Londons gatwick airport. That flight, a very large plane, a 747, 400 jumbo, has landed safely. Earlier a spokesman said it had problems with the landing gear. I think you can see that picture right there of that landing gear not fully deployed. Yes, absolutely. That landing gear there not fully deployed. The plane did have time to return safely to london. The plane now on the ground and, of course you can see it right there. The airline says the priority is the safety of the passengers. Glad to see the plane on the ground. A relief there but not so much in Southeast Asia where we turn now. The Aerial Search for miss inging airasia flight 8501 has been called off. 162 people were on board that flight. It vanished from radar after taking off from the indonesian city of surabaya en route to singapore. The pilot requested a higher altitude due to weather. That request was denied because there was already a plane at that higher altitude. Communication with the jetliner was lost shortly thereafter. This morning indonesian Officials Say their early conjecture is that the plane is at the bottom of the java sea. Those are their words. Really though at this point no concrete evidence pointing in any one direction or another. We have a reporter at the surabaya airport where the flight originated. David, give us a sense of the latest. Hey, john and michaela. As you mentioned, search efforts suspended for the night, at least terms of the Aerial Search. Whats critical to note is the next few hours of the search as it becomes daylight and we head into tuesday, the second full day of searching will be critical. The indonesian Vice President was here a short time ago, a few hours ago, spoke to my colleague andrew stevens, said this is still a searchandrescue mission, emphasis on the rescue. But were about 40 hours from the time the plane took off on monday morning, vanished about an hour into its flight and no trace of wreckage, no trace of the plane. We talk a lot about an investigation, what happened what went wrong. At this point we dont know where the aircraft is. We talked to officials like that ceo tony hearn december and he says i want to speculate, we need to find the aircraft and hope for survivors. I know youve had a chance to talk to some of the families that are there awaiting any word of their loved one. When they still hear hear that this is still being tipified as a search and rescue operation, does it make the wait even more agonizing for them . Michaela i thinking aize inning is a good word to describe what weve seen here today. Surabaya International Airport here just next to the terminal behind she the Crisis Center for airasia. This is where family members have come and gotten briefings, weve seen tears, hugs. The general sentiment from various family members weve had a chance to speak to briefly is that there is hope that their loved ones have survived but the hope is fleeting. I have to tell you one thing that touched me they have the passenger manifest all 155 passengers on board posted outside this building and you look down the list its holiday time here you see two, three, four five even six members of the same family, same last name on that board. So if they do find wreckage and the aircraft was lost some families are going to be facing some very difficult days ahead. Of course hope persevering and the search picking up just a few hours from now. John and michaela. How devastating to know whole families could be on that plane. Well we know the u. S. Navy says it is ready to assist in the search for flight 8501. So far it has not been asked to help. One of the staging areas for Search Operations is on Indonesias Belitung island. Our Paula Hancocks is there with the latest on whats happening. The searchandrescue operation for the missing airasia plane has grown incise this monday. Were at the airport on the island of belitung and you can see the military helicopters have been coming in all day, also some searchandrescue helicopters. What theyre basically doing is going out on sorties, coming back here to refuel have a briefing to find out where they should be going next and heading off. This is becoming one of the staging areas for this searchandrescue operation. This island is one of the closest areas to that last point of contact the plane had. This is the area that much of the searchandrescue operation is focusing on. According to one official we just spoke to the search area now is 240 by 240 nautical miles so a very large area. Theyre cordoning it off, sectioning it off to make sure theres no overlap, to make sure they dont miss any areas. Theyre doing this very systematically. Now i did speak to first Marshal Supriyadi and he says that at this point they havent managed to narrow this search down. Were still searching all areas. Later if we get new data that leads too a specific location we can narrow it down. I asked the first marshal if he believe there iss the possibility of any survivors still. He said if the plane crashed in water it is unlikely but if it managed to crash on land maybe in the jungles to the east of here then survivors are possible. Paula hancocks cnn Belitung Island indonesia. Our thanks to paula for that. Such a big search area paula was talking about and we know the weather has been rough. Very rough there in recent