And the investigation moving forward as they try to reconcile what has traditionally been the safest city in this state with wapd on saturday morning. Back to you. Were going to be back to you very shortly. Any moment now we are actually expecting to get an update from officials in dayton, ohio. At least nine People Killed there early sunday morning. Police have not yet commented on any possible motive behind that attack. They actually were very careful over the weekend to not start piecing things together yet. Were going to bring you that News Conference as soon as it begins because we are following two tragedies on two front. Cnns ryan young is there to dayton, ohio. Ryan, are you getting a sense of what we can possibly here from officials any moment now . Thats one thing that we all sort of have a question mark over. We see the Fire Department is gathering here. They might be able to talk about how they were able to respond and help some of the wounded. When you think about the crime and the impact on this community which has been through over the last few months. They had a tornado that devastated parts of this community and now they have the shooting where almost 2,000 people were on the same street having a remembrance and memorial for all the people whose lives were lost. Youre talking about something that happened very quickly. That shooter of course walked down that street and started firing and then you see the First Responders who responded so quickly who were able to take him down within 30 seconds. When you hear that sound from that memorial last night, i can tell you there were so many people who were crying. We watched people who collapsed into the arms of some of the First Responders there because they were thanking them so much. One of the things that stood out to all of us is when the governor took the stage last night and was trying to talk about what he wanted to see happen with the memorial. So many people started screaming do something. They kept screaming do something until he had to stop talking at the memorial. People are frustrated and want to see change. Then theres been talk about the alleged shooter having a hit list all the way back to high school. Theres been a conversation in this community how did this go unchecked. And then the were fact that he was with his sister and she was among the one dead. There was all the conversation about what could the motive be. Have they been able to check his social media . What happened that led to this. Six of them were africanamericans. And when you watch the video that you saw, all the people running back inside, you realize that if he would have made it into the club with that weapon this could have been far, far worse, even as devastating as it is. The way its been described is it would have been c catastrophic had he been able to make it into that location. Youre at the press conference and were going to be hearing from officials any moment. Its so jarring to see that video of all these people running back in to the building, but also then jeuks ta pose tha with the vigil, those happening within hours of each other and what is happening in American Cities and american streets right now. Its truly horrific. Were going to bring that to you. Ryan is at the press conference. Were going to get back to ryan as soon as the conference begins. Lets turn to the white house. Because as i mentioned, President Trump addressed the nation this morning in the wake of these two deadly shootings. Listen. The shooter in el paso posted a manifesto online consumed by racist hate. In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy. These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in america. President trump also called on lawmakers to reform Mental Health laws and he also cast blame on the quote, unquote, violence in video games, adding that hes asked the department of justice to seek the Death Penalty for win convicted of murder as a hate crime. White house correspondent pamela brown is joining me live. The president did say a lot of things but i found it also strange, he did not mention the changes that he had suggested just hours earlier this morning on twitter, like tougher background checks and perhaps in his suggestion tying it to immigration reform. What are you hearing from there . Thats absolutely right. The president clearly wanted to keep the focus on this being a Mental Health issue. He really seemed to stay away from anything having to do with gun violence, reform, anything having to do with background checks. As you said, he tweeted about that this morning, connecting it to immigration. In the past publicly he had supported universal background checks and then backed away under pressure from the nra. What was so absent was any discussion about the president s own rhetoric. The white houses response today is to not discuss that public cloe and that includes president. He didnt acknowledge his own rhetoric and whether its fanning the flames. Behind the scenes, white house officials are defensive about that suggestion that his rhetoric played any role in the el paso shooting. The shooter used some of the same language in his manifesto that the president had used, though the shooter said he had his own views before President Trump. The backtoback shootings from a blow to the white house given the magnitude of the tragedies. The president