Identified so far. One victim has already been laid to rest. In terms of the search bad weather is proving once again seeming to be the biggest obstacle in the search. I want to turn to Andrew Stevens in surabaya indonesia, where the flight originated and where many many of those families were from and where they are gathered awaiting news andrew can you update us . I know its night fall but what is the latest on the search and rescue effort where it stands now. Well on the search michaela there is still bad weather across the search zone and that bad weather is expected to continue over the next couple days so the frustrations are enormous. As you point out, theyve narrowed the probable location zone they call it down that 2,000 square miles. Thats still a fair chunk of territory but theyre now moving into an underwater search stage, basically because the weather is so bad that visibility is minimal and theyre not just getting anywhere with their visibility aerial checks. So theyve got chips on station there. Theyve got sophisticated listening devices, sonar there, more are coming and the plan is really to now grid that area looking for this fuselage. This is the key to the whole mystery, if you like. Theres a large piece of fuselage they think, with still many bodies inside which also they hope contains the black boxes, the voice recorder, the data recorder, thats what theyre looking for and, of course still looking for bodies. Along those lines, andrew, whats the latest in the victim identification process . Well four have been identified now, john. 30 bodies have been recovered, including 12 from the uss sampson which was was on sight today. The bodies have most of the bodies have been brought back here. In fact, weve just come from outside the naval base at the international airport, very sad procession we saw there, too, ten ambulances leaving the naval base coming down here to the Police Hospital for identification. But at this stage, there has only been four of the 30 bodies recovered and identified. That identification process will continue over the next few days around the clock as well. Its a painstaking process, they have to get it right. We dont know when the next i. D. S will be done but it will be an ongoing process obviously over the next few days. Andrew stevens for us in surabaya thanks so much. I want to bring in our aviation analyst here, les abend is with us, a commercial pilot. We have our safety analyst and former faa safety inspector david soucie. Hes written a new book Malaysia Airlines flight 370, why it disappeared and why its only a matter of time before it happens again. David, we want to talk about this report were getting from the local media in the region its very grim obviously, that there were three bodies located found floating with their seat belts on in a row. We have not been amd able to independently confirm that if this turns out to be true what does that tell you about what happened as the plane crash eded. Its really not determined. Theres other evidence that we wont talk about thats too gruesome sm on television but hopefully it will tell them one thing, which is the if it hit the water and broke up in a forward rate of speed, youd be able to tell that by the damages that the seat belt does to the body. If it was downed at a straight angle like this which would indicate a flat spin or stall, deep stall, like flight 447 that there are different types of injuries that you would see on those bodies mostly internal type things as well so theres some information that can be gained by the investigators on scene. Its nothing well get information about out here. Thats what theyd be able to fell from. It so les among these same reports that people were found strapped in their seats, theys also reports saying theyre seeing images of the tail underwater. We havent been able to confirm this but is the table separated from the rest of the fuselage . Is that something you would normally see or sometimes see in situations like this and why would that happen . What does that indicate . Well it indicates like dave has been saying, did it break up in flight or impact . That will define how it impacted and the fact that it may have been is it inverted . Right side up . That answers questions in the kind of water and the depths theyre talking about. These kind of searches are so painstaking and then you add we know theres 30 bodies that have been recovered. It feels as though that was a big jump in terms of recovery over the last few days, even progress is being made. Thats what it feels like from our end. Does that seem appropriate to you . It does because now we have clues. Once the bodies are identified it will be an enormous jump in the investigation because of the fact that they can place the bodies within a virtual model and theyll know when the bodies came from. That will give them clues because if they came from the same area then you could say thats where it broke up. They may be able to determine if they broke up in the air. If they did, the search will grow significantly because like with mh370 it was about six or seven miles across. That hadnt occurred to me you can put together a seating