Flooding is picking up cars, carrying them away. Rescuers had to move quickly on this. Well show you more of this dramatic scene ahead. Hello, everyone. Good to see you on this wednesday. Those stories and so many more at this hour. How is this for a headline . 1. 2 billion passwords stolen, not just passwords but user names as well and not just stolen by anyone but stolen by a russian gang. Happy wednesday, everybody. Lets get beyond the headline a little bit. It is possibly the biggest heist of stolen Digital Credentials in history. I want to turn to our cnn money tech correspondent lori segall and aholex holden. You both are at, conveniently enough, a hacker security conference, so you are the two people to talk to about this very issue t al. Alex, it was your company that uncovered this breach. How did that happen . My company, hold securities, works on behalf of our clients and scours the internet trying to find where the hackers kotal about sharing stolen information. This is what we do and we know that this particular gang is doing some nefarious activities in very high volumes. So, lori, im still a little confused here. We hear 1. 2 billion user names and passwords. Thats a lot. It seems that either im affected by it. Youre affected by it. Hes affected by it. So what does this exactly mean and what are these russian gang members doing with these passwords . What this means, first of all, everyone should be changing their passwords. We need to take more safety p precautions. Apparently right now theyre using this for fishing attacks. You might get something for a weight loss pill that they click on and then they have your information and they collects a fee. Where this gets scary is if they start using this information and selling it on this black market, this dark web, where they sell your information. People can take your email address, they can take your user name and passwords and figure out a lot about you and this is where you face things like Identity Theft. I will say we are at this conference where this is the kind of thing thats talked about. You bring together the security researchers, these hackers, who oftentimes find these vulnerabilities that Big Companies ignore to a degree and security researchers oftentimes i like to joke that they have these skills like batman. They are use their hacking skills for good or bad. The ones who use it for good go to the companies and say i want you to fix this and oftentimes the companies ignore it and thats a problem. Heres the problem that i have with this. The websites, they say from fortune 500 companies to small websites. That doesnt help me as a consumer much to know, alex, that if i went to one of those websites am i potentially a victim, could i have been targeted. How are folks to know that we have been hacked . Absolutely. What we are trying to do is create the way for the individuals and the companies to communicate back to us and ask if they have been compromised. Its a very difficult task for us to reach out to half a billion email addresses that were affected. Its just an impossible task. So we are asking for the companies and individuals to come to us and we will be able to answer that question for them once we authenticate who these people are and make sure they are asking questions about their email addresses or websites. I read in the new york times, lori, that these gang members, these mobsters, are also stealing information from people in russia. Its not like theyre just picking on us or countries outside russia. So what do we do other than, as you suggest, hire some of these bad hackers and make them Design Systems that cant be hacked . I think we need to call on our companies to do a little better. You should be changing your passwords, sent up authentication where you have to go through a couple steps. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but we were just talking and he said a lot of these fortune 500 websites, a lot of these companies, the vulnerab s vulnerabilities are out there. We need to operate with caution. Were reaching a brink where we need to, as consumers, call on our companies to do a better job protecting us. If this is the case, this has gone on a couple years with all of this information stolen and it could be used even for worse than these spamming attacks. Were talking Identity Thefts. Thats why the importance of these Convention Like the one youre attending. Thank you so much for letting us know about your company uncovering this breach. I think what youve learned here is john berman is awesome isnt going to work on your passwords anymore. John berman is awesome 1 or exclamation point. The point is we have put some notes online for you if you want to do yourself a favor and protect yourself from becoming a victim of cyber crime. You can go to our website i believe, cnn. Theres actually a quiz called the can you outsmart a hacker. Im guessing i cant. You can take it at cnnmoney. Com. Some other news were watching this morning, the pursuit of a longterm truce is under way. Palestinians are meeting with egyptian officers right now in cairo, egypt