For a lot of people tonight. We have correspondents out there. Well be checking with those in the hardest hit areas. An island looked out of a picture postcard not tonight. Not even close. We want to begin with chad myers who joins us in central park. Here in new york what happened . A lot of people woke up today, said wait a minute this is nothing what we thought it was going to be. Two out of three computer models that we usually agree with we like them got it wrong. The Weather Service looking at it said this is a bad storm. The one model that got it right, it was right on the money. Nothing really went wrong with the storm. Something went wrong with the models and so therefore, the model forecast because its garbage in garbage out. A meteorologist has to look and say this is what the computer says this is what i should believe. What they got wrong was the track of the actual storm itself . Absolutely. What happened to the storm, the two models the european and the north american mesoscale model, had it 100 miles closer to nantucket than it came. It moved far away and nantucket got slammed like we should have in the computer forecast. I dont think its a bad thing that we didnt get it. Honestly honestly, it saved millions of dollars of cleanup and heartache. It surprises people in this day and age, its still an imprecise science. The problem is our Computer Technology and speed isnt what it needs to be to make a perfect forecast. The computers can make a perfect forecast churning as fast as it can. It would take them 14 days to make the forecast. By the time the computer was done it would have been 12 days old. Lets look at where the storm did hit hard. A lot of people badly affected. Where is the worst part. From worcester to boston to Providence Rhode island. On the eastern tip of long island. Montauk and ice lip getting pounded with a lot of snow. You got to pick up 36 inches of snow now where were picking up 8 to 10 12 here. Thats a big difference. How much longer in those areas . Still going to snow for six more hours. We have six more hours of inch or half inch snow. Thats 3 to 6 more on top of what theyre seeing. Once you get 36 whats 39 . Its a meter stick or yardstick. The problem is the wind tonight. Its howling. Not so much here. The wind off the cape and in boston and parts of connecticut are 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour making windchill factors of 10 below zero. Pets arent good with that or people. Still a lot to do for authorities. Well be checking back in with chad throughout the next two hours were on the air. I want to go a half hour south of boston where the ocean breached a seawall left block after block covered in water. Were there in scituate massachusetts. I know it was breached. Whats the situation now . There was so much with the water with very good reason anderson. These neighborhoods, about a block back from the beach, they saw floodwaters 4, 5 feet high. It came over that seawall, ran into the backyards, filled basements and we saw debris scattered across the road here. The water leading up to the doorways across the street from where im standing. We got up on the seawall earlier this afternoon when the high tide came in. We saw that seawater come up splashing over sending rocks and sand with it. This is exactly the situation that people were worried about. This is an area where they have this problem. Storm surge will cause flooding had they get a big storm in scituate and other communities south of boston. People who live hearsay they were not anticipating the level of water this morning. Thats when the big amount of water came pushing through here. At the second high tide 4 00 x 5 00 in the afternoon, less water but enough to run into the snowy streets. A lot of the streets not able to be traversed all afternoon. We saw the National Guard evacuating people from their homes. Otherwise, police were traveling around in high axle vehicles going through the streets covered in water warning people they want to get out before the high tide came back this evening, anderson. In terms much tonight, the windchill will feel like below zero more snow predicted. What are officials most concerned about right now . For a lot of people the issue is power. This is a town because they were concerned about the water, because they were concerned about wind and flooding they actually cut the power here in a number of neighborhoods last night. They wanted to limit the possibility of a fire and create a situation in which officials wouldnt be able to respond potentially to homes burning. Thats a problem in the past. Back in 2012 four beach houses burned when firefighters couldnt reach them and winds carried the flames during a big storm. Tonight, there are people who had to leave their homes because they were without power on this street and this neighborhood where people are dealing with getting the floodwater out of their basements, they still have power and theyre pretty grateful for that because they need the light and certainly the heat tonight, anderson. Chad i was wondering what she talked about. Do people actually have basements . Its kind of on the sand and maybe everything is on a pillar. Are their basements really flooding and no power to pump it out because there is no sump pump. I think tonight you wish you didnt have a basement. But we talked to a couple who does have a basement filled with water. You will see that a lot of the homes in that area unfortunately, its too dark to show you. Because we mentioned that this is a community that sees flooding a lot of the homes are on stilts. You see a couple feet of water that has filled up beneath the homes but has been able to pass through. Thats why the structures arent compromised, arent damaged as can be the case with homes close to the beach. These are people with the harbor on that side and the ocean on the other. They can withstand the flooding when the seawall is overflowed with water or part of it compromised, which is what happened earlier in the afternoon. There were some evacuations. Well see if theres more tonight. Alexandra field, in marshfield also took a pounding in high tide. This is what it looks like as the ocean slammed on shore doing serious damage in places that we speak. Brian todd joins us now. Youve seen dangerous conditions throughout the day. Whats it like right now at this hour . Anderson its still a driving snow and the wind is still a big factor here causing snowdrifts like this one behind me accumulated several feet above my head. You can walk up these things. These are all over town. The driving wind is still causing a problem with the storm surge with high tide coming in a couple of hours ago. You mentioned we were there just along the waterfront here in marshfield massachusetts, when high tide came back. It first hit at about 5 00 this morning. And right after that the seawall breached. At least 50 feet worth of that seawall crumbled and several homes got flooded. It got very dangerous. They had to do rescue missions people had to be evacuated with the help of the Fire Department and the National Guard getting people out of their homes along that area of the beach and seawall here in marshfield. We were there a few hours ago when high tide returned. Shot some of that video. We almost got taken out by the waves a couple of times. They were very violent. Its still a dangerous situation. What were told anderson, by officials is theyre still concerned because high tide will stick around for at least a couple more hours. Theyre worried that if the power is on in some of those houses that i think you and alexandra were talking about this in scituate. Same thing here. If the power is on in the houses and the water rushes in it can short circuit things in the houses. It can cause fires, a couple houses here burned to the ground a few years ago. When that happened. They