chart and you can backtrack and see where the different parts of the plane ended up. Back to the tail for a second. In a320 arent the black boxes in the tail . I think there is one of them in the tail and one is further forward so that would be good news if they found the tail. Now they can begin the process of recovering data from the cockpit voice recorder. Because in terms of the investigation, these are the holy grails in terms of the search. They want to get their hands on those and find out the information they want and, of course as of now we dont have any sense that theyre hearing any pings. No indication of that at all at this point, no. It was indicated by david gallo that theres a lot of shipping traffic so a lot of noise for those devices. Towed ping locators as we mentioned for those of you that are sort of new to this weve learned a lot, certainly with mh370. Youve both taught us a lot. So they have the side scan sonars they also have these towedtow ed ping locators and its important to talk about the acoustics of the ocean. It may not be very deep only 100 feet comparatively to some other portions of the ocean. This is fairly shallow. But theres still acoustic noise there that could be affecting search efforts. And the reason it was so sensitive to acoustic noise during the 370 search is because of the fact that we were kind of using it for what its not to be designed for. Its not designed to locate the aircraft. Its designed to locate the box within the aircraft after its under the water. So its more of a approximate using the hydro phones to find it locally because it can be under silt it can be under the aircraft. Its difficult to find. Its not like its sitting there on a shelf somewhere. Thats the part that underwater locator beacon, if its functioning normally is used for approximate location not for generalized search necessarily. Les, theres one other area. We talked about this this morning. There were reports that there was a twominute gap between the captain and the copilot asked to increase their altitude. To fly up to 32,000 feet to 36,000 feet maybe higher. That was twominute gap between when they asked permission and air Traffic Control responded. Most of us arent pilots so we dont know. Is two minutes a long time to wait for an answer . It isnt. When you make a request you understand depending upon what sector in. In the United States these controllers are busy with other airplanes going opposite directions crossing your route perhaps. And theyre talking to other controllers in other sectors so two minutes isnt an incredibly long time for that kind of request. I dont know what the circumstance is. Apparently that corridor is like a red eye across the United States. So i wouldnt find that unusual at all. Les, david, well ask you to stick around because ahead we know theres several theories about how the flight ended up in the water or hit the water. One indonesian official believes the pilot could have perhaps landed on the surface kind of like Sully Sullenberger style in the hudson. Well examine that possibility ahead at this hour. And then what a life. Well take a look at the life and legacy of former new york governor mario cuomo who passed away at 82. And were going to give you a story of race and redemption. See this beautiful woman . Well almost 60 years after being cut from the rose parade because shes africanamerican Joan Williams led the annual parade. Were going to talk to her about this significance of this. Especially now when were having this discussion about race in america. Shopping online is as easy as it gets. As crews find more bodies and hone in on what could be the airasia planes resting place, theres an interesting theory conjecture, perhaps, about the jet and how it could have ended up on the sea floor. Now cnn has not been able to confirm this report. Theres obviously not going to be any definitive answers until the flight data recorders or the black boxes are found. However, a former transport minister in indonesia, he seems to believe the pilot made a successful water landing. Think of what happened here in new york with the socalled miracle on the hudson almost six years ago. This official goes on to theorize that maybe once this flight 8501 somehow managed to get down in the java sea, a huge wave or waves hit it before the people on board could get out and thats what ultimately sank it. I want to bring back les and david to weigh in on this. This minister one of the reasons he has come up with this theory is because the pinger or one of the alarms didnt go off thats designed to go off on impact if you crash into the sea and they didnt get any indication of that so he is saying that might lend itself to the idea that there was a soft or controlled landing. Hes referring to the deceleration indicator. So if the elt decelerates quickly, which would be if the aircraft went in at a steep angle that it would then send out a signal to the satellite system that monitors it that says hey, youve had this deep impact. So hes then surmising that therefore the aircraft must have made a soft landing and didnt have a rapid deceleration. The problem is theyre made for land. Theyre for when