serving as the gobetween. The two sides have no plans to meet facetoface. The u. S. State Department Also sending a moderator for these talks. Egypt trying to extend the ceasefire until monday. The current one is set to expire friday. More ahead. Someone is leaking sensitive u. S. Secrets. This time its not Edward Snowden. An article on the website intercept sites government documents dated after snowden went into exile in russia. These newer documents detail an explosive growth in databases that track terror suspects. The u. S. Is pursuing the source of that leak. This is another story well follow a little more in depth later on in the show. I want to show you some drama playing out on a nevada highway. The rain, so much of it which well show you, it turned there was a lot of flooding, swept some cars away. As of now i think youll have to take my word for it. Look out get out get out get out get out a group of airmen pulled that women out as another car swept toward her. One of the men who was doing the rescuing had to be rescued himself. The amazing thing here is that no one was hurt. People think i can go through, its not that deep, but the force of that water is nothing to be reckoned with. Its such a shock to see that near las vegas which is known to be dry. I want to show you another incredible video from perth, australia. Nischelle turner will never get on a train after this. A man slipped and fell between the train and the platform. His fellow passengers came to his rescue. They got off the train. Look at this. They pushed on it. They were able to tilt it just enough for him to wiggle free. The identity of the lucky man is still a mystery. The video has gone viral. What a love about this, they push it, a brief moment of celebration, they get on the train and carry on only 15 minutes behind schedule. Amazing. How did a gunman manage to kill a u. S. General inside a Security Military Training Facility . Was this an inside job . We have new details coming up. Also, what really happened to Bowe Bergdahl that day in 2009 when he fell into taliban hands . Today he faces the chief investigator who has a lot of questions for bergdahl. Thank ythank you for defendiyour sacrifice. And thank you for your bravery. Thank you colonel. Thank you daddy. Military families are uniquely thankful for many things, the legacy of usaa Auto Insurance can be one of them. If youre a current or former military member or their family, get an Auto Insurance quote and see why 92 of our members plan to stay for life. We are getting new details on the brazen attack that killed a major general, Harold Greene in afghanistan. He was gunned down yesterday add a military Training Facility. He became the most senior u. S. Officer to be filled since 9 11. Authorities say they think it was an afghan soldier who was the gunman. I want to bring in pentagon correspondent barbara starr. This is the very definition of an insider attack. It really is. By all accounts what they have learned so far is general greene and a number of other u. S. Troops, other military personnel, had gone to the facility. They were standing outside a building when suddenly the gunman opened up from inside another nearby building. So we dont know even at this point if his security personnel, if anybody was even able to return fire. By all accounts, it was a man in an Afghan Military uniform. They believe he had some considerable time of experience with the Afghan Military. He had been through all the security checks, all the vetting and this still happened. I think its really going to the challenge that the u. S. Continues to have even though theyve brought the number of attacks down, really the challenge they have with insider attacks. Especially when you talk about the drawdown of u. S. Troops there. Lets talk about the fact that weve seen that number decline. I think we have some data to support it. Talk about that. Do we know any reason why, if they maybe put new measures in place. You can see right there the numbers have come down. Some of it is they believe because they put some security measures in place. Troops generally now even when theyre inside buildings they will have their weapons with them. Theyll be much more watchful. They have a program called guardian angel, one person assigned to stand back and keep watch over everybody else, these sorts of things. But when you look at it, its still very difficult to determine. I think we also have some data to show about what they think the causes of these insider attacks have been. If you look at some of them, yes, some of them they determined that people are taliban infiltrators, some they just dont know what the motive is. Some is combat stress. About onethird of the time of these cases that they investigate, theyre never able to determine what leads these afghan troops to go ahead and conduct violence against those who are supposed to be their allies. Always were saying, terrible news for all the families involved in yesterdays incident. This has been going on for some time and it really has all the ranks from enlisted out in the field who have fallen to this