That are are ongoing right now where great leaders who have the trust and faith of their congregations and communities and neighborhoods are having tough conversations and saying violence is not the answer. We are a peaceful city. We will Work Together moving forward. [ inaudible question ] i am still incident commander. Im still in charge and the structure flows from there. [ inaudible question ] when can you expect it released, you shouldnt expect it to be released. As far as my reaction to it, i will be updating based on new facts that we have. You will get that update later on today. Im not ready to give that yet because theres still a lot of questions that i have and a lot of information that needs to be vetted first. [ inaudible question ] the big thing were doing different is we have several hundred additional assets to protect the structures, the businesses, and our personnel and we are going to be a lot more proactive. We made 44 arrests last night because we are not going to tolerate the behavior. Now we have resources to better protect the infrastructure so that we can be a lot more proactive in going after the criminal behavior. Absolutely, maam. Several hundred more people. Yes. We will take two more questions. Reporter you said several times today that safety is the highest priority [ inaudible ]. What do you say to people, how do you assure them the same thing isnt going to happen tonight . I think you heard the chief say very clearly we have Additional Resources on the ground that we are working on as new Strategic Response will ensure that safety, every situation is volatile and we will do as much as we can to ensure that safety. We cant guarantee, not knowing what incidents will happen, what groups will be gathered, but we have every confidence that we are going to put the resources in place that are required and needed, and it is my sincere hope, i reach out to the community, i ask for continued conversation, all those leaders who have reached out to me personally, you are amazing and the message you are carrying about nonviolence. I have faith that we will continue to progress. [ inaudible question ] we have seen social media that has made those invitations. I dont have any way to evaluate how much that was a part of what went on. We will continue to get information on that. Final question. Reporter im curious how you are planning to work with businesses that have suffered damage, losses, those kind of things. They should be expecting us to have these conversations right now. We are aware of those businesses. They should also see that increased presence as soon as we start seeing people misbehave, they will see an increased level of that presence and they will see us much more proactive to start locking criminal behavior up so that we dont experience the damages that we had last night. [ inaudible question ] i think i answered that question as clearly as i can right now. Thank you all very much. Thank you all very much. Thank you all very much for coming. We are investigating all of that, sir. All of that. Thank you. John berman along with kate bolduan, watching a News Conference from charlotte, North Carolina. Mayor Jennifer Roberts along with police chief putney updating the situation in that city after a night of violence and protests. There will be an increased Law Enforcement presence on the street tonight. That was a big part of what they said but also a couple other major headlines. Number one, the family of mr. Scott, the man who was killed by a Police Officer, has requested to see the video of this shooting and the police chief indicated that they are looking to accommodate that request. Also, another big headline coming out from the police chief, he says the video that he has seen in his words, does not give absolute definitive visual evidence that would confirm a person was pointing a gun. That may be a very big point of contention and a very big part of the conversation Going Forward. He also said that at this point they do not see the need to shut down the city or put in place a curfew as they anticipate events. Or release the video publicly. We should say that, too. They want to accommodate the familys request but no plans to make whatever Video Evidence there is available to the wider public. Facing tough questions about that. Lets discuss this, kind of what we just heard in this press conference, in this update, with the former mayor of philadelphia, mayor michael nutter, who is joining us now. Mayor, we wanted to get your take on how you think the citys handling this so far. Well, kate and john, thanks for having me. Obviously this is a tough and complicated situation. I do want to say i think that mayor roberts and chief putney, with regard to accommodating the familys request to see the video, absolute right decision, and you know, the chief described what he saw and you know, if the family sees the same thing, it may not provide them with any definitive closure to what has happened but at least they will have the opportunity to see the same thing that the chief has seen. These kinds of situations are the toughest. They are the kinds of things that mayors all across the country worry about every day. Any of us know that on any given day, in any given incident, things can quite honestly go sideways or haywire and you can end up in one of these tough situations. So as the chief indicated, there may be an outside investigation which in this kind of circumstance, is the appropriate way to go. I dont know the rules in charlotte or in North Carolina or what the federal government may require if the feds are the outside third party to investigate. On the one hand, you need to follow the rules and regulations. On the other hand, obviously the public and the media want as much information as possible. Mr. Mayor, as you head into thursday night after two nights