are concerned about that as well. This is also an issue here. This has really been going on for the last several hours. These are whiteout conditions. This is a driving snow. But a wind its similar to hurricane winds in that they just swirl all around. You cant tell from one minute to the next which direction the wind is going to hit you with. That is a big problem. Whiteout conditions in this town are hindering the First Responders as they try to get to people get them evacuated. Get them to places like this. Im right outside of a shelter where some people have come for the night, anderson. Brian, its chad. Last night we saw you in a wind tunnel in new jersey. It was insane. Now youre in massachusetts. Tell me about your trip. Im flabbergasted that you actually got there. Describe what your trip was like. It was pretty harrowing at times, chad. It took us close to seven hours to get up here from new jersey. We were traveling all along the i95 corridor. I95 was like i had never seen it before. It was a frozen tundra. No one was on it. It was a ghost highway. Some stretches, they did a really good job of plowing it. But they couldnt plow it fast enough to keep up with the rate of snowfall. It was covered in snow as we made our way up here and it took us a lot longer than we thought it might. But we did get up here. Ironically of course as high tide was coming back to marshfield and that seawall. We got to that area it took us a little while just to get to the seawall when we entered town because the conditions were so treacherous. Just as we got there, it was at its most violent and it was very dangerous. Brian, im glad you made it. Well talk to you throughout the two hours. Jennifer bruno lives there. Shes an iraq veteran who believes in being prepared. Acting on the possibility of high wind and water, she loaded up a uhaul trailer last night, stayed at a friends. It was a good thing she did. She returned to a scene of destruction. You saw in the reporting. Shes in our news vehicle out of the elements. Thank you so much for being with us sergeant. The pictures of your house, the damage when you went back this morning and saw what happened shall tell us exactly what kind of damage there was. It was just structural damage and rocks all throughout the apartment. The part of the roof collapsed, the wall. My door was missing. Its destroyed. To see Something Like that i mean was it worse than anything you had expected . Yeah. Definitely. You know ive been through a lot. That was just more than i thought would have happened. I mean its really all i can say about that. I understand you went back. Take it one day at a time. You went back to get your National Guard uniform, is that right . My uniform, civilian clothes. It was i thought the roof might collapse in my bedroom. So thats how bad it was. So my friends and i, we actually just grabbed a few things some uniforms that were right there and a sword i got when i was in iraq and a cross with scripture on it that was hanging on the wall. What about family photographs, anything like that . No. Nope. Theyre there. Theyre still there. Do you have a place to stay now . Right now, im just staying with a family friend and one of my best friends err brother and girl friend will let me stay there. I have two cats. Theyre letting me stay with them for a while. The cats are okay . Trying to find a place. Yeah. I got them out last night. You know im so sorry for what youre going through. Im glad you have friends who are there for you. Youre able to get your cats in some of the possessions to cross. Sergeant bruno, thank you so much for talking to us. We wish you the best. Thank you. In a place said oh, look, this wasnt so bad for a lot of people. Its important to point that out. Theres real suffering out there tonight. When we come back more breaking news. New details about a terror attack in libya. David berry was among 12 People Killed in tripoli. Thats according to the Security Firm that mr. Barry was working for. Barbara starr joins me with the latest. Barbara, what else do we know about this american man who was killed . Anderson according to the company he worked for, a security contractor called crucible he was in libya working for them. Very Little Information available about how exactly he died. But it is said by the Libyan Security services this attack against the hotel began with that car bomb detonated in the parking lot. The attackers shooting their way into the hotel. But all accounts, according to some of the sources ive talked to the corinth i cant hotel, a luxury hotel in tripoli, wellknown to be a place where some westerners operated out of because it was considered to be somewhat safe, but potentially with westerners there, with a security environment in tripoli right now, it may well have been a target. What well be looking for is to see if some of the western Companies May be rethinking their security arrangements. A group that is said to be supportive of isis claiming responsibility for the attack. Again, under scoring that in tripoli right now, there is just a good deal of chaos. Anderson . Whats the u. S. Government doing about the attack anything . Thats a really good point. The fbi now investigating it as they do with the deaths of any americans who die in potential terrorist attacks overseas. They will be looking at it. They will be looking at the claim of responsibility and this claim is said to also involve a claim that this is retribution for the u. S. Capture of an al qaeda operative in libya some months ago. U. S. Forces captured him brought him to the United States to face trial for some charges. But he recently died of illness. Still, while in u. S. Detention in the United States. So the claim is it is retribution for al libis capture and death. Again, one of the issues where people make a lot of a claims, a lot of counter claims but very sad news for the family of this american contractor. In terms of this investigation, resources, the u. S. Doesnt have a lot in libya right now. Well that is absolutely true. The u. S. Embassy closed down several months ago, they evacuated all the military and diplomatic personnel out of that embassy. Literally in the middle of the night. It under scores the notion that tripoli really is a place thats not very safe for americans. You know people say its a pretty safe bet that there are some u. S. Intelligence personnel, perhaps some u. S. Special forces that go in and out. The u. S. Officially says it is still trying to track down any perpetrators of the benghazi attacks. So there is some intelligence work going on. There is some potential intelligence sharing, but the government in libya right now, so unstable so uncertain about the safety of the situation there that the u. S. Keeps a very minimal presence. By all accounts any u. S. Personnel rotate in and out of there. They dont stay put. Very dangerous. Barbara starr bs thank you. Sure. Ill give you more on the storm. Its not over yet. Its caused considerable damage. Chad mentioned at the top of the hour the storm is still rotating off the atlantic coast. Blizzard warnings in parts of new england tonight, including in portland maine, where George Howell joins us now. Whats it like there, george . Reporter its a lot of snow out here anderson. If you look out here you can see the snow berms are pretty high. This is not unusual now for portland maine. But at the same time it is a lot of snow to deal with. Really on the tail end of this storm system. So, what were seeing now, were expecting over the next two to three hours, the last few bands to come through here. When that happens, we expect the winds will die down a bit. The winds are pretty intense and right now were kind of in between snow bands. The last snow band came through just about five or ten minutes ago. Its been windy like that all day, right, george . Reporter yeah. I mean