days. So whats the situation now and how will it affect the search efforts. . Lets bring in chad myers at the cnn weathercenter. Chad, what do things look like right now and tomorrow at first light . What will they see then . I was very encouraged by the pictures that we just saw from paula how things have really calmed down. The winds have calmed down they have been rough, the seas have been rough, this is a shallow part. In youve ever thought about lake erie where lake miami is deep and theres rollers, lake erie all those waves are very sharp because the waves bounce off the bottom and you get a sharper steeper wave action tomorrow will be a much better day for ships. Remember, theres still those pingers throughout theyll be looking for as well. We learned about those on mh370. This plane had a very rough trip. Im sure the pilot just said keep your seat belts on the entire time. Flying through significant thunderstorms 50,000 feet tall at times, trying to fly around them. Theres a radar on the plane. The pilots can see where the turbulence would be, where the thunderstorm shafts would be trying to get around those or between those. But this was a very wide area of turbulence 50 to 75 miles either side of this airplane and it was a very rough ride and then eventually something went very wrong as that plane did lose contact. It was i would say the upanddown winds of what we call the itcz, the intertropical convergence zone. Its the the same place, different part of the world but the same area of weather air france went down five years ago in the itcz where air comes together from two different directions. Cant go down because the earth is there. That rise in motion creates turbulence big thunderstorms and created that weather that created something very wrong up there in the sky. Guys . As we know and weve heard our aviation experts say, its not just one thing that brings down an airliner. I want to give you a look at other stories were following at this hour. Hundreds of passengers have been rescued from a burning ferry in the adrast seven people are dead. One passenger said it was like being aboard t tiehe titanic. Many people had to wait for 35 hours for rescuers to reach them. Reportedly they could feel the fire below their feet. With well have more on this ahead. An intense manhunt is under way in los angeles. Someone fired shots at two lapd officers last night as they drove their patrol car. Both officers doing okay right now. One suspect has been arrested but teams of officers now on the hunt for a second suspect believed to be armed and dangerous. In fact the department is telling people in parts of l. A. To stay inside until they find this suspect. Were targeted. It these are live pictures from the graduation ceremony. This comes amid heightened tensions between mayor and the nypd. Two days ago you may recall hundreds of officers turned their backs to a video monitor as the mayor jeweleulogized Slain Police Officer officers wenjian liu and officer ramos. Many feel the mayor has sided with protesters over the police. We where l bring you any major developments. We are following the search for airasia flight 8501, a leaked image is raising questions about the final moments before this flight lost contact. Why this why a picture that of radar imaging could show that the jet was at risk of stalling midflight. You likely have question about airasia, you can tweet them to us use the hashtag 8501qs or post them on our facebook page. Well try to get you answers ahead at this hour. As serge crews in the java sea rest and prepare to look for the missing airasia jet, another search continues for reason why they lost contact with air Traffic Control and disappeared from radar. Look at this picture here. There are people who do believe it might provide some clues as to what went wrong. What weve also been able to obtain from some pilots is a radar printout of the aircraft and what it shows is this particular flight at an altitude of 36,000 feet and climbing. But traveling at approximately 105 miles per hour, too slow to sustain flight. So it looks like on this radar evidence that we have that he was involved in some upset, High Altitude aerodynamic upset. Lets talk about this. I want to bring in our safe di analyst david soucie and also mary schiavo. David, i cant read air Traffic Control radar but what that shows is that as that plane was ascending to 36,000 feet it was probably flying about 100 miles an hour too slowly to be at that altitude. What problems could that create if thats in fact what happened . Well its a Pretty Simple problem because what happens is the air over the top of the wing is what creates the lift. The speed of the air over the top of the wing. If the air is not going well over the top of the wing not going at a high enough speed theres similarly not enough lift to lift the aircraft up and thats what happens in a stall is the air is either disrupted the word you used was stall. So it could cause the plane to stall if its fly too slowly at that altitude . A stall in this situation is much worse. In n a stall situation if your power is not on, if you pulled power back and the aircraft is angling up and it stalls thats a recoverable stall. In this situation the power was evidently on full power trying to climb and it had climbed too