Shoutout as well. Got to take care of your governors. He did do a good job. He did. He did a good job on climate. He did a good job on executive experience. I thought jay inslee was the question, i cant remember which asked it is, on the stage with donald trump. Donald trump was on a stage in 2015 16 with 15 other Top Republican candidates. And, you know, that i mean it was worse than that was just ten. There were 15 or 16 people on that stage. Yeah, but he was and he wiped the stage with people. He was the bully, though. He was calling people names. Okay. Hes not going to get any nicer on this. None of these people are going to mimic that behavior because when republicans mimic that behavior, if you recall, when marco rubio did it, it didnt do them any good. Right. I dont know how going toetotoe, yeah, hes a bully. Hes going to call them names. Whatever. We all know the games. Can any of them actually respond. I mean, the person who probably could go the best at donald trump, if you look at the entire two nights, is Elizabeth Warren. Who is a good debater. So far. Has some passion. Has some policy for the country. Kamala, the first debate could have taken on donald trump 100 , too. Let me just add something. The thing is that what we need a fighter, need a problem solver, we need a visionary. We have vans about to announce his candidacy. But think about it. Listen, you can point to some fighters, you up can point to some visionaries. The only person who is all three is Elizabeth Warren. Right. Thats got to be the takeaway, whether you like it or not. After two nights. No, no, whether you like it or not, shes very shes proved herself to be a great, great debater. Shes run a great campaign. There are people who have philosophical differences with her and theyre hoping that biden will represent that choice. And the question is not how he will stand up on a stage with donald trump. Thats a next level question. The question is how will he stand up on a stage with Elizabeth Warren and will he carry that banner but its also in a way that moderate democrats hope he will. I think its also easy to be too hard on the joe biden or Kamala Harris. Right. As the frontrunners on that stage tonight. I mean, it is very early in this race. Sure. Totally. Obama sure. Were also invested in it. This is such early days. Candidates get better. Yeah. Kamala listen, one thing i know about Kamala Harris, ive known Kamala Harris for 20 years. Just like obama he struggled in a couple of those first debates and he got better and better. Kamala harris will review those tapes and she will come back. Anybody who thinks you just saw the best of Kamala Harris, wait until next debate. When we have a stage that is single digit in candidates, it is a completely different ball game. Everybody is going to be able to tell their story a little bit more. Theyre going to be able to draw contrasts. Its not going to feel like a pinata with 30 kids with sticks. Heres what Kamala Harris and biden saw tonight. In this process for running for president , the better you do, the better you have to do. Every stage of the way, if you are if youre moving up, youre going to get greater scrutiny. Youre going to get more interrogation in these debates. Youre going to get more pressure and you have to be able to deal with it as it comes. And so that will be something to watch as this thing ratchets up. Warren has not shown shes shown great tenacity in terms of dealing with the pressures. She was written off early. Shes now way back in the mix. And we saw her last night. These other candidates if theyre going to compete are going to have to raise their game. Well, and also shouldnt biden be better right now . I mean, hes been a politician no, not necessarily. Since the 1970s. Hes been Vice President. Hes run for president twice. We compare him to obama. Obama was, like, what 46 years old . Youre so stuck in the past. I mean david remembers it not necessarily. When youve been Vice President or youve been president , youre not used to people coming and attacking you. But isnt that his argument, that hes really great and serious. But not as a debater necessarily. Hes been a good debater in the past but hes never been a frontrunner. Right. When youre a frontrunner thats right. As he discovered tonight, everybodys going after you. I said it the other day, the mario cuomo quote, only in cowboy movies do people shoot backwards. Everybody shoots at the guy in front. Hes the guy in front. Hes going to have warren and sanders on the same stage with him, and then hes going to be attacked by both of those people who who believe truly in what they are talking about. And different attacks than the attacks tonight. Actually, lets look at some of those attacks. We have a bit of a montage. Lets take a look. I asked the Vice President pointblank did he use his power to stop those deportations, he went right around the question. Mr. Vice president , you want to be president of the United States. You need to be able to answer the tough questions. Mr. Vice president , you cant have it both ways. You invoke president obama more than anybody in this campaign. You cant do it when its convenient and then dodge it when its not. Your plan by contrast leaves out almost 10 million americans. So i think that you should really think about what youre saying. Joe biden told wealthy donors that nothing fundamentally would change if he were president. If you want to compare records and, frankly, im shocked that you do, i am happy to do that. First of all, mr. Vice president , it looks like one of us has learned the lessons of the past and one of us hasnt. There is a saying in my community, youre dipping into the koolaid and you dont even know the flavor. I liked the