But on its first pass, solar orbiter got much closer, within 48 million miles. And over the next two years, its heading closer still, within 25 million miles of the sun. This will give us a totally new view. In the next few years, well actually be able to pull up and look down on the sun above the north pole and then later on at the south pole, and weve never done that before. Weve never taken pictures at the north and south pole of the sun, and it could be dramatically different to what we see around the equator. Todays images are just a glimpse of whats to come. The hope is, this mission will finally shed light on our star. Rebecca morelle, bbc news. Time for a look at the weather. Heres philip avery. That is the first time some people will have seen the sun today. It was bright on the eastern side of scotla nd bright on the eastern side of scotland and in the north, but the rain has arrived in inverness and one or two other places across the north west of scotland. This weather front is working further towards the south and east. All of us will see it over the next few days, but i emphasise the days. This is moving very slowly indeed and will drag cloud and rain across scotland, Northern Ireland during the night. Further south across england and wales, every bit as close as last night and some will not get a temperature below 60 degrees. That is how you start friday, england and wales, a lot of cloud around, some brightness to be had and eventually, the rain from this weather front gets away from Northern Ireland, late evening sunshine here and out into the borders and north west of england and north west wales. There the south, my ways, even warmer than today, 25 possibly 26. Brighter and fresher further north, eventually getting into the greater part of scotland. Quite breezy close to the low pressure in the north west. This is as far ahead of saturday. The same front has only 5 . It halfway same front has only made it halfway down the british islands and wales, the north west of england, quite a jump the north west of england, quite a jump start. After a bright start in the south, more hazy, temperatures pushing towards 23 or 2a and it is behind that with a feature that we get the brighter conditions, temperatures in the teens, some showers into the north west of scotla nd showers into the north west of scotland and quite blustery here. As far ahead as sunday morning, we push the milder and that frontal system away from east anglia and the south east, brighter skies follow behind and quitea east, brighter skies follow behind and quite a dry day in prospect out and quite a dry day in prospect out and about. But it will be fresher across the british isles. Thats all from the bbc news at six, so its goodbye from me. And on bbc one, we nowjoin the bbcs news teams where you are. Hello and welcome to sportsday with me chetan pathak, coming up on the programme. Dom sibleys 50 steadies england on day one of the second test against the west indies as they pass 150. An independent review will now be carried out after allegations of bullying and abusive behaviour in british gymnastics. And remembering a legend leeds united pay their respects as they look to move a step closer to their premier league return. Welcome to the programme, thanks forjoining us. If englands second test against the west indies is as thrilling as the first were in for a treat. Play got under way at old trafford today with england looking to level the series, after they lost the first match by four wickets in southampton. Jofra archers electric fast bowling was one of the highlights there but hes playing no part in manchester after being dropped this morning for breaking the rules around being in a bio secure bubble. 0ur cricket reporter henry moran was watching the opening day. Well talk about jofra archer in a minute but lets start with dom sibley because its not everyday he gets a half century and hes steadied england on day one along with ben stokes 7 yes, though he has been dropped ice, he has been excellent for england, saw it at the top of the line up in jesss eighth tests match up. Saw it at the top of the line up in jesss eighth tests match up. They lost early wickets with two batman falling before the lunch break leaving england in a precarious 9 2. Joe rouche showed some resilience. Stokes and sibley put on close to 100 runs and they. They couldve perhaps made more breakthroughs that they have not made so far today, just look out at the scoreboard which tells me 183 3 for england. Just look out at the scoreboard which tells me 183 3 for englandlj think which tells me 183 3 for england. thinkjofra archer has taken 30 wickets in a test matches for ink and then they wouldve loved to have had them out there for this one but instead he will be watching from isolation. He is over on the far side of the crowd in one of those hotel rooms watching on because hes not playing a part in this game. He broke the isolation rule between the test matches played in southampton that finished on sunday and the match played here at old trafford in manchester. What we know from the ecb is that archer headed back to his flat in brighton instead of coming straight to the ground here, that was the breach of the biosecure environment thatjofra archer now has to spend five days in isolation, ta ke two has to spend five days in isolation, take two covid tests in that time with beauchamp to come back negative before he can return to the england squad. Jofra archer has apologised and knows that he put players and staff in danger and he takes for responsibly for his actions but no question about it incan having to make changes to the top line up so late in the day which has been a real frustration particularly with all the work is been put into get this came on play soon coming to a close. Henry, thank you. Next, questions continue to be asked of british gymnastics and what its going to do to deal with complaints of bullying and abusive behaviour in the sport. Gymnasts have continued to come forward in recent days detailing their experiences of mistreatment. And today weve been told therell be an independent review. Im joined now by our sports News ReporterNatalie Pirks whos been following the story. British gymnastics was going to undertake this review but theyre stepping aside . Except that of any uk sport and Sport England come in and as he said stepping aside and they said it was announcing this move to remove any doubt of the reviews integrity but frankly had a little option. It was under mounting pressure in the last ten days or so, streams of gymnasts right from