoon, and it will be windy. Further showers on wednesday, longer spells of rain on thursday, but as you can see, its much milderfor friday. And if youre still travelling on the tube at the moment, you might be interested in a video on our facebook. Its about the scientists testing to find out if theres covid 19 on the underground. See you in half an hour. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Our headlines today. Special forces board an oil tanker and detain seven stowaways after a suspected hijacking off the isle of wight. Frank bough the original host of breakfast time and the face of the bbc for decades has died aged 87. And as government ministers continue to insist they will not fund free School Meal Vouchers across the half term holiday, this is the food that is being donated by one community in leeds to feed children this week. Good morning from Arundel Castle, where we are right next to the stew pond which has recently been renovated to this beautiful scene. The weather today, well, is looking showery, especially in the north and west. Along the south coast. Those showers will travel eastward through the day with gusty winds. I will have all the details in ten minutes. Number 10 would have been fully involved in what was going on, indeed. The government has come under pressure on the issue following a high Profile Campaign by the footballer, Marcus Rashford. Scotland, wales and Northern Ireland have already introduced food Voucher Schemes. Our Political Correspondent Jonathan Blake joins us from westminster. Good morning to you. Our minister is likely to change their mind on this . Well, half term is here in england and it seems as if the government is holding firm in the face of continued pressure led by Marcus Rashford and his campaign to extend free School Meal Vouchers to all children throughout the holidays and into next year. It is not, though, without some significant disquiet on the conservative backbenches. Many of those are, i think, frustrated with the government. Firstly that it hasnt handled this particularly well, has not got its message across again that it is helping as ministers would see it disadvantaged children. And some calling on ministers to make a u turn. The government makes the point, though, it is spending £63 million, going direct to local authorities in england to spend on families who are struggling. Many are putting that to use with food vouchers or food parcels and also the government has increased the universal credit payment up to £1000. So, as i say, the government is holding out for now. Labour say they will force another vote in the house of commons if there is not a change in policy, andi if there is not a change in policy, and i dont think the government would want to put that to the test again. For the moment, thank you. Retailers will be meeting with the Welsh Government today to clarify the ban on selling nonessential items in supermarkets. More than 60,000 people have signed a petition calling for the restrictions which have stopped people buying items like clothes and toys to be lifted. Were joined now by our correspondent tomos morgan in cardiff. Hopefully you can hear us ok. Lots of pictures on social media over the weekend of polythene covers over things like books, stopping people from buying them. Yeah, been loads of pictures and videos on social media from disgruntled members of the public. Going to the shops like this behind me, not able to buy things like toys, baby clothes, children close, normal clothes, books, because i also have been closed and items have been covered. Its been done, the Welsh Government say, for two reasons. First of all in fairness to Small Businesses who may be only sell toys, for example, who have had to close during this period. But also to limit the reason people might go to the shop during this period, which of course is another lockdown in wales and the whole point is to stop people from mixing and potentially catching the virus. There is a valid restriction of coronavirus to do this. However, people are still disgruntled. Last night that first minister told me the rule would not be changed but he would be clarifying the situation with supermarkets later today. 0k, thank you. Thats the latest on that situation live from cardiff. Meanwhile Marcus Rashford has been given another award for his work on the Free School Meals campaign. The Manchester United forward said he is extremely humbled to receive the pride of britain award and said he will dedicate it to those who have helped their communities during the pandemic. Frank bough, one of the most recognisable faces on Bbc Television for several decades, has died at the age of 87. Bough made his name presenting sports programmes including grandstand and nationwide. He was one of the original presenters of the forerunner to this programme, breakfast time. His family confirmed he passed away in a care home on wednesday. Frank bough, who died last wednesday at the age of 87. And well be joined by some of franks former colleagues throughout the morning including nick ross who helped launch Breakfast Television. Its time for a weather update from carol. She is at Arundel Castle and we can see it as the sun rises above the castle. And carol is in the grounds. Good morning, it looks lovely. Good morning. It is beautiful here in west sussex this morning. You can see Arundel Castle in all its splendour and it is a chilly start, but the sun is out. Whats the difference that extra hour has made and here, where im standing, is right next to the stew pond. You can see behind me that lovely boathouse at the end. That was built using sourced timber from these words. The gate on the other side was actually used earlier on for a gangway. Its really quite spectacular when you see it. The other thing that is beautiful is watching the mist just other thing that is beautiful is watching the mistjust rising off the pond this morning, but if you are stepping out bear in mind it is rather chilly. It is a haven for wildlife, as well. Swans are here. The couple came and nested here, had their cygnets, and you see the cyg nets their cygnets, and you see the cygnets just swimming up and down. They are quite big now, of course. They are quite big now, of course. The weather for this week is looking rather unsettled. We are looking at a rain at times, it will also be windy at times, and there will be sunshine at times. By the end of the week it will also be mild, especially so in the south. But this morning there are a lot of showers. We have got them in the north and west, some across the English Channel coast lines and through the day they will migrate eastwards. Some will be heavy with a chance of thunder and also some hail. Equally between them they will be some sunshine. Gusty winds particularly with exposure in the west and also the south and our temperatures to 40 degrees. Through this evening and overnight once again we have a ridge of High Pressure building on, killing off a lot of showers, but by the end of the night there will be a new system bringing rain across Northern Ireland, wales south west england. It will be a chilly night with patrick mist and fog particularly in parts of the north. Tomorrow we start off on a drying note central and eastern areas but it wont be long before that rain already in the west drifts north eastwards. Behind that we will see brighter skies but equally a plethora of showers, some of which again will be heavy with the chance of some hail and thunder. Driest conditions for the longest will be across the Northern Isles. For the rest of the week it does remain u nsettled. Rest of the week it does remain unsettled. Thank you very much for that. There are shops of the cats lie beautiful. I take it in the 8am to 9am hour you will be storming the castle, will you . Laughter i will be storming it for a brew, i think i bet they do a nice brea kfast think i bet they do a nice breakfast in there. Thank you, carol. Hundreds of businesses, charities and some councils in england have pledged to help Vulnerable Children during the half term its after the government decided not to extend meal vouchers in the School Holidays. Yesterday footballer Marcus Rashford who has campaigned on the issue tweeted a map highlighting the many places around the country offering free meals. Danjohnson is at a Community Centre in leeds that has also promised support. Dan, good morning. One of the many places that has responded to what Marcus Rashford has been tweeting over the last few days. Absolutely, yes, good morning. This is since vincents on the east of leeds and this is the food that was donated as of friday. This will be packed up and sent out to children across leeds this week over half term to make sure that they are fed because the government is insisting it will not extend the free School Meal Vouchers that it extended over the summer to make sure children were fed. Lets chat with francesca, who is from Leeds Community foundation. How important is this food, this support, sheena . Based in east leeds and a hungry child is a hungry child regardless of their background and circumstances. How many either . We are feeding, at the peak of the summer, about 1500 meals per week. A massive need just in this area alone. If you can do this, people are so generous to alone. If you can do this, people are so generous to donate this food and you can hand it out, does that not solve the problem . Is the government not right to not extend the voucher . This is the third year we have done this. They need is got near the not going away out the needis near the not going away out the need is not going away. We need a long term solution. Need is not going away. We need a longterm solution. You see this right across the city . We do indeed. There is over 28,000 children on Free School Meals here in leeds and since lockdown that has increased by 2500 people, 2500 children. There is a huge need. It is really important for us to Work Together. Charities and local Community Groups like since vincents are working with schools, working with council across the city to make sure we are supporting them. Its more thanjust food, as well. What would you say to the government . They are saying they will not extend vouchers for the holiday this time. Do you think they should . We think its really important that everyone pulls together and if that means Free School Meals can be supported as pa rt of school meals can be supported as part of that, it would make life easier for so many children and their families easier for so many children and theirfamilies in easier for so many children and their families in leeds. Thank you for now. We have a technical problem with the microphone so we will leave it there. As you can see people here have been generous, donating food. There is growing pressure on the government. People calling for them to do government. People calling for them todoa government. People calling for them to do a u turn and to extend the vouchers for this holiday. Thank you. Apologies for the problem with the microphone. Were now joined by the childrens commissioner for england, anne longfield. Good morning. Thank you forjoining us. Good morning. Thank you forjoining us. Lets go back to the main point about this. How much of a difference can it make to a child to get a Free School Meal . Well, a huge difference. We are talking about 2 Million People living in households where there is not the security of having assurance they will be food in the cupboard. And what parents have said about the extension of this into holidays over recent months is it gives them the chance to