the aircraft crashes on land. The antenna is external to the aircraft. As soon as that external antenna touches water it cant transmit its done. So that signal is going into the water not the air and the satellites cant pick it up. Another reason i dont believe that this theory is true is the fact that we have seats and seat belts that are separated from the aircraft. Had it been a successful ditching, the bodies and subsequently flooded or sunk. And some of those elts are inside the life rafts in case theres a ditching situation but when theyre immersed in water, just like david described for the aircraft one, theyre immersed in water, they wont transmit. Apparently captain sullenberger spoke to cnn about the kind of training pilots get for emergency landing. Lets play that sound. In the United States, in our flight simulators its not possible to practice a water landing. Before our water landing the only training wed ever gotten for a water landing was a theoretical classroom discussion. Of course there was a checklist, a protocol but wed never done it. So we had one chance to get right something wed never anticipated, never specifically trained for and being in the open ocean would be a much more challenging situation. But over water in general, its feature lester rain where depth perception is inherently difficult. Youre descending without engine thrust much steeper and rapidly than for a normal approach to a landing where you have thrust to make a more gradual approach. It would be a very challenging thing to do. But its theoretically possible. Theoretically possible. Lets remember. It is called the miracle on the hudson. What he did was essentially miraculous but is this even reasonable for them . I even wonder about the damage of putting out a theory like this. I had been talking about that theory with that same interview with sully that i felt that it was as well because the fact that the only thing we knew we had at the time was the emergency exit door and the slide which is associated with that door and then we had three bodies none of that points to anything but a successful ditching but as evidence comes in which is typical of any investigation, the riddles unfold and you get these answers. Now to me its far less likely than i thought it was. And les you saw the pictures there of the miracle on the hudson. The water on the hudson river was pretty flat. A lot different than theoretically in the java sea. What kind of things do you train for as a pilot . How much do you train for these types of situation s . S . Like captain sullenberger said its such an unlikely event. We read about it and have classroom discussion about it. Part of that would involve landing parallel toll the wave ss it takes a lot of talent to make it work out successfully. Theres been a lot there has been successful ditchings over airplanes but you know its certainly a plausible scenario but doesnt seem like. I have you done flight simulations . Ever tried it . No we do not. We dont practice those types of simulations. Its not a practical thing because you get to that point you know how to land an airplane so this is a matter of landing in the an unusual surface area. David you and i were talking off camera and i was needing comfort from you given the title of your book and the fact we all fly. There was some notion did this plane just fall out of the sky . And they dont just fall. The way they are designed is what was the statistic you were saying . The rate a plane would come down . Theres a as les can tell us, theres a lot of different kinds of stall. And with this situation were talking about a wing overthewing air stall, almost like what you saw in top gun with the flat spin. Thats the kind of thing as a reference that it might be. You have to remember a commercial jet is a swept wing airplane so it has different characteristics than say, your average piper cub or cessna. That has its own challenges and difficulties in recovery process. But in the certification of the airplanes we talk about the egress and the pilots may not be trained for ditching. However, in the certification of the aircraft when i was in toulouse about the airbus 380, the egress of the aircraft is well tested. They do in the the water, they take that huge aircraft put in the the water, literally put people in the airplane try the slides test the slides and it took two or three tries before they could get everybody out in the limited amount of time that you had so the egress of that part of that is very well tested. The aircraft wings are very well tested. Its really good. Really good system and good airplane. More comforting. Thanks to both of you. David, well ask you to stick around. Obviously we have more things we want to look at at this hour. Ahead for us. Well talk more about the black boxes. How they work and what information they will offer when they are found in this investigation. Mario cuomo was a giant. He personify it had American Mosaic certainly the new york mosaic. That was congressman peter king, a republican paying tribute to liberal icon mario cuomo who passed away yesterday at the age of 82. A threeterm Governor Cuomo was indeed a giant of new york