rapidly and thats when it stalled. If it stalls with power on its a much more dangerous situation to be in. Lets run with this supposition for a second mary. Arent pilots trained to deal with stalls . Gould through those scenarios in training would you not . Well they are trained to deal with it. Its some of the most basic training you get in the first days of flight school. However, these pilots were in a tough situation. They were climbing through horrific thunderstorms, their engines, turbines would be ingesting lots of rain they would have wind shifting dramatically i think some of the weather charts saw one minute it was a 40 miles an hour head wind then a 20 miles an hour tail wind and theres all sorts of winds going on. That contributes to the lack of performance on the engines. So as they try to recover, one of the things they have to do is, of course get the nose down let the air speed increase. But at some point if you put too much pressure on those engines and the plane in climb if youre climbing too fast for example, you can make it so you cant recover and cant get the engines to recover from the stall and you cant get the air flow enough back over the wing. So just dependsen what they were doing in the cockpit while they were trying to deal with this . It sounds like what mary is laying south the combination of factors we always talk about. Its never one thing but a combination of factors. So enough weather problem, we know there was a weather concern, at least, the pilots asked to fly above it or at least around it. Now we have that radar image that shows that perhaps it was flying too slowly. So again you put all of this together, you start to perhaps paint a picture of what went wrong. Right. Theres a couple of ways thats rivered to. One of them is a swiss cheese model. What that is that if you picture a piece of swiss cheese and in that swiss cheese it has holes and those are holes in the safety systems. Theres layers of swiss cheese to prevent any particular thing from going through all of that and causing the end, which is the accident. Occasionally when the holes all line up thats when you have an accident when theres holes in each of those safety levels the last being the pilots ability to recover. Mary, thats why a lot of people at home would be wondering, look we understand there was a lot of air traffic through there, other planes were able to get through this horrific weather, these terrible thunderstorms just fine but because maybe of this swiss cheese idea all of those factors didnt likene up for those other planes . Thats exactly right. In every air crash ive worked on its always been a combination of factors. Its almost never just one thing and when it is weather often what you have is something with the plane, some kind of a quirk. For example, this plane has a warning on the attitude indicators in other words the tubes on the side of the plane that take in air and let the pilot know whether she or he is nose up or nose down. For example, if those had a problem at the same time the pilot was trying to recover it would be very difficult, if not impossible to recover. Mary david, well ask you to stay with us. Well put some viewer questions to you a little later at this hour. And if you have questions out there about this search for the missing airasia flight, put them on twitter, the hashtag is 8501qs. Another story were following, Los Angeles Police are on high alert after two officers were shot at. A search is on for a man considered armed and dangerous. Many are wondering if Law Enforcement is being targeted after the deaths of eric garner and michael brown. Well explore that ahead. Happening now in los angeles, scores of police engaged in an intense manhunt for a suspect who might have shot at officers overnight. This happened as the officers were in their patrol car, neither was hurt luckily. One suspect is in custody. Police are telling folks in south l. A. To stay inside as they hunt for a second suspect. All of this comes barely a week after two new York City Police officers were shot and killed as they sat in their police cruiser. Obviously theres an added sense of tension and urgency in the search ongoing in los angeles. Our sara sidner is in l. A. And she joins us now. Sara lets talk about this. Whats the latest in terms of the effort to find a second suspect . Do Police Believe the suspect is still armed . The police are still looking for the second suspect. They have one suspect in custody and they have found a weapon as well. Were not sure exactly what that weapon is but they have found a firearm as well. And i will let you know that they expect to take some of this police tape down the next ten minutes or so so theyre wrapping some things up and interviewing the officers who were involved in the shooting. Both of them were driving along, they were in their black and white patrol car going to another call. They said these two people they were looking for had nothing to do with the call that they were going on. They then said that they saw the flash from a muzzle of a gun and then they were fired upon. And they said it was completely unprovoked that they were not involved with these two suspects in any way, shape, or form. They werent on a call that involved them so it was a surprise to these officers they