its been pretty intense. We got up here just about an hour and a half ago. You know when we got here the winds were really really high. Were in sort of a lull right now. Lets move over guys while this snowplow comes on through. I dont want anyone to get hit by the snowplow of course. What youre finding on the streets, no one is on the streets. Thats the good news. A lot of people are kind much heeding that warning to stay at home until all of this is said and done. George appreciate your reporting. Thanks. The blizzard is hitting nantucket off the coast of massachusetts causing power outages, serious flooding. Only 14 miles long. Less than 4 miles in width. About 15,000 people live there. The storm has cut them off completely from the rest of the state. William pitman is the chief of police and he joins me on the phone right now. Chief, i know its got to be a rough 24 hours in nantucket for you. What are conditions like at this hour . Caller actually we were just talking about that. We think its starting to improve out there. The winds are down a little bit and the snow seems to be less than what it was. Is the whole island still without power . Caller no. Weve got power restored to about 3,000 residents at this point, which is about a third of the island. Theres a lot of the eastern part of the island and up towards up that area where theres no power at this time. Do you have a timeline for when the residents who dont have power might be able to get it back . Caller well theres some areas in the central part of the island that were working on right now and we hope to get them on in the next couple of hours. Then about that time the crews are probably going to be done for the day because theyve been going since quite a long time. Then well resume tomorrow morning working out in the eastern part island and the northeastern part. Chief, i want to bring in chad myers. He has questions. Chief, im looking at the observations from nantucket. I tell you what you had gusts of over 60 Miles Per Hour for 17 straight hours. Have you ever seen anything like that on your island before for 17 hours straight . Well it was a lot. But i think what impacted us more is the steady winds which were reaching 50 miles an hour for a long time. That fatigued us. You were worried about flooding. Does that still pose a problem for residents . Yeah. We went through a second tide cycle with flooding. Many of the streets in the downtown area around the grant point hotel and down along easy street and stuff flooded again. This time we had people that had been in affected houses last night were out. We didnt have to go in with boats to rescue anybody. With that water damage to those homes, does that play a role in getting the electricity back on to other homes . It absolutely does. Those homes are isolated because they probably have damage because of electrical systems. Theyre isolated from the grid. Then they have thats what takes so long to get the power back on is once they got the power restored to the island they then had to start working on each individual circuit. First, they had to go out and correct all the faults, which theres a lot of them. Otherwise when they flip the switch they just light up the snow. That wouldnt work out too good for us. Chief, do you feel like this is the storm you expected like you knew this was coming or was it worse or better than expected . It certainly turned out worse. Two things were unexpected. The flooding was more intense and a lot higher than was predicted. And i think it was almost a foot higher than predicted. Then we were looking at a steady progression of weather forecasts that indicated that last night they would turnover to rain heavy rain as a matter of fact. That never happened. It wasnt until late last night that we realized that although it was 35 degrees, it was going to continue to snow. And thats when we really started realizing that we had a bigger problem than what we originally anticipated. We were prepared. But i dont know how anybody can be prepared entirely when you lose all of your communications and all you have your electricity. Thats challenging dimensions. Well as you said you live on a Beautiful Island and i hope you get power back to the rest of the residents who dont have it. Thank you very much. Thank you. Youve been charging through the snow up to your knees all day long. Whats it like now . Shes wearing the hat. Are you wearing that hat . This hat is saving me. Let me just say that. Ive got more twitter love on this stinking hat. You can buy it at the cnn store in atlanta. Let me get that out of the way. Yes, i have been trudging through the snow. Let me do this gingerly. Its up to my knees in parts. Weve heard from the mayor of boston. Marty walsh. He was saying two feet of snow so far definitely could flirt with that record from 2003. That 27. 5 inches. That is the number theyre watching for. Theyre saying it could possibly snow into 1 00 a. M. 2 00 a. M. 3 00 a. M. Its been coming down and ive been standing in it for the better part of the last two days. Were hearing from the state, theyre lifting the mandatory travel ban. That will no longer be in effect at midnight tonight. So 3 1 2 hours from now, you can get on the roads. According to all the officials ive talked to be so so careful. You can get around on the t and Public Transportation in boston. Tomorrow it will be open. A headsup theres a lot of snow out here and will be more tomorrow morning. Expect the delays. One take away if i may dip out of the camera shot and show you this. Watch this. That is how light and fluffy this snow is. Its freezing cold out here. I was hearing Something Like negative 2 with the windchill. Thats a great thing. We were anticipating power delays. Ooh, its winds i. That hasnt necessarily happened because its light snow you two. Its light snow. It hasnt broken any of the tree limbs to land on the power lines. Its cold but at least it isnt quite as bad as they were anticipating. But it could be record setting. Anderson . Brooke in sympathy with you im wearing this ridiculous hat as well. I wish i could see it. Im imagining. I feel like pippy long stocking with these braids. Are you jacked up on coffee . You seem remarkably in good spirits for someone who has been in the storm . I have a warm car and a red bull that hasnt been popped yet but is my emergency through the midnight hour. Theres a chance that boston will see recordsetting snowfall. Yeah. I mean 27. 5 inches thats what they saw in 2003. That was the most theyve seen in a certain period of time. If were around 24 21 to 24 inches now and its really still continuing to come down and just quickly do the math. If its continuing into the wee hours of the morning, theyre definitely worrying mayor walsh says this is not a record he wants to break but hes thinking it might happen. Public transportation is it still stopped there . Its totally stopped but it will be open tomorrow. If you want to hop on the t tomorrow you can. Againt could be slow going. Brooke thanks very much. We want to go back to sacco, maine. Wmtw joins us. Paul it looks still pretty bad out there. How is it . Reporter it is pretty bad. Getting around is really tough. The wind is really the story here. On the other side of this giant snowbank is an angry ocean. High tide came and went. Not a lot of damage. Im on a snowbank partially put here by plows. There are other spots with barely an inch. The wind is whipping things around. Some drifts 4 or 5 feet tall in maine. Folks in maine, used to snow. How are people coping with it . Reporter a lot of people have seemed to heed the warnings and stay indoors. We havent seen a lot of people out and about. Weve been at this spot most of the day. We went to go a half a mile south from here shoot storm damage. We spent 45 minutes with our news car stuck in had inches of sand and seawater. Took about