last one is pretty just imagine this. Anderson, so there are eight more debates, right . And by the time you get to the general election, i mean, you will have heard every single attack. Granted, its coming from largely the left, but, you know, you can imagine that you have lots of practice. Donald trump is not getting debate practice right now. Hes going to show up at a general election debate, you know, i would argue donald trump has plenty of practice attacking people and he will continue attack people right up through the debate. Right. To the point johns about to make, hed never done this before. Hed never done this before. Thats true. And he proved himself pretty good at it. Number one, hes kind of practicing every day. He does it with his fingers on twitter. He practices every day. To what we played there. In the Health Care Exchange with senator harris, i think the former Vice President held his ground. Yes. He tried to make the point for his Health Care Plan. Have a public option buyin, dont have this giant disruptive to your point about senator harris, she should have learned this from her prosecution of him in the first debate, she still refuses as senator sanders and warren had the courage to do last night to look the camera in the eye and say, yes, yes, my Health Care Plan takes away. If you get it from your employer, you lose it. She doesnt want to say that. She does have private insurance. This Medicare Advantage plan, but if you get it from your employer and you have different options, her plan takes it away and she doesnt want to say that. She wants to find some other way to sort of talk around it. Her Campaign Motto is speak truth. Well, the truth is her plan takes that away and she doesnt want to talk about it. Back to the Vice President. Some of those exchanges he was okay. To davids point, bidens strength here is if he is to convince democrats you want me to go up against donald trump because i will defend the obama record and also get the scrappy kid from scranton, the blue collar guys. Macomb county, michigan will come back to me. He doesnt get back to the narrative. Its a tactical back and forth. Watch warren last night. When they same apt ht her, she. She makes her point and get it is back to why are we here. He was muddying it up. Again, he came down to their level. I found to fascinating that it seems like the democrats when theyre in a corner they have adopted a new its basic lir their republican version of thats fake news and thats is thats a republican talking point. Thats right. Which in some cases, yeah, those are republican talking points. In some cases theyre actual facts. Its a democratic voter talking point. Right. And, by the way, even if it is a republican talking point, youre going to be debating a republican and if you cant answer one thing i wanted to note about those clips. We talk about cory booker. You know, i disagree with you slightly, van. I know democrats want someone who is Strong Enough to go up against donald trump, but the question is how you go up against donald trump. And i think the answer is probably jiujitsu. You turn his negative energy against him. What you saw there was booker. He never seemed like he was on the attack. Yeah. He was responding the happy warrior. Responding in stride. Most of the time he was summoning democrats to larger themes. And i think he more than anyone was carrying a narrative tonight that has real potential for democrats. Doesnt mean hes going to be the nominee. We expected booker to go negative because he had been negative for the last week or two about joe biden. And he had been on the attack. And what he did was when he got to the stage it was sort of like, well, ive said all of that and im not going to do that anymore. Im going to let Kamala Harris attack him on the bussing and the dealing with segregationists, which she did. So he benefitted himself cory booker and Elizabeth Warren both seem to get excited when they get challenged, and that is a really, really strong suit for somebody who is going to take on donald trump. Because theyre going to get challenged a whole lot. Both of them seem to feed off it. One thing we keep saying about donald trump, when we get into the general election, folks, dont forget it is this man who has destroyed health care in this country. Hes taken away the individual mandate. Hes brought confusion to the insurance market. Prices have gone up all over the country. Policies in virginia have gone up 62 . We will have a lot to hit donald trump on. Thats the speech you would have given if you were a candidate. Nobody did it tonight, though. They should. Dont forget why were in this mess. The other thing id say on health care. We got to figure out where we are by the time we get to the general. It was mindnumbing tonight. And i follow this. But for most americans, they tuned out. You know im sorry. One person that we havent talked about who was very, very deft all night was castro. Yeah. I dont want to lose that. Part of what you had with him he was a lot tonight the way mayor pete was last night. But better. But better. He was able to kind of seem pragmatic, get the lines in, tells story and escape unscathed. And i think that his ability to i think he will be back. I think castro, i think he bought himself a new lifeline. I also think that unrecognized the social movements in this party had a victory tonight. Yes, the did. Black lives mater had a victory tonight. Were talking about criminal justice. The me too movement had a victory. Gillibrand i think was incredible tonight prosecuting the case and making the argument for women being at the center, mops being at the center. In a way i thought that was very, very appealing. Occupy wall street. Oh, those kids are