The president is wading back into the politics of ferguson after taking a long Holiday Weekend break. He will be meeting with members of his cabinet at around noon in just about an hour from now. And hes going to be talking about not only this issue of this lack of trust in minority communities in Police Departments but he also wants to get an update of a review he ordered of pentagon excess military equipment being sent to Law Enforcement agencies around the country. Theres been a lot of talks, as you know, guys, about this issue of whether Police Departments are overmilitarized so the president will get an update. Later on this afternoon hell meet with young civil rights leaders and following that there will be a much larger meeting in the Eisenhower Executive Office building, that thes the large Federal Building where the president , Vice President , Law Enforcement groups, church leaders, faith leaders and also civil Rights Groups will be meeting. All sort of coming together to get this National Dialogue going. But john and michaela, the one question we have not answered yet is whether or not the president is going to be going to ferguson. Thats one thing that the white house has not really answered the question on. But we should point out that the attorney general, eric holder, hell be in atlanta later today. Hell be doing a tour of various cities around the country to also get that dialogue going with civil rights leaders and faith leaders around the country. Jim, again, the big question as you say is will the president go and if so when. I suppose another question is, is today just about talk or can we expect any kind of action . You know, i dont think were at the action phase yet. I think we here in the talking phase for sure, john. No question about it, this is a country that probably needs to start a conversation on this issue. Its a question that has lingered for some time during this presidency and president obama has struggled with this issue from time to time. Youve heard africanamerican leaders, civil rights leaders, really go after this president and say he hasnt done enough. And so this is really a first step for the president to get that conversation going. But no question about it, i think the symbolic gesture of the president going to ferguson, missouri, would do a huge amount of good, i think, in the Civil Rights Community in terms of shoring up his support in that community. Theyre still thrilled that president obama is in the oval office. But you are starting to hear members of that Community Question whether or not this president has done enough and i think that conversation gets going today. And i think having Police Groups in the Eisenhower Executive Office building with the president and the Vice President sitting down with civil rights leaders, i think getting that conversation started is also very valuable even though there might not be any big executive orders coming out of this meeting. Do you think thats being viewed as a symbolic gesture or do you think it is a step that will be seen as a i dont know, inching towards some healing in that community . Well, this is a situation where i dont think many people here in the ferguson area, whether you support Darren Wilson or you didnt, could ever have envisioned a situation where Darren Wilson would be patrolling these streets. Many people you speak with here in ferguson say it was a necessary step, something that had to happen to get things moving along. Ed, i know a lot of people are talking about what happened on a football field nearby when the st. Louis ram, five of them before the game started, they put their hands up as they ran on the field and that gesture so many people identify with the protests in ferguson, the hands up, dont shoot gesture. How was that received in ferguson . There are a lot of people who thought it was perfectly appropriate or appreciated the gesture. This controversy is also interesting that it happens on a day when you have so mem m people talking about people bridging gaps. The mayor of ferguson is talking about bridging gaps between the Police Department and the africanamerican then you have this controversy where the st. Louis Police Officers association criticizing in very Strong Language what these Football Players did on the field yesterday afternoon. So you know here you have on one side people talking about bringing people together to have these conversations and then you have these diametrically opposed situations that unfolded yesterday here so its kind of a case in point of how both of these sides need to come together. We actually just gotten a interesting response here. The nfl, the league, is responding to the st. Louis Police Officers association statement. This is how the league responded. I think its worth bringing up. It says we respect and understand the concerns of all individuals whove express vieweds on this tragic situation. When our sports departments pressed them on disciplining them they went on to say we have nothing further to add. No discipline. Military members in the homeland this morning sunday night by dhs and the fbi and it basically says that isis members overseas are looking for homegrown violent extremists living in the u. S. This is all based on recent online chatter on social media, on these extremist forums and this bulletin also suggests that members of the military be cautious with what they post online, review their online social