be able to buy decent food, to plan and know they have food in the table. In terms of the pandemic that is the basis of what you want as it parent. There are millions of children this week that will be relying on these are fantastic effo rts relying on these are fantastic efforts by volunteers to bring round food parcels. In the long term it is government that needs to make the changes. You think it is government that should provide these meals during holidays. Well, i think first of all that government needs a plan to reduce both poverty and food poverty. This is why it is happening. It is almost that food is the last line of defence for poor children. There is a bigger problem behind this. But the food voucher system has been working well over recent weeks and months and it can be easily rolled out. There is clearly a n be easily rolled out. There is clearly an agency around this. There isa clearly an agency around this. There is a need to roll out the vouchers or, if they want to, find a different way to get food that gets directly to children because that is the beauty of the vouchers. We know they are going directly to children. But in the long term they need to be a food plant and a poverty plan because this is not going away. A third of children are living their lives in poverty and that is something which is not in any way going to help any of their life chances and indeed will be a very negative aspect in every aspect of their lives. The government, as you will know, says it is offering support in other ways, increasing welfare support by more than £9 million £9 billion. Council is getting 63 million families facing financial difficulties. But you would like to be more targeted, would like to be more targeted, would you . More direct. Of course all of those things are true and we have seen fantastic creative schemes such as the furlough scheme, which has had amazing results over the pandemic. Also seeing government being generous earlier in the Effort Funding for holiday schemes. There isa sum funding for holiday schemes. There is a sum of money going to local authorities but it all gets tied up then in processes, distribution, bureaucracy. Some children might be 0k bureaucracy. Some children might be ok with that. Some might not. The beauty of the scheme is it gets directly to children for school meals and the hot meals they need. There will be children who are desperate for that help and that is something that really makes this a very urgent priority for Boris Johnson when he gets to his desk today what do you make of the campaign by Marcus Rashford . Very much top of the agenda because what he has done. He has done a remarkablejob. A he has done. He has done a remarkable job. A young he has done. He has done a remarkablejob. A young guy. He is saying this because he knows the experience himself. He knows what this has meant to him. So he is able to speak from the heart and the experience and also help those stories of other families. He experience and also help those stories of otherfamilies. He has been amazing. The campaign from cafe is around the country has been amazing and of the volunteers, as well. Truly inspirational. I think what this has clearly shown is that asa what this has clearly shown is that as a nation we want to help kids. And we want to help the kids that are hungry and the most vulnerable. That is a clear message, i think, to government and parliamentarians who might be in any doubt. There is a problem here, it needs a solution and this is what the public want. We know the government made a u turn on this earlier in the stomach, at least. Are you expecting that to happen . Well, i hope there will be a solution and i hope there will be a clear commitment to provide food during School Holidays but we should not get to u turns on this. We can all read the statistics, we know it will get worse in economic terms over future months and years. There needs to be that Long Term Plan that anticipates this as a problem but also has a mission, really, to help those children who need it most. That is what levelling up really is all about. In scotland to the government is making available, continuing to fund Free School Meals over to next year. In wales until easter and in Northern Ireland it will run over the half term break. In parts of the uk, children will be getting those meals. Thats right. We are out of the step with the rest of the uk. It would be unthinkable that children in this country would face christmas without the food they need during this pandemic when others around the uk have got the support of their government. So there is a task he had a task ahead for government and they need to quickly make a Long Term Plan and also help children during the holiday period. Thank you very much. In about ten minutes we will speak to matt hancock, and presumably we will talk to him about that. First time we have spoken to the Health Secretary in a couple of weeks, so lots to talk to him about. Elsewhere this morning. Seven stowaways thought to be nigerian nationals seeking asylum in the uk have been detained after they threatened crew on an oil tanker off the isle of wight. The liberian registered nave andromeda has now docked close to the Queen Elizabeth cruise terminal in southampton following a ten hour stand off. We can speak now to former Royal Navy Warfare officer rear admiral chris parry. Good morning to you. I know there is not much detail about the exact nature of what took place, but give your assessment of the response by the special forces. Well, i think if you undertake an operation like this, come in by air, helicopter, rope down and round everybody up in nine minutes, that is a pretty good operation by any standards. Given the variety of unknown factors in the variety of unknown factors in the situation, it is a really good job. Give us an idea of the mayday call, which came sometime on sunday morning. How difficult, what sort of things are you thinking about when organising a mission like this . First of all, you have to accept that we are in the uk territorial seas so that we are in the uk territorial seas so the jurisdiction belongs to the police. The armed forces have to be asked by the police and the civilian authorities and the guys of the government in this case. All during the day, of course, you start to collect intelligence both from the ship and the surrounding area. You look at the conditions, the weather and everything else. You look where best to conduct the operation and in the background you are preparing the Assault Force. That is normally comprised of two merlin mark for helicopters and two wildcat helicopters. The merlins either to transfer the 16 troops of the Assault Force and the wildcats are there to cover the two merlins as they go in. This is a routine operation for the special boat service which they practice all the time. And if called upon can do it at short term notice. Time. And if called upon can do it at shortterm notice. As you say, a routine operation. Obviously there are things that could potentially go wrong and yet it is all done within nine minutes so really it sounds like it went perfectly. Indeed. You have to do a lot of reconnaissance and operation to make sure that is the case. You have to close down a lot of the variables in the situation. But by and large, if you practice enough, you will get it right eventually and this is a great tribute to that special boat service and the royal navy, of which the special boat service is part. What broader question is does it raise about the fact this happened in uk waters and something we might see a bit more of in the future . A good question. All three this year we have seen need for a safe and secure maritime border and to make sure we have control of our offshore zone. I think we are going to have to see a coming together of all the agencies and departments that are responsible for that, but i think we also have to recognise we are in an age of migration now and this problem will increase and it wontjust be stowaways and migrants in future, it will be terrorists and criminals, and we have to make sure we have a robust intelligence and Security System in place. I think the government has got that in hand, to tell you the truth. But we must make sure that it is comprehensive, we have dealt with all the issues and we do have good intelligence and enforcement measures. 0k, and you said it was originally under the jurisdiction of the police. What happens to these people who have come off the boat now . Do they go through the criminal court, what happens . I think right now they are being questioned by the police as to how they came from lagos to the uk, how they came from lagos to the uk, how they came from lagos to the uk, how they stowed away on boy. That gives Us Intelligence for the future, and if any criminal acts have been committed then they will be prosecuted and i suspect deported afterwards. Chris parry, thank you for your assessment. I know many people have been interested to know exactly what happened this weekend and it has been one of our lead stories this morning. 7 25am. Coming up this morning. This was the moment a former music teacher who lives with dementia heard his composition played by the bbc Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time. Well hear from 80 year old paul harvey after eight. So many people have been. How can i put this . Sobbing into their corn fla kes i put this . Sobbing into their corn flakes it set both of us up at 6 20am. Mary, thank you for getting in touch. I have had my first years of the day. I know the feeling. Beautiful music and beautiful tv to start my week. Sue says, ive never been so moved by a piece of music. I have goose bumps all over. You are not the only one, lots of people in that situation. I love this one. My two year old was captivated by pauls music. All toys down and listened in silence. This is one piece i will be happy to listen to several times a day for the next few months. Taking a breakfrom paw patrol . Lots of people, the fact that paul is a music picture. If you saw Fridays Programme we had lots of tributes from people he had taught and gone on to great things in the music industry, including the lead singer of cutting crew. You see that role of the teacher and they speak about their own teacher who inspired them. If you missed it and are wondering just how magic it all is, well show you the whole thing at 8 10am. It is one of those uplifting stories we need. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning, im alice salfield. The number of people relying on Unemployment Benefits in london has more than doubled since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. In february, 3 of people in the capital were claiming. Thats risen to 8 , with almost half a Million People here now receiving state help. Since the 15th ofjune, its been mandatory to wear a mask or face a £100 fine. Transport for london said most passengers were obeying the law, but that it would take action against the selfish minority. And on escalators on the underground, more than 200 uv light sanitising devices are being installed. It follows a successful trial, which found they improve sanitisation levels on handrails by at least 50 . Lets take a look at the travel situation now. The overground has severe delays because of a fault on the line between London Bridge and Norwood Junction. Its also causing severe delays to southern and thameslink services. And its slow on the north circular westbound through edmonton. And if youre interested in how safe you are on the tube from coronavirus, theres a video on our facebook you might want to check out. Its about the scientists testing to find out if there is covid 19 on the underground. Ill be here in an hour. Bye for now. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Were joined now by the Health Secretary, matt hancock. Good morning, mr hancock. Thank you for spending some time with us this morning. Good morning, how are you . Fine thanks. Lots to talk about. I would like to start with the proposal is about making hospital meals better. What does it involve . Well, we have been working with prue leith and a specialist in hospital food to try and make sure that hospital food across england food to try and make sure that hospitalfood across england helps patients get better. It is high quality for staff and for visitors alike. And if we are going to tackle obesity as a nation, and if we are going to have to make sure that our food makes us healthier, then hospitals are the place to start. There are hospitals in this country where the food is excellent. A really good, really tasty, very nutritious. And i think that should be the same everywhere, so that when you go into hospital the food is pa rt you go into hospital the food is part of what helps you make you get better. Traditionally there have been lots of stories about hospital food and i think that we can do this. I think we can make hospital food excellent. I think prue leith has been brilliant in finding out where it is done well and writing a report and how this can be done well everywhere. And im looking forward to going and launching that with her later this morning. So you are obviously very passionate about hospital food. I am sure that over the weekend you have seen many people are passionate about Free School Meals. That has dominated much of the chatter over the weekend. It seems quite clear there isnt going to be a u turn from the government. Is there going to be more money made available to local councils on this issue particularly . Well, just like feeling strongly about improving hospital food, well, just like feeling strongly about improving hospitalfood, i also feel very strongly about making sure that everybody gets the support they need to have good food. Of course i do. I think Marcus Rashford has really led an inspiring campaign thatis has really led an inspiring campaign that is all about making sure that in all circumstances no child is left hungry. And i think thats right. And i think thats something that we should all get behind. The question is how to do that. And the government has put in extra money to councils so the councils can then go and support those who need that support. And often its councils who know best on the ground. Rather than central golf government. It really reaches the people who need that support. Mr hancock, on that issue of money, even some of your own mps are saying this issue has been badly handled. So Bernard Jenkin has said you misunderstood the mood of the country. You talk about money. The eat out to help out scheme costs £522 million. This would cost 20 million. Could you not find that when you have already spent a large amount on another scheme . Yes, we have put in £63 million precisely to support councils to deliver. I think that the best way of doing this, through the best way of doing this, through the councils who we have been seeing over recent days are rolling out these programmes, who are there in local areas in the community. And who are supporting people and trying to make sure that this gets to the people who need it most. So absolutely we have put in that extra money. Some people have estimated the cost at about £50 million. We have put in £63 million. My local authority in suffolk has received over three quarters of £1 million in order to support people right across suffolk. So thats the way that we are delivering this, including, in addition, in these really difficult times, putting an extra £20 a week onto universal credit, to make sure that people in receipt of universal credit can get that extra support that might be needed because of the many challenges this epidemic resents. You mentioned Marcus Rashford. Im sure you saw the tweet he was putting out over the weekend about various restaurants and cafes, who said they would help. At no point did us Health Secretary think, you know what, maybe we are on the wrong side of this argument . No, because im strongly on the side of all those who have come out to help, they have been absolute to bring in. I was looking at Marcus Rashfords twitter feed and seeing all of these companies coming out to support people who need that extra support. Asi people who need that extra support. As i say, Central Government put in extra money. The councils are stepping up to the plate. And lots of businesses and individuals are as well. I think thats brilliant. I saw that Marcus Rashford said what we need is collaboration, people working together. I totally agree. And making sure that everybody gets the support that they need, you know, whether it is putting in the money from taxpayers from Central Government, or whether it is businesses are stepping up to the plate and making sure that people get decent food. Of course, no child should go hungry, in the same weather that i want to make sure that all patients get good food as well. You mentioned Marcus Rashford. He said he wants a meeting with the Prime Minister. As the Prime Minister written back to him or contacted him, and if not, why not yet . There has been communication between the two as far as i understand it. We have all seen what Marcus Rashford has done. And the way that he has conducted himself in this campaign that he is running is absolutely exemplary. He is making an argument based on personal experience, for the benefit of people who really need that support. And as a result the support going m, and as a result the support going in, notjust from and as a result the support going in, not just from government, and as a result the support going in, notjust from government, but at the community as well. I pay tribute to him. But we have it on Good Authority there has been no response from the Prime Minister to Marcus Rashfords letter yet . Well, i understand there has been communication but im obviously not in charge of the Prime Ministers correspondence. If there hasnt been, im sure they will be. That will be followed up. What we have got to do is Work Together to make sure that everybody gets the support that they need. Lots of other things i would like to talk to you about this morning. Because we havent spoken to you for a few weeks. With regards to where we are on the pandemic. Can we start with the speculation about there being a fourth tier of restrictions for those in tier 3 where the curve fails to flatten . Is that something you are looking at . We have always said all along that we would take nothing off the table. Having said that, since the introduction of the tiered system a few weeks ago, we have seen that the rise in the number of cases has slowed a bit. Now the problem is that it is still going up. And whilst it is still going up. And whilst it is still going up, we have got to act to get it under control, because we know by the laws of mathematics that an exponential growth in this virus would lead to the nhs being overwhelmed and all of the things that we have been working so hard to avoid. I think though that three tiered system we put in place, its much easier to understand. Its really clear for people. And were working with local areas about when further action is needed in any given area. It also means that if you have relatively low cases in your area, then you dont need to some of the interventions that of course are really quite significant and quite onerous. 0k. Course are really quite significant and quite onerous. Ok. You have a nswered and quite onerous. Ok. You have answered the question. Ive said that we rule nothing out, but at the moment of the three tier system is what we are working towards, and it is effective in slowing the rate of growth of this virus, but it hasnt brought that growth to a halt. It hasnt got the curve coming down, which is where we need to see it. What about reducing the length of time that people need to self isolate from, down from 14 days . What are we looking at, ten days, even seven days . Well, that has to be based on the clinical advice. What is the clinical advice . Well, the current clinical advice is 14 days, but we always keep these things under review. I was talking over the weekend, i was in communication with my french opposite number, and have reduced the duration of isolation based on their clinical advice. And so this is something that we are always keeping under review, that we look at. But as of today, the clinical advice is very clear. If you have a positive test you need to isolate for ten days, and if you are a contact, because of the incubation period, you have to isolate for 14 days. And this isolation is incredibly important. It is perhaps the most important part of social distancing, that if you are asked to isolate, then you should isolate, because that is how we stop the spread of the virus. The test and trace system, im sure you saw last week, hit a record low, 59. 6 of contacts week, hit a record low, 59. 6 of co nta cts of week, hit a record low, 59. 6 of contacts of people who tested positive for the disease were actually successfully contacted and told to self isolate. We have spoken told to self isolate. We have spoken to you a lot more. Even though the test and try system has been criticised by a lot of quarters, do you think it is up to scratch . 0h, yes. In fact it has expanded enormously. Even in the last few weeks. It now has reached in total over a Million People it helps to keep us safe and break the transmission of the virus. You have said on this programme before that it needs to be 80 of those contacts of those who tested positive in orderfor those contacts of those who tested positive in order for it to be defective. Currently last week a record low 59. 6 . How can you come on tv this morning and say that it is working when it is not . It is not near where it needs to be to be effective . Well, it is a system that is, as effective . Well, it is a system that is, as i say, constantly expanding, because as the number of cases goes up, so the number of people we need to co nta ct up, so the number of people we need to contact goes up, the number of people are test positive that it had succeeds in getting in contact with is over 80 . Of the contacts given it then reaches 75 of those. Now obviously we are putting enormous amounts of support in to try to help the system get in contact with everyone. Again, a bit like the previous object, working with local councils and the National System together to be able to reach more people. But just to together to be able to reach more people. Butjust to understand the scale of the operation, we are now doing a third of a million tests a day. We are on track to a capacity of half a million test a day by the end of this month. The team built in operation the size of tesco in six months. One of the features of it, which is different to a lot of our international colleagues, is that it is incredibly transparent. We publish, every thursday, over 50 data points on how well it is doing. Its easy to find all of them going in the wrong direction. It is far harder to actually build this extraordinary scale of system that means that everybody who needs a test ca n means that everybody who needs a test can get a test and then that weve reached over a Million People to ask them to isolate in order to keep people safe. And obviously you are constantly working to improve it. I dont think anybody will underestimate the size of the issue, but he caught might call someone in your own party, dido harding. Do you still think she is the right person for thisjob given do you still think she is the right person for this job given some of the statistics i told you this morning . Yes, of course, because i look at the whole system and how it is operating, and its really easy to just. Is operating, and its really easy tojust. When it is so is operating, and its really easy to just. When it is so transparent and we publish so much data, it is easy to pick one individual data point. You have to look at the system as a whole. As a whole in the last two weeks they have contacted over 400,000 people. That is more than double the previous fortnight. And so this is a system that is expanding fast and that is absolutely critical to helping to reduce the spread of the virus. And if you think about it directly, in terms of what we, all of these different interventions and what they are managing to do, in its natural state, without any interventions at all, this virus spreads with an r number of 2. 