made clear today as i pointed out his focus is on Mental Health and not guns. He focused repeatedly on the hate and evil that droiives the acts. Heres what he said. Mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger, not the gun. So there you have it, kate. President trump said today he supports red flag laws that allows Law Enforcement and family members to petition a course to prevent access to firearms for someone who is a danger. He also said he would direct the doj to propose legislation so that people who commit hate crimes will have the Death Penalty. He looked backwards and says his legislation has prevented pump stocks. In the past the president has supported other gun control measures such as raising the age limit for buying rifles. He seemed to support assault weapons bans and background checks, but he then backed away under pressure from the nra. Clearly today he is trying to keep the focus on the fact that this was a Mental Health issue. He talked about video games, the role the internet plays. And again did not talk about his own rhetoric at all, kate. Pamela, thank you so much. Youre really putting it together perfectly, what we just heard from the president. Joining me now is immigration attorney and analyst, who is in el paso actually this weekend with his family, cnn political analyst and White House Correspondent for the atlantic and National Reporter for politico. Thank you for being here. You heard what the president had to say. Pamela brown kind of laid it out perfectly, the things that he had suggested, but also the things that were kind of left out. I mean, do you get a sense that there is really Something Different this time coming from the white house . Whats helpful and instructive in this moment is to understand that whether its with this shooting or las vegas or parkland is the president s instinct in the aftermath of these incidents is to go for gun control measures, whether its universal background checks or even going so far as to ban assault rifles. Thats what he called for immediately after parkland last year, gathering with senators like Dianne Feinstein to say he wants to act on this. But as we saw this morning he tweeted on universal background checks and an hour or two hours later he is giving the speech and as pam was just speaking on, where he didnt mention gun control at all. So it does elucidate for us the control that the gop has in moments like this and the nra. So if past is prologue, no, i dont think anything will change. Im going to interrupt one second. This is the mayor of dayton speaking right now for an update on that horrific shooting. Im glad youre here for this 11 00 briefing. I have city manager shell dicksteen and chris shaw and michelle lovely, obviously chief richard biehl, fire chief payne. I have a way of actually demoting people sometimes. Im trying to do better. Weve had a busy morning this morning. Ive been very impressed with the outpouring of the spirit of the Community Last night, folks coming together in the oregon district. The oregon district is open. A lot of you who may not be from here, well talk about how the oregon district seems closed. Just a point of reference, its a localowned businesses and so a lot of those localowned businesses close regularly on sunday and monday. That is very typical for them. So if youre a regular in dayton you know which restaurants are open on monday and which ones arent. The majority of them, thats their weekend. So i want you to make sure in your coverage ive heard that a couple of times and folks have said they say its open but it seems to be closed. Its because its sunday and monday. I know some of the places are planning on opening just because of this on monday, even though theyre normally not open. But we are respecting what they have to do to go through as local businesses. Im going to turn it over to chief biel next to give an update. Theres not Much Movement but wanted to give him some time for some comments this morning. Thank you. Thank you, mayor. I do have just very brief update. I want to remind you that we are less than 36 hours into this incident and its investigation. I can confirm that if all the magazines that have been recovered from the suspect were completely full, and we have not had a chance to examine that. We just know we have magazines with bullets in them. But if all of those were completely at full capacity, including the loose rounds found on the ground near him, as well as in a backpack that he carried, he would have had a maximum of 250 rounds in his possession at the time. We can confirm at least 41 spent shell casings from his weapon based on their location and his path of travel. Thats at least 41. As you well understand, in a very dynamic and chaotic scene as this was, with people running through the crime scene, with First Responders running through the crime scene, with emergency ems traveling through the crime scene, evidence can be lost. So we can say at least 41 spent shell casings from the suspect. As it relates to the officers, we have recovered 48 45caliber shell casings, 16. 