kind of attack all the way to general greene. Barbara starr, thanks to you for that. So sad for the family and a big blow as the u. S. Tries to change the scope of its involvement in afghanistan. Quarter past the hour. Still ahead, trading weapons for words. Will the talks going on at this hour in cairo keep the curre current ceasefire going and maybe something more permanent . At this hour, crucial meetings under way in cairo as representatives of both sides of this Israeli Palestinian conflict try to find Common Ground and a lasting peace. The current truce holding and set to expire on friday. They would like to extend the ceasefire into the weekend. The u. S. Meanwhile is sending a team to help monitor those talks but only in a supporting role. I want to bring in reza sayah. Good to have you with us. We have been watching the situation as i know you have. Give us an idea of what the status us of these talks right now. They began a short time ago, i understand. Reporter at least a portion of the talks have started, but its been very challenging to figure out how these talks are progressing and taking shape. Remember, this is not your usual sit down facetoface dialogue. These are indirect talks. Theyre complicated. Even though these two sides have agreed to stop fighting, there are growing indications that theyre not on the same page with how they should move forward. So lets explain to you what we know at this hour. According to Egyptian Government officials, both delegations are here, the israelis and the palestinians. A palestinian official telling cnn they are meeting at this hour with egyptian intelligence officials. There are some reports that the israelis are meeting with the egyptians as well, although we havent been able to confirm that yet. Heres where things get a little murky and you start seeing the mistrust thats fueled this conflict. A palestinian official telling cnn that hes not convinced that the israeli delegation in cairo is authorized to talk about the core demands of hamas, in other words, to talk about a permanent truce which is something that hamas wants in these negotiations. And then we have this statement from a senior egyptian official who is telling us these talks are an experimental discussion in order to consolidate the ceasefire. Now, this is a statement that suggests that these two sides, along with egyptians, are still talking about the framework of the current ceasefire and talks of a permanent truce is still a long ways off. So a lot to sort through. Some important hours coming up tonight and tomorrow, and well see where things go. Certainly an indication of the fra jillty and the diplomacy requires and the many steps. It does not happen immediately in one sitdown. Reza, great reporting. Its the first step in what could be a longer process. We have a man who has been in the room for these types of situations. Former u. S. Ambassador to the United Nations among many other jobs, bill richardson. Weve learned that the state department is sending a team to help monitor these talks in a supporting role. I wonder what that means, the u. S. Is supporting these talks right now. In a supporting role, what can they do there on the ground to actually move them forward . Well, i think the u. S. Role here is still essential. Were still brokers in the middle east peace process. Were strong with israel. We have leverage and strength with abass, obviously not with hamas. Were still the leaders of the quartet, britain, france, other mediators. So our presence is important. But the key role is egypt. Egypt has emerged as the brokers trying to bring the two sides together. I imagine at the beginning of the negotiations both sides are putting out their strongest demands, but the fact that the mediation by egypt is taking place, even though theyre not meeting directly, is a good sign. I predict that there will be an extension of the deadline 72 hours. Theyre not going to reach an agreement right away, but at least theres a lessoning of tensions. At least the fighting has stopped temporarily. I think theres a lot of us with caution optimism but somewhat skeptical. Ambassador, im curious, as john was alluding to, you have been in these kind of conversations and in these kinds of negotiations. Im really curious, given the absolute distrust that these parties have for one another, profound, historic, fundamental, what is that conversation even like when you sit in that room . Well, its very heated. Its very tense as i said at the beginning. What the palestinians are going to want obviously is a lasting truce. Theyre going to want the end of the blockade between israel and egypt of the gaza which gives egypt leverage as the negotiator. What israel wants is hamas not to rearm again. Thats not going to happen, to reign in its military wing. Thats probably not going to happen. But what i think egypt will push for is a mediating role by abass, the palestinian moderates. Maybe they will be the ones that can monitor a potential fragile ceasefire and then find a way i think the key may be to fund an internationally funded and maybe thats why the u. S. Is