Media Presence for any information that might attract the information of violent extremists. And this bulletin follows the recent attack in canada. And also intelligence sources i a efbeen speaking with have expressed this growing concern that isis could inspire recent individuals in the west to carry out small scale attacks against all kinds of individuals, not just military members, but also Law Enforcement, even members of the media. But theres something that happens after the punch and theres its mostly seen from outside and janay, you are unconscious. Youre out cold on the floor and instead of being so freaked out that he kneels down and takes your daughters head in his arm and strokes her face and her hair and says im sorry, he stands there for a long time. What did you think when you saw that part of the tape . I was very upset by that part. And i told him so. I basically told him that i didnt care who was out there at the elevator, you should have never left her there like that. I did tell him that after i saw it, why did you just leave me there like that. Did you see that part . From the outside . Why didnt you comfort me . He said he was terrified . So interesting to hear her speak on her own terms, not with a Baltimore Ravens backdrop there. And with her mother by her side, too, interesting perspective. Lets talk about this. Theres still love in that relationship. And to expect her to suddenly once that punch happened there was still a marriage. It didnt end with that punch part of this is this is natural. Victims love their abusive partner no matter what happens. I think this is part two for her. Will theres an amount of ember raszment attached to this because of the judgment and victim blaming weve heard. So i think her wanting to support her husband is at the same time supporting what she believes is the love she has for her husband. Brian, youve seen so much ugline ugliness, i think, in probably all your work with domestic abuse. Is have you seen any stories work out well . Is there a story bookending for ray and janay rice . I believe there are endings that there is change, otherwise i wouldnt be doing this work. I think we hear from people who come back and say i was able to get the change. I can remember talking to a young man who contacted me who was in the military who said i dont like that way im behaving with my partner, i want to change. He want the steps laid out of how he could change. I know people want to change and i believe people can change. But, again, just like abuse is a choice, change is a choice. And rachel, obviously now that hes been reinstated by the nfl, what does the future hold for ray rice . Weve talked about the fact there are teams expressing interest. How does he move forward . Does hi move forward . Teams have expressed interest. That means theyve made a phone call. Thats a far leap from resigning him. A couple of the teams who have expressed interest have made it known throughout nfl circles were not going to sign him, we just made the phone call. So it will be interesting to see if a team takes a chance on him this season. Its late in the season. He didnt have a very productive season just in football terms. Theres a lot of controversy associated with him so thats a big question mark. I would think it would be more likely we would see him back on a Team Next Season and america is a country of second chances. There are not a lot of people who think that you have if you have done something and paid a price you deserve to never work again in your entire life. I think there will be some Public Acceptance but there will be protests. Lets talk about Roger Goodell. Youve had tough questions for him yourself. Whats going on in the rice household is almost a separate issue between what went on and what is going on in the nfl. This has to be a slap in the face to Roger Goodell to have ray rice reinstated. An arbitrator is saying you got it wrong. And the way she said youve got it wrong. In her decision she specifically said that Roger Goodell was arbitrary. We dont like arbitrary justice. Second of all, she made the point of saying she disagreed with what Roger Goodell said in the aftermath of the elevator tape being shown. I want to remind everybody what happened. He suspended ray rice for only two games. Then the tmz tape comes out, everybody goes crazy over it as they should have after seeing that and said wait a minute, if you knew this, why didnt you suspend him for more . And he came out and in an effort apparently to save face and said no, no, no, ray rice misled me about what happened in that elevator. He didnt tell me the truth. So he basically tried to pin his initial twogame suspension being light on ray rice. And say no, no, no. We didnt have the information. The arbitrator came out last weekend and said yeah, you did. It is my finding he told you the truth. So thats one more strike against Roger Goodell. But i want to say very strongly, the nfl owners are not going to use this to fire him. This is going to be maybe a hit on his credibility in the public sphere but hell keep his job and march forward. Rachel nichols, thank you so much for that. The team reported him missing last week when he didnt show up for practice. Joining us now to talk about this story, our medical analyst dr. Seema yasmin. Its a pleasure to have you here. Im curious what you can tell us about what the science is pointing to in terms of concussions. Weve