233 shell casings and one shotgun shell casing. In terms of the persons injured, were getting different information from other sources of persons treated in the hospitals, so we have previously said 27. Theres some information theres 32. I can confirm to you that there is at least 14 of those injured, whether that number is 27 or 32, at least that were injured through gunshot wounds. So many people were injured through other means in their flight from this very chaotic event. There are autopsies currently being completed by the coroners office, so that is a process that is still undergoing and it will be some time. Thats really all i have to share thus far this morning. Thank you, chief. Next im going to invite fire chief payne to come forward and speak a little bit about some of the First Responders from the fire ems response. Good morning, everybody. So at 1 07 dayton Fire Department received their first dispatch to respond to the oregon district. We responded with one fire crew and one medic, which is dispatch protocol for a shooting. Immediately upon a rierriving oe scene we realized that we had multiple people down. We upgraded it to a mass casualty incident, which called for additional response personnel and command units. And then it was expanded once again shortly thereafter. Our crews transported five people to the hospital, b3 from medic 14, one from medic 10 and actually river side medic crew transported another. Many of those people that did make it to the hospital selftransported. And so we initiated our mass casualty protocol. We put command units in place and we did our triage and treatment and then we facilitated the transfers to the hospitals in a balanced manner so we didnt overload any one hospital. There are 37 total patients treated at area hospitals and they resulted from injuries as a result of gunshot wounds, being trampled and then lacerations from fleeing the scene in broken glass. As youre aware, we had nine victims, plus the shooter that were pronounced at the scene. And as of 9 00 this morning we have eleven victims still hospitalized. Thats all i have at this time. Thank you, chief. Next i would like to invite michelle lovely to come forward to talk a little bit about what were doing with the funds for the victims families and those that have been affected by this incident. Michelle. Weve been approached by community members, companies, individuals, just tons of people wanting to know how they can help and what they can do. And once again, the Dayton Community is just such a strong community. Unfortunately, after the tornadoes and now this, just the Community Shows once again that were dayton strong. So we have developed a fund at the Dayton Foundation and anyone can give to that. Thats the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund and the fund number is 8365. So you can give right on our website at Dayton Foundation. Org. You can also send a check to the Dayton Foundation with that fund listed in the memo line. But we have had a lot of questions about how were using the funds and how much weve collected and we are just as anxious as all of you to get our arms around that. But were less than 24 hours with our fund being opened, so we are meeting actually today at noon to talk to weve been approached by Community Foundations all across the United States who have been through unfortunately been through situations like this. So theyre providing guidance to us ask were also consulting with our council on foundations so find out how we should appropriately be managing these funds and make sure that theyre put out in the community in the best way possible. Thank you. Ill now open it for questions. I want to ask the chief, do you have any greater clarity on the sister and the mutual friend of the gunman and whether you talked to the mutual friend yet about that whole situation on the night . Weve had the opportunity to have some conversation. I will say theres more conversation needed. I will not say at this point we have clarity of the entirety of the relationship. You talked about how the three of them are aspirathad se at some point. Do the other two know when i mean, did he get the gun out of the car when they all three pulled up originally. We have no information at this time to suggest that they were aware of the weapons or when they were introduced into this environment. We have no information at this time. Reporter were they in the trunk of vehicle or did he leave them in another location and after they aspirated did he go get it . We dont have that determined with certainty. We do know the shotgun was recovered in the trunk. But exactly how they were transported to the scene has not been clarified. Reporter what is the condition of the excome pan yen . I believe hes still being treated in the hospital. He received a gunshot wound to the lower torso. Reporter you said its only been 36 hours. Less than. Reporter how close are you in your mind at this point to establishing a motive . Not close enough. Not close enough at all. We have a lot of evidence still to go through. Just based on where were at now, we are not seeing any indication of race being a motive, but we are not through all the evidence. And so until were through all the evidence we cannot rule that out. But im saying were not seeing anything at this time that suggests race is a motive. Reporter obviously this is your community. If you could, i mean going to that vigil last night, seeing all these people, i cant imagine the stress that youre under and the pain you feel for this community. Can you talk a little bit about your heart and what youve seen over the last few hours and what youve