politics but he never forgot hit humble roots. In a statement, president obama said cuomos own story taught him as americans we are bound together as one people. Our countrys success rests on the success of all of us not just a fortunate few. Mario cuomo liked to say you campaign in poetry you govern in prose. He did both. Simply it was the american dream. The son of italian immigrants mario cuomo rose from from thegrocery store in south jamaica queens where he slept on the floor and spoke no english to the highest office in new york state. Along the way creating a political legacy and dynasty that spanned generations. His life driven by a passion for learning his catholic faith and a determination to simply work harder than the other guy. One of the simple things i wanted to achieve is i want to be the hardest working governor there ever was. After more than a decade of the fullcontact politics of new york cuomo catapulted to National Prominence with the keynote address at the 1984 Democratic National convention. Let me thank you for the great privilege of being able to address this convention. He challenged head on Ronald Reagans notion of a shining city on a hill instead calling america a tale of two cities. We must get the American Public to look past the glitter, beyond the showmanship to the reality, the hard substance of things and well do it not so much with speeches that sound good as with speeches that are good and sound. It cemented him as one of his generations greatest orators. A defender of the havenotes and the little guys. It also made time choice of many Democratic Leaders to run for president. He said will you think about it . I said i have been thinking about. It are you going to think about it anymore . [ laughter ] he was considered a favorite for the democratic nomination in both 1988 and 1992 but in both cases he demured. His seaming inability to decide on Higher Office frustrated Democratic Party faithful and became something of a punch line in itself. And mario cuomo, no one knows what hes going to do. I dont know if youve seen his new Public Service commercial for new york city it says a mind is a terrible thing to make up. [ laughter ] he said it wasnt indecisiveness that kept him in new york instead of washington it was his commitment to the state. It has nothing to do with my chances. It has everything to do with my job as governor and i dont see that i can do both therefore i will not pursue the presidency. He said it was that same commitment that led them to pass on a nomination to the supreme court, deciding instead to run for a fourth term as governor. But 12 years was enough for new york. He was defeated by George Pataki in the republican revolution of 1994. Cuomo returned to the private sector to restart his law practice host a radio show and become a prolific author and public speaker. And in 2010 came a brand new title, former or first Governor Cuomo, a word he would be forced to use because he was suddenly no longer the only one. In a bittersweet irony, his eldest son andrew, the Current Governor of new york was sworn in to a second term just hours before his fathers death. He couldnt be here physically today, my father but my father is in this room. Hes in the heart and mind of every person who is here. Hes here and hes here. And his inspiration and his legacy and his experience is what has brought this state to this point. So lets give him a round of applause [ applause ] governor mario cuomo, a true american giant, was 82. He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years matilda, his five children including our cnn new day anchor chris and 14 grandchildren. The constants of his life always faith and family. A much younger chris cuomo in that family image right there. Obviously our condolences go out to the entire family and our friend who loved his pop. I love though that he called his dad his pop. I had a chance to spend time with his dad and his mom and chris a few months ago and it was really amazing how even at this advanced age and in struggling health he was still that orator. He and chris talked about a number of world issues. They talked baseball they talked football. And he still just loved conversation and thought and words. It was really really tremendous. And the one thing you want to say is you know mario cuomo was proud of his son chris, also. Absolutely. Absolutely. Lets move on and check other news now. Heres a look at our other headlines. Outgoing Senate Majority leader harry reid spending the new year in the hospital. His office says he broke a number of ribs and bones in his face. New developments from the search for flight 8501. Search crews are focusing on an area of about 2,000 square miles. Roughly the size of delaware. A top indonesian official says this is the most probable area of the java sea where the planes fuselage might be located. They have recovered more of the planes wreckage including what appears to be a window panel. This photo was posted online by the minister of defense of singapore. Officials say 30 bodies have now been pulled from the sea, four have been identified so far. Really the biggest obstacle in the search is the weather. That