of violence there, we learned that they have no plans as of now to institute a curfew, although the chief said its something they may do later on. What goes into a decision like that, and do you think its something that should be done . Theres too much advice on television but that is a tough call, and you know, they are going to have much more information on the ground certainly than any of us would have in our conversation. But i think after seeing whats happened the last couple nights, anticipating now with the state declaration, state of emergency, National Guardsmen, state troopers, i understand, or highway patrol, those officers, bringing in that level of additional Law Enforcement engagement will unfortunately possibly inspire some to do even more things. I think as the mayor indicated, she said a lot of conversations are taking place right now with many, Many Community leaders. Im sure they will have more discussion about what they should really do for late this afternoon, early evening and they may want to revisit a lot of that discussion and decisionmaking. Making sure that the public is safe. Making sure that the officers are safe. And then of course, property and property damage, et cetera, et cetera, are all the factors in trying to make that very very tough call. I think Public Safety always has to be the number one leading choice in terms of that decision. Mayor, stand by. Lets go to brian todd, our correspondent, who was in that press conference there in charlotte. Brian, you were there and you heard obviously even more of the questions than we could hear because there was some, you know, you couldnt hear them off mic but the mayor and the police chief faced some very tough questions about why release, why not release this video to the public. Reporter they faced very tough questions about that. My colleague nick valencia and i pressed them on it repeatedly. They are not going to release the video, they have no plans to release it publicly, they say their policy is not to release the video. At one point, the chief hinted that he may have a third party individual look at it and maybe try to disseminate that for the public but he was noncommittal on that. We pressed him on that as well and he basically said dont expect the video to be released. We pressed him, look, just tell us whats on it if you can. He wouldnt do that. My colleague nick valencia said his team interviewed an official who looked at the video, who said there was a clearly threatening move made by Keith Lamont Scott that afternoon, and that he had an ankle holster. We asked the chief about that. He wouldnt comment about any of that. The headline here, they are being very closemouthed this morning about whats on the video and they do not plan to release it. The chief also notably saying that he does not plan on using the curfew but he will leave that open later on, he may have to make that call later. We are wondering just how much later he would make it because it seems like they were late in asking for assistance from other Police Agencies as well to come in and help quell the violence overnight. Brian todd, stand by from that briefing room. Want to bring in art roderick, cnn Law Enforcement analyst, former assistant director of the u. S. Marshals service. We heard from brian right there, sources were telling cnn that Keith Lamont Scott made some kind of threatening move. Thats not exactly what the police chief said just there. What he said is he looked at the video and there was no absolute evidence he saw that mr. Scott pointed a gun. Is there an important difference between seeing him point a gun and having a gun . Well, if he had the gun in his hand and even though he didnt point it, to me it makes no difference. Unfortunately, we have heard some conflicting views of what is actually on this video. We have one official saying he made a threatening move initially when we heard the chief come out a couple days ago, i believe there was reference to a gun in his hand. So im not quite sure if this video, the release of the video is going to answer any questions at all or raise more questions. I think really, i think the chief is in some of the speakers i have heard earlier are probably correct that even if they release the video at this point its not going to make any difference to what happens in the city of charlotte and to the community at this point in time. Would it have would the release of the video earlier on done something . I dont think we are going to know the answer to that question. A lot more questions swirling right now than there are answers. Art, if you can stand by as well. We want to go to Paolo Sandoval who has been following this story from the beginning. He has new information about Keith Lamont Scott, the man who was killed by police. Reporter right. It can at least help us build a better picture here of keith scott. We can now confirm after taking a closer look at Court Records that scott did in fact have a criminal history. He did serve time after being convicted of aggravated assault with a Deadly Weapon and also evading arrest. A closer look at the Court Records showing that scott actually pleaded no contest to shooting a man in texas back in 2002. A judge eventually sentenced scott to seven years in prison for that assault charge and about a year in prison or so for that evading arrest charge. We are discussing this for two reasons. Because it now tells us that scott did in fact at least have a past as a violent or at least a violent conviction in his criminal history and it also is important here because state law prevents or at least it calls it unlawful for a convicted felon to be in possession of a firearm. We now have several versions now suggesting that there was a gun at the scene, that mr. Scott did have in his possession. Obviously that would be important. It does