been dealing with . I think ive spoken a lot about the grit and the determination of this community. And surely the 8 00 vigil was no different. You know grieving is a process and as the chief said, were probably 35 hours into this process. But, you know, i have no doubt that this community and its resilience and its willingness to see through. Weve seen through many things in this community and i know that theyll come together, that were coming together strong again here. Im going to let commissioner mims and shaw answer this question as well. Its very interesting. First of all, thank you all for being here. Its very interesting to see such a sea of so many people who had their hearts showing on their sleeves, those who were concerned about the nine victims, which i think was uppermost in terms of everyones mind, thinking about them and their families. Having the ministers say some of the kind of things that they said that help people understand our reason for being here. Our goal is to provide as much safety as we can for our cities. We escaped two major tragedies in terms of a visit from a hate group back a couple months ago and we were able to escape even the, what, 14 to 15 tornadoes without any loss of life as well. And then for this to come and hit us at such a hard time, you know, were all still emotional about this in terms of how we digest these issues. And some of you know when we Start Talking about assault weapons, being a vietnam vet i understand clearly the damage that those type of weapons can inflict upon individuals. And they have no place in the hands of average everyday citizens. So we do need to have more work done at the federal and state level to make sure that we minimize these type of situations for the future. Thank you, commissioner. Yes, i agree with what the mayor and commissioner said. The mayor is right that grieving is a process and weve had Great Sadness over the last many hours. But now its really turning to anger. Anger about the lack of movement on gun control. We are not the First Community thats been affected by this gun violence and we wont be the last. But we have got to do something and i want to push the legislature and federal government to move on responsible gun control in this community and this country. So thats what i want to leave you with. Reporter i have a question. When he turned the corner and his sister and her friend were there, do you think he targeted them or was it an accident . Was he just spraying in sdri discriminately . Its a question ive asked more than once and i dont think we can know that for certainty. It seems to just defy believability that he would shoot his own sister, but its also hard to believe that he didnt recognize that was his sister. So we just dont know. Reporter the companion, do you have any idea what time they got there . I dont have that information available. Were piecing some of that together. We have a lot of information that we havent gotten through yet. We do know there was some communication once they aspirated, but i dont think we have all those timelines established yet. Reporter is the companion cooperating . As best as i know. Reporter when he was headed toward the mad pepper and you talked about him not being able to get inside, do you have any information about an earlier incident in the night where he may have tried to get in earlier and been denied entry . There was some information early on, but i havent been able to be a part of any conversations to tease that out and to clarify that. Bt i do know there was some indication of him being denied entrance. But i cant confirm that with certainty. Reporter has the companion spoken to investigators today . Not that im aware of. Reporter is he slated to speak . Not that im aware of. Again, theres a lot of other things that were working on today, as well as our federal partners, which are expediting the transportation and analysis of digital evidence. So theres a lot more going on behindthescenes here than just following up with various individuals that we need to interview. Theres a lot of parts in motion. Reporter do you know anything about the gunman making a hit list in high school or a rape list . I know theres information out in the media. Were clearly exploring every possible piece of information we have. Im a little bit reluctant, even if theres such evidence, to interpret it ten years later as somehow this is indicative of what happened yesterday. So i think i will tell you the mistake that is made and i understand your interest to try to get information out and to help people understand. But by taking pieces of evidence and coming to conclusion about its significance creates mistakes, large mistakes at times. Ive seen it too often in national incidents. Piecemealing information does more to misinform than inform. So we really dont know until we have all the information and all the evidence available. Well take one more question. Reporter were wondering, do you know how many were hit by bullets and shrapnel versus trampled, and whether the officers will be made available for interviews at some point . The officers are still on administrative leave so they are not going to be available for interviews. And your first question . You said 14 that we could confirm nonfatal that have been treated. Of the 27, 32. And jeff had a different number. So clearly a couple dozen