six nice people to help us dig and push our vehicle out of there. Thats what youre dealing with when youre out and about on the roads. A lot of people are used to it. But a lot are saying its a bad one. Im staying home deal with it on wednesday. Is there a travel ban there or not . Reporter a lot of municipalities are advising people to stay indoors. Im not sure if theres an official travel ban at the state level. But people know what theyre dealing with. They know if its a regular storm or 6, 8 inches of snow in maine. When were getting 18 inches, 2 feet. If theres not an official travel ban, its best to stay indoors and not go outside if you dont have to. Paul merrill, i appreciate you being out there. Chad on twitter, people are suggesting im white walker from game of thrones, thats why i dont need a hat. You get a free bowl of soup with that hat. That is the tsa security checkpoint. Not even one passenger in line. The gates are down. The lights are dim. So that just sums up whats going on at laguardia and many of the countrys busy airports. Nearly 5,000 cancellations today. Thats more than yesterday. You mentioned there are going to be more cancellations tomorrow. But all of that said we are seeing some signs of progress. Looked bad last night. How is it tonight . Reporter anderson im happy to tell you its better tonight. Not seeing the whiteout conditions that i was experiencing last night when we were on the air. The temperatures about 19 degrees. It feels more like 3 degrees. The wind is 22 23 Miles Per Hour. We got word from the state that the travel ban has been lifted as of this afternoon. A lot of folks are out and about today. The roads are still pretty slick. Theres a lot of snow on the ground. I had a hard time getting around today just Walking Around. We had to dig our own car out, took a couple hours before we even left the hotel to check out the area. Heres why its so hard to get around. The snow is so deep. We brought in measuring stick just to show you and show ourselves just how deep it is. If you can zoom in leon about 26 27 inches there. Thats how deep it is around town here. Thats why a lot of folks are staying put. Its not so much fun trying to get around anderson. I understand some residents, wasnt only their cars were buried their homes were buried. Were they able to dig themselves out . Reporter yeah, their homes and cars. We saw snowdrifts up a full side of a home as we were driving around today. It was mostly a lot of folks trying to dig their cars out, actually today. Anybody who has had their home snowed in, they were staying inside hoping to stay warm with heat and a good fire. Those folks trying to dig their cars out, some of them told me theyve been doing this by themselves for 16 years because they have to park on the street. Another guy said hes been living here his whole life and hasnt seen a storm like this since 1977. We talked to a former department of transportation guy who said that this is one of the worst storms hes ever seen. Coming from him, thats a pretty big statement and he spent a couple hours digging out his truck today. Its a big effort. But the sun is supposed to come out tonight. Lets hope so. Thanks randi very much. The Hardware Store ran out of salt. I went out there, all i had left was sea salt. It didnt really work that well. Use a lot of it. I saw the people shoveling the cars out and it reminded me as you shovel your car out, dont throw the snow on top of the fire hydrant thats next to your car. Make sure you dig that fire hydrant out. If the police or the Fire Department need that fire hydrant, you dont want them digging it out for ten minutes. They want to find it and put out the fire. Always a good tip. The wicked storm thats still blasting parts of new england was basically a no show in other places predicted to take big hits including new jersey and here in new york. We heard the dire forecasts, roads and transit systems shut down, travel bans issued. Millions of people braced for the worst. The storm hit east of where forecasts put it. They said they could have done a better job in explaining uncertainties. He gave a shoutout to chad myers. Listen. Independently, some broadcast meteorologists did convey this uncertainty. Id like to commend cnns chad myers for his efforts to move the National Conversation away from a clearcut scenario to explain what a shift in the western boundary of the predicted snowfall could mean for this storm. We talked about this. First of all, thats nice of him to say. Thank you. We talked about this. There were several different scenarios. Several different forecasts. Several different weather computer models and two of them had typically done very well in situations like this. Were saying big snow for new york city. 24plus. Then the one outlier that just got improved millions of the taxpayers dollars improved this thing and no one really listened to. It was saying 8 inches for new york city and the others were saying 24. It was so dichotomous, we didnt know what to do. Divide by two or three. I was 10 to 14 inches all day. But i was afraid because im thinking what are these guys seeing that i dont at 24 to 30. Right. 24 to 30 models were based on where they thought the direction of the storm would go. Thats the problem. The two models that got it so wrong wrong and two that they listened to the most were closer to nantucket than the storm passed. If it was 100 miles closer, we would have what montauk has right here. Thats why we didnt get it because the storm moved farther away and took the snow to the ocean. Theres a lot more happening tonight. Were going to be on all the way to the 10 00 hour. Want to check in with amber walker. Good evening. 9 00 p. M. Here in new york. The storm that gave us a left jab is dealing eastern new england a vicious right hook. Not over there yet. Thousands now without power. The ocean rise up. Normal blizzard conditions like scituate which is partially evacuated. Seawalls collapsing in the surge before high tide. Here it is. The water over the seawall right now. Strong winds caused flooding all along. All the way up to maine. This video shows waves hitting york harbor. Winds on plum island massachusetts reaching 45 Miles Per Hour at points during the day causing huge waves to crash over their sea walls. Take a look at the ocean. It is churning. It is bubbling it is boiling. It has been like this all night long. More than 12,000 people on nantucket remain without power or phone service. Power is slowly being restored. The island is virtually cut off from the rest of the state. Ferry service suspended. Why its impossible because of whiteout conditions. Hasnt stop snowing in 24 hours now. Massachusetts has already been hit with as much as 32 inches of snow in some places. Eastern part of the state could see another 10 inches by wednesday morning. New hampshire was hit with more than 20 inches. Residents in portsmouth taking advantage of the blizzard with a huge snowball fight. Obviously, the worst of this storm, which is a blessing for new york city. We have an old saying we live by around here prepare for the worst and hope for the best. New york and new jersey missed the worst of the storm. Long island remains buried in snow. This time lapse video of the statue of liberty shows the 24 hours of the storm from 8 00 a. M. Monday to 8 00 a. M. Tuesday. Both states lifting the travel ban put in place. Several states declared a state of emergency that has claimed two lives so far. Theres a lot happening this hour. The tide came in and did not stop. Alexandra field is there in scituate massachusetts. We joins us there now. There was a lot of flooding there earlier. How is it now . Reporter yeah anderson. Really the wind is relentless right now. The big worry throughout the day has been the water. We had high tide in the morning and later in afternoon. Thats when the