has been the case from the very beginning of this tragedy. Its been a very frustrating day for the divers dealing with some waves reportedly as high as 13 feet. Our Paula Hancocks spoke with a few of them about their vital but gruesome mission. Loading up to rejoin the operation, police and searchandrescue teams prepare for the ten hour journey back to the crash scene. Lastminute checks for divers facing the grim task of looking for bodies. This man couldnt even get into the water on his last trip, the weather made it impossible this is my life he says. Its just too much of a risk. With waves of up to four meters or 13 feet todays condition are no better. The regions chief of police says the weather is without doubt the biggest obstacle in finding these victims. Id like to tell the families we are doing our best to get their loved ones out he says. We apologize if its taking longer than hoped. A searchandrescue boat docks nearby returning from a day near the crash site. The captain says they will not stop searching until everyone is found. We were supposed to collect debris from a singaporeanship near the site he says but we gave up because the weather was too bad to do the handoff safely. A delivery of body bags for the police ship then disappointing news. Ive just been told this police boat is not going anywhere today. The weather is simply too bad. Another frustrating day for divers who desperately want to give distraught families some closure. Paula hancocks cnn, indonesia. Our thanks to paula for that report. We want to bring in Sea Operations specialist tim taylor and our meteorologist chad myers to talk about these challenges. First, chad i want to talk to you about the weather, how things are right now and where theyre headed. Well were running up to midnight local time their time so theres not really we wont have planes in the sky looking for debris in the water at this dark hour. But it does get better from here. Today, tomorrow are not great. But sunday will be the best day of the search and that may be the day that they actually can find something because waves will be about two to three feet. I cant imagine trying to get two ships side by side at 13foot waves. These arent swells. This is shallow water, relatively. Its 100 feet deep. Your waves are steeper because the wave action bounces off the bottom and your waves are not a roller like youll get out in 125,000 foot seas or 15,000 feet deep where the wave just does this. These are more sharp. Today we will see some showers and storms as they wake up but not as bad as theyve been and then eventually well start to get the wind to die off. It will take a while. It will take 48 more hours but there you see the showers popping up here and there so nothing all that organized. Nothing like the pilot saw when he was flying into that massive wall of thunderstorms. Thats the good news. The wind today still about 20 Miles Per Hour. Thats going to make about a tenfoot swell. Then we start to go down from there. Notice the yellow starts to go away. The orange is almost completely gone. Then by sunday all we have is blue which means less than 10 Miles Per Hour and those waves will settle down quite quickly. Well, thats remarkable and its certainly what they need to have Mother Nature cooperate. Tim, youre an accomplished sea explorer. Youve been here with us a lot. You can give us an idea of what its like for these divers and for the search crews to be out there, especially when it comes to the underwater search. Its monsoon season were hearing reports of 13foot waves. How does that impact the search underwater, snow. Even if it calms down it will be turbid. All the water that rains onland runs off and brings dirty water to settle out. It takes days or weeks for that to settle out and get some clarity. I noticed there from the footage that theyre using open circuit divers which is scuba. So thats theyre dropping these guys in here. Usually on a commercial job theyll have tether divers and theyll nowhere they are. So thats more dangerous because theyre on their own going into wrecks or trying to find penetrate into these areas with very little visibility. Thats tough. Interesting. So the water is cloudy, dirty, you cant see through it and that will last even when the conditions improve . Very much so. It will take a while to settle it. Theres no gulf stream current to sweep it clean fast. But once these waves and the wind stop that is at least one of the obstacles out of the way. Oh yes. But its got to stop for some period of time. This is a battle these guys are going to be undertaking for its the season. Its the monsoon season. Weve been talking about this more focused search area. I think its important to say more focus because its still 2,000 square miles. In terms of a search area, is that large . Is that im taking that to read its still 2,000 square miles because theyre still looking for debris and things floating and thats been scattered. So im sure they have more of a concentrated area theyre looking for the plane because theyre taking that data and bringing it back to ground zero tracking it back. As days go by you know from flight 370 it widens out the search area and