people who were treated for nonlifethreatening injuries, 14 of which we can confirm were gunshot wounds. Reporter i spoke with the president yesterday evening. He called. I think it was around 6 00, 6 30 before the vigil. Okay. We appreciate you all being there. I know youll be out and about on 5th street and through the community. Were really going to take these yesterday we did like an every threehour clip. I dont want to keep on calling you in when we dont have anything new. So the investigation will take longer periods of time. So youll hear from us the next time we have something new to share. Reporter can we have one more question . Maybe. Reporter thank you very much. Can you talk more about the acquisition of that firearm and your thoughts on your citizens owning such large magazines . Its problematic. It is fundamentally problematic. To have that level of weaponry and a civilian environment, unregulated, is problematic. Reporter and his ability to purchase that online and bring it into your community and modify it to function as a rifle. Reporter and how did he do that, chief . Im not the expert in that, but i can tell you that it was modified, in essence, to function like a rifle. That much i can tell you. Im sure you can talk to experts out there how that gets done. And to avoid any legal prohibitions. Thank you. Were really done. Thank you, guys. Have a good one. All right. You heard from the mayor of dayton, police chief, fire chief as well with an update. Clearly this investigation is going to be a long one as they always are. Some of the information that did come out early on in the press conference, just to reiterate, is that the police chief confirms that if all the magazines that the shooter had on him were full, that was a maximum of 250 rounds in that mans possession. At least 41 spent shell casings on the part of the shooter did they find at the scene. And in terms of motive, theyre nowhere near determining that yet. Theyre just saying that theyre not seeing an indication of race being a motive. But the police chief very careful to say that that part of the investigation is not complete yet. And at the very end saying very clearly the level of fire power and the magazine capacity that that man had on him, he says is fundamentally problematic. That is the update from dayton. We have much more to come, including this. Coming up, police say the suspect in the el paso massacre is showing, quote, no regrets, and also no remorse for killing 20 innocent people. And that, he posted a racist manifesto before the attack. We have the very latest on the investigation. Thats coming up. Plus democratic president ial candidate ohio congressman tim ryan is standing by and is going to be joining us in a moment. I want to get his take on what the president said today and the latest in dayton and where we go from here. It is exactly what is not supposed to be happening in america, everyday life, going to walmart, going out for an evening, turning into a crime scene in an instant. Lives shattered again through gun violence, again. In dayton, ohio the gunman was brought down within 30 seconds of his first shot. 30 seconds. And he was still able to kill nine people, 27 others were injured. 30 seconds. Heres what President Trump said about the Mass Shootings in dayton and el paso, texas just last hour. Open wound cannot heal if we are divided. We must seek real bipartisan solutions. We have to do that in a bipartisan manner that will truly make america safer and better for all. I am open and ready to listen and discuss all ideas that will actually work and make a very big difference. Republicans and democrats have proven that we can join together in a bipartisan fashion to address this plague. Here with me now is democratic president ial candidate, the democratic congressman from ohio, tim ryan. Thank you for being here. I want to get your take thank you. On what you make of the president s marks that you heard from him this morning talking about the shooting. That may be the most disingenuous thing hes said. He has two bills that are sitting at the senate, one on background checks, one on closing the charleston loophole that would immediately go into effect if the senate would pass it. He said he was going to veto both of those bills. And i just think that is a slap in the face to the victims, not just over the last 36 hours, but all victims of gun violence in the past however many years weve been trying to deal with this. And hes injecting immigration into this . Thats a joke. That is disgusting. Hes going to tie one of the most polarizing issues in the country, that quite frankly he has made copolarizing. This president has been playing the race card and the immigration card and now he wants to tie the toxic debate to some simple gun reform provisions that have 80 of the support of the american people. This is not leadership. He couldnt even get the town right. He said toledo. I was going to ask you about that, congressman. I didnt know what to make of it. For our viewers, let me play the moment so you know what im talking about. This is at the very end of the president president s remarks this morning. May god bless the memory of those who perished in toledo and may god protect them. I dont actually know what to make of that. What do you . Its heartbreaking, because hes showing diminished capacity, mental capacity