5 and three. Every individual passes and on average on to 2. 5 people. It doubles every three days. That is what we were seeing in march. We brought the r number down to between 1. 2 and 1. 4. At the moment it is doubling about every fortnight. Now clearly, we need to act to get that down further but all of the interventions, everything that everybody is watching this doing, in slowing the spread. We have to make sure we do that bit more so instead of the doubling time, we have a halving time. We keep this virus going down again. That is what we have got to do together. Test and traces one part of it, but so is the behaviour of every Single Person watching this programme who can all play their part in keeping this virus under control. Before i let you go, you mention behaviour. I wa nted you go, you mention behaviour. I wanted to talk to you about your own behaviour. This is the first chance we have had to speak to you since those rumours about you breaking a 10p own curfew in a bar in parliament. Did you do that . No. And ive said so in the house of commons. The story is not true. Im glad to be able to clear that up. So the eyewitnesses who said they saw you are not telling the truth . No, absolutely not. Ok. Mr hancock, appreciate your time, thank you for being with us. Thank you. It is quarter to eight. It is quarter to eight. Carols got the weather for us this morning in the grounds of Arundel Castle. Every time we go to it it looks more spectacular. I know its cold for you but it is a Beautiful Day . It certainly is here at the moment. It certainly is here at the moment. It is stunning. We are in west sussex, where Aaron Darrell castle is. It is the home of the duke of norfolk. We have blue skies. We have had clear skies. That is where the temperatures have fallen overnight. Iam in temperatures have fallen overnight. I am in the labyrinth at the moment. Behind me you can see the cathedral. It is the cathedral that gives aaron bell its status. You can probably just make out the circles on the grass. This is where 16,000 just make out the circles on the grass. This is where16,000 tulips and also daffodils are planted in preparation for the festival next april. If you plan on coming to the castle this week, it is open tuesday to sunday and then it is closed until next spring. Right in front of me is the what your role, and next to that is the collector plasma garden. It is stunning. The weather is stunning at the moment, albeit a chili. Not necessarily going to stay that way today or through this week. The forecast for this week is u nsettled. The forecast for this week is unsettled. It is going to be windy at times. It is also going to be wet at times. It is also going to be wet at times. It is also going to be wet at times. Rain and or showers. Up at the end of the week it is going to turn milder, especially in the south. Many of us will cease on china during the week. This morning what we have got is low pressure, which is in charge of our weather. If you look at the isomers around that area of low pressure, it is also telling you it is pretty windy. Windy with exposure in the west and also the south. A lot of showers this morning across western parts of the country. Across the south coast as well. Through the day you will find they will travel further east. In between there will be some sunshine, gusty winds with exposure. And behind them, again we will see further showers. Temperatures today ten to 14 degrees. Through this evening and overnight at a ridge of High Pressure starts to build. That will kill off many of the showers. It will be a dry night with clear skies, a cool night. Patti mist and fog forming in the north. By the end of the night our next weather front would bring some rain across Northern Ireland, wales and also south west england. Tomorrow then, we pick up that band of rain. Although it will start dry with brightness across parts of the central and eastern areas, it will be long before the rain in the south west moves steadily towards the north east. Behind that band of rain, once again were going to see a rash of showers, some of them heavy, thundery, with the of hail. Northern ireland the Northern Isles will hang on to the brighter skies for a long list. Into wednesday, back into that mixture of sunshine and showers. Showers almost anywhere during the course of wednesday. And once again gusty winds with exposure in Western Areas in southern areas. As we head into thursday it is more of the same. More rain sweeping in from the south west and careering north east. I wasnt kidding when i said this week is looking unsubtle. It really is. We are enjoying the views. Look at that shall wejust shall we just stay with this for the next hour . morning live is on live after us today, new programme. If youre waking up there youre going to have a cracking day. Holly is here this morning. Holly has got some very important sports news. Really good news . Really good. Two kings in the castle, a double success for British Racing on four wheels and two. A british rider winning the giro ditalia, Tao Geoghegan hart, only the second brit to do that. And Lewis Hamilton breaking Michael Schumachers record to claim his 92nd race victory. In a moment, live on the programme, the boss of Geoghegan Harts cycling team, sir Dave Brailsford. And former formula one World Champion damon hill, who tweeted this after hamiltons victory yesterday. They are both on the programme in a few minutes. For now, football, and Leicester City continued their great start to the premier League Season with victory over arsenal. Jamie vardy came off the bench to score the only goal of the game. Its the first time leicester have won at arsenal in 47 years. Meanwhile, evertons unbeaten start to the season is over. They lost 2 0 at southampton, with che adams sealing the win for the saints. Everton finished the game with ten men, after lucas digne was given his marching orders. Wolves looked to be heading for another three points when rauljiminez put them ahead against newcastle. But Jacob Murphys late free kick rescued a point for steve bruces side. Rangers are now six points clear at the top of the scottish premiership, after a comfortable 2 0 win against livingstone. Jermain defoe scored his 300th goal of his club career, and what a goal it was, brilliantly finished by the former england international. Celtic drew 3 3 at aberdeen. Lots to discuss in terms of racing. Dave bra ilsford lots to discuss in terms of racing. Dave brailsford should be an interesting chat. And damon hill. In fact, interesting chat. And damon hill. Infact, i interesting chat. And damon hill. In fact, i think they are with us right now. Good morning. Gentlemen, lovely to have you on bbc breakfast micra. David, lets start with you. Who is this . Sorry micra. He thinks its brea kfast sorry micra. He thinks its breakfast sorry, go away |j sorry micra. He thinks its breakfast sorry, go away iwould like to talk to you about Lewis Hamilton if possible. How big an achievement is the number of formula 1wins he achievement is the number of formula 1 wins he has achievement is the number of formula 1wins he has now got under his belt . Its amazing. Forgive me if get a frisson when i hear a beaten Michael Schumacher. For a long time we all thought michael was unassailable and lewis had chipped away. Unbelievable. 92. Just doing 92 grand breeze is hard enough, let alone winning them. What has made him so brilliant . I think he was a child prodigy. Ithink him so brilliant . I think he was a child prodigy. I think you him so brilliant . I think he was a child prodigy. Ithink you had enormous talent when he was young. And i think that he has got his natural talent which is unquantifiable. Its very difficult for anybody to beat him. The people who have beaten him have usually, usually he has destroyed his team mates, to be honest. I think ros bragg did beat him but decided to give up the sport afterwards that gives you a clue as to how tough it is to beat him. Damon, stay with us. I would like to bring in dave bra ilsford with us. I would like to bring in Dave Brailsford as well, watching Lewis Hamilton, one of the most recognisable faces in sport. Tao Geoghegan Hart, probably not the same, but what is it like for you to watch him approach the finish line . Well, the race yesterday took about 80 minutes to complete the course. His rivals set off three minutes later. It is one of the longest 80 minutes ive had for a while. Thats for sure. Probably with a couple of kilometres to go it was obvious that he was going to take the win. There was a little bit at the end where you could actually relax and enjoy it. It was fantastic. Take us back to the bielik the beginning of the giro ditalia. He was not even setting out to do that, was he . No, originally he was in the team to play a supporting role to Geraint Thomas, actually. On the second day geraint had a freak accident where he hit a bottle that popped out of somebody elses bike cage, rolled across the road and he fell and fractured his hip, actually, which is very unfortunate. At that point it felt as if it was a real blow to the team. But they bounced back unbelievably well. In 21 stages, 21 days, they won seven stages and then tao won the whole thing. The most successful grand tour we have ever had. It shows you the strength in depth in the side. Did you see that promise in him from a young age, even though he was not front and centre when the event started . Well, he has always been verytalented since he was very young. Hes very dedicated, he works very hard. He has got his feet on the ground and he isa has got his feet on the ground and he is a brilliant racer. That is what i like about a tail. In the end cycling, like motorsport, you can have the engine, the physical engine, but you have to be able to race. And he is a great racer, he really is. He is part of this new generation of young guys coming through and they are racing more aggressively, raising more openly, with a bit of flair and a bit of brache. That has held him in really good stead, the way he has handled himself through the races. The way he thought, 0k, might be able to do this. He didnt get ahead of himself and question himself. He wrote beautifully. He really did. Lets talk about Lewis Hamilton again with damon hill. What happens now, do you think . He has done this, what happens next . Yes, its like alexander the great, there are no worlds left to conquer. He has to tie up