seawalls can be breached. Its just down the road from where im standing. These houses are covered in ice and theyre just being slammed by the saltwater. We saw it come crushing up over the walls. It was enough to flood out most of this neighborhood next to me. People saying they had 4 and 5 feet of saltwater in their basements, running under their houses which are up on stilts. Powerful to lift it up and leave it here. Buoys outside of this persons fence. Sign posts lifted up and tossed down here. Big pieces of wood. Really a dangerous situation if you were out here. A lot of times what they see here in scituate are these rock that come over the wall and the sea spray and the saltwater. At this point, the high tide has gone out. Were not seeing that same flooding. This road has now pretty much dried up and iced over as the snow continues to come down. But when we got out here earlier today, this road it was completely impassable. In fact the people in this house here they had to call for the National Guard to come and help them to evacuate. We spoke to the Fire Department here in scituate. They were getting a lot of calls from people who needed help getting out of their houses. Police were also coming through here in the high axle vehicles to see who was in need of help and who needed to get out. Certainly a lot of people on this street anderson who decided they were going to stick it out. They had seen flooding before but this was more than they expected to see today. I also understand that officials cut power to a lot of neighborhoods to prevent fires, right . Yeah. That goes back to the history of a problem here in this community. Back in 2012 march of 2012 they had a big storm, high winds carried flames through four houses right on the beach. The houses burned to the ground because of the storm. Firefighters were not able to get there to really salvage those places. The step was taken yesterday, the town decided preemptively lets just cut the power to a number of the communities here to minimize the risk of an electrical fire and minimize the risk of firefighters unable to reach them because of the floodwater. When we were Walking Around out here earlier in the day, you could see the backyards swapd swamped with water. That water covering a lot of streets. You could see the problem that they were so concerned about. Listen i appreciate you staying out there for us tonight. Thank you very much. Brian todd is a couple miles south in the town of marshfield which has been taking a pounding. Brian, when we checked in with you an hour ago, you had heavy winds and snows. Is it still snowing there . Still snowing, anderson. The winds are still an issue. A lot of drift here. This is how much its accumulated. This is a natural snow drift here. Comes down, lets see, to my knees on this lawn. Its deeper in some places. Again, the wind is a huge issue here. Whiteout conditions still hampering the efforts by First Responders and utility workers to get out and see how people are doing in the town of marshfield tonight. We know how people are doing by that seawall in marshfield. We got there as high tide was hitting for the second time today and captured a violent scene with the storm surge pounding that seawall for the second time. A 50plus foot section of that seawall collapsed during the morning high tide anderson. That flooded several homes. We have talked to people in that street on that street who had to leave their homes, had to be evacuated. Couple of people have lost their homes. At least 11 homes suffered very significant flood damage. Several people had to be evacuated. Thankfully no injuries to report tonight. But we did talk to people who say it was one of the most frightening things that they had ever experienced. Water surrounding their home. They felt like their house was basically in the ocean for certain moments today. It was just a very, very difficult situation. I heard you and alexandra talking about the fires. They did the same thing in this neighborhood of marshfield. They had to cut power there and thats because they were afraid of the storm surge of the flooding getting in and short circuiting some homes. They have the same problems as in scituate where homes burned down when wiring was short circuited by the flooding some years ago. That is still a huge danger. Theyre still getting high tide here anderson. Thats a problem. Chad inconvenient for people but better to be safe than sorry. Brian, do people go stay with friends or open warming shelters or schools . What kind much numbers are we talking about . I think were talking numbers, chad. Maybe between a dozen and 20 25 people had to evacuate. So not a huge number. Some of them took refuge in shelters around here in middle school that we visited. There were people taking refuge there. One lady we just spoke to is staying with her daughter here in this neighborhood. So some people are just right now assessing whether they can go back to their homes any time soon. We know of at least one lady some homes actually have been condemned. Those people cannot go back any time soon. Brian, i appreciate you being out there. Timothy mannix is a fisherman. He goes out and does battle with the sea. The sea came to him at home and nearly killed him. He joins me now. Timothy, can you take us through what happened last night. I understand you woke up at 10 00 to wait for the tide to come in. Yes, sir. I worked yesterday. Got home early afternoon and crashed for a few hours. Got up at 9 00 or 10 00. Made a pot of coffee hung around waiting for the high tide. At some point you blacked out. Was there anyone there to help you . No i didnt black out. I got whacked. Once the storm started to really hit, i took the animals and put them in the other room where theyd be safe. You know it was getting worse and worse and worse. The bedroom slider let go and i went out into the living room part of the house and i was pushing the dining room table up against the slider and whammo just like a lightning bolt. I think the center partition on the slider is what hit me. Hit me in the face here. I got a bunch of stitches and my nose is broken in half a dozen places. So i might have got knocked out for a couple of seconds. But i was on my hands and knees and saw the amount of bloodied. I said oh, boy, im in trouble here. I understand you tried to drive yourself to the hospital but got stuck . Yes, at the end of my driveway. It was all cobble. We have a lot of cobble here. Yeah the truck got stuck. So i had to 911. I mean, you were so lucky. I understand you were actually heard about your selfon the news when you were in the emergency room. That had to be surreal. It happened around 4 30 and it took another hour or so before a front end loader put me in the bucket and took me over to a fire truck in a humvee. The town has a humvee down here. They had to bring me to the other end of town and put me in an ambulance. Then i was waiting in the emergency room. Came on the tv that they got me me and evacuated me. Your dog and cat you put them in a safe place. Theyre okay . Yeah. As a matter of fact i called my buddy, im at his house now and said go get the animals. So him and his little girl went down and got the dog and the cat when the tide went out. You know saved them. Yeah. Its a scary night. I appreciate you talking to us. Im glad youre doing okay timothy. Thank you. Thank you for your time also. Very lucky indeed. Its always a quick reminder. Set your dvr and watch 360 whenever you want. Coming up in boston where they could break a snow record. Welcome back to our continuing coverage of the storm still hitting some areas hard. Been getting tweets from viewers suggesting i dont wear a hat. I look like a white walker from the game of thrones. We have supplied a picture now. Thats what it looks like. Im not sure its a compliment. I cant grow a beard like that guy. Anyway lets go back to boston where they have near record snowfall. Brooke baldwin is there for us. You have been trudging through the snow up to your knees all day long. How is it right now . Is it still snowing out there . Im sorry im laughing at you guys a little bit. I wish i had a monitor to have that vish um. Yes, anderson its still snowing. In fact you cant see but theres been a woman who has been jogging with a headlight on with a Boston Marathon jacket. How about that . Let me walk this way. Through some of the snow im walking toward this way, this is basically the north end of boston. Just over that way is the road. You see no one. Theres good reason for it. One big change weve learned in the last hour in three hours, midnight eastern in boston the travel ban will be lifted. You will be able to drive. So thats big for people in the city. Also mbta the t, the subway system in boston will be resuming tomorrow if you have to go back to work. Walk carefully here. Were walking through. Its about 2 feet in most places. And thats more or less what we heard the latest from the mayor here. But it could potentially break that record that was set in 2003. That 27. 