to be able to lead. Thats what i see when i hear that. You could grab anybody on the streets of the United States and they would know dayton and el paso after the last 36 hours. And to have the president of the United States, it just shows the level of disengagement. Its indicative of what else he said during that press conference, how disconnected he is from whats happening in the country today. I think he has a diminished mental capacity to be able to deal with the big problems that we have in the United States today and its right on the heels of being so disconnected with his speech, bringing in immigration and the other things that weve already talked about. Its a slap in the face to the people here in dayton. The strangest bit about it well, a strange thing is that he did not mention he mentioned on twitter the need for more background stricter background checks and possibly linking it to immigration reform. He made no mention of that, though, in his speech. In his speech he talked about red flag laws, toughening Mental Health laws, taking on violent video games and social media, developing tools to detect mass shooters before they strike and making sure the Death Penalty is in place for murder as a hate crime. Of what the president listed out, you say its disingenuous. Do you see any bipartisan opening in what he listed out this morning . Sure. I think the red flag law is a great place to start. He mentioned background checks. Theres a universal background checks sitting at the senate. He should tell Mitch Mcconnell get back in session, pass these bills that the democrats have sent over to you. Lets not make this a partisan issue. It has support of 80 of the american people. The charleston loop hool, too, extending the check to ten days so we can ensure that people who are getting their hands on these weapons are clear and vetted properly and we have the time to appropriately do that. But the problem is, kate, he gave a very similar speech after the parkland shooting in florida how many months back. So hes got no credibility on this issue. Hes got to if he wants to rebuild trust with the american people, call the senate back into senate in washington, d. C. , tell Mitch Mcconnell to pass the two bills that we sent over to him and begin rebuilding the trust with the american people. But he has said hes going to veto both of those bills. Theyve got 240 votes in the house. Theyre supported by 80 of the american people. Lets move on those and lets not have a polarizing discussion. Do you have any discussion that the house speaker, that nancy pelosi is looking to call you all back in order to put more pressure on the Senate Majority leader to do the same . I dont know. There was a call happening soon that ill be jumping on. Im not sure. The reality is that there are two bills already sitting at the senate. So for the house to come back and do anything else thats not going to go anywhere in the senate isnt going to prove anything. Mitch mcconnell should call the senate back, pass these two bills and i would guarantee you nancy pelosi will say we can do more, too, and we will come back. I guarantee she would say that because i know her well. She would say if were going to get things back, well all come back and cancel the august work period. I know she would do that. But the key is the bottleneck in kentucky and the gentleman from kentucky needs to, as ive said many times, he needs to get off his [ bleep ] and get to work. I cannot tell you the level of frustration in this community. People that grabbed me yesterday after the vigil. I cant even count how many republicans grabbed me yesterday saying congressman, please get something done. This is going on too long. Do you see something getting done in on the state level . One thing that we heard from the police chief of dayton in the press conference just now is the fire power and magazine capacity that this shooter had on him was fundamentally problematic, to have that on the streets of any place in america. Hes talking about dayton, ohio. There are lots of calls yesterday of do something and you were on that stage when governor dewine was talking and folks started shouting do something. Short of the federal government doing something, what about ohio . Im encouraging the governor to do something. He needs to as well. And i think he would find bipartisan support here in ohio. I think the republicans are going too far on this. Its hitting home now all across the country. And when you talk about the magazine, the highpowered magazines where this kid had how many different opportunities if someone didnt shoot him down, how many people would have died. Those are simple steps that we should be able to take in the states if we cant get it done in washington, d. C. I know governor kasich tried to do it here in ohio and didnt get much support from the republicans because of the power of the National Rifle association. So i hope governor dewine takes the leadership role. Hes from southwest ohio, his lieutenant government is from southwest ohio, from the dayton area. So they have a vested interest. I heard people from the dayton Business Community say last night when i was having conversations that something needs to get done. So i think there could be bipartisan support on this again for the things that 70 or 80 of people in ohio and people across the country support. Weve