not, however, justify the death of this individual by any means. This is simply one of several pieces in what is a very complex, very emotional puzzle here. The other piece of course, that video that we may not necessarily ever see publicly. So this again, its important to keep in mind we now know keith scott did have at least a violent past going back to 2002 when he was convicted of aggravated assault with a Deadly Weapon. But john, as you well point out, this is a very sensitive issue, when a record has come up in the past regarding someones past record and what has happened to them in the present. Lets put that question to cnn Law Enforcement analyst, cedric alexandr, who joins us right now. You heard that report from polo but the fact of the matter is, we have no evidence that the police who pulled into that parking lot had any idea what keith scotts past was. We have no notion that they had any idea that he had been a felon and shouldnt have a weapon, if he did. They had a warrant for someone else. Thats not why they were there. That does not speak to their state of mind when they pulled that trigger and shot him, does it . No, it does not. Let me say this. Being a chief of Police Administrator in this environment is very tough and certainly its tough there for that chief in charlotte and across the country. But when we start to receive information about someones criminal past, we have to be very, very careful when we insert that information because it comes across as being defensive. We dont want to come across as being defensive. Thats exactly what you guys are alluding to. Thats what you oftentimes hear, people in the community say. We have a case involving a subject but then somehow, the criminal past is brought into play. Now, in terms from an investigative point of view, that is could be certainly very relevant information. However, when we are trying, through the course of this investigation, where its being viewed out here in the public both in charlotte and across the country and around the world, when you insert that type of information, you have to be very careful to separate it from what we know happened up to this point because the perception is going to be from a group of people who are very frustrated, very angry, very mad about whats going on across the country and quite frankly, very frightened because inserting that is to say hey, he was a criminal anyway, and he may have had a criminal past but we have to look at the relevancy of these cases and when we insert that information. So that everything maintains a sense of balance and transparency. Its important, what he was or was not doing at that moment and what the police there were or were not doing at that moment. Cedric alexander, important context. Thanks so much. Thank you. Lets go to ryan young, on the ground in charlotte. What are you seeing . We have heard from the governor that he was going to be mobilizing the National Guard. Where is the National Guard presence . Are you seeing it now . Reporter we havent seen them just yet. We are told they will protect infrastructure and they will show up en masse so some of the things that happened last night will not happen. What we have seen is heavy Police Presence you can see at almost every corner. We have seen them grouped and gathered and people have been talking to them saying hello and you have seen discussions between the Police Officers. One of the things that sticks out to us, you still see people walking down the streets with signs like this. They want to make sure their voices are heard. This has not gone away in terms of the conversation thats being had in this community. Then when you think about a building like this that was looted, you can see how this store was damaged and the people who were inside, who own this place, they have had this happen to them before. In fact, it happened to them while they were in l. A. Now they have had this happen again. People from the community have actually shown aup and tried to help. Talking to someone else who was trapped inside a bar last night, he said they thought they heard gun shots and had to lock the door. About 25 people got down on the ground and made sure they were safe for the night. Once again, the conversation is still happening in this city. People are kind of bracing themselves to see what will happen overnight. Could be a long night again. Ryan young in charlotte, thanks so much. Athletes around this country are front and center in the discussion about Racial Justice and policing. Next, one of the most popular sports figures in charlotte on the tension tearing apart his city. Also this. Africanamerican leaders in washington say they are fed up, getting ready to march to the department of justice to demand more be done to stop this violence, stop Police Shootings in their community. We are safer when communities respect the police and police respect communities. We are back following the breaking news out of charlotte, North Carolina. Lot of moving parts today. The National Guard mobilizing on the ground there, wanting to restore peace after a second night of violence hit that city. Police in riot gear overnight firing tear gas, rubber bullets to disperse crowds. Protesters were seen smashing windows, looting stores, setting fires on the street. Charlottes police chief just spoke moments ago and said that so far there have been 44 arrests. Nine civilians injured, at least five officers requiring medical care. Joining us by phone is retired nba legend Tyrone Muggsy Bogues who lives in charlotte now. Thank you so much for being with us. I just want to say this is your city. When you were watching these pictures last night, when you were getting word of these riots taking place, on your streets, just let us know what you were thinking. I was really sad. This is not the city that i came to in 1988. This was a city