crazy. The environmental movement. The environmental movement. You have a party that has been remade from the bottom by social movements. I want to give credit to people out there who have been clicktavists. This party is responding to social moments in a beautiful way. On the health care issue, terry, in addition to what you said. Gloria said when we were watching the debate virtually no mention of preexisting conditions. Right. That was the thing that democrats ran on yeah. In the last fall, and thats one of the thats the main reason why many of these democrats right. This was the key vulnerability for republicans and you didnt hear anybody hammering it tonight. You have a president of the United States who is suing right now. In court right now. To end those protections. And that was a missed opportunity. Dont forget what president obama said. The entire battle for the aca, if you like your Health Care Plan, you get to keep it. Now you dont. Well, thats going to be the issue. We got to thats what you were saying. You, democrats, have to figure out a way to simplify this again. Right. Because everybodys confused. Okay. Medicare for all f. What does that mean . Joe biden, well, if they tell you you get to keep it for the next ten years. Then what . People dont want to hear that. One other thing, where was the middle class in this debate . Did you hear anyone talk about defending the middle class. Lets quickly go to chris cuomo for more perspective on what occurred tonight. Chris . Hey, how are you doing, bud . Thanks. Two quality people with me. Cnn political director David Chalian and usa columnist and cnn political analyst kirsten powers. Great to have you both. Again, were having our own conversation while theyre having their conversation. Thats what the nations doing. So lets pull the curtain back a little bit. You study the numbers. You study the metrics. You know who has to do what and when. Tonight was the when. What did you see on that stage tonight in terms of who did what they needed to do. Well, joe biden first and foremost did what he needed to do, which was survive, right . That was the biggest thing he had to prove tonight. He knew he was going to take all the incoming and he had to show he could take it. I think he certainly did that. That is not the same thing saying joe biden won the debate tonight, joe biden secured his path to the nomination tonight. I still think hes going to have to trudge through this process. There is no doubt about that. But what he did was show up in a way that showed democratic voters he can take it, stand there, dish some back and survive this kind of battle. That was after the miami lackluster performance, that was Mission Critical for him and he did that. I dont know how much he propelled his candidacy as much as kept his ability to stay in this race in the positions. If you had to bet me a bagel, whose number would pop after tonight . Well, if i had to bet you a bagel. I try not to bet, especially the future. Technically its the past. It already happened. So feel better about it. Cory booker i would bet raises more money in the next 24 hours than in any other 24hour period of his campaign. Ill take it. I think he had a really successful night. Ill take it. Lets offer some different takes, kirsten, you and i. Lets start with booker. You say he had a good night. We heard it on the other set as well. Ill take the other side because his big moment i think he was the happy warrior. Thats good for him. Where i disagree, i dont think he was completely honest in his answer with joe biden. The whole koolaid, he didnt know the flavor either. The aclu came after him while he was mayor because his police force was being unjust. Three years into it they settled the case. Thats when he came up with the recommendations that they liked. So it wasnt just that they liked his job. They sued him for the job he was doing. Does it matter . You know, thats the case that joe biden should have made, right . Because that didnt happen on the stage. So he was spinning, i would say. You call it lying. I call it spinning. Massaging. I would say he wasnt completely honest. He was massaging the facts in his favor. Joe biden went in and made an attack. He should have been able to make that argument. I think for people who are watching, cory won that exchanges. And i thanksgiving that cory came across not just that he was pushing back but doing it in a very happy warrior way. Yes. Did he win as soon as biden attacked him to axs point about my father, only in the movies did the cowboys shoot backwards. Biden shouldnt have gone after him on a granular level. Biden shouldnt have gone after him. He was basically counterattacking because corys been criticizing him, right . But thats not really an answer. Biden has a pretty easy answer to what hes being accused of in terms of the things that have happened in the past with the crime bill. This is not something that just joe biden came up with. This is something that people in the cbc supported. The congressional black caucus. Yes. Look, it ended up being a very terrible decision, but a lot of people made a terrible decision and he should just say that. It was a mistake. A lot of people we were wrong. We were trying to do the right thing. We made a mistake. Instead he goes on the attack against cory and doesnt have all the facts to hold him accountable the way that you could have. Thats why they dont come on the show. He is going to come on with eastern. The good thing is we dont necessarily agree with all the assessments on the other said. It will be a robust conversation. Lets take a break right now. When we come back, Anderson Cooper is with senator cory booker. People are talking a lot about him tonight. Lets see how he