I want to get straight to the breaking news out of gaza this morning. A hospital has reportedly been hit. Our ian lee is in gaza with the latest. We have Martin Savidge in jersey though. What can you tell us about this strike, ian . Reporter the situation is very fluid right now, but what i can tell you is what were hearing from the tv, a hamas run television station. They are saying that ten people have been killed in an air strike and that 40 people have been injured. We cant draw many conclusions from this because we have a team on the ground there now, but this is coming from a hamas television. Ive been to the hospital, its a large hospital, its the main hospital here in gaza. There are many different buildings that make up this compound but around it theres also people taking shelter from the fighting here from the war. When you look, every little corner, theres a tent, a mattress, people sleeping, children running around. So if there is an air strike that hit the hospital, theres going to be a lot of questions especially since hospitals are not legitimate targets during a war, but we cant draw any conclusions yet. I need to stress that enough i cant stress that enough because we do not know exactly what is the cause of this explosion, but there are a lot of people there were looking at pictures that are coming to us live from there. A lot of people injured, a lot of dead, a lot of questions right now, john. Lets turn to Martin Savidge. Hes standing by in jerusalem and obviously this comes on the heels of the attack on that u. N. School that was being used as a shelter in gaza. Has there been any update from the Israeli Military on that attack . Theres been no update on the current one. We are anticipating there is going to be a statement from the idf to either deny or in some way explain what is going on currently in gaza, but regarding that event of last thursday, which was the attack that took place on the United Nations school in which 16 people were killed and hundreds of people were injured, israel is now saying that, yes, there was one of their mortar rounds that went off course and went into the Center Opening compound of that particular school. Of course, they said they didnt do it intentionally, they also say they have video from a drone that says to them there were no one in the courtyard at the time of that incident and that as far as they know, nobody was injured or killed. That goes directly against what witnesses on the ground are reporting, so there is a lot of conflict back and forth whenever you have these explosions, these strikes that take place because both sides begin pointing the finger at the other. It just increases the level of distrust that is already running extremely high, michaela. Weve been seeing pictures coming from gaza, from the hamas run Television Network there from the hospital complex. Hamas is saying it is struck and there are several people dead and it is claim several of them are children. We do not have this confirmed ourselves. We are headed there to find out what we can. Ian lee who is in gaza for us. While this is happening, israel continues to point out the existence of these tunnels dug from gaza to israel. Ive seen estimates of 31. Ive heard also as many as 36. These tunnels have one purpose and one purpose only. Well, thats right. They are made to infiltrate into israel, to send commando units really behind lines and to raise havoc and they have been used quite successfully that weve seen. If you compare what this war to the last war where we saw the Israeli Military move into gaza, that was in 2008, 2009, ten soldiers were killed in that war alone. Now theres four times that number. Hamas has been weve seen them use superior tactics than last time. Weve seen them use heavier weaponry, more sophisticated weaponry. They were prepared better this time than they were in 2008 and 2009 and thats whats really bogging down the israelis when they try to move down into the gaza strip further, but israel has said that during these lulls, during these ceasefires that we have seen, that they are going to continue to target those tunnels and they see those as one of the major threats one of the major threats to israel. The other being the rockets. Two of the things that they are going after. Going after these tunnels, israel says is working it despite whatever International Pressure they are facing. Oureeian lee in gaza and Martin Savidge in jerusalem. Our wolf blitzer went inside. He has an amazing report to show you. Thats coming up at 1 00 p. M. Eastern right here on cnn. Both israel and hamas are ignoring International Calls for a ceasefire as the death toll rises on both sides. More than a thousand palestinians have been killed, 3 4 of them civilians, including more than 200 children. Israel puts its death toll at 43 troops, two civilians and an aide worker. The failure right now to even accept a brief humanitarian pause under scores the difficulties in securing a permanent ceasefire. I want to bring in our military analyst, Rick Francona. One of issues, the reason they have not been able to reach a compromise, neither side sees it as not in their interests. Hamas, the fight itself seems to be the success. What are the conditions they want for even just a humanitarian pause . The israelis say well agree to humanitarian pause but were going to stop right where we are and were going to continue to look for the tunnels. The palestinians say, well, we can have a ceasefire but you have to withdraw back to the border. Those are two die metrically opposed situations. Neither one are going to happen. They are talking past each other and not to each other. Thats been an ongoing issue. Weve seen this time and time again. I want to talk about the u. N. Shelter, a school. 