5 inches. So people in boston watching and waits waiting for it. Honestly people who stayed in anderson its beautiful. Its absolutely gorgeous out here. Its boston. People know how to handle snow. What can i say . They sure do. Youve been looking at the radar. I know the travel ban will be lifted and you have the media exemption to be driving around. Thats why youre there. What do the roads look like . That doesnt mean people should go out because they can, right . No no. Not at all. Im glad you bring that up. The roads are we talked to the fire commissioner earlier who was all over the city. He said the public works crews and 800 or so vehicles had done a great job. He said the secondary streets, not so great. I think that will take another couple of days. If you do need to get out. Once that travel ban is lifted. So you are allowed to do so but that doesnt mean everyone should be crowding the roads. Also a headsup if you are trying to take the t tomorrow because of all the snow out here expect delays. That was also their headsup. Brooke baldwin, thanks. Lets look at that radar. Walk her through a little bit of what youre seeing . Sure this last arm still coming on shore and moving from east to west the wrong direction. Back on shore into boston. A lot of weather in america goes west to east and moves off shore. Because of the storm, its the last band almost like the last hurricane band that will come on shore or one. First bands that comes on shore as the pinwheel moves away. Eventually, all those bands will get to nova scotia newfoundland and all of that. For now, boston still in it for at least four more hours. Half inch an hour they break the record. Chad thank you. Contrast to the picture postcard beauty. Plum island massachusetts, bracing for a storm two years ago. Its a fragile barrier island. Major damage when a blizzard struck. Theyve been hit with high winds, high tide. Always a danger during storms like this. Bob connors is a resident. He joins me now by phone. Bob, i know the island has been hit pretty hard. Whats it like today . Weve had blizzardlike conditions most of the day with record tides and things are kind of winding down at the moment. Its still snowing. But the tide is receding. Its been a long 24 hours here on the island. Is there electricity . Was there flooding . We have some minor flooding. We were very fortunate unlike other coastal communities. Where we never lost our power. But we only had about 17 inches of snow. Thats kind of amazing compared to the 25 to 30 inches some of our other communities have had. I understand back in 2013 there was a storm and several homes were actually lost. Yeah. Back in march of 2013 we had a similar storm where the wave energy and the astronomical tides were just devastating. We were fortunate we didnt have the snow component. But six of our homes in our neighborhood were lost. Wow. Whats your biggest concern right now . I think right now its the worst has passed. Tomorrow things are getting back to normal. But its really whats the next storm going to bring and when its going to come. Im glad no ones home was lost. Chad is here with a question x bob. I want to chime in with you too. Because the new models looking at all day have another storm for next monday. Is that right . Thats a long way away i understand. Its a fiveday forecast. We dont make snowfall forecasts five days away. Theres another noreaster on the way. Thank you, bob. George howell in portland maine, for us. When we checked in last hour certainly a lot of snow on the ground. Reporter anderson so the story here is the wind and its the snow and plenty of snow. You look around, you see it. You see people walking here. Everyone really bundled up out here. The temperature over there, jordan, can we show them . 18 degrees. Its plenty cold. We understand they got 16 to 18 inches of snow here. Theyre expecting possibly 7 more inches of snow as the bands continue to come through this area. You know we expect here for the next two or three hours we could see snow. Chad its that final band we were looking at a few moments ago. Every time we think its a final band, another one shows up in the ocean. The radar doesnt pick up snow that far away like it can pick up a thunderstorm 250 miles from the radar site if its high enough. Snow doesnt start that high. Another band these bands could go all night for george for sure. They could get three or four more bands. George i appreciate you being out there for us tonight. More on this story and others. Long island took a direct hit. Well take you there next. Also ahead, a proud mom, her new little boy born in the middle of the blizzard. They were very close to the hospital but still had a difficult time had to call an ambulance, get the fire truck out there as well just to get them to the hospital which was just across the street. Details on that just ahead. Abe get in punch it let quicken loans help you save your money. Burn the witch the name your price tool a dangerously progressive idea. If you think youre cold now, look at these surfers in turtle cove in montauk today. They must have been freezing out there. Dont even get it. No matter how thick the wetsuit is thats incredible. Looks like theyre getting good waves. Long island got the brunt of the storm in new york at least. Some parts saw more than 20 inches of snow. A whole lot more in manhattan. Ana cabrera has been in montauk. I hope you werent surfing with those guys. That looked incredibly cold. Flooding a real concern for long island obviously. Reporter i have to tell you. I talked to the guy who shot that surf video and he told me it was epic today. The word he used. As those guys got out and the waves recorded up to 16 feet high. They were thrilled and now a lot of folks around here are simply breathing a big sigh of relief after the 24 hoursplus of those pounding waves, the whipping winds, the relentless snowfall. Things are finally calming down. Not before this place got buried under at least 2 feet of snow. Much of long island seeing 24 28 even 30 inches of snow here. Were in the far eastern tip in montauk. We know that there were snow totals around 28 inches. You can see im about kneedeep here. Of course theres also the drifting snow causing problems on the roadways. A lot of people are still holed up in their homes and have a lot of digging out to do here in the next couple of days. Theres still a little bit of snow flurrying action coming down here and every now and then we get a wind gust still seeing gusts up to 30 Miles Per Hour from time to time here and thats causing quite a windchill of single digit temperatures. Really cold out here. Dangerously cold. In fact we do know how one man froze to