the title, of course. He has got six world title championship squad seven is the schumacher record. He looks on course for that. But you know, covid. He has still got to do this one. A couple of more races and he should back the title. Then i think you just carry on as long as you are enjoying it. Why do you think that Lewis Hamilton, you put it in a beautiful context there about the achievement, why does he not get the plaudits sometimes that he deserves . I think that he sometimes said a few things which have come out wrong and maybe people are not sure where he is coming from sometimes. I dont know. It is difficult when you win all the time. I people like entertainment. I think it is very difficult to entertain people when you are in front of the time. But he has entertained us. There is not a single racing driver who does not look enviously at Lewis Hamiltons abilities and just think, my god, what must it be like to be that brilliant. His talent is supreme. And he is a nice guy. You know, he honestly is a nice guy. He just is doing hisjob honestly is a nice guy. He just is doing his job and honestly is a nice guy. He just is doing hisjob and hes a bit bemused himself, it seems, by his achievements. Anyone who heard or watched his interviews yesterday will have heard him talk about the fa ct will have heard him talk about the fact that he is still young, there is still quite a few years left in the tank. How far and how many can he get under his belt if he continues in a good team . Yeah, Max Verstappen is only in his early 20s, he may have to go on until hes 40 because if lewis does, then the records will be so far out of reach that everybody will be raising in their 50s trying to break it. Racing. Kimi rijken and did a fantastic job yesterday, racing. Kimi rijken and did a fantasticjob yesterday, he is 41, i think. My dad stopped when he was 45. People said he was going on too long. Eventually it does go, the sharpness goes. I think you want to go out at the point when people still see how brilliant you are, not when they see you tugging around trying to recover lost glories. Im sure lewis will know when that time is. Dave bray is filled, we get asked the same questions of tao. Dave brailsford. What next for him first of all and how successful could he be . Well, i think what next is it is the end of our season. We start again early next year. I think he will go back to london. Probably spend quite a spell there over christmas, i would spend quite a spell there over christmas, iwould imagine, back in london with his family. And then start training for next year. If he can keep on doing and being the same person he has been until this point, thenit person he has been until this point, then it will take a very long way forward. It must be very exciting from your point of view as well to have summary like this on the team . Incredibly exciting. Weve had pretty good success from british riders in recent times and there is a generation with chris froome and Geraint Thomas, coming towards the twilight of their careers and then bursting onto the scene you have got tao, a young guy called tom pidcock, a whole host of young riders bursting onto the scene. They have got this flair and a bit more panache in the way they rise. Its what we want to see. Very exciting times. I saw Geraint Thomas yesterday read tweeting the tweet from the team saying not bad for a plan band from the team saying not bad for a plan b and salivating as well. Does that mean potentially awkward when you decide top dog next time around . Yes, its always a problem in this sport where you have different people vying for leadership. I think the one lesson from this race, the team dynamic here is absolutely brilliant. And tao put himself out asa brilliant. And tao put himself out as a leader. It was chemistry, perfect between them. That helped them enormously, really. Whether you can replicate that Team Environment and a team dynamic going forward, that will be the big test. Thank you very much indeed, Dave Brailsford and damon hill. As well as damons dog. Thank you. We have done an amazing bit of telly coming away in ten minutes. Stay with us, headlines coming up. Good morning welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Our headlines today. Special forces board an oil tanker and detain seven stowaways after a suspected hijacking off the isle of wight. The government insists there wont be any more money to fund school meal vounchers. It is 6 30am. Frank bough, the original host of breakfast time and the face of the bbc for decades, has died aged 87. The governments original furlough scheme ends this week. Ill have more details about whats replacing it. And the moment a music teacher with dementia hears his composition played by an orchestra for the first time. Good morning from Arundel Castle. We are in the middle of the cathedral gardens, festooned with colour but the Weather Forecast this week is looking unsettled. All the details in ten minutes. Good morning, just gone eight oclock. Its monday 26th october. Our top story. A Navy Special Forces unit has stormed an oil tanker off the isle of wight after a suspected hijacking. Seven stowaways, thought to be nigerian nationals, have been detained after they were reported to have threatened the crew. Number 10 would have been fully involved in what was going on, indeed. Ministers are continuing to insist they will not fund School Meal Vouchers for children in england during the half term holiday despite calls for a rethink from some conservative mps. The government has come under pressure on the issue following a high Profile Campaign by the footballer, Marcus Rashford. Scotland, wales and Northern Ireland have already introduced food Voucher Schemes. Our Political Correspondent Jonathan Blake joins us from westminster. This is a question we have put to Health Secretary at matt hancock this morning and it appears that the government is sticking firm . Yes, half term is here for schools in england and as you said, the government is holding firm in the face of huge pressure by that campaign led by Marcus Rashford to try to get them to fund free School Meal Vouchers throughout the holidays this half term, the Christmas Holidays and into next year as well as well as the effects of the coronavirus pandemic continue. It is notjust the campaign putting pressure on them, of course the labour party here saying they will try to find a way to force a vote on this in the house of commons if the government does not change its policy. And a lot of conservative mps are uneasy about it as well. They take the view the government is picking an unnecessary fight here and is going to have to look again at its policy. As you said, Health Secretary matt hancock, speaking to us in the last hour, set out what he believes the government is doing instead of providing free School Meal Vouchers, which is helping those who need it most. We have put in £63 million precisely to support councils to deliver, and i think that is the best way of doing this, through the councils who we have been seeing in the last few days are rolling out these programmes, who days are rolling out these programmes, who are days are rolling out these programmes, who are there in local areas, in the community, and who are supporting people and trying to make sure that this gets to the people who need it most. The childrens commissionerfor who need it most. The childrens commissioner for england, also speaking on breakfast, anne longfield, has set more direct help for children is needed and the government needs a Long Term Plan to help child end child hunger. The labour party say they will force this to a vote in the house of commons if the government does not change its policy. More tory mps might feel emboldened to vote against the government if that is the case and i doubt downing street would want to put that to the test. Jonathan, thank you. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has been given another award for his work on the Free School Meals campaign. The Manchester United forward said he is extremely humbled to receive the pride of britain award and said he will dedicate it to those who have helped their communities during the pandemic. Retailers will be meeting with the Welsh Government today to clarify the ban on selling nonessential items in supermarkets. More than 60,000 people have signed a petition calling for the restrictions, which have stopped people buying items like clothes and toys, to be lifted. Were joined now by our correspondent tomos morgan in cardiff. Good morning. Good morning, yes, this ban came into force when the lockdown did on friday evening and over the course of the weekend, it has been met with public outcry. Initially it was retailers, with confusion with them saying they had not had enough warning about what they could and could not sell, but when people went to the shops they saw that items were covered up and aisles had been closed. There was a lot of negative reaction on social media. The Welsh Government have done this for two reasons, they say. One in fairness to smaller retailers who have had to close but secondly, because to limit the amount of things sold so people dont go to the shop. The whole point of the firebreak of course is for people to stay at home as much as they can and to limit mixing people and potentially spreading the virus. I spoke to the first minister last night and he told me there would not bea night and he told me there would not be a change in the rules but a clarification with retailers over what the rules would be and there may be some discretion in some emergency circumstances. We should be hearing what the outcome of that meeting is with the Retail Association and with retailers but i dont think we will see any change to the basic premise of the rule. Thank you very much. We will shortly be speaking to the head of the Welsh Retail Consortium about that. And well be joined by nick ross who helped launch Breakfast Television with frank at 8. 