16 civilians dead in gaza. Israel released a video. Its kind of a grainy video that the military is called an errant mortar shell saying what they thought was an empty courtyard at the school. What do you see that were not seeing when you look at this video . This is drone footage and you can see that round goes in. Now, it comes almost straight down. That is a mortar and they say it was an errant mortar round and i have no reason to doubt that. I mean, it did right square in the middle of that courtyard though and they say it was empty. It look empty from here but we dont know whats down there on the ground. The israelis would have been better serve it was a mistake. It was an errant round. If people were injured or killed, they should just apologize for it but to dig in and say there were no people there, they dont know that. If you look at hamas now, as compared to where hamas was more than 20 days ago, hamas was as an organization struggling with all the conflict in the middle east, they have lost their allies and egypt and syria was no longer paying attention to them because they have their own problems. Now it seems in some ways they are stronger than before. And this presents a problem when israel deals with them as there tries to be these negotiations. There was a key u. S. Official, a Defense Intelligence agency, Lieutenant GeneralMichael Flynn at this point israel needs to be careful because if they damage hamas too much, something even worse could spring up in their place, Something Like isis. The animosity is so great that something will rise up. Will it be islamic jihads or worse than hamas. It goes throughout gaza. What were seeing throughout the region is increased recruitment, isis, al qaeda, they are all gaining from this, they see gaza rising up against israel. Its interesting, overnight, the character of all of the social media changed and now its us and gaza. Everybody is now united with gaza. I think there will be repercussions for this not just for israel but for all of us as we have to deal with this jihadi surge. The question is how to deal with it effectively and without further violence. I dont see any hope right now for whats going on in gaza because the israelis, they are willing to take the International Condemnation as long as they can get into those tunnels and destroy those and hopefully destroy the rocket arsenal. I dont think they have the capabilities to do either in the time they have allotted. Colonel Rick Francona, appreciate you being here. The fight for the control of flight 17 crash site in ukraine has investigators really have to turn back on their way trying to get there, and then theres this. Your attitude is really something, sir. Were out here good morning. Settle down, captain happy. You heard it there. Tense moment between a Delta Airlines pilot and an air Traffic Controller in atlanta. You are going to want to hear it again. Its coming up next. Hey. Im ted and this is rudy. Say hi rudy. [ barks ] [ chuckles ] id do anything to keep this guy happy and healthy. Thats why im so excited about these new milkbone brushing chews. Whoa, im not the only one. Its a brilliant new way to take care of his teeth. Clinically proven as effective as brushing. Ok, here you go. Have you ever seen a dog brush his own teeth . The twist and nub design cleans all the way down to the gum line, even reaching the back teeth. They taste like a treat, but they clean like a toothbrush. Nothing says you care like a milkbone brushing chew. [ barks ] looks like were about to board. Mmhmm. Im just comparing Car Insurance rates at progressive. Com. Is that where they show the other guys rates, too . Mmhmm. Cool. Yeah. Hi. Final boarding call for flight 294. [ bells ring on sign ] [ vehicle beeping ] whos ready for the garlic festival . This guy bringing our competitors rates to you now, thats progressive. At this hour, pro russian rebels say ukraine has stormed the wreckage site and is now in control of part of the area. Were still awaiting for comment from kiev and other international investigators. While this is happening, another valuable day is slipping away from investigators. Dutch and australian experts were headed to the crash site. They had to turn back because of the heavy fighting cht the team was hoping to recover more of the wreckage after they negotiated with both pro russian rebel and Ukrainian Forces and they thought they thought they would have safe access but that apparently did not happen and will not happen today and the fighting it seems could only get worse before it gets better. Ukraine now saying russia sending more troops to towns near the border many retired Lieutenant ColonelRick Francona back with us as is safety analyst david soos si. Rick, were hearing the Government Forces have gun to take control of the crash itself, part of it, some of those key areas there. Will that be helpful to investigators . I think so because they have a vested interest in this being exposed as something that the pro russian separatists did and not them. So they