death in the long island area. A 17yearold boy also a victim who was out sweatledding and unfortunately, had a fatal injury. The worst is behind them here. A lot of people said it could have been worse. Fortunately, there was no reported flooding here in long island and no major power outages. So that is at least one positive anderson. Two fieatalities, just awful. Eastern connecticut did not dodge a bullet. It got pummeled. Heres what randi kaye found in new london. That is the sound of a neighborhood digging out. In this area of new London Connecticut, residents are buried in 2 to 3 feet of snow. Their streets, their sidewalks and their cars disappeared overnight. This is brutal. Brutal. Joshua jewel grew up here. He says its the worst storm hes seen since 1977. By the time we met up with him, he had been trying to dig out his car for nearly two hours. Every year youre going to get a snowblower. What happened this year . They said it was going to be a mild easy winter. Apparently thats not the case. Apparently not. And the snow just keeps coming. Some are too little to do anything about it on their own. This 5yearold isnt too happy about being snowedin. Why is it bad . Because, because you can fall in it. You can fall in the snow yeah. Its good that you have people helping you dig out, right . Yes. Do you want the snow on your sidewalk anymore . No. The only one happy about all this snow that we could find seems to be this eskimo husky who just couldnt get enough of it. On this road people havent even begun to start digging out. This snow is easily about 2 or 3 feet deep. And its on a hill. Whoa. For the most daring diggers, i dont think theyre ready to take this on. Im not sure how im going to get out of here. Stuck. On some streets, its the plows themselves that make it hard for residents to dig their cars out by pushing all that snow up against them. This woman says theres an art to digging out a car. Start from the top, she says and make a tunnel. I just start at the closest angle that i possibly can and i start digging until i get to the car. Youve done this before clearly . I have. I grew up in this area. Ive been living at this house for 16 years and digging myself out by hand. Luckily, susan garo works from home. But she still needs her car. She plans to spend three hours clearing the snow from it. Her pup bentley keeps her company. Are you digging out, buddy . With what are you digging out . Judging from your car, it looks like a workout for you. What do you think . You want to grab a shovel . No i dont. Thank you, though. I cant believe, her car was completely covered. By the way, randi, how did you get out of getting stuck in the snow like that . I assume your crew helped to pull you out. My crew did. Although our photographer leon kept recording it. Luckily my brave producer christina ventured in pulled me out. It wasnt graceful. Youll never see it on tv. I am up and about again. Im not the only one who got a helping hand anderson. A lot of people were we met an army veteran helping to shovel and plow driveways. Some people pay him, some dont. He does it out of the kindness of his heart. This guy chris, we met. Hes driving around looking for people who need help. Its really nice. One guy gave us great advice. Listen to your body and your heart. Thats what he told us. There you go. A lot of folks on the streets helping each other out. Did you borrow that coat from a yetti . You look tien any that coat . Where did you get that coat a sasquatch . This is a small. Im just telling you. I could model it for you. This is a small. I dont know. I think i need a new coat. Well see. Maybe our boss will buy us one. Cinch it. Put a belt on it. Hint hint. Randi. Thats why i shop at walmart. Im a medium. Randi, good luck to you. Hope up dont get stuck anymore. There were a lot of people stuck in connecticut last night. Gabby gonzalez had a good reason to venture out. She was about to have a baby. Heres gabby with emilio her blizzard baby. I spoke with her on the phone earlier tonight shes in new London Connecticut. Gabrielle, congratulations. How are you and emilio doing . Thank you so much. Were just tired. You were staying at a relatives house who lives near the hospital. You went into labor around 3 00 a. M. Last night, is that right . Correct. So then how did you get to the hospital . My god yes, sir, couldnt step outside. Our cars were completely covered. Doesnt dig out. We had to call an ambulance and the ambulance and the fire truck had to dig a pathway for us to get to the hospital. Wow. They actually dug a pathway. How long did it take to get to the hospital . Oh, my god. Luckily, we were across the road. Maybe ten minutes. Okay. Ten minutes even though you were just across the road. Thats incredible. Yes. I know you were hoping to get him to come before the storm hit. You were eating lots of spicy food. Is that true . I was trying everything to make him come early. But he wasnt budging. He was going to be a blizzard baby. I know you have another son, angel. Has he met emileio yet . No. Its still bad outside. We have to wait it out. He must be excited. Im very excited. Listen im so glad that emilio arrived and is healthy and youre doing good. When do you think youll be able to get out of hospital . Thank you. Hopefully by the time when the blizzard is over and they start shoveling the roads. When i went into labor, none of the roads were shoveled at all. Completely covered. Youve got a great story to tell him, hes a blizzard baby. Great to talk to you. Beautiful little baby there. The new England Patriots made it out of the area before the storm. Late word on a terror attack thats taken ten lives including an american. Details on that ahead as well. Theyre coming. What do i do . You need to catch the 4 10 huh . New details about a terror attack in libya. American contractor david barry was killed when gunmen stormed a hotel in tripoli. The gunmen and nine others also died according to the Security Firm that mr. Barry was working for. I spoke with Barbara Starr earlier. Barbara, what else do we know about this american man who was killed . Well anderson according to the company he worked off, a security contractor called crucible he was in libya working for them. Very Little Information available about how exactly he died. But it is set by the Libyan Security services. This attack against the hotel began with the car bomb detonated in the parking lot. The attackers shooting their way into the hotel. By all accounts according to some of the sources, its a luxury hotel in tripoli, wellknown to be a place where some westerners operated out of because it was considered to be somewhat safe. But potentially with westerners there, with the security it may well have been a target. What well be looking for is to see if some of the western Companies May be rethinking their security arrangements a group claiming responsibility for the attack. Under scoring that in tripoli right now, there is just a good deal of chaos. Whats the u. S. Government doing about the attack, anything . Thats a really good point. The fbi now investigating it as they do with the deaths of any americans who die in potentially terrorist attacks overseas. They will be looking at it. They will be looking at the claim of responsibility and this claim is said to also involve a claim that this is retribution for the u. S. Capture of an al qaeda operative in libya some months ago named al libi. U. S. Forces captured him brought him to the United States to face trial for some charges. But he recently died of illness still while in u. S. Detention in the United States. So the claim is it is retribution for al libis capture and death. Again, one of these issues where people make a lot of claims, a lot of counter claims but very sad news for the family of this american and contractor. In terms of the investigation, i mean in terms