grassroots up to olympic level coming forward to talk about their alleged mistreatment in the sport. Last week and announced this independent review but there were concerns not lease from the British Athletes Commission which questioned the independence of it of the sport, if it sets up a independent review can actually be independent . By it stepped aside to and hopes to learn lessons. Uk sport said it will help develop the terms of reference for the review to ensure it has credibility crucially for this gymnasts coming forward, like 12012 libyan who told the bbc on to say that in the last five years she had submitted two different complaints to british domestics which she heard nothing back from. And like bronze medallist on the floor amy tinkler from rio 2016, she notes on tuesday she had made a complaint to british gymnastics which is undisclosed in december and was waiting for an outcome eight months on i spoke to hannah weidman earlier in the switch had to say. We want to make sure that they were transparent and that they were being open and honest and i think that it is not honest that they have stepped aside. We want to make sure that theyre still being transparent and that this is going. Are the results when to be made public and will be no about it . I think this should have happen from the start really. I think its why we didnt have much trust in british gymnastics at the time and why we we re gymnastics at the time and why we were a bit sceptical about the independent review in the first place but it is stephanie starting this movement and this change thatis that is needed. So we have got this independent review natalie but what other support our gymnasts being given . A confidential helpline is being set up for any gymnasts to come forward confidentially and talk about any abuse they may have suffered. It is a joint venture between the nsp cc and the British Athletes Commission. And it is available from the 20th ofjuly. 0ne programmer told the bbc that the helpline will be a safe place for athletes and he confirmed it is already had inquiries. Between the nspcc. Natalie, thank you. Its another busy day of football leeds united will be on the brink of securing their place in the premier League Next Season if they beat barnsley that match is already under way, well bring you the goals shortly but first its a big night in the premier league at both ends of the table. Four matches in total, two kicked off at six. Second from bottom aston villa four points off safety at the moment desperately need a win at everton. Goalless there. Meanwhile in the fight for Champions League football a win for leicester moves them three clear of Manchester United in fifth and keeps their fate in their hands. And for the moment it is going their way. They meet Sheffield United by 10. Man united will be keeping their eye on that game, they play at Crystal Palace afterwards whilst southampton, who snatched that dramatic point at old trafford on monday, are at home to brighton. United boss 0le Gunnar Solksjaer says they need to put that disappointment behind them. Keep on doing what we have been doing. Just trust ourselves, trust yourself. You are at the club where it always boils down to the last couple of weeks or two or three games ina couple of weeks or two or three games in a season couple of weeks or two or three games in a season anyway. So we have done fantastic since we restarted. Started with the draw against totte n ha m of started with the draw against tottenham of course but then had a great run and out that a little bit ofa great run and out that a little bit of a setback is a test of our mentalities. Time now for some of the days other sport stories. And england and wales will meet in a friendly at Wembley Stadium on the 8th of october. The match will still be played behind closed doors as government restrictions on crowds continue. The two countries last met at euro 2016, with england winning 2 1. Champions chelsea have picked up the top two honours at the Fa Womens Super League awards. Emma hayes was named manager of the season, while striker beth england won player of the season. Tiger woods starting his first. And katie boulterfinished top of her group in the progress tour womens championships after beating Jodie Anna Burrage in straight sets. Shell play freya christie, her best friends she says, for a place in the final burrage still qualifies in second and will play Alicia Barnett in the other semi. When Premiership Rugby confirmed earlier this year that the champions saracens were going to be relegated for persistently breaking the salary cap it raised huge questions about whether their top players would stay. Today arguably their biggest the england captain 0wen farrell has committed his long term future to the club. Im joined now by our rugby correspondent chris jones. Farrell grew up at saracens, he was a teenager in their academy is this a heart over head decision . I dont think it is a surprise because farrell never gave any indications he was looking away from saracens even though as you say it is such a big bunch show new say have european intimacy champions relegated especially in the fashion they wear. But for a long time it is clear that pharaoh would stick it out at saracens and be part of this rebuilding job. Pharaoh out at saracens and be part of this rebuildingjob. Pharaoh would be hejoins a host rebuildingjob. Pharaoh would be he joins a host of high profile england players to do the same. Some players have left saracens especially the Younger Generation before the likes of farrell, jamie george, elliott daily, they will say and have a season in the champ ship and have a season in the champ ship and it is a bizarre and unprecedented state of affairs that the england captain playing in the second tier but that is where we are and as you say this is farrells oi hood club, he played alongside his dad once for service and it is a little bit of head and heart as well. There are some players who would damage their chances of playing for their country if they dropped into the championship but its safe to say 0wen farrell isnt one of them and youve been speaking to england coach eddiejones . Exactly. Eddie jones i exactly. Eddiejones i think is seeing every player individually but almost seeing it as being two types of player. Young players such as ben earl, who is 21 or 22, he needs regular gametime in the premiership to prove himself as an International Player and he has already gone on loa n to player and he has already gone on loan to bristol, and another who is looking to play for england one day ina similar