are going to want to have the investigators there to back up their side of the story to say it wasnt us. It was these guys who had access to a russian sa11 and not us. Time is of the essence. When you look at the fact that were 11 days post the downing of mh17. How compromised is this site . We dont know what further molestation of the site if you will, of this crime scene, deemed the largest one in the world right now. I think the world of the crime scene damage is over right now. The investigators the elements and all that other i spoke to investigators yesterday. This is really quite a setback with ukraine. They had a written agreement, malaysians did with the rebel to have access to the site and now ukraine has come in and said no we want access to the site. They all want to do the right thing but the timing is wrong. What do you make of this . The investigators had a deal with both the pro russian rebels and Ukrainian Government for safe passage. It didnt happen and it may very well be the ukrainian Government Forces the ones that the u. S. Is more or less supportive of that have been more of the acongressers today and over the last 24 hours. Should these investigators trust these guarantees . Well, the fact word has to get down to the lowest level and that could be the problem. I think theres a whole lot of confusion out there. Remember, this is a war zone. Theres active fighting going on and they have push the separatists out of this area and they are trying to push them back up toward an enclave near the russian border. They probably are still moving and im hoping they havent gotten the word down that that particular sector yesterday and yet and when they do, the investigators will get in there finally. And you say there are so many different factions among the separatists. It makes it very difficult to get communication in and clear consensus. So david once they get in, because we know these inspectors are going to try again and they are going to try until they get in their safely, thats a concern in and itself. Once they can get to work, how quickly do they need to act . They need to get in there very quickly. Focus on the front of the aircraft, the encoding of the trans responder at the time of the accident. They need to go to the west site, where there are bodies, im looking at areas that have not been tread upon. Theres still some human deceased on those areas, so they really need to focus on those and get those deceased out and get a piece of that aircraft, a piece that shows shrapnel thats been transferred on to the aluminum and that is the hard evidence that they will need to prove this case. Is that a case of hours or days . It should be just a case of maybe a day or two to do that, but ideally, you would want at least a week there. They are not going to have that. You say they want to focus on the aircraft, thats the area the rebels were going through with chainsaws a week ago. Who knows what they are going to find. Lets talk about as an airline passenger, you know, you kind of want the pilot and the people in the air Traffic Control tower to kind have a good working relationship, right . Listen to this Little Exchange that happened recently between a controler and a delta pilot in atlanta. I dont have an attitude. Im just saying you join lima instead of mike, and im trying to correct you before you stay in lima. Theres a plane out there six miles attitude. Your attitude is really something sir. Were out of here on mike. Good morning. Settle down, captain happy. You heard a third voice there. Another pilot was getting on the line too. Delta is investigating the tarmac tif further. My opinion is this, we work in a business where a lot of things are said in raised tones and four letter words never here. I dont care what the attitude is in the workplace my god man, theres another plane on the tarmac. Its not about bruised feelings in cockpits. Haetd for us at this hour. Were also watching the Ebola Outbreak as it spreads in africa. Another american aide worker has been infected. Were going to tell you what you need to know. Another american aide worker has is. Concerning sights there, protesters from paris to berlin have been marching in the streets against israel actions in gaza. Some some cases, those protests have been nasty, targeting all jews. In paris, protesters have attacked sin agoings sin agaug. German officials have concerned about this antisemitism at these protests. Max foser joins us from london. Theres a difference between anti israel or israels actions in gaza and being against jews in totality, but some of the lines seem to be getting blurred here. They do. The politicians have desperately trying to balance freedom of speech and criminal behavior. There are acceptable demonstrations, anti war demonstrations, pro palestinian demonstrations taking place but on the frinchs theres some particular nasty language coming out and theres concern it could escalate. Last week, we had the Foreign Ministers of france, italy, issuing a joint statement to say they are going to do all they can to combat this anti semitism here in the u. K. Issued a statement saying its to our collective shape that antisemitic send ments have been out there. What is actually being done . Anything substantive . Any action being taken . They launch an inquiry in the u. K. , a parliamentary inqirly. Actually finding an incident and nailing it to