that was really growing nowhere near to where we are today. Its a diverse city with all the Economic Growth that we have over the years with the Charlotte Hornets coming here, the city has grown tremendously. I was really saddened to see the violence take place in the city. I have been affected twice now. My city in baltimore with the freddie gray situation and now whats going on here in charlotte. You tweeted this about whats going on in charlotte. You wrote a lot going on in the world, we need to start with basic respect for one another and be kind. With respect to charlotte, what does that mean for both sides here . Basically that, understanding what the means are at hand. People are angry, i understand that. People in our neighborhood, you want transparency. Theyre tired of our young men being gunned down as opposed to having the opportunity to be heard in trial. You have also got to look at the police how they do their job. I have a nephew, i have a cousin thats a detective. I have cousins, i have aunts, nephews, who are out in the street trying to live a day to day life. When you see this type of stuff that goes on, it just affects me and makes me sad because whatever happened to, you know, innocent until proven guilty. Too many things are happening, too many lives are being lost without being any explanation. I know people have a job to do but people need transparency. People are really angry, people are tired of our men being gunned down without any, you know, people being reprimanded. I know this has got to be hard for you. As you said, you have family members on both sides of this line. It really shouldnt be a line thats on the streets. We do appreciate your time here. What do you think you can do now to try to improve the situation there . Only thing you can do is try to educate, inform and just try to get both voices to be heard. The Community Needs to be heard. Theres nothing wrong with people, nonviolent protesting to let folks know we need a change. And it needs to be done. The folks thats out here looting, out here causing the violence, thats a different type of protesting thats happening. These folks are angry because of other issues possibly and then they are creating situations that compound the situation. We all just got to sit down and hear one another. We are human beings first. Theres no color. We are human beings. When are we going to get back to having human rights being heard, regardless of the color, regardless of industry, regardless of status, we are equal. No one is more superior than another no matter what your title is or the job that you have. You still are an individual, you still are a human being, you still should have respect for whomever thats in any type of situation that needs help. You speak such a strong message. Some of the activists on the ground involved in this are calling now for an economic boycott to have their voices be heard. They say they need to speak with their pocketbook. One activist said that since black lives do not matter for the city, then our black dollars should not matter. Do you agree with that . Well, you can look at anybody can make a stand to try to what is that going to help . Not being able to go out there and feed your family, not being able to go buy food. If you want to take the dollars into whatever community, whatever you want to spend, thats your right. But we just need a solution, not being divided. We need people to sit down and say okay, i hear your point, i may not agree to disagree but we have an idea to get to a point to where we can make life better for everybody. Everybody. Why do we need to sit here and start dividing, we need to do this, we dont need to spend our money in this community, we dont need to go over here and no longer be part of this. We are still becoming divided again. Why not we just can find a system that works for everybody . Its not that difficult. Its times where policies may not work in the past, we got to revisit them and just look and see what the data is showing. If the data is showing certain things in terms of where its not working, then why not have a conversation and fix that . Having a conversation is not difficult. Finding answers may not be terribly easy after everything we have seen go on in this country. Its something that athletes have begun speaking out about a lot. Colin kaepernick really leading the charge in the nfl, not standing, now kneeling during the national anthem. Do you support that . What is the role, do you think, of athletes in this Going Forward . Well, again, you got so many things thats happening in the world, people are picking one athlete because they use a platform to stand out on certain things. Man, we respect the flag. We respect, you know, the national anthem. A lot of things are happening and how people display how they want to respond to it, thats their right. But im not going to go one way or another and judge anybody. Im not in a judging stage. Im in a stage of trying to find a solution, you know. We are picking on that one incident. Its a lot of things that happen in this world thats not right. Theres a lot of beautiful things thats going on in this world that is right, that we need to also stress and continue to let, this is a wonderful america, a dream, to where i had the opportunity as the smallest basketball player in the world to dream in america, to think that it is possible and it was able to be possible for me. So this is a great america. Im witness to the first africanamerican president who i am so proud of that to be here and not even thought that i would be on this earth to witness that is amazing. We have come so far. We got so much work to do but we have come so far and why we cant keep building from that. Why people got to just look at individuals and look at what this man was trying to do and trying to diminish all the good, all