the debris and that debris could have bodies so were looking for bodies. That search area has to be wide. Thats a visual Aerial Search area. What tools do you have back underwater again . What tools do they have at their disposal underwater to help with the search . Some may be affected by that cloudy water youre talking about, others not as much right . Visually the divers but all the rest of it, the sonar pinging, that can work in turbid water. Sonar sees right through it. Its the tool of choice. So finding the wreckage recovering the bodies is the priority and so thats whats going to be suffering the most setback with weather, turbidity and the divers. We heard some sound translate there had from one of the searchers. Their lives are precious and you have to take that into account that these are humans that youre asking to dive into these conditions to send down below to do this. So this is another reason why this takes time. It will take a lot of time. And if you want to take a good example, the Costa Concordia which was on land next to shore they knew where it was the whole time. I dont recall but they might have had a diver lost in that and they didnt find last body until they raised the ship. So this could be months and months and months. Obviously nobody wants that but those are the realities. Tim taylor always a pleasure to have you here with us. Thanks so much for your expertise. One of the victims of the airasia crash was a 22yearold Flight Attendant. She had been a Flight Attendant for two years. Nis nis nisa as she was affectionately known by her family was still wearing her uniform. Her parents in sumatra showed cnn her photos. Goodbye nisa. Heart breaking. Our hearts go out to that family and all the others still waiting. 162 families. Ahead for us at this hour searches still looking for the black boxes from 8501. Well have our expert explain exactly what information they contain, how to get to it and what it may tell us about what happened to this aircraft. And a little later, she was uninvited from riding in the rose parade because of her race. Now, 56 years later, this africanamerican grandmother found redemption along colorado boulevard in pasadena. Narrator this is the storm sea captain theres a storm comin narrator that whipped through the turbine which poured. Surplus energy into the plant which generously lowered its price and tipped off the house which used all that energy to stay warm through the storm. Chipmunk theres a bad storm comin narrator the internet of everything is changing how energy works. Is your Network Ready . So bad weather, really bad weather, during monsoon season is hampering the search for flight 8501s flight data recorders. We know they contain valuable information. Here are a few things you need to know about black boxes. First of all, as we said about 10,000 types they are not black, they are orange. They are located in the tail section of an airbus a320. They store about 25 hours of information about the planes altitude air speed, engine performance, other data. Then theres the cockpit voice recorder. It has two hours of interaction with air Traffic Control. David, you have worked with these black boxes and youre author of a new book Malaysia Airlines flight 370, why it disappeared and why it will happen again. Lets get that in there. Now the orange black boxes sitting in front of you, how do you get the information . With the new ones youre basically able to plug it in much like you would put a peripheral into your computer, a separate piece into your computer. However getting to that point is not very easy because it has to be brought out of the ocean in its similar environment, meaning it has to be con caseencased, then transitioned you put in the salt water . You leave in the the water it was retrieved with. If its deep you keep it pressurized at that similar level of pressure. In this case they may or may not have to do that. Once it comes up, its a rinsed and flooded with fresh, clean, deie deionized water then its determined if the case has been breached. If the case has been breach there hads more work because you have to take it apart piece by piece and clean those pieces all of those individual components to make sure theres no salt or connectivity on it. So finding it issue one. Retrieving it issue two. Downloading or uploading the data three. And then analyzing that data. Theres so many pieces of information they want to listen to the sound of the recording of the pilots and how their voice inflection was and what they were communicating with air Traffic Control and also how the airplane was performing correct . Right. And putting those two things together is like the exponential improvement in what you know about the investigation. So i think we have a graphic about the analysis thats done on these black boxes and the one that ive got here is from flight 447. And what its showing us is you take the voice alongside of the actual data. So for example, across the top we have the cockpit voice recorder information and you can see where the pilots are talking to each other, the pilot versus the first officer. Below that you see all of the movements of controls. Heres