been talking about it a fair amount, it seems when it comes to football in the last few years. Is the research pointing to over time repeated concussions could lead to someone, i dont know, feeling suicidal thoughts . Absolutely, michaela, it is. In fact, theres a brain bank in massachusetts that looks at the brains of people whove played football and whove then passed away. Theyve looked at 128 brains of people who played either professional football, semiprofessional football or college or High School Football and found upwards of 80 of them had some kind of chronic brain injury and even the nfl recently in Court Documents has said they expect about a third of their retired players to suffer some kind of brain injury and consequences like dementia or alzheimers disease. But isnt that the key there is that those are generally retired players. This is a young man, he was only 22 playing college football. The thing is, though, with concussion, youre getting this traumatic brain injury, the brain is literally shaking inside of the skull and the symptom can initially be quite subtle, they can be things like headache, patients sometimes say they feel like theyre stuck in a fog, they cant concentrate, they cant remember, but parents will say to them well, their personalities have changed since theyve had a few concussions, especially when its been repetitive. We know in this instance this guy was a wrestler as well and playing different kinds of Contact Sports and having repeat concussion cans increase the chance of things like depression as well. I want to talk a little bit more about the warning signs here because its not just retired Football Players. People talk about concussions in High School Sports for boys and girls. Its affecting so many people in so many sports. What do you look for if youre a parent. This kid, this poor kid, he obviously had an idea that concussions were somehow causing him depression if nothing else and maybe being suicidal. But short of that what are some of the signs . The concern is, john, you dont need loss of consciousness in order to have a concussion so folks might be watching a game and think, well, that person fell over, they knocked their head but they got back up again, they didnt pass out. They could still have had a concussion. The symptoms and the signs can be really subtle. As i mentioned, a headache, just some changes in mood, but really be careful about those, look out for those, seek medical treatment and make sure that you give yourself the time to recover and heal. We know that once somebodys had a concussion, the ten days after that are absolutely crucial. In those ten days, there are much increased chance of having a second concussion. So its important they see a doctor and sit out a few games if thats necessary. Thats why there are these enforced protocols now in college and pro sports, if you have a concussion you have the come off the field and sit. And they have these things in place. Id like to talk to them. Were glad to sit down and talk to these players and find out what their real intentions were and were glad to talk to the league but ill tell you, not only are st. Louis Police Officers mad but friends in Law Enforcement from across the country were calling me last night that were offended. Whats your reaction, rachel . What do we know about mr. Ruhr da . Its interesting. Its not surprising to me that he spearheaded the Police Association criticizing this gesture asking for an apology. He has a track record here. He is somebody who is a former Police Officer himself, he was fired from the police force for filing a false report against a suspect and then subsequently firing a false filing a false report against his own police commissioner. He is now in the local state legislature and recently this year sponsored a billing a a gaiting that Police Officers who shoot people on the job, their names should not be released to the public. So it does not surprise me that somebody who has these views has a problem with Football Players who are acting in solidarity with protesters who, honestly, arent just protesting the grand jury decision, theyre protesting these protests around the world and the country have been part of a larger discussion about Police Involvement in minority communities and this is someone who has a track record basically on the other side of that issue. So it doesnt surprise me hes the one leading the charge against the rams players. There is a discussion not just in football but all sports leagues right now. We heard from ben watson, the tight end who wrote a very thoughtful introspective piece about what this means from him. Are you hearing from other athletes discussing this . We saw tweet that first day. Of course. Its a huge topic of conversation not only with nfl locker rooms, nba locker rooms, we heard lebron james comment on this saying he think about his son. These are young black men. And how people may see them if they dont know theyre lebron james kids. Its important for athletes to talk about this no matter what they think on either side of an issue. Sports is where we come together in this country. We are an increasingly fractured society. We dont have National Discussions in a lot of places. Were all split on politics, were split on which Television Shows we watch but we come together to watch football. Thats where the ratings are the highest and if football is where we have to have this