were not hurt and they did manage to fire a gun at the suspects as well and did manage to get one of the suspects in custody. We also talked to a detective a little bit about exactly what theyre feeling now, the police in particular when it comes to the level of danger that they face considering what happened in new york and here is what she had to say. I dont know that they necessarily feel that theyre becoming targets because of whats going on around the nation although you know last week we had two new york Police Officers that were killed so its undeniable that were aware that there are a very small, small, small percentage of people out there that are so angry at the police that theyre willing to hurt them. And we did talk to someone in the neighborhood who talked about that and said that there are a few people here who do mean to do harm to Police Officers. Michaela . Sara, you say that these suspects were not involved in any way with what the police were doing at the time. We just heard from that spokesperson saying police in general dont necessarily feel like they are being targeted. Never else in it begs the question, you know what happened . Do they have any evidence that points to any intentionality in targeting Police Last Night or any planning . Well we asked them about whether or not this had anything potentially to do with the protests. There were protests antipolice brutality protests on saturday here and there have been sporadic protests just as there have been across the nation and the detectives said no they dont think theres any link there. They dont know why these two suspects started firing on the officers but certainly they said the officers were not, for example, going to a call involving them. They were not involved with these two suspects in any way, they were not trying to arrest these two suspects for any reason. And so thats something theyre going to be asking the one suspect that they have in custody and certainly still looking for that second suspect, john. Sara, quickly, im curious what you heard from the spokesperson about what theyre telling their officers in terms of just sort of keeping their heads up for that very very small minor tichlt also what theyre doing to sort of keep things cool and good within the community. Community. The lapd according to the detective already does a lot of measures to keep the officers safe. For example, they dont have a one officer team its always two officers who go out on calls. And so that for a long time theyve had it that way. And as far as Community Policing, thats something the lapd is already working on as well. That doesnt mean there arent problems, that doesnt mean people dont feel a certain way in some communities towards the Los Angeles Police department. But they arent doing anything particularly different now considering the protests across the country and considering what happened in new york but they said they are always always vigilant. Theyve done a lot in the years that i was in l. A. In terms of Community Policing to be sure. Sara sidner we thank you for that. Hundred passengers are safe right now after a dramatic rescue from a ferry that caught fire off n the adriatic sea. Imagine this. The heat according to one passenger caused the rubber on peoples shoes to melt. On the upper decks, passengers apparently waited in rain and hail and Gale Force Winds to be rescued. One passenger says it was like they were on the titanic. One of our reporters is joining us now from italy. We understand that adding insult to injury that some of the passengers brought on to rescue boats, that the rescue boats were having troubles getting to port. Tell us whats happening there. Well it is just the weather. It is absolutely extraordinarily difficult. The san gorgio which is the rescue boat has emptied the passengers. Its having trouble making its try port. Theyre trying to figure out which port it can dock in at. Just to give you a little description, just in the one day weve been here weve seen hail Gale Force Winds, its been cold sunny, rainy. And to try and maneuver through all of that has been really really difficult. We are now at a hotel where some of the evacuated passengers have been brought and weve seen some of the female passengers because they were airlifted out ahead of many of the male passengers and that seems to have added to the tension and the fear and panic on board. One woman said that she feels she owes her life to a female crew member. She told me i only wish i knew her name. Because when the men began to panic they would be left behind she said this woman waded in and said this is how its going to be. Women with children first, then the remaining women then the men are leave last and the crew will be here even if it mean wes go down with the ship. So amongst these tales of panic and sheer hell some extraordinary stories were hearing. One of the things were hearing about is at first 150 people were able to get off in lifeboat bus then apparently the boat lost power and more lifeboats wouldnt deploy . How can that happen . Well it sounds like even the larger vessels, the merchant ships that were coming in they were having difficulty maintaining their mooring close to the shoop. So a lot of it was about the conditions at sea themselves. To be able to maintain that