there, a reconstruction effort of the coastal strip of gazas power plants, of their entire infrastructure that literally is collapsed. They have 260,000 refugees. I think israel is going to demand and want i think theyve destroyed most of the tunnels. Theyre going to want no reconstruction of those tunnels. That want those rockets. Theyve destroyed about 3,000. The remaining rockets that hamas launches to stop. Theres a lot of issues that discuss, but i see a ray of hope with abass, the palestinian moderates, the egyptians pushing towards that moderating role, anchor by the United States and the European Union and the u. N. To play a role in the reconstruction of the area. A lot of pressure on the egyptians right now. This will take a deft touch. Thanks for being with us. We talk about the two sides but i also wonder, the other players in this, the other countries in the middle east what they need to come to the table with as well. Theyve been hands off lately a lot of the other countries right now. Egypt has the only skin in the game directly at this point. Were going to turn to another story ahead after this break. Two americans are being treated as we know for ebola in the u. S. Meanwhile, the virus is spreading out of control you could say in west africa. Her son is expected to be able to see her soon. Dr. Kent brantly was the first human ever to receive the experimental serum. While the ebola situation here in the United States seemed to be very much managed, the epidemic overseas in west africa particularly is spiraling out of control. 45 new deaths and more than 100 new cases have been reported since saturday. The World Health Organization reports that 932 people have died since the beginning of the year. The virus has killed people in four west african nations, sierra leone, guinea, liberia. Theres no known cure. It strikes victims so hard, a fever, muscle aches, bleeding, vomiting, organ failure and in 60 of the cases its fatal. Were joined from sierra leone. David, you were just at a facility thats dealing with this outbreak. We want to play you a piece of that tape and talk about it after. In the high risk zone, this woman calls out for help. She has ebola. So does her son. Ebola is so deadly, its killing our citizens. Its killing our country, she says. Her husband and son died of the disease. 70 of confirmed cases here will die, too. To talk to her we must stand a few feet away. The strict protocols protect us. The cruelty is, they isolate her. Still, she believes her 12yearold daughter will make it. Again, were on the phone with David Mckenzie who you saw in that piece. What is it like to be there when you know ebola is around . Why do you have to be so far away from that woman . Reporter you have to be far away because ebola can spread through bodily fluids or if you touch something that a sufferer touches. Its incredibly contagious and especially infectious. Thats why, john, you can stand a few feet away like that and talk to them. Of course, for me ive been in one Ebola Outbreak before this. This one is far worse and unprecedented in scale. It was really touching to finally be able to talk to people any which way we could and try to get a sense of their personal story. We know, david, that nigeria is releasing information that they have seven cases confirmed in their country and have said, look, we dont have control of this. Sierra leone has said theyre going to need international assistance. When youre on the ground, what are the medical professionals saying about how theyre coping with it and if theyre getting this under control . Reporter theyre saying theyre not anywhere close to getting this under control. They do get a sense that theyve fought this for several months and there might have been an opportunity some months ago when it was more confined to deal with it in a certain way. Now its way beyond that point. Theyre saying they do need a lot more assistance, but that assistance is in terms of tracing people who went out into the community and might have contacted people. There are all sorts of complex things you need to do which isnt being done. My sense is that were in a dire situation here. Now that its spread to nigeria and the big african city, thats a very troubling sign. They feel that with the right amount of resources, they might be able to stop this outbreak but the amount of resources that are there now, they will not stop it. In nooit is alarming to say least. David mckenzie, we appreciate you joining us and appreciate the risks youre taking to report on this. Absolutely. An american doctor who worked as a missionary in zie ear some 40 years ago says he believes that he was the First American to survive ebola. Dr. Tom karen says he caught the virus while he was performing an autopsy on a patient who died before he was diagnosed. Apparently he cut himself during the procedure. I knicked my finger with a scalpel. It was two weeks later i came down accusely ill. I lost 20 pounds in the process and finally recovered enough to be able to go back up to the hospital part time and then started getting back into my schedule