anti semitism can be a problem. They same the number of aanti semitism attacks have doubled in the last month. They notice the increase in muslim anti semitism. The attacks are appearing to be carried out by people who are muslim. Thats a very worrisome in the u. K. In pairs, they are banning demonstrations. People should be able to demonstrate and because of anti semitism they are not able to. We do have breaking news on the conflict tweel israel and hamas. Over the last self minutes, weve been showing you pictures of the hospital complex in gaza, these pictures showing some damage and some people clearly hurt there in this flext. The question is who fired whatever hit that complex, well now we have a statement finally from the Israel Defense forces and they essentially say it wasnt us. Lets go to martin sanch now in jerusalem. Martin, what can you tell us . Reporter thats right. Its a brief message but it does come from the idf. They are essentially saying it was not a strike by israel that caused the explosion there at the hospital in gaza city. What they are saying it was was apparently a rocket attack or an attempted launch of rockets against israel that fell short, so they are essentially laying the blame on hamas saying it was a rocket that was being fired meant to hit israel but instead fell short. They will not say how they know that. That is the brief statement thats been given out so far. At the same time this event has been going on in gaza, Emergency Services in israel, near gaza say that there has been a mortar strike coming from gaza and hitting israelis. It is said to be quite serious. There are unofficial sources now, Israeli Television that are reporting that there are a nun of a number of casualties, including four dead and six wounded. Again, cnn is working to confirm that number, but that would be a very serious attack that is apparently coinciding with the timing of the events that are going on in gaza. John. Martin, stay on this for us. We want to get more details as soon as we can. The idf is denying that they struck this hospital in gaza. Saying it was an errant missile from hamas. No response from hamas. We want to return now to africa. Weve been disturbing news about american aide workers that are on the ground in iberia. A second worker has tested poft. Both dr. Kent brantley, and nancy wrightbol. Health Officials Say the current Ebola Outbreak that started in guinea and in other african nations say it is the deadliest ever. These americans likely knew how do all the things supposedly to protect themselves so how do they end up with ebola . This is a very experienced group so it make it very dush disturbing how it happened. We just dont know. There are a couple of possibilities. Let me be clear. Im not saying this did happen. Here is is it possible that their gloves tore and thats how they got ebola . Is it possible that it is incredibly hot in all of that protective gear that they are supposed to wear and maybe people are trying to cut corners, that sometimes happen. We do know that ebola is spread with contact with bodily fluids. Its not as if someone sneezed that wouldnt have done it. Both have been working there since 2013. The within thing that was really great to know this dr. Brantley, he sensed there was something wrong, and he isolated himself. They are saying getting quick treatment and diagnosis is really key. But talk to us here about the spread. It is spreading so quickly, why is that . What do we know . One of the reasons its spreading quickly is really human behavior. Health authorities are going out to places saying look if you have these symptoms, isolate yourself just like this doctor did but people are not trusting the government and they are not trusting hospitals, and thats really causing problems. Elizabeth cohen thank you so much. This is a story were keeping an eye on. We need to be aware about this and care about this. In two hours, well know more about a tentative deal to reform the v. A. Just days before the Congress Goes on its august recease. It is expected to address short and long term needs of the agency exposed by cnn and the waiting list scandal. Not a done deal though. Crisis rarnlinging oversees this hour, israel, hamas, iraq, isis, russia ukraine. Just how do americans think the leader of the free world is handling all this mayhem. A recent cnn poll shows if voters had the 2012 elect to do over again, they would put mitt romney in the white house. Look at that, 9 point margin. Theres been some criticism of the president for doing some fundraising while these fires have been raging. Listen to what his former secretary of state Hillary Clinton said about that. Charles krauthammer said the world is going to hell and president obama is playing golf. Is he playing too much golf while all these crises are coming up . No, i think thats an unfair comment to make. I know from my own experience with the president , where we worked so closely together and as i write in the book went from being adversaries to partners and friends, that he is constantly working and thinking, but he also wants to do what will make a difference, not just perform. Were joined now by political commentato commentators. Bernard, you know, generally speaking in this day and age, Foreign Policy rarely drives approval ratings. Usually its the economy. Iraq affected george w. Bush over time. Do you think the Foreign Policy