kind of a distance from a ship while being tossed on these huge waves. At the same time you can imagine youre a helicopter pilot, part of the Italian Naval marines trying to maintain position and sometimes they were able to stay there for long enough to pick up two or three, maximum four people. Sometimes theyd have to go away empty handed. Sometimes they would leave with one and you are down there on the ship with nowhere to go because you cant jump into these frigid waters. Youre being tossed afternoon. Below deck the descriptions were hearing it sounds like an inferno. Italian authorities are trying to unpick these conflicting threads, what could have happened differently why did the fire start in the first place. That investigation has already started. Giving the number of different nationalities involved in this you can appreciate the pressure the Italian Government are under, john. Such a different outcome from other ferry disasters weve seen. Seven dead but the rest of the passengers made it off that ferry burning on the adriatic sea. Thank you for the latest update. We appreciate it. Happening right now, the Aerial Search for missing airasia flight 8501 has been called off for the night. Tomorrow we are told that authorities will expand the search zone, that will happen at first light tomorrow. 162 people aboard that flight have vanished from radar. About 40 minutes after takeoff from the indonesian city of surabaya en route to singapore. The pilot had requested a higher altitude due to weather. That request was denied apparently because there was other aircraft in the area. Communication with that jetliner was lost shortly thereafter. I want to turn to our aviation correspondent Richard Quest to who joins us right now. You have been very busy watching this and were so grateful to you for joining us. Whats the one thing in this mystery disappearance of this airliner that stands out to you the most richard . Until we know more details about why the plane fell off the radar, what has happened to the plane, until we know the details of what was taking place in the cockpit in that climb that may or may not have happened, the one thing i want to know at the moment is just how Much Technology there was involved to track this plane in realtime. Yes the java sea is large but we should have a good and better indication of where that plane is so that the boats and the aircraft can find wreckage and, police god, survivors if such there be as fast as possible. Thats the issue at this hour. So many things for investigators to consider richard. Well ask you to stay with us. I want to talk about Overall Airline safety. It seems as though this was a terribly tragic year for aviation. Well look at it in terms of how it does compare to past years, that will happen ahead at this hour. No hidden fees from the bank where no branches equals great rates. My fiance hes family was on that plane. Were devastated by whats happened. The grief beginning to set in for the families of the 162 people on board missing airasia flight 8501. The airbus disappeared off radar sunday morning as it flew from indonesia over the java sea to singapore. We want to bring back aviation correspondent Richard Quest who is with us once again. We understand richard, that the authorities are going to expand the search area some 11 search zones will be incorporated wednesday once daylight comes. How much more likely does it feel to you that theyre going to find any evidence debris an oil slick, any evidence of this plane . Theyll find evidence of it. I can hear the doubters saying well, you said that about mh370. But bearing in mind ive covered an enormous number of crashes in my time and they always find something. Now 370 is the exception. If this were let me put it right on the table. If there were to be another 370 and there was nothing found and there was no trace, it would be extraordinary. It would be absolutely unthinkable. So will they will it take a day or two . Will it take a week or two . Im not surprised that they havent found anything yet. It does taken a element of time to get people there even though you know the coordinates, even though you know roughly where the plane may have come down. Now, thats still dozens of square miles that has to be carefully mowed, if you like, up and down in grid format. Richard, i know you and our producers want to talk about the advances in air safety but one area where there has been no advance is in this realtime satellite tracking, in this flow of information back and forth between the ground and aircrafts, nine months ten months after flight 370. Were in the same situation again. Yes, youre always right, richard, so i know there will be some sign of this plane very soon but the fact that were two days in and theres nothing after what happened in 370, it doesnt have to be like this does it . Not necessarily. Even if theyd nobody where the plane is its not like looking in a Swimming Pool but to the fundamental point you make i was looking at the tracking task force thats been set up. This task force has reported its gone to council, theyre going to think about it. The problem is airlines themselves have different needs and demands so the airline that only a little Short Haul Airline going up and down on domestic flights in a country doesnt need