30am. It is just it isjust coming up it is just coming up to ten past eight. Lets go to Arundel Castle in west sussex where carol has an update for us on the weather. It looks increasingly lovely ever since you arrived there at six oclock this morning, and it looks glorious. Are used to go on school trips there as a kid. I used to go. Good morning, it is beautiful and the aerial view of the castle really shows it in all its magnificence. The sun is belting down but it does not mean its going to stay dry here. We are among the herbaceous borders which are gorgeous, a kaleidoscope of colour. There is indigo spires here which are the darker blues magnificent. They have had a good drink of water over the weekend because many of us had plenty of rain and this week that will continue, with unsettled weather at times with a lot of rain and showers, also some sunshine in between and it will remain fairly windy, particularly in the west and the south. Today we already have a lot of showers, particularly in the north, the west and the south. Through the day, a lot of those will travel eastwards steadily, heading towards the north sea but still a few left behind. You could catch one almost anywhere today but in the west, more likely to be happy with the chance of some hail and some summed. Gusty winds, particularly in exposure in Western Areas summed. Gusty winds, particularly in exposure in Western Areas and some thunder. Temperatures of ten in the north to 14 in the south. This evening and overnight come High Pressure builds across us which will kill off a lot of the showers. A lot of dry weather, some clear skies and temperatures falling and also some patchy mist and fog. By the end of the night, some rain moving in to Northern Ireland, wales and south west england. Tomorrow, that rain will steadily push north eastwards so after a dry start and a relatively bright start in central and eastern parts, turning wet and behind the rain, central and eastern parts, turning wetand behind the rain, in central and eastern parts, turning wet and behind the rain, in the west wet and behind the rain, in the west we have a return to bright spells, sunshine and showers but some of them will be heavy and potentially thundery with hail and gusty winds. We are back into the rain the next day. Topsy turvy sums it up nicely. Thank you. Here on breakfast weve been following the story of 80 year old paul harvey, the former music teacher living with dementia whose skills on the piano turned him into an internet sensation. Using just four random notes, paul created a melody that inspired the bbc philharmonic to turn it into a full orchestral piece. And yesterday, paul heard his creation come to life for the first time, as Graham Satchell reports. Note plays. There is your four notes. He sings the notes. It started with just four notes. Paul harvey, whos 80 and has dementia, improvised a tune that went viral online. Dad is, at heart, a performer and an entertainer and a musician and a pianist, and when he sits at the piano and either plays a classical piece or one of his own compositions, or improvises, it brings him back it brings him back. And its vitally important in his life. After pauls tune was played on radio 4s broadcasting house, the bbcs Philharmonic Orchestra was asked to get involved. Its a wonderfully nostalgic, romantic piece of music, and the fact that it was improvised, as well, just makes it more special, really, doesnt it . It reallyjust highlights the power of music, i suppose, doesnt it . And the importance of music to Mental Health. Dan has adapted pauls tune for full orchestra individual parts were recorded locked down at home, the final version given its World Premiere again on broadcasting house. Everyone involved wanted this moment to be the first airtime of four notes, pauls tune. Piece plays. Wow, wow. Fantastic. I was just listening to a wonderful piece of music and then all of a sudden i say to myself, i wrote that i wrote that you wrote it on the spot. You didntjust write it, you improvised that wow. I wont. I wont forget that. That was. That was very. Very wonderfully special. And youve got Nick Van Eede from the cutting crew yeah. Thats right. Wow. He was one of my pupils. Paul harvey has had a remarkable life concert pianist, composer, inspirational teacher. His favourite modern composer and musical hero . Stephen sondheim. You know, he. He writes the words and music, you know, which is ridiculous. I think its. People shouldnt have that sort of talent but he has so one final surprise. Hello, mr harvey, this is stephen sondheim, and ijust wanted to thank you so much for the compliments you gave me, and also thank you for that lovely tune that you invented. Dear, oh, dear. Which i cant wait to steal. He chuckles. Wow thank you so much. Wow. Dear, oh, dear, oh, dear. I didnt think there was any more surprises. The great man himself the great man himself, wow. Tell him for him, he can have that tune with pleasure anybody else id charge for it, but, you know. Wow. Oh, my goodness. Oh, dear thats wonderful. That is deeply wonderful. Thank you so much for doing that. Pauls track will be released as a single next week, the money going to two charities the Alzheimers Society and music for dementia. What do you reckon, christmas number one . Oh, my goodness, yes 0h well, were going to aim for that. In the video, we could get you dressed up as father christmas. They laugh. Its made me laugh, its made me cry, that peace has made me smile. Its just glorious, cry, that peace has made me smile. Itsjust glorious, isnt cry, that peace has made me smile. Its just glorious, isnt it . Obviously we will start the search for the lyrics right now. Someone called michael ball. Thank you so much for all of your messages this morning. Cathy says, shes not the only one, im in tears, loudly crying watching that piece of music. Simply beautiful and the music behind it is inspirational. Bravo paul and the beautiful moniker orchestra. What a start to the week. Natalie says, i want this, im also a pianist, the granddaughter, and thus touches my heart deeply. Its been a big boost for the teaching profession. So many people have been in response. Laura says, how beautiful, people with dementia still have so much to offer. Look how proud his son is. Thats the moment which gets you when his son gives him a hug at the end. He says, dad, its brilliant, that lovely family unit. What an incredible man, says laura. Linda says, stunning and heartbreaking in so many positive ways. Thank you. Paul, looking forward to your next production. No pressure. Quite a few people are saying how can i get it for christmas . Keep watching. We will tell you a few times. It is 20 past eight. The governments Job Retention scheme comes to an end this week after supporting peoples wages since march. Vish has been looking at how important its been and whats set to replace it. Hi, everyone. Good morning. There is some replacement for some people. Not everyone will be eligible. We will have a detail for you this morning. At its peak, more than 9. 5 million jobs were furloughed, costing the government almost £40 billion, the biggest and most expensive response to the crisis. Its a lifeline. Its always been my wish that we would be able to look after all our team and continue to pay their wages. But while we have so little income coming in, we simply wouldnt be able to do that without the scheme. But about the freelancers, the self employed or those whod just started a job . In all, its estimated around three Million People were left out, left behind. People in my situation need some money from you. We need any financial help. Its not available. Dont make me beg for it. You didnt make anybody else pay for it. Why are you making me beg for it . Its not fair, for goodness sake. The scheme is now ending, but the pandemic and its Economic Impact are not. 1. 5 Million People are out of work, and more are expected to follow. What happens now . Well, thats a question that many of you will be asking this week what help can i get now furlough has come to an end . Well, from 1st november, the governmentsjob support scheme kicks in and will run for six months. So, from sunday, if you work for a business thats so, from sunday, if you work for a business thats 67 of your wages. Thats up to of £2,100 a month. But where does this leave workers and businesses in other areas that are open but less busy due to restrictions . Well, in these cases, the government will pick up nearly two thirds of your wage, and your employer will pay 5 of it. To qualify you will have to work 20 of your usual hours a month. Also companies that have made staff redundant recently can re employ those workers and claim support. Hospitality, accommodation and leisure firms in tier two and three areas will also get grants on top of this. Around 150,000 businesses in england could benefit from these. Lots of people wont qualify, lots of people this week ive already got in touch saying they are looking for work and we will be talking about them later on in the week. Thank you very much. Good morning, youre watching breakfast from the bbc. People in wales are now living under tough new lockdown measures but theres outrage over the decision to ban the sale of items like clothes, toys and books from supermarkets. A petition to reverse the decision has had more than 60,000 signatures and today retailers will meet with the Welsh Government for clarification on what is considered nonessential. Sara jones, from the wales retail consortium, joins us now. Good morning to you. Thank you very much indeed forjoining us. First of all, your opinion really on some of these items not being allowed to be sold. Well, its a really challenging situation for welsh retailers. This is something weve forewarned about, its difficult to define essential or nonessential items on the concern for us and we are glad that in our letter to the first minister last week was that its going to be putting a lot of pressure on front line staff. These are individuals who have worked with us are individuals who have worked with us throughout the pandemic and we didnt think it was fair to create that uncertainty and confusion and effectively put the pressure on the front line of our vital colleagues. You are concerned about the pressure put some people where shops are open . Sorry, i didnt catch that. One of your concerns as the pressure on people where shops are open . Yes, because effectively our colleagues are now having to navigate through this process and when there is confusion in store they are happy to explain that and communicate that to consumers and that puts pressure on them and weve already seen a massive rise in violence and abuse against shop workers throughout this pandemic which is completely despicable and something weve been concerned about throughout, so we are worried this is putting pressure on the front line. One of the things they say it is for example the recent toys are nonessential is because toy shops have had to close. What is your view on that . Yeah, we com pletely what is your view on that . Yeah, we completely understand what the Welsh Government have said they are trying to do, to create a level Playing Field, but there are issues with that. There consequences, so by trying to level the Playing Field youve ended up creating winners and losers because what we have seen as an acceleration of people now choosing to Purchase Online and its very choosing to Purchase Online and its very concerning choosing to Purchase Online and its very concerning for a lot of our members that there is an element of distorting what you can and cant buy in store and thats not helping things and helping the Retail Industry more widely which is undergoing such huge pressure at the moment and challenges. Are you talking to the government . The Welsh Government of said they would look at what happened over the weekend, are you close to some sort of breakthrough or agreement . Well, we hope to speak to them today. I wrote to the first minister yesterday morning and asked if we could have a conversation as early as possible today, so we hope that will happen and we understand that there is unlikely to be a reversal of this decision and we just want to work with the Welsh Government to ensure they can get back to their Core Public Health message which is absolutely imperative during a fire break, and we can get back to serving our customers and doing what we do best as retailers. What would you like to see change . We would like to see some more clarity in that guidance because quite clearly at the moment its very ambiguous. In an ideal world we like to ensure all retail can stay open whether it was essential or nonessential, and its quite clear from the stage advice that actually retail is not a place where transmission is happening and the impact of this policy is extremely low, so our fundamental argument is all retail should be able to remain open but as it stands, with the policy in place, we wa nt it stands, with the policy in place, we want to try and find a workable solution and i think thats got to be around providing more clarity, more discretion for the retailers, and just help find workable solutions. We understand its only 16 days, so weve got to try and work our way through this as constructively as we possibly can. Thank you very much. We are here until 9 15am this morning. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning, im alice salfield. The number of people relying on Unemployment Benefits in london has more than doubled since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. In february, 3 of people in the capital were claiming. Thats risen to 8 with almost half a Million People here now receiving state help. Transport for london said most passengers were obeying the law. And on escalators on the underground more than 200 uv light sanitising devices are being installed. It follows a successful trial which found they improve sanitisation levels on handrails by at least 50 . And if youre interested in how safe you are on the tube from coronavirus, theres a video on our facebook you might want to check out. Its all about the scientists testing to find out if they can find any traces of the virus. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. All looking good on the tubes at the moment. But there are some delays and cancellations to southern and thameslink services. And theres only one woolwich ferry running this morning. These are the queues towards the blackwall tunnel as a result. Thats all from me until just after 9am. Bye for now. All that and more at 9 15am. Loads to pack in and a sofa and a chair, what you think . A future . Its a nice idea frank bough, a fixture on Bbc Television for much of the 1960s, 70s and 80s has died at the age of 87. Frank presented grandstand, the sports review of the year, and the Magazine Programme nationwide. He proved a natural fit when the bbc launched its new morning programme, breakfast time, in 1983. Daniela relph looks back on his life and career. Music. He was relaxed and friendly, a favourite uncle, a fixture in the nations living rooms for more than 30 years. Good evening. This time tomorrow, itll all be over. Will the grand National Throw up yet another moment of drama, to be written into the history of the greatest steeplechase of them all . The temple to the goddess canon. His long career started in the 60s. Here he is in tokyo. What must surely be the greatest show on earth, with the opening of the 1964 olympic games. He made his career in sport, presenting match of the day. Hello. Our division two match this afternoon, a true top and bottom affair, with the home side, leyton orient, bottom of the Second Division at the moment, entertaining the visitors from tyneside, newcastle united. Even the cameramen are better dressed than i am when morecambe and wise gathered top bbc presenters for their 1977 christmas show, bough was one of them. Which just made the news of the worlds revelation in may 1988 an even greater bombshell. Were joined now by franks former breakfast time co host nick ross and presenter dame Esther Rantzen. Thank you forjoining us this morning, great to talk to you and firstly, you were there at the start of breakfast time with him so what was he like and what did he bring to the programme . Morning, the little summary you have done is actually brilliant. That was him. I heard the brea kfast brilliant. That was him. I heard the breakfast time music from the 80s earlier this morning and it still brings butterflies to my stomach when we started it, it was turmoil, it was frenetic, and it was frank who really brought it together. The whole thing was the creation of a brilliant producer called ron neil but the person who made it work so much was frank. He had so much more experience than the rest of us and just before we went on air, with largely unscripted three hours with panic in yourear largely unscripted three hours with panic in your ear from the gallery, we we re panic in your ear from the gallery, we were on the jitters and frank went. Clapped his hands and said, calm down, its going to be fine. And it was. We can also talk to Esther Rantzen who worked with him briefly on breakfast time. Unflappable, was he . He certainly seemed that way. In your excellent package you described him as the nations uncle and i think that was the sort of reliability, the cardigans come up to that point all presenters had shirts and ties and we re presenters had shirts and ties and were formal, sitting behind desks but suddenly they were relaxed with a lovely atmosphere and in charge of it all was uncle frank and that is what made the appalling expose done on him so shocking. I think these days he would have been able to climb back, im sure it seems a very draconian punishment to destroy not just the career of a man but his public identity and it must have cost him, well, everything, merely. Im very sad to think of him dying like that when we have such happy memories of him. Esther makes an interesting point because he had that clean cut image and the revelations came out and i think right until his most recent interviews, he didnt give many but he would be concerned people would remember those headlines rather than the successful career he had. Of course, that was his overwhelming concern in later years, he had this glittering career and he was enormous fun. Esther said he had a twinkle in his eye and im afraid he did, in more ways than one but frankly, for all of us on breakfast time, it was one of the happiest times of our lives, a brilliantly happy team and he really led it in so happy team and he really led it in so many ways, he had so much more experience than the rest. He had started in the north of england i think in newcastle on local tv, i had started in belfast, but he had 15 years on me with fantastic experience on sports television. And if you think, now everybody makes television, we take our mobile phone and we can upload things to utube but this was Something Special for us. But this was Something Special for us. It was two and a half hours of live tv utube. Maybe 20 or 30 live tv utube. Maybe 20 or 30 live feeds, 20 or 30 guests, heaven knows whats going on, people talking in your ear knows whats going on, people talking in yourearand knows whats going on, people talking in your ear and if anything went wrong, you dealt completely safe in his hands. He was a genius ata safe in his hands. He was a genius at a television. You felt safe. And lets talk about the jumpers because was that his idea . No what happened was, the first time we turned up, i used to do news and Current Affairs i turned up in a tie as one did in those days, he was in an open neck shirt. It was very much his show, three presenters but it was franks show so the next rehearsal i came in an open necked shirt and he wore a tie the next time he came in a jumper and i said, frank, what are we going to wear . It emerged and evolved, it wasnt a formal decision, let alone one made by the bosses but itjust felt absolutely right for the time, absolutely right for the time, absolutely right for ron neils idea of this relaxed show with viewers being invited into our breakfast and we should be there as we would be at home. We were able to speak to ron neil earlier about his memories of frank as well. Nick talked about frank as well. Nick talked about frank being a really reliable presenter and i suppose there are not many people who work across as many different genres as he did nowadays. It was a big jump for him to go from sport to nationwide. I was to go from sport to nationwide. I was working on it from time to time and he came in tojoin mike barrett as the lead presenter, having done sports reporting until then. But he had a very quick intelligence, you could pick up interviews and work with them as well as anyone with a Current Affairs background. I think he was very versatile. They talk about sex, drugs and rock and roll andl about sex, drugs and rock and roll and i think the problem with frank was and i think the problem with frank was that the public didnt know about the sex and drugs and also he didnt involve himself in rock and roll, he was a Current Affairs presenter and that was it. I think if he had been exposed that way and beenin if he had been exposed that way and been in other industries in the entertainment world, he might have been forgiven and brought back into the fold and i think his talent deserved it. What would be your fondest memory of him, nick . |j deserved it. What would be your fondest memory of him, nick . I think in that first week, it was the ease with which he segued from one thing to another. I remember interviewing the chancellor of the exchequer and frank are saying, lets take him across to Glenn Christian who is doing the cooking and it was the way he just seamlessly moved from one to the other as though we were not on television, in front of 2 Million People, but as though we were just at home and that was his genius. I have very fond memories of frank, im so sorry to hear he has died. Cute so much to both of you for sharing those wonderful memories thank you. Remembering former colleague frank bough. We can talk to carol right now who is at Arundel Castle right now and you also knew him . Thats right, in 1983 came to work for the bbc as a production secretary and frank was very much in the forefront of the programme and was so the forefront of the programme and was so kind to me. I was hopeless and he was always so accommodating. We had a summer party for the staff in his house every summer and i went to bat, just a lovely man and our sincerest condolences to all his family. I sincerest condolences to all his family. I went to that. What a view it is in Arundel Castle and you can see that the sun is out. It has been a chilly start and im joined by Martin Duncan it was the head gardener. The gardens look fabulous at but now is the time of year when we put the pla nts to is the time of year when we put the plants to bed for the winter, so what should we be doing . Cutting back herbaceous perennials and all sorts of things like that, harvesting the leaves, and also leaving some leaves for the hedgehogs over the winter which is always a really good idea. And that you were telling me earlier the holly bushes have got lots of berries on. What does that mean . very cold winter, im convinced. We had so many barriers on the holly, but the other thing gardeners will be doing is putting in the 126,000 bulbs i ordered for the next tulip festival. Gosh, thats no mean feat. A lot of the stubs here came from the great stumps. They came from the great storm, most of them, and they are all hardwoods like sweet chestnut and oak. So i think michael fish, compliments to him, i hope so. Laughter we all Work Together obviously. think he enjoyed it. Thank you so much, martin. The gardens look fabulous and the castle is fabulous, as well and this morning the weather is fabulous too but not everywhere. In fact, this week the forecast is u nsettled. In fact, this week the forecast is unsettled. What we are looking out is rain at times, windy at times as well, but there will be some sunshine but by the time we get to the end of the week, it will be milder, particularly so across southern areas. Now, this morning, a lot of showers across parts of the north and the west, across the English Channel as well, and through the day, some of those will prove to be heavy, potentially thundery, with some hail. They will be drifting steadily eastward through the day with some behind and still gusty winds in the south and the west. Temperatures are 10 14. This evening and overnight, a ridge of High Pressure builds across us, and that will kill off a lot of the showers and under clear skies, temperatures will fall away and it will be cold, and by the end of the night, rain across Northern Ireland, wales and the south west. Tomorrow, that band of rain will continue its journey, moving steadily north eastward through the course of the day and behind that, we see a return to some sunshine but also some showers and some of those will be heavy with the chance of some hail and also some thunder, so the brighter skies tomorrow are going to be in the Northern Isles. Even after that, we are back in the Northern Isles. Even after that, we are back into u nsettled after that, we are back into unsettled conditions. Louise and dan, its been magnificent here this morning. Back to you. Look at the beautiful leaves behind you. Absolutely wonderful. One quick look from above you, as well at the castle. Just gorgeous. Thank you. If you have just switched on, if you havejust switched on, that is Arundel Castle, where the weather has been done all morning. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you. Many never believed Michael Schumacher is reckoned to be broken but Lewis Hamilton, 92nd grand prix title in portugal has surpassed his record. Good morning. We are running out of superlatives for this at this point. 92 races. It is remarkable. There was a time when no one thought anyone would break any of Michael Schumachers records and yesterday it was simply another dominant race from the World Champion and his team, mercedes. As his engineer told him afterwards, you are rewriting the history books. And he is hamilton is in line to pull level with schumacher on world titles as well, this win increases his lead at the top of the drivers championship, putting a seventh crown firmly in his sights. Earlier on breakfast former formula 1 champion damon hill told us hes a force to be reckoned with. Hes got this natural talent which is unquantifiable. Its very difficult for anyone to beat him. I mean, the people who have beaten him have usually. Usually hes destroyed his team mates to be honest. Nico rosberg did beat him but then decided to give up the sport afterwards, so that gives you some clue as to how tough it is to beat Lewis Hamilton. And from four wheels to two great britains Tao Geoghegan hart says his victory in the giro ditalia is beyond his wildest dreams, after he became only the fifth british rider to win one of cyclings grand tours. Geoghegan hart began the day in second place overall, although level on time with australias jai hindley. The final stage was a ten mile time trial on the streets of milan, and Geoghegan Hart was the faster rider, winning by 39 seconds. Hejoins bradley wiggins, chris froome, Geraint Thomas and simon yates in british cyclings history books, the fifth briton to win a grand tour and the second to win the giro after froome. The team boss of ineos grenadier sir Dave Brailsford told us this marks a new era in cycling. Hes part of this new generation of young guys coming through and they are racing more aggressively, they are racing more openly and a bit of flair and a bit of panache. Thats held them in really good stead and the way hes managed himself through the entire race, he sort of became, ok, i might be able to do this. And i think he kept going day by day and he didnt get ahead of himself and putting pressure on himself. He rode beautifully, he really did. Plenty of football yesterday. Leicester city continued their great start to the premier League Season with victory over arsenal. Jamie vardy came off the bench to score the only goal of the game. Its the first time leicester have won at arsenal in 47 years. Yesterdays results on the bbc sport website. Six nations was back at the weekend. Englands women have retained the six nations without even playing. Thats after scotland did them a big favour. They launched an incredible fightback against france to salvage a draw, meaning that england win the title and complete back to back grand slams if they beat italy next sunday. It is so good to have a six nations back. Weve had to wait quite a long time for this to be tied up. Eight months. Next weekend is the big one. Thank you. The longest six nations ever, isnt it . Thank you. Lots of you are watching strictly come dancing over the weekend, 10 million, but if youre in search of any box that to get stuck into a head of halloween, halloween, then the latest series from the creator of luther could be just the thing. The sister is a four part psychological thriller about a man who gets caught up in the death of a young woman while on a night out. Lets take a look. Ijust want you to be happy. I love you. What are you doing here . Can i come in . They are digging up the woods. Three years ago, i lost my little sister. She went out one night, it never came home. They only need a fragment of dna. If there is anything left, they will find it. You were talking in your sleep. What did i say . You stay away from my family and you dont say a word. Do i need to call someone . Do i need a lawyer or something . Its her fault what did you do . Wow i love the look there. Good morning to you. You have us both scared there. You play nathan in this. Weve seen a really good taster of what happens but how would you set it up . Id say that was quite an intense clip for this time of the morning, sorry about that. Its scary and its a psychological thriller but also a love story. So i think having that mix is quite a unique story to be told. We dont see that very often. I dont think we are giving too much away but you we re we are giving too much away but you were ina we are giving too much away but you were in a relationship with this sister of the girl who was then the centre of the story as it unravels, is that right . Yeah, i think im allowed to say that. Nathan is a really decent, normal guy, just want to get on with life, and something happens to him ten years ago and then in the last ten years hes got toa then in the last ten years hes got to a place where he is able to have a romance, fall in love, have everything contained and then the show starts and its like pandora has been released from the box and this next four consecutive night this next four consecutive night this week is about and desperately trying to get pandora back into the box. His past is beginning to catch up box. His past is beginning to catch up with him. Yes, absolutely. Its written by the guy who wrote luther. Luther fans will know what the vibe is. Its a really new piece of work. Theres so much about it that i love, not least of all it is scary right from the start. Yeah, totally. Its a good time of year to do that. We are in october, halloween vibes, why not go for that . The fact it is back to back, was not always the plan to run it as something you could binge over a few nights . Im not sure if that was the plan originally but i think it works so well on itv. I think they make it like an event box set. You know eve ryo ne like an event box set. You know everyone binges box now so it feels like the right thing to do and this isa like the right thing to do and this is a story you dont want to wait one week four. It will keep you involved, so im really happy its going to be on for the next fortnight. People will get bored of my face but for people who like the show which should be really enjoyable. I think its three different timelines, so youve to concentrate. Correct, yes. That was the unique thing about this show, as an actor its a challenge because you are playing three different energies and you want to be authentic and truthful to each of those and i think the person who had the most work would be sophie, the make up artist, because i was co nsta ntly make up artist, because i was constantly having my hair changed, and my beard trimmed, and make up, so and my beard trimmed, and make up, so she was under the challenge for the whole cast and did an amazing job. Lets take a look at another moment from the First Episode. At the moment when you get a knock on the moment when you get a knock on the doorfrom the moment when you get a knock on the door from an uninvited guest. This is the First Episode. Hello, mate. What are you doing here . Can i come in . We agreed. We said. I know. So what are you doing here then . They are digging up the woods. They cant. But they are. And at the moment, russell, your life changes forever from that point on. Thats the moment nathan is dreading and it comes true and thats a masterclass in acting from bertie there. The whole cast is phenomenal. The actress who plays my wife is a phenomenal actress, and its a really special show. You say its a really special show. You say it feels like a special show but does also feel weird going through what we are going through now would you think about this was all filmed pre restrictions and pre coronavirus, wasnt it . Pre restrictions and precoronavirus, wasnt it . Yeah, the thing is it feels like you watch atv the thing is it feels like you watch a tv show would you go, you cant do that now. You wouldnt be able to do that now. You wouldnt be able to do that now. You wouldnt be able to do that now because of covid. You wouldnt have that many people in a room because of covid. Every show you watch that was filmed pre macro covid is dated now. It feels exciting and its going to be a release because, as an audience member you are not going to be thinking about covid hopefully. Honestly everything i watch now i think, why are they touching . Shocking. You were in new york about to play on broadway when broadway came to play on broadway when broadway came lockdown came. to play on broadway when broadway came lockdown came. I was doing whos afraid of virginia worth, eight previews, seventh preview and one of our ushers tested positive for covid so we would ground zero on broadway or next day we came in and we had a big clean up, we had meetings, we went on that night, and then ijust a big clean up, we had meetings, we went on that night, and then ijust thinking, i was thinking on this line step forward in that line make sure youre looking at laurie metcalf, but in the back of your head youre thinking this pandemic is taking over the globe and no one knows what it is and here iam making and no one knows what it is and here i am making sure i get my lines right on stage. It felt a very odd. And that was it. The show stopped. All of broadway shut down. I flew home and then we are all in a daze, but it was strange, a phenomenon, the theatre world and everything just sort of collapsed. They say broadway never sleeps. Its com pletely broadway never sleeps. Its completely gone to bed. Thats a very clear picture of a shock we all had back in february and march this year. Russell, thank you so much for talking to us. All the best for it. The sister starts tonight at 9pm on itv. Its a cross four consecutive night, so its a cross four consecutive night, so you its a cross four consecutive night, so you can see its a cross four consecutive night, so you can see it almost in one go. It is one of those. Youre watching bbc breakfast. Its 8. 59. Good morning, this is bbc news, im victoria derbyshire. Here are the headlines. Special forces board an oil tanker and detain seven stowaways after a suspected hijacking off the isle of wight. This was a very efficient operation. It only took nine minutes from the word go to the stowaways being rounded up and identified. As half term begins for many, ministers insist they wont change their minds on free School Meal Vouchers over the holidays, saying theyre providing help through extra funding to local authorities. We have put in £63 million precisely to support councils to deliver, and i think that is the best way of doing this. A covid test that can provide a result in 12