the good that he was trying to instill in america. Maybe he dont have the answer for everything but he had the right intention. He has the right intentions about human rights. This is not about color. Its about human rights. To see someone on that platform to be eloquent, who can spit out the words intellectually and try to put this thing on a global platform, not just as america but as a global, to have peoples rights to be heard, diplomacy be heard, democracy be heard, thats something that we should be striving for. But no, we sit back and we criticize instead of we help. Maybe its not, im not a politician. Im not in the political world but im all about common sense. Im all about rights for everybody. Rights for everyone. As much as weve come and the disparity between the rich and the poor, its no way that we should not be doing so much to up those ones that are less fortunate. As you talk about the basic respect for one another here on the ground, as we look at images from overnight, it seems that it is exactly what everyone can hope is the first step to calming what were looking at right now in charlotte, in your city. Muggsy bogues, thank you for your time. Thank god. Thanks for having me. He was saying he was the smallest nba player ever, maybe smallest in size but the guy has a giant heart. You could hear it in his voice, that heart is breaking. Sure sounds like it. The Police Shooting in charlotte has so Many Community leaders there outraged and members of congress are demanding change right now. They are outlining their demands in a new letter. The income of airbnb really helped to mitigate the stress. But we have that flexibility of knowing that if you know things get worse, we have this to help keep us afloat. So thats very, very important for us. In just a few minutes the Congressional Black Caucus is planning a march in washington to protest the recent Police Shootings of africanamerican men. We have been covering of course the violent protests that broke out overnight in charlotte, North Carolina after police shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott, the man there. North carolinas governor has declared a state of emergency, said he was going to bring in the National Guard to restore order. Let us bring in right now ohio congresswoman joyce badey, member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Thank you for your time. Do want to get your take. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, you will be marching to the department of justice to demand more. What more do you demand . Yes. We are going to march today to the u. S. Department of justice because we know that we can no longer just have community meetings. We cant be silent. So today is to let the American Public know that we want to make sure that the u. S. Department of justice is engaged. We want to have independent investigations going into these communities so we take away all doubt or perceptions of the biases. We are losing too many lives, too many africanamerican boys, men and girls are being killed and its an epidemic. This is our first way of saying that the Congressional Black Caucus wants america to know that we are going to be fully engaged, not only in North Carolina but in ohio, in tulsa, all across the United States. Congresswoman, we heard from the police chief in charlotte who says at this point he has no plans to make public the video of the incident where Keith Lamont Scott was killed. Do you think thats a good idea . How much transparency is needed in this investigation . I think right now, we cant do business as usual. Right now, the country is in an uproar and we have an epidemic. I think transparency is of the utmost. I understand the legalities. I understand that you have to have a full investigation. The families are asking people to be nonviolent, to make sure that we dont put get anything in the way that will prevent us from getting to the truth. But i think we have to be transparent. I think right now, america is in an uproar. Africanamerican leaders, africanamerican communities are begging for help. This must stop and we must be fully engaged. We have to be on the same page with the Law Enforcement, with the Legal Community and with the grassroots community. We no longer can have isolated groups speaking without us being united. As you mentioned being on the same page, at this point, do you not trust the Charlotte Police to handle this investigation . Do you not trust the investigation thats going on right now . I dont think its only the trust issue. I think it is the appearance of fairness. If this were our only case, but when you repeatedly have 13yearolds, 20yearolds, ending up at the end of a gun, whether it is africanamerican to africanamerican, whether it is a white Police Officer to a 13yearold, we cant say we are going to do what we did four years ago or five years ago. We must be in this together and we must be fully transparent. Congresswoman, thank you so much for your time. Really appreciate it. Want to make sure we tell our viewers donald trump is expected to speak about the riots in charlotte, the protests there and the violence there just moments from now. We will listen in in a second. It needs the spirit of togetherness that has not really only got us through our toughest times, and we have had some tough times, but which has lifted us up in the past to our greatest achievements as a nation. Every day i see people of different backgrounds working together for a common good and we need to bring that spirit to every part of our country, and become one american nation, united by shared values and principles as american citizens. We have to do it. We have to respect our flag. We have to respect our flag. We all have to walk a mile in someone elses shoes, see things through their eyes and then get to work fixing our very wounded country. I mean, we