issues, do you think this is dragging down the president . I think theres no question its dragging down the president. I think what the American People are frustrated with is less how hes handling but the result. I think americans like to be in control situations. We like to think we can actually run the world and we cant. There are a lot of things that are out of our control, iraq, the palestinian situation, whats going on in ukraine. I think what we can be happy about and support the president on is the fact that here weve got someone who actually taken the time to reflect, strategize, consult with allies. I think we can applaud secretary of state kerry for what hes trying to do in gaza and i think with respect to russia for example, weve got to be very vigilant because there are shades as i said for a number of years of in putin, signs of hitler and i think we have to remember and recognize that 75 years ago, germany invaded poland and i think we need to keep a very strong watch on where putin is going with respect to to ukraine. I think of the laundry list that i started out this segment out with. There is so much unrest going on in the world. We were thinking earlier in the show i dont know theres been this much of intensity conflict around the globe happening simultaneously. We saw the results of the poll. Could mitt romney have been doing any better of a job . Its certainly true that mitt romney talked a number of things during his campaign. He talked about the threat posed by russia. He talk about many issues that actually have come back to bite us. I think he certainly did anticipate many of these crises and his view was that its very important for the United States to be very consistent because that creates a stability of expectations for our allies and i think there is a concern that this president has sometimes for example drawn a line in the sand and then not actually responded as forcefully as he had intended or as he had projected and that actually does not reassure our allies in many cases. You know, it is interesting because this cnn poll, we also asked the question who would you vote for if the elect was today and it was between Hillary Clinton and mitt romney and the results, wow, i mean, little Hillary Clinton just crushes mitt romney. She beats him by 13 points. To me, that says its personal. They are reject being the voters in our poll, the president not necessarily overall democratic policies. The voters are looking forward to 2016. Americans ten to be very impatient. The president has been office in for six years. They are weighing their options for who is going to be president. Hillary clinton presents the most formidable opponent that the republicans could face. The one thing thats in her favor her call for more bipartisan ship. There will be time to talk about 2016. I think a lot of it. First, we got to talk about the now and the crisis at the border. So guys stick around. The big question now, will they or wont they . Congress has got five days before they go on their month long recess. Will they reach some kind of agreement on how to deal with this border crisis . Welcome to a new project. This is a new channel that really is a lot more than news. Sarah palin lawrnlinging her on line channel. Shes taking on the mainstream media. Were taking a look at it ahead. To combine solar and natural gas at the same location. During the day, we generate as much electricity as we can using solar. At night and when its cloudy, we use more natural gas. This ensures we can produce Clean Electricity whenever our customers need it. Time is running out for congress to take action on the border crisis before leaving for the august recess. They have like four and a half days left. Tens of thousands of children have arrived from Central America since january looking for asylum. A white house official says it will be alarming if lawmakers dont approve the request for emergency funding. Joining us once again are our political commentators. We kept them seated. Well start with you. Any chance, any chance that well get any sort of border bill passed before the august recess . Im skeptical because there are a variety of different positions that are very hard to reconcile with each other right now and the fundamental issue on the republican side is that think about what happened with the Senate Immigration bill a few months back. What happened is because of some of the president s steps on obamacare in terms of how he was implementing the law, there was this belief if we pass this law, we dont know how the president is going to actually implement it. That contributed to a lot of the distrust around a measure like this that is being pushed in this fashion. I dont get the politics for either side. How doing nothing could be better than doing something . Even a not great something in this case seems better than nothing. I agree with you. I fault the Senate Democrats for being intransigent on changing the laws. What i think will happen by the skin of our teeth is to get a funding bill passed weve got to provide more money for processing and to aw lor these deportations to happen and its unfortunate. I think the president made a good step forward in his meeting with honduras. I think any time we can get the middlemen out of this, the human traffickers who are exploiting these families and children thats a good thing, but i think we got a long way