again. Now he says that he didnt find out that he had ebola until four years later when the virus was discovered in the ebola river. Remember that was first discovered in 1976. He said doctors took his blood and discovered that he had built up ebola antibodies. Ahead for us, the army, the investigators now facetoface with Bowe Bergdahl today. S. Military getting ready to find out how and why Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl ended up in taliban hands for five years. The general leading the investigation will question him about his capture back in 2009. Of course, youve heard over these last few months the critics who suggest that bergdahl deserted his post. Hes now back on regular duty at fort sam houston. New pictures being released. He looks a lot healthier than he did during his days in captivity. I want to bring in a former Army Jag Officer and military defense attorney. Thanks for joining us. Good morning. Were hearing a little bit more from bergdahls attorney talking about this meeting with the general, that its less of an interrogation and more like a conversation and interview. Do you feel thats a Fair Assessment . It is. You dont have a group of agents or what we call c. I. D. Interviewing him. Nevertheless, hes going to be read his rights. Obviously the general is not a trained investigator but obviously others will have spoken to him ahead of time. So in some ways, yes, maybe its a little bit friendlier setting, but the questions will basically decide his fate. So even though a friendlier setting, his attorneys have to be extremely cautious. Im a little surprised by his civilian attorneys comments. Why so . What do you mean . He said words to the effect of any reasonable person wouldnt want to put him back in confinement. Well, this is a serious situation and his military Defense Council is coming in from hawaii. Why its significant is because that military Defense Council is in sergeant bergdahls original jurisdiction. Obviously they have picked a military defense counsel from his previous installation where he could be charged. So to assume that reasonable minds will prevail speaking simply as a defense counsel, i would say is a little concerning. Obviously this is serious. He is in legal jeopardy per se which is not to say that hes being convicted but this counts, this interview, even if its not an interrogation. What needs to be proved . The suggestion here by critics is this was desertion. What needs to be proved for that to be the case . Great question. Its going to hinge on what was his intent that day. Theyll be asking what were his previous weeks like, any statements or emails or anything that he did leading up to. But then it really comes down to, what was he thinking on that specific day. Was he just going for a walk, coming back, did he want to leave with the intent never to return. Thats really what its going to hinge on, and that assumes that he can remember what he was thinking that day. So lets go next steps then. Lets say they do find that he did, in fact, desert. What happens then . Its literally going to be in the hands of the staff judge advocate which is the equivalent of the District Attorney if you think of any county. Im sure there will be input from possibly pentagon officials. It just depends. But its literally going to be in their hands to decide is this something we want to move forward with. Instead of a courtmartial do we want to separate him administrationively. I wonder will they consider that he has spent, some will say, he spent five years in captivity, is that not punishment enough in the hands of the taliban. Of course. How can you absolutely not. We dont even know the details of what happened to him. None of us know if he was tortured or threatened, any of those details. So, yes, absolutely. Its all going to turn on that as well. We would love to have you back with us to talk about other topics as well. Youre an excellent guest with us. Thank you. Talking with us about areas that were not familiar with. I wonder what well find out about this interview and that may be discussed tomorrow. Quarter to the hour right now. Cnn broke the news about a new major leak of u. S. Friskies grillers. The u. S. Government now trying to track down another leaker of national secrets. Now, they say they know its not Edward Snowden because snowden is in exile in russia and has been for a year. This was mr. Snowden at the bolshoi theatre in moscow, the first time hes been seen at a public event since his arrival. The documents that are now being leaked are dated back from august 2013 which is months after snowden left the nsa and left the country. I want to bring in our cnn reporter evan perez who broke this story for us. Great reporting. First of all, walk us through it. What exactly was leaked, how serious is it and how can they really, really be sure that they may not have done this breach from behind russian borders, behind the iron curtain . Well, the documents that were talking about were leaked to the website, the intercept which was started by glen greenwald. Hes been publishing some of the snowden documents