got to heal, kate. Weve got to come together around some of these issues. It cant be polarizing all the time and the president and governor dewine need to show some leadership on this stuff. Congressman, thank you for being here. Really appreciate your time. Thanks, kate. Quick programming noet, cnn exclusive happening tonight. Well, its hard to reconcile right now because theres this divide between this ability to have Law Enforcement officers to protect the public from threats and those who can continue to be parts of these radical groups and do so with impunity. The one thing that was missing from the president s statement was a declaration that domestic terrorism would be a crime that the federal government could prosecute. Ill give you an example. Right now, people in the United States, if youre a white sfrem cyst or youre part of these hate groups, the federal government cannot prosecute you for that reason. You have to have a weapon, a bomb, Something Like that. Compare that to international terrorism. When i was an fbi agent i could prosecute someone for merely associating with isis. Thats how you get the threats off the street. This crime scene behind us in the walmart, those like him, if they knew possibly that this was a crime that could have been deterred, that associate yating with these types of groups or ideologies, if that would have sent you to jail, that might have caused people to say what was going on. Today we learned that the message board to which the alleged shooter posted that fourpage screed has been taken down. The cloud player, the site that hosted it dropped it. Now that we know the fbi is launching this nationwide search for potential threats, is that necessarily a good idea . Is that good news for investigators . The place they post this information is now gone. Two sides to this coin. So obviously you want to remove the platforms that allow this hate to continue to fester. Basically its a reinforcing process. Ive seen some of these messages. They continue to reinforce each other until the hate builds and you see these people actually acting with violence. Something happens that causes them to do that. If you remove that outlet, they dont have that community. Some of those people are in these enclosed environments and this is their ability to associate with others. You get rid of that, you remove that. But to your point if youre an investigator and you need the tools to pull up these investigative threats, if thats not there youre operating in the blind. Mexican authorities have suggested that maybe they will prosecute the alleged shooter here because he target, according to this manifesto as its called, immigrants, mexican citizens, what would be the cooperation between the fbi and federal mexican authorities . The fbi works very closely with mexican authorities. I think this is largely symbolic and perhaps their ability to send a deterrent symbol themselves. This is texas. I presume he will be charged here and will face the Death Penalty. No Death Penalty in mexico, so a question of where youd want to prosecute it. Josh campbell, always good to have you. Thanks. Victor, thank you so much. Well return to victor throughout the hour. Thank you so much for being there on the ground. So as folks are searching for answers, chief among them of course is what would drive someone to commit such atrocities as we saw over the weekend. We are also learning more about the lives that were taken, the people that should get the most of our focus right now. Lets remember them. Starting in dayton, lois oglesby who was a mother of two, including a newborn. Saeed saleh, derrick fudge, logan turner, thomas mcnichols, a father of four young children, ages 2 to 8 years old. Beatrice warrencurtis, monica brickhouse, Nicholas Cumer who was working on a masters degree in exercise physiology from st. Francis university, and megan betts, the gunmans sister. We wont forget those names. In el paso, so many families torn apart by the mass shooting there as well. So many names to even begin to remember. Jordan and andre anchondo. Parents of two children, including a 2monthold son, paul, who they died protecting in that walmart. From what we understand, baby paul has recovered from the crime scene with his mother on top of him and we got word that andre had jumped in front of his wife to protect his wife and son throughout the whole circumstance. So very devastating. Unbelievable. Leo campos and mary bell hernandez, they dropped their dog off at a groomer before heading to walmart to do some shopping. Also killed 86yearold angie. Arturo benvides, who was in the checkout line when she was shot. 7 of the 21 killed in el paso were mexican citizens, theyre sara esther regalado, adaufl owe hernandez, more va garcia, elsa mendoza de la mora, gloria irma marquez, maria eugenia, rothe and Ivan Filiberto manzano. Please remember those names today. You wouldnt accept an incomplete job from any one else. Why accept it from your allergy pills . Flonase relieves your worst symptoms including nasal congestion, which most pills dont. Flonase helps block 6 key inflammatory substances. Most pills only block one. Flonase. Our mission is to provide complete, balanced nutrition for strength and energy whoohoo greattasting ensure. With nine grams of protein and twentysix vitamins and minerals. Ensure, for strength and energy. Its