have some real problems and we do have a wounded country. Many americans are watching the unrest in charlotte unfolding right before their eyes on the tv screens. Others are witnessing the chaos and the violence firsthand. Our country looks bad to the world, especially when we are supposed to be the worlds leader. How can we lead when we cant even control our own cities . We honor and recognize the right of all americans to peacefully assemble, protest and demonstrate, but there is no right to engage in violent disruption or to threaten the Public Safety and peace of others. Every single american in our country is entitled to live in a safe community. The violence against our citizens and our Law Enforcement must be brought to a very rapid end. The people who will suffer the most as a result of these riots are lawabiding africanamerican residents who live in these communities where the crime is so rampant. Its their jobs, housing markets, schools, economic conditions, that will suffer and the first duty of government is to protect their wellbeing and safety. We have to do that. There is no compassion in tolerating lawless conduct. Crime and violence is an attack on the poor and will never be accepted in a trump administration. Never, ever. Our job, our job is not to make life more comfortable for the violent disrupter, but to make life more comfortable for the africanamerican parent trying to raise their kids in peace, to walk their children to school and to get their children great educations. We have to cherish and protect those people. For every one violent protester there are thousands of moms and dads and kids in that same community who just want to be able really to sleep safely at night, to be able to walk on the streets, to be able to go to the grocery store. More Law Enforcement, more community engagement, more effective policing, is what our country needs and we need it quickly. Last year, we saw a 17 rise in Violent Crime in our 50 largest cities. Homicides are up nearly 50 in washington, d. C. And more than 60 in baltimore. More than 3,000 people have been shot in chicago so far this year from january 1st. Can you believe that. Nationwide, approximately 60 of murder victims under the age of 22 are africanamerican. This is a National Crisis and its the job of the next president of the United States to work with our governors and mayors to address this crisis and save africanamerican lives. Look at the example that we had in new york of mayor rudy giuliani. Tremendous person for me, friend of mine for a long time and a big endorser. Big, big endorser. The policies he put into place ultimately brought down crime by 76 and murder in new york by 84 . Think of how many families these policies saved from the worst heartache imaginable. We need a National Anticrime agenda to make our cities safe again. We have to make our cities safe again. We will appoint the best prosecutors, investigators and federal Law Enforcement officers in the country to dismantle the international cartels, gangs and criminal syndicates and i will stop the drugs from flowing into our country and poisoning our youth and many other people. And if youre not aware, drugs are a very, very big factor in what youre watching on television at night. My administration will work with local communities and local officials to make the reduction of crime a top priority. Safety is the foundation of the ladder to american success. A great education and a really good paying job. We have lost so many of our good jobs to other countries. We are going to be bringing them back right here to pittsburgh, to pennsylvania, we are going to be bringing them back to ohio, we are going to be bringing them back all over the country. They are coming back. They are coming back. These trade deals and the people, i think well have to have harold ham negotiate a couple trade deals for us, folks. To have the best schools and the best jobs, you must have safe communities. That means we must recognize the contributions of our police, who come from all backgrounds and all walks of life and who often thanklessly risk their own lives to protect innocent people, many of whom they have never met. We all remember earlier this year when officers in dallas hunted down for execution, continued protecting the public until their last moments on earth. They were killed. Every day, Police Officers risk their lives for really complete strangers and in every year, many of them will go out on calls and never return. Its tough being a Police Officer. And its hard now even recruiting Police Officers. Its a tremendous problem. Police are entrusted with immense responsibility and we must do everything we can to ensure that they are properly trained, that they respect all members of the public and that any wrongdoing is always and it will be by them vigorously addressed. Has to be. But our men and women in blue and you know this, the men and women in blue need your support. They need your thanks. And they need your gratitude. They are the line separating civilians and civilization from total chaos. Theyre also the front lines of defense in the war on terror. As we saw recently with their quick action following the terrorist attacks in new jersey and new york. And the offduty Police Officers. You saw the heroics of the offduty Police Officers in minnesota. An amazing job they did catching this horrible person so quickly. With how do you do that, they figured it out. And within a short period of time, they were able to capture him. Who could do that. Thats tougher than finding a whale, i will tell you, right. In addition to providing safety, we must provide economic opportunity. That begins with School Choice and leads to a secure job with a rising income. This brings us to the subject of energy. Producing more American Energy is a central part of my plan donald trump