to go. The House Majority whip said hes going to stay working. Lets move on to another topic i know youre eager to talk about, sarah palin. Her own tv show. Creatively called the sarah palin channel. Shes saying shell give an alternative to mainstream tv here, speak the truth. You think theyll give fox news a run for their money . I think media entrepreneurship of any kind is healthy. Its great to have different voices out there. It is worth noting that fox news serves a somewhat older audience. Youre looking at new startups, glenn beck among others. I think thats all good. We need the competition. Not necessarily her biggest fan all the time. But i think that, you know, she could do some good. Lets talk about sarah palin in general, shall we, because sarah palin has been one of the people over the last several weeks suggesting that president obama should be impeached. Ive said that and there are dozens, if not hundreds of Establishment Republicans yelling at me pointing their fingers at the tv screen saying no ones talking about impeachment except people like sarah palin and democrats for whom this is actually a political opportunity. I guess back to palin, bernard, does she help democrats . Are you glad sarah palins out there talking . I actually thought she was hunting moose from a helicopter, Something Like that. My theory is this. She wants 9. 95 per month for scrubbers. Ive got netflix for 9 a month. I think id have a better value watching house of cards on netflix. She is so yesterday and the day befores news. I cant imagine anybody is taking her seriously or listening. You say maybe this will reach a new audience, this new media landscape, acquiring younger demograph demographics. With know certainly the Republican Party is looking to broaden the scope instead of the Republican Party of years past. Is sarah palin the one thats going to get those eyes . Would i make a largescale investment with my life savings in the sarah palin channel . Wait for it whats the answer . Probably not. But, do i celebrate eithvery pen out there trying a crazy idea . Yeah, i do celebrate those people. Entrepreneurship. There are people counting sarah palin out for a long time. On impeachment, our poll found 35 of people, only 35 of people, support it. The vast majority think its a crazy idea. 35 is still a lot of people. There are people out there who support what she says. Its enough people to completely derail the republicans chances. I was around for when the republicans successfully impeached bill clinton in 1998 which, what did it do, it led to the biggest defeat for an Opposition Party in the sixterm Midterm Election since the civil war. I would say thank you, sarah pal palin, bring it on. Thats why democrats are out there talking about it, fundraising off it. More certainly than most elected republicans in either chamber of commerce right now. Great to have you. Been fun having you. Thank you. Ahead at this hour, sorry, i should have warned you about that squeal of excitement. Just too much excitement for this poor pooch to take. New moments moments ago, secretary of state john kerry speaking on the ongoing situation and turmoil in gaza. He was speaking from the state department. Lets take a listen. You all know i just returned from the middle east. And from paris. Where a series of discussions aimed at deescalating the conflict, ending the rocket and tunnel attacks against israeli civilians, and easing the suffering of innocent people everywhere. In gaza, in israel, in the west bank. Today, we are continuing to work toward establishing an unconditional humanitarian ceasefire, one that could honor eid, which begins now, and could stop the fighting, allow desperately needed food and medicine and other supplies into gaza, and enable israel to address the threat which we fully understand and which is real, the threat posed by tunnel attacks, and to be able to do so without having to resort to combat. That is what could come from a ceasefire. We believe the momentum generated by humanitarian ceasefire is the best way to be able to begin to negotiate and find out if you can put in place a sustainable ceasefire, one that addresses all of the concerns. The longterm concerns as well. Begin to talk about the underlying causes of the conflict in gaza. Those obviously will not all be resolved in the context of a ceasefire, a sus sttainable ceasefire discussion, but its important to begin to build, move in a process, and thats what were trying to achieve. Thats the only way ultimately this conflict is going to be resolved. Hopefully if we can make some progress, the people of this region who deserve peace can take one step towards that elusive goal by stopping the violence which catches innocents on all sides in the cross fire and begin to try to build a Sustainable Way forward. We also believe that any process to resolve the crisis in gaza in the lasting and meaningful way must lead to the disarmament of hamas and all terrorist groups. And we will work closely with israel and regional partners and the International Community in support of this goal. So we continue to have these discussions. Our discussions over there succeeded in putting a 12hour humanitarian ceasefire in place. Watching secretary of state john kerry talk about the efforts to find some ceasefire arrangement between hamas and israel. Well hope those efforts continue. Thats it for us at this hour.