the same tracking capability as say, for example, an oceanic jet its getting that consensus. Im not apologizing for industry because, frankly, i think they could have done more faster. But the fact that they cant find it within 36 hours doesnt surprise me. Were over water, theyre searching. Richard, i think were a flying world. So people have access now to airline flights. And i think when we hear that weather potentially played a factor in this in an area that is rife with really intense thunderstorms it causes so many of us to fear, if we werent nervous about flying, this will increase our anxiety. So talk to me about the safety of airline travel. Have we gotten better . Oh absolutely. Lets look at the numbers, the number of incidents that have happened this year. Something like 111 crashes have taken place, not all of them fatal. On the incidents level, its been you know, a good year. Bearing in mind the size of the industry. Keep that in mind. Youre not talking about one man with one plane, youre talking about a vast industry. In terms of the number of fatalities bearing in mind airasia its not been so good. Youre talking about the worst year since 2005, but the statistics are skewed because of three particular incidents, this airasia flight 8501 malaysia 17 and malaysia 370 which make up a large number of those fatalities. And im going to put this in perspective. Lets say theres a thousand fatalities this year. Lets say a thousand fatalities. Now let me tell you that more than two, 2. 5 billion people will fly during the course of the year possibly up to three billion within a year or so. Take those statistics and start to see, yes, theres a risk but it is so small it is not even worth you and i contemplating it. Now, this afternoon im speaking to you on board a ship at the moment. In a few hours i will be in the air heading back to new york. Am i concerned on the safety question . No. Richard quest always manages to put it in perspective for us. We appreciate that. Safe travels to you, my friend. Nevertheless despite your complete lack of concern, safe travels. Investigators trying to piece together the flight of airasia flight 8501. Right now it remains a mystery as to just what happened to that plane and the 162 people on board. As with Malaysia Airlines flight 370, it has some of you asking pretty smart questions. Well post them to safety analyst david soucie mary schiavo and Richard Quest. We wont let you go too far, richard. David, well put the first question to you. Really interesting question. Weve mulled it over here as well. Could the brand have landed safely on water like the u. S. Airways plane did on the hudson river . Is it possible . Yes. Is it likely, no. If you look at the hudson river and what occurred there, it was calm, the waters were calm. After the fact even if he was able to successfully ditch the aircraft after the fact its the waves and thicks that upset the aircraft and flood the aircraft. If he had, if the flight landed on the water wouldnt something have put off a beacon at some point . Exactly. The procedure at that point is once you ditch the aircraft, you manually arm the emergency locator transmitter. So if you do that and if you put the rafts out which have similar type of transmitter they probably cast at a 400 megahertz area frequency and thats monitored 24 7. Within minutes youd know where the aircraft was. Mary schiavo, people asking this. Why didnt the pilot make a mayday call . You know, whats so interesting is they didnt make a mayday call to air Traffic Control but when i work investigations whats amazing is when we get the recordings from the cockpit and the pilots are so busy and in all the crashes ive worked theyre almost so calm and in so many of them they did not get off a mayday call. In a couple of them air france 447, they werent really aware of how dire a situation they were in. Others it is a battle. You hear the pilots fighting and straining and trying to save the plane. Its an unbelievable series of sounds but theyre busy and fighting and that is what im guessing in this case is why there was no mayday. They were working to save the lives. My goodness mary youve heard tough stuff. Lets put a question to richard. A viewer writes in because weve been talking about the weather in these area these intense thunderstorms. Could lightning have brought this plane down. Richard . Very unlikely. Very unlikely. And the aircraft is designed with lightning receivers on board, conductors on board. Ive been on a plane thats been hit by lightning a couple of times. What happens is you sometimes feel a jolt maybe a small smell on the aircraft but the lightning travels through the plane and out the back of it. Yes it could short out electrics if they werent properly wired or if there was something wrong but aircraft being hit by lightning is an everyday occurrence and it happens completely safely. It. It does. Its very disconcerting. Richard, i want to ask you a question about the news today. This radar image that people are talking about, which shows that perhaps the flight as it was ascending to 36,000 feet that it was going too slow. The necessity of doing it at a robust speed. Yeah. Basically, when youre doing a highaltitude climb, your margin for error on the strip or tape going into the red zone becomes a