in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. Hes supposed to be speaking about energy, but as you see hes speaking in length in his scripted speech about the violence that has broken out in charlotte, North Carolina. Speaking in very measured tones. Talking about how we are living in a wounded country. Also, having a message of talking about africanamerican parents who just want to raise their kids in peace, walk their kids to school. Also noting the tough job that Law Enforcement face. Really a onetwo punch here, a different juggling act. He also said how can we lead when we cant control our own cities. Theres no right to engage in violence disruption. Joining us now, cnn executive editor of politics, mark preston. Very different donald trump weve seen over the last two days. Since this latest round of protests have sprung up over Police Shootings of africanamerican men. Donald trump expressed what i think and observers think is much more sympathy and empathy for the africanamerican victims of this. We heard a little bit of that right now. On the other hand, we did get the law and order donald trump. A lot of people were surprised he wasnt as forceful yesterday. Speaking out on behalf the heme and women in uniform. Saying we have to respect them. Understand theyre on the front lines of terror. Quite frankly, if we dont respect them, theyre not there, were going to go into lawlessness and chaos. But donald trump i wouldnt use the word cleaning up necessarily but certainly was trying to emphasize something a lot of people thought he should have done yesterday. And that has maybe been lacking in his message. A different donald trump than we were hearing. We really started hearing yesterday. It continues today. Interesting, interesting moment. Coming up for us, thank you so much, mark, coming up for us, black lawmakers will be marching to the department of justice in washington over the Police Shootings across the country. A new opinion piece in the Washington Post has this message for the ethics lawyers of a President Donald Trump administration. Good luck. Two former white house ethics attorneys richard painter and Norman Eisman write this. Counsel for a president Hillary Clinton would have to address actual and apparent conflicts posed by the Clint Foundation but those have been disclosed and publicly vetted. They are nowhere near as obscure, profound and dangerous as trumps. Painter was the chief white house ethics lawyer under george w. Bush. He has endorsed Hillary Clinton. Thanks so much for being with us, sir. You have concerned about conflicts of interest that donald trump might have. What are your biggest concerns . Well, i think there are two things that donald trump needs to do to address financial conflicts of interest. First, he needs to disclose his tax returns. And he has not yet done that. We need to know what loopholes hes taking advantage of. Which provisions of the tax code benefit him. Because hes going to have a substantial influence other the tax code as president of the United States. We also need to know where his income is coming from around the world. He has investments all other the world. How much of the income is coming from the United States and how much is coming from outside the United States in places like china and mexico and all over the world. The second thing he needs to do is divest all of his Business Empire and get himself and his family out of it. It does not work for him simply to turn management of the trump business entities over to his son or his daughter and retain ownership. The conflicts of interest are way too vast. Thats interesting, because on that point, he along with his kids dont thing that is a problem. Donald trump has said he will put his businesses in a blind trust and his kids would run it. They all think that is fine. Why is it not . From your ethics standpoint . Well, theres nothing blind about turning assets over to your children when you know what the assets are and then having your children manage the assets. Thats not blind at all. Its like putting a diamond ring in a shoe box and pretending you dont know its there. A blind trust is a very different situation. Sell all the assets for cash, turn it over to a trustee. And the independent trustee invest it in something else. And thats not what hes talking about here. Do you worry though this sends a message to other businesspeople or folks in the Business Community who might want to run for president one day . Does this preclude the possibility of other business men who may not have as many ethical issues for trying for the white house . Not at all. We have many very successful businesspeople come into the Bush Administration for executive branch positions. They are required under federal law to avoid financial conflicts of interests. It would be for them a cripp offense to create a conflict of interest with their job and the government. Weve recruited very many successful businesspeople. The president of the United States should behave himself or herself in the same manner as the other members of his or her administration. Can you very quickly just sum up why this should matter to the American People . Well, the American People should care about having a president whose loyalties are first and foremost to the United States. And to the people of the United States. Not to his or her own business interests. And the president should disclose where he or she is getting their income. Whether its coming from the United States or elsewhere in the world. And we should know that. And we should also know that the financial conflicts will be avoided. Thank you so much for joining us, appreciate your type, sir. Thank you so much for joining us at this hour. Legal view with Ashleigh Banfield live from charlotte starts now. They just started shooting tear gas. Oh, man. Oh, my eyes.