become a familiar and haunting question at every mass shooting. Will this time be different . That question the country is now asking once again, following two horrific tragedies this weekend. And this morning a growing list of lawmakers and 2020 Democratic Candidates are pleading with and demanding quite frankly that Congress Take action. Listen. Mitch mcconnell should call the senate back in today and we should pass these measures. I agree with senator schumer, our leader in the senate, that we need to bring everyone back and that senator mcconnell should call the senate back to pass the house gun safety bill that has passed the house of representatives. The overwhelming majority of the american people, gun owners and nongun owners want common sense gun safety legislation. So what i have asked Mitch Mcconnell, republican leader of the senate, bring us back to washington. End the recess right now and let us sit down and work on the kind of legislation that we need. Here with me now is shannon watts, the founder of moms demand action, a Grass Roots Organization that was founded in the days and the aftermath of the sandy hook massacre. Shann shannon, thank you for being here. You were just with me here in may. We were talking about moms can get it done and demanding action and talking about the roots of your organization and what progress you think is being made. Now we have 30 People Killed, two shootings across two cities in the span of 13 hours and so many people injured. The president speaking out about it this morning, tweeting about it this morning. When the question continues to be every time is this time different, how do you answer that question this time . What do you think . Look, every horrific shooting tragedy in this country makes americans realize that this is a Public Health crisis and they have to act. Makes them get off the sidelines. Our organization tripled in size after the horrific tragedy in parkland, florida. After sandy hook we started our organization. So every time Something Like this happens, america does act. I dont believe were numb. There isnt a parent in this country who isnt afraid that their child will be next. I remember you telling me that everyone you speak with from your view, that everyone is waiting for this like Cathartic Movement to happen in congress, and that you are still optimistic that change is coming. Where do you find your optimism here, when you see what happened this weekend, you hear the president s remarks, you hear the anger from left and were not really hearing much from right to be honest because they have not really coming on. Republican lawmakers are pretty much refusing to come on cnn to discuss. But where do you find where do you find where do you find the optimism . First of all, we are now larger than the nra. We have hundreds of thousands of volunteers like me, 6 million supporters. In the midterm elections we outspent and outmaneuvered the nra. We flipped seven state legislatures and elected 1,000 gun sense candidates to congress. We go into 2020 elections with the nra weaker than they have ever been, were stronger than weve ever been but we do need the senate to come back right now to pass background checks and redflag laws that we know save lives in the states. They need to do their jobs. And thats where youve told me you find optimism. Yes. Is in the states. Even put congress aside. You have seen real action there. There is pressure on ohio to do something. Ohio an texas need to act. Ohio will go back into legislative session in september. But senators, if you text the word checks to 64433, we will patch you in and you can call your senator and say that you demand action. Focus on dayton for a second. The shooter was brought down in 30 seconds from the first time he shot to when they took him down. In that amount of time the police chief just said that he had the possibility, the maximum potential of 250 rounds in his on him. 30 seconds he was able to kill nine people. Where are you in your fight on Something Like that . Well, i mean obviously, you know, the police were outgunned and outmanned. When someone who has easy access to an arsenal and ammunition, including semiautomatic rifles and tactical gear, a good guy with a gun will not stop them. Only a lawmaker that will pass legislation will stop them. Do you look to the legislature at this point . Do you take note of what the president said this morning on what he would like to see done . There was no mention in his remarks about any kind of gun safety measure other than he talked about redflag laws, tic toughening Mental Health laws, video games. Those are nra talking points. We know this isnt about video games, mental illness, this is about easy access to gun. If the president is serious, he will pick up the phone and call senator Mitch Mcconnell right now and demand that they pass background checks, redflag laws and the legislation thats passed the house. These laws are working in the states. We need them at the federal level. Even the darkest of times, you find optimism. If every american uses their voice and their votes, this will end. Thank you so much. So when something happens like this so horrific, it is understandable to feel helpless. I mean it all the time when i say it, i feel helpless. I talked to shannon about her optimism and where she finds it because i feel helpless as well.