as you know. These documents were from the National Counterterrorism center and they describe how much the Obama Administration has increased the number of people that are on watch lists, that are on is up to to try to figure out, to stay a step ahead of the terrorists. So these are very sensitive documents. Theyre very concerned in the government how these got out, so now theyre trying to figure it out. Any clues at all at this point, even what agency the leak might be coming from . We do know, based on the documents, theyre labeled secret as you can see, from the shot we just showed you. So these were stored on a pentagon Computer System called cipra net. That is linked to a lot of departments. It could be the pentagon, the state department, the justice department. Theres a lot of people who have access. Thats really the problem. The government says there are about 3. 2 Million People who have clearance to get access to secret documents, secret information. Thats a lot of people. Theres a lot of potential for problems like this. 3. 2 Million People, youre going to have to work your sources. Youve got some phone calls ahead of you. Look at the timing of all of this, the extra sensitivity the government has, given the extra sensitive documents that were recently leaked. I almost wonder whats worse to them. The fact they were leaked at all. The fact these were leaked and these were clearly documents the government says should not be out is a big problem for them. They obviously dont want to trigger fears that the government is going after journalists who might be getting these leaked documents. Obviously, we all get talked to behind the scenes by officials. They dont want to make it seem like theyre going after the journalistings. They do want to figure out where these leaks are coming from. Theyre fearful that the snowden incident has encouraged other leakerings. Evan perez, thanks so much. Were going to take a short break. This is obviously going to take a hit on the old stock market, i can imagine there. Time warner stock dropped between 10 and 12 as soon as this came out. You can see, it was doing well all year. There was this big uptick. As soon as murdochs interest in time warner was leaked. The reason why murdoch has withdrawn his offer is because his stock, foxs stock, did basically the opposite. Dropped right around the time his interest was leaked. Ill put his statement up on the screen. He says thats one of the big reasons why hes backing down now. He says at the end of the statement there it made the transition unattractive to fox shareholders. Thats one of the reasons why hes backing away. He has to Pay Attention to what his shareholders want. Is this like a bad high school breakup where its not really over . Is it overother now . What about time warner . People have learned over the years not to underestimate rue put murdoch. He famously overpaid for the wall street journal about seven years ago. But his newspaper, the wall street journal, said last night there is no, quote, second target or plan b for murdoch in this particular case. That said, is time warner still in play . A lot of people much smarter than i think it is. Its a very valuable asset. Not just because of the three of us. Filled with a lot of valuable assets. But because its got hbo. Its got warner bros. Its got turner which includes cnn. Its a pure play content company. It might be even more valuable a year or two down the line. What would time warner would want is what any company would want. Not just one bidder like murdoch but multiple bidders. Even in the changing landscape of media and the new players on this scene it is because actually time warner earnings beat wall street estimates. One of the striking things to me was hbo. Hbo subscription rates were up. People were having to be paying more. But theyre willing to. Hbo is making money from some new Services Like amazon. These Big Media Companies are in a pretty safe position. And sports, you know, and time Warner Turner has sports and these live disney came out, espn is owned by disney, and those earnings were strong as well. Sports are by definition live broadcasts, hard to tivo, hard to dvr. People want them. People may not like their cable company. But they like the service. They like the programming. They may hate paying so much for it, but people continue to be willing to pay for television. I knew you were the guy to talk about it. Thank you for joining us. Just one of the many valuable assets of the time warner company. That is all for us at this hour. Im john berman. Are you sure . I am absolutely sure. Legal view with Ashleigh Banfield starts right now. If youve got mail, odds are youve been hacked. In what may be the biggest cyberattack in the history of the world. More than 1 billion, thats billion, with a b, folks, Internet User names and passwards stolen from almost a half million websites. So who did this . More importantly, what can you do about it . Also this hour, ambushed in afghanistan. By a supposed ally. A twostar u. S. General on a mission to train soldiers in afghanistan, instead become, the