conversation, thats where we should have it. It will be really interesting to see where this goes now, rachel. I want to underline that. I want to bring in Brian Stelter host of cnns reliable sources. People like to say theres an unspoken rule that you dont criticize the children of politicians. Its not unspoken. We say it all the time on both sides of the aisle here. Kids are off limits in politics. Thats almost always the case here. Because they didnt choose to run for office. Their parents did. Sasha and malia didnt choose to live in the white house. Im sure theres some days they wish they didnt. Maybe turkey pardoning day was among them. I dont know how any of us would have reacted to being there with our parents. We were joking about the fact that it looked like they were having a good time. That is a far cry from what this Communications Director posted on her facebook page. Absolutely. And michaela, the fact that this person, her job is to do pr, to speak to the public and the suppress underlined how awkward this was. One of the things that we have all everybody has sort of come out and said this is unacceptable what she said, has the gop responded, though . There has been some response and i was interested in what sean spicer, the head of the rnc, the Republican National committees pr operation said yesterday. He rebuked what Elizabeth Lauten said and he also said this, and we can put it up on the screen. While the comments were inappropriate and sensitive, the mainstream medias coverage of this story is is awe palling. In over 20 years of politics, i have never seen one of the countless inappropriate comments by democrats covered to a fraction by this. Sean and i have debated about this whether republicans who say foolish things get more attention than democrats. So its our fault . I think in this case this was about a slow news cycle. There was a void of stuff to talk about over the weekend, it got a lot of attention on line on twitter and facebook and spread to the mainstream news media. That has a lot to do with it. I think theres something to be said for the fact that this was a relatively obscure woman. This wasnt John Boehners chief of staff or something. Thats the thing here. Without getting into political relativism over who can say what and gets criticized for saying what, its not like john boehner was saying this, its the Communications Director for a congressman most people, many people outside of tennessee havent heard of. I mispronounced his name the first time i said it. The facebook postshe put up on thanksgiving was barely noticed until an africanamerican web site the root noticed it and went viral. It doesnt make it okay. It doesnt explain away the comments. But theres context and then theres context. The fact is, were talking about this in a time where there is an active effort to counter Cyber Bullying and thats essentially what this comes down to. These are two teenaged girls, this is a woman, i dont know how old she is but shes a grownup who takes to facebook, which is generally a medium of the younger generation, and is setting quite a terrible example by essentially just being mean. Right. And then she saider in n her apology after many hours of prayer she concluded it was wrong and she took it back and apologized. How was that received . I dont want to be disrespectful about her religious believes but im not sure there were hours of prayer knows know it was wrong. Your gut should tell you. And to me its striking taking away sasha and malia, its striking how natural it is on the right to criticize the parents, to criticize the obamas the way she did. To go after them so naturally as if it just flows off the fingers. It shows how polarized we are in this last two years of the obama administration. She essentially said they dont respect the office. And from there, it is pretty easy to go that one step further and talk about the daughters in a way that was very inappropriate. Well now this Communications Director who never probably had an impact nationally before has resigned. I will predict shell get work somewhere else in the coming years. The president of the university of virginia, Theresa Sullivan, was scheduled to speak at the National Press club in washington, but that speech canceled. Announced on the press clubs web site. The universitys official explanation is that president Theresa Sullivan is cancelling her appearance at the National Press conference to stay on campus and communicate, essentially, with the stakeholders most affected by the controversy. The spokesman at the school put out a statement, here it is, saying during this extraordinary time president sullivans energies are best focused on the campus grounds where she can speak directly to and hear directly from the university community, participate in the healing process and work to find answers to the many questions that deserve attention. Also its clear the university is still working in crisis mode at this point. They have both a Public Relations problem as well as potential legal concerns. Neither of those necessarily would be served by an appearance at the press club right now. Anything she might say publicly could just fire up another news cycle and a rehashing of the stories from last week, not to mention more public pronouncements, no matter what she says while she has multiple investigations going on could turn out to be seen as counterproductive legally, john and michaela.