where its real important. For example, he says i think youre pulling up. I think the aircraft is climbing. And the copilot says am i . He didnt really realize he was pulling the stick back. If you look down below, it shows you that he was pulling the stick back so thats how it was determined that there was some kind of confusion about his reaction and what he was thinking at the time of the accident which would indicate there was some kind of panic or that he wasnt acting appropriately to it. The third thing thats really important about this is that the cockpit voice recorder not only keeps track of the input, the Movement Towards the aircraft and whats sent to the computer but it also has information and sensors on each of the Flight Controls that will tell fit he wants to climb and he pulls back does the Flight Control make the appropriate action . And that would tell you if theres a break or mechanical failure in that system. So what happened, what was meant to happen, you can plot that all against itself. Now all of this seems like really crucial data. None of it and im not a computer expert seems like its more complicated than any other kind of data. It seems like the type of thing you could transmit much more frequently than they do. If you can be on wifi on an airplane why couldnt these be sending things back . Absolutely. Theres not much information on this. My cell phone probably has more data than this does. And so why its being not being transmitted and it doesnt have to be transmitted at one time. Currently what happens, too, is if they use the acars data which a lot of this is similar to acars data some airlines wait until the aircraft lands and the gear is actually sitting on the ramp before it starts uploading data about the flight that it was just finished. But if its sent a little piece at a time it would make this much easier. Wed know a lot more about where this airplane went down. Well hear more pushes to hear v that kind of technology implemented soon again. Well be talking about that. Thanks david. Ahead for us at this hour, a story of racism and redemption. We have a story now, a tale of redemption more than half a century in the making. It was 1958 when Joan Williams was picked to represent city employees. She was named miss crown city and set to ride on a float in the rose parade. But when a reporter discovered that the fairskinned working mother was africanamerican the invitation vanished. Williams has said she didnt dwell on that snub that racism in those days was simply quote, a fact of life. But 50 years later, those facts have changed. Now 82 years old, williams received an official apology and as the pageantry unfolded for the yesterday tournament of roses parade williams was seated on the float. There she is under that red blanket. Heres her reaction to seeing the float for the very first time. Oh boy they are going on one by one. All good things happen in time. It puts a little on the hurt big time and im glad that the community was open and ready to make an apology. Joan Williams Joins us now by phone from pasadena. Joan i understand it was a cold but Beautiful Day yesterday in pasadena. How was that ride down colorado boulevard . Oh it certainly was. It was very cold. So unusual for new years day in pasadena. But, you know we dressed for it and it couldnt dampen the festivity. It was a beautiful, Beautiful Day. It was a Beautiful Day and a beautiful ride in so many ways. After all these years, you got an apology from officials in pasadena. What was it like to finally read those official words were sorry . Well it meant everything. Because all the all the media blitz was happening and people were interested and i was very appreciative of that. But i hadnt really had a true apology. And new years eve i opened the front door and there on my porch was an envelope. I had no idea that someone had come to the door and they left that envelope and when i opened it it was an official letter from the Mayors Office on their stationery and it was finally an official apology. And i really appreciated that. Miss joan im so sorry to interrupt you. I know that your husband your late husband was a tuskogee air airman. He had to face racism challenges through his life. You dont harbor any bitterness about this. You sort of said that you do have a lot of feelings but bitterness isnt among them . No no no. If the people of color carried bitterness with them at all times, they wouldnt be able to get on with their lives because here in this country, unfortunately, Many Americans are not seen as human beings and i really really want my country to rid itself of all the hate and disparity that we see. And interestingly enough some years ago, michaela you officiated at a teacher of the year affair here in our city and my son was one of those who was a teacher of the year. Hes now in turkey teaching and wow. And hes appalled at the way that america is seen from afar. Yes. We have so much work to carry on with here in our nation. We understand youre about to receive your first great grandson very soon your son and other rest of your family is so very proud of you. We thank you for joining us to share this experience mrs.