lot tighter than it does elsewhere because youve got less air pressure the aircraft is flying much faster to start with. Everything about the aerodynamics becomes more sensitive. And thats why pilots when they do make this climb, often its done with auto throttle often done with the autopilot. But when they make these highaltitude climbs and they are maneuvering the dramatic maneuvering of the aircraft at altitude then they have to be much more careful. Now, what seems to be here we dont know why. First we didnt know if this was an accurate and true diagram or pick fur picture. But if it is true why did the speed bleed off so dangerously . Was it because the pilots the way they were flying and they didnt notice it or was there an updraft or downdraft which literally took away the lift from the air . Because they were now in such a violent storm. So many questions to be answered. Richard quest, our thanks. Mary mary schiavo and david soucie thank you. You cant talk about north korea without talking about china. You need to have a hearttoheart with the chinese. I cant imagine anything this massive happening in north korea without china being involved. There you have it. Senator Lindsey Graham flat out accusing china of being part of the cyberattack on sony. The u. S. Blames north korea saying that this stems from the plans to release the interview in films. The movie has earned more than 115 million through online sales in the first four days of the release. Sony says it was rented or purchased more than 2 million times. Joining us to discuss this is former new mexico governor bill richardson. Good to have you. Hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season sir. What do you make of the idea that china could be behind the sony hack . Well i disagree with that assessment. China does have a lot of leverage over north korea. They give them food Financial Assistance fuel. But north koreas very independent. Theyve told china to stay out of pressuring them on Nuclear Negotiations with the u. S. I think china could be helpful here because a lot of the Telecommunications Infrastructure of north korea goes through china. There are a lot of north korean hackers stationed in china. But i dont i dont think north korea needs china to make the decision they made perhaps on this hacking. So china could be helpful but i dont see the plot of china being behind this. Ambassador, youve been to north korea. Youve spoken to north korean officials. Perhaps you can lend some insight into their thinking. Over the weekend they blamed the United States of being behind internet outages in north korea. And in the process, they called president obama a monkey. A monkey in a jungle. A flatout racist comment about president obama. This is north korea, a country so upset about a film that perhaps they attacked an entire company and shut down the Internet Company and yet they are willing to make a racist comment about another leader. This is consistent with their unpredictability rationality. Nothing seems to have changed between the father and now kim jongun in terms of their tactics of using profanity and racism. They have made these comments about the president and others before. These kind of racist comments. So they are in a cocoon. Their whole existence is based on a cult personality. So anything insult like the interview to the personality is almost like a military attack on them. So when youre talking about north korea, ive dealt with them for years. They dont think like years. They think in a different phase and what has happened there is fairly consistent with their unpredictability their irrationality, with their reproach to solving problems. They just dont seem to abide by international storms of standard and good behavior. So given all of that sir, what is the best course of action in terms of response . We know the president has vowed to respond. Is sanctions, increased sanctions, increased pressure on that nation is that the best course . Well i believe the president has been measured in his response. I dont know if were responsible for the internet problem in north korea. Its possible. But i dont know i saw the internet system in north korea. Its very weak. Its almost nonexistent, maybe 3 of the government can use it. But i think the response is good. I think stay find a way to have what are proportional sanctions. I would say putting them on the terrorism is one option. Another is banking sanctions that attack and deal with the north korean leadership trying to move money around. That is another option that we used before that was taken off. But i think right now a steady course is dont give them much attention. Dont give them the kind of attention that they want to get by a very response. Will you see the film the interview . I will see it. I will see it. It was shown here in santa fe at a George Martin you know the guy from game of thrones had it and i tried to get it but there was such a demand i couldnt get in. So yeah i will see it. All right. Hopefully your computers stay safe after making that announcement. And we look forward to hearing your review of the film as well. Thank you so much for joining us. All right. That is all for us today. Legal view today with a special guest star jake tapper begins right about now. Hello, everyone im jake tapper.