of resources, the u. S. Doesnt have a lot in libya right now. Well that is absolutely true. The u. S. Embassy closed down several months ago, they evacuated all the military and diplomatic personnel out of that embassy. Literally in the middle of the night. It under scores the notion that tripoli really is a place that is not very safe for americans. You know people say its a pretty safe bet that there are some u. S. Intelligence personnel perhaps to u. S. Special forces that go in and out. The u. S. Is still trying to track down any perpetrators of the benghazi attack. There is intelligence work going on. Theres potential intelligence sharing. But the government in libya right now so unstable so uncertain about the safety of the the situation there that the u. S. Keeps a very minimal presence. By all accounts any u. S. Personnel rotate in and out of there. They dont stay put. Very dangerous. Barbara starr, thank you. Boston has been hit hard by the storm. But new England Patriots fans sent the team off to arizona ahead of super bowl sunday with the celebration yesterday before the weather got bad. The storm of deflategate continues to swirl an president latest flurries reports that the nfl interviewed a locker Room Attendant who allegedly took footballs into a bathroom after they were inspected and before the game started. Surveillance video shows the employee in the bathroom for about 90 seconds. Joining me is Christine Brennan and bill road en. Bill could this have been done by a locker Room Attendant in your opinion and would they realistically do this on his own without being told to do it. The first question is yes, it could be done by him. No he or she would not do that without being told to do it. You know either by brady or by belichick. It was somebody. You dont do this kind of stuff on your own in that type of organization. In any organization really. Christine, do you agree with that . People say its relatively easy to let air out of a football but 11 or 12 in 90 seconds, does that seem feasible to you . It seems feasible only if you think you should be doing it. Even if brady or belichick didnt say do this obviously there was some sense if this in fact is the truth, theres some sense that the attendant should have done it and maybe this is something i need to be doing. I dont think you do this just become a rogue renegade attendant deciding to do this at this moment and not have some reason behind it from either the team or the feeling that youre doing the right thing. Its a pretty big game to suddenly go rogue and do this all on your own. The investigator that the nfl hired said it would be several weeks before the investigation is concluded. I mean, does it seem like a long time to figure out Something Like this that should be relatively simple . Its a long very long time. The nfl whats so perfect about this the symmetry is perfect. The nfl began the season with a scandal with ray rice and a Domestic Violence and ending with a scandal. It seems minuscule, ball deflation. I think its a horrible thing. The league has been under siege. Both financial and otherwise it put off the findings until after the super bowl. The bottom line for the nfl at this sundays game not finding out who deflated the patriots football. Absolutely. You do not want this to be the focus of the week even though it already is the focus of the week. If for example they were actually handing out punishment this week, the nfl, that would be a horrible distraction and you do not want to do that if youre the National Football league. This is a celebration of your season this week. It should be no surprise to anybody, im sure bill agrees on this. That theres not any punishment this week. I guess the only positive to take from the long investigation is that maybe they really are seriously going to try to get to the bottom of this. What i think all of us throughout the last week or so have had the tendency to laugh out loud or say wait a minute this is the integrity of the league as bill pointed out. Started with the ray rice video and ending with this. Still the continuing common denominator of the league and what can we believe. No this is something that they didnt want to have crash land into the super bowl week. It has. But they dont want to give out suspensions or fines this week. You know whats disturbing about this, anderson it is silly. A deflated football. Really . Whats problematic. From ray rice to Adrian Peterson to this is that whats most important to the nfl is the shield. Is maintaining the integrity of the shield over the rights of the individual which is what got him in the problem in court with what they did and did not dell athletes about longterm health risks of playing this game. Thats whats problematic. Not whether they inflated or not. But just this whole moral that the nfl continues to get them in deeper and deeper. No edge is too small to take. Great to have you on. Christine brennan as well. Thank you. Thank you very much. Theres a lot more happening. We have the 360 with Football Players have been convicted on all 13 charges of a campus rain. How are things . Well pretty tough, anderson with the wind being horrible for the First Responders to get around town to make sure that people are okay. As of 2 30 this afternoon, anderson 24 mchs have fallen and so you are look agent well over two feet of snow. And i am walk manage the drifts right here, and you are looking at the high tide pounding the seawall here which is what was happening when we got there earlier and shooting the video when the high tide was coming back and that seawall of course it has bneen a big story with it reaching at least a 60foot section of it clachsing ingcollapsing leading to flooding for some home, and it was so bad that first respopders needed a front end loader to get into one house to save an injured man. They fwot one mangot one man out, and no significant injuries reported, so that seawall breach has drien people out of their home and some homes have been condemned. You have some people who have lost their homes, and we le try to get back tomorrow to see what the damage s but significant flooding from the breach of the seawall, anderson. Incredible picture ss, brian. Being out there in the field to report on the snow and it is not for the faint of heart. For some reason storms stir up the unexpected. Take a look. Yes shgs, it is just snow, but a gust blew me over. And now, this is never going to be a the wind gusts are we have 60mileanhour gusts up here at e stony brookew stony brook, and everybody is having a great time out here with the snow and we brought this handy dandy thermometer outside, and it says 38 degrees, so i am done with this thing. And the new york subway system has been shutdown for the third time because of snow. Only a couple of other times shutdown due to hurricanes and most rekrentcently Hurricane Sandy and of course cancel cancel brian. Let him go. Okay. Are you okay . Okay. Fine. Brian, your shot is upside down can you turn it around for us. Hey, brian, can you flip it around . Okay. Perfect. Yes. Thank you. How did that shot get upside down . That is going to do it for us. Cnn with don lemon starts right now. Don . Thank you, anderson. No snow, but it is a lot colder than last night. Cnn with don lemon, and new york city is coming back the life here and almost 24 hours after the blizzard after what it was not all cracked up to be in the big apple at least, but not the same in most of new england which is under siege. Boston is in the grips of a wicked storm that is breaking records. Nantucket is cut off from the mainland and struggling to get the lights back on for thousands of people while coastal new england is bracing for the storm surge. Tonight, we will talk to to a new mom who gave birth to her daughter right in the middle of the blizzard. Meantime right here in new york