does in the interview next. Soriatic arthrit, Little Things can be a big deal. Thats why theres otezla. Otezla is not an injection or a cream. Its a pill that treats differently. Thats when patients are hit with medical bills they thought would be covered by insurance. But what congress is considering would cut money that vulnerabe patients rely on the most. That means seniors, children, and americans relying on medicaid would be hurt. Its already too hard for people to get basic medical care with hospitals closing and a shortage of er doctors. Tell congress we can end surprise billing without shredding the safety net. Paid for by physicians for fair coverage. Driven each day to pursue bioplifechanging cures. Ers. In a country built on fostering innovation. Here, they find breakthroughs. Like a way to fight cancer by arming a patients own tcells. And a new therapy that gives the blind a working gene so they can see again. Because its not just about the next breakthrough. Its all the ones after that. And welcome back to the second night of the democratic debates here in detroit. Joe lewis would certainly have approved of some of the fighting going on on the stage, some of the punches that were thrown. Im joined now by senator cory booker. Senator booker, thank you for being with us. Thank you, anderson. Thanks for having me. How did you feel about your plan going in and how things ended up . Well, i feel pretty good. One of the big points i was trying to drive i was disappointed last night. I think the happiest people were republican strategists showing they could divide our country against ourselves. What we agreed on and the urgency now. Not just to talk about our differences because they matter, but talk about how we can unite the whole party so that we can win in 2020. It didnt seem like a lot of happiness on the stage, and a number of people have already commented that you sort of seemed like a happy warrior in some of the exchanges that you had. Even in the way you when you were going in a back and forth with Vice President biden, you still had sort of a smile on your face and you seemed kind of to do it in a way that didnt come off, i dont know, it just came off in an interesting way. Well, first of all, i have a tremendous amount of respect for joe biden. His service, his time as the Vice President , and we all should have a reverence for that. There are differences, clearly, in our criminal justice records. And i felt it important on an issue that ive worked on pretty much all my life, i wanted to make sure that a lot of the hurt that i feel that people are in jail right now for life because of a three strikes youre out laws. That we have marijuana laws in this country that deeply discriminate against lowincome and black and brown people. And his plan didnt really allow for really aggressively dealing with those issues. So i think the differences matter, but i really wanted to do them in a way that showed respect. I actually want to play that one of those exchanges that we were just discussing. The bills that the president excuse me, the future president here that the senators talking about are bills that were passed years ago and they were passed overwhelmingly. Since 2007 i, for example, tried to get the crack powder cocaine totally disparity totally eliminated. In 2007, you became mayor and you had a Police Department that was you went out and you hired Rudy Giulianis guy and engaged in stop and frisk. You had 75 of those stops were viewed as illegal. You found yourself in a situation where three times as many africanamerican kids were caught up in that chain, and caught up. The Justice Department came after you for saying you were engaging in behavior that was inappropriate and then, in fact, nothing happened, the entire time you were mayor. Senator booker, do you want to respond . Well, first of all, im grateful he endorsed my presidency already, but ill tell you this, its no secret that i inherited a criminal a Police Department with massive problems and decadeslong challenges, but the head of the aclu has already said the head of the new jersey aclu that i put Forth National standardsetting accountability. Mr. Vice president , i didnt interrupt you. Please show me that respect, sir. We have a system right now thats broken, and if you want to compare records and, frankly, im shocked that you do, i am happy to do that, because all of the problems that he is talking about that he created, i actually led the bill that got passed into law that reverses the damage that your bills that you were, frankly, to correct you, mr. Vice president , you were bragging calling it the biden crime bill up until 2015. Thank you, senator. You looked like you expected that exchange. Yeah, well, his campaign telegraphed a lot of attacks. And literally we were having conversations with the aclu that was there with us, and a pretty significant partner with us in trying to deal with the decadeslong problems in the newark Police Department. They had sued you, though. The aclu had sued you. Absolutely. You know why . Because when we came in we announced this was an issue we were going to deal with it. The aclus problem wasnt that we didnt share a goal. They didnt think we were moving fast enough. You know what . They were right. So we came together and ended up partnering to create what i discussed there, which im really proud of which is national, national standardsetting transparency measures that we took on. The reforms we did in the newark Police Department, the efforts starting to get a Police Civilian review board, there was so much good stuff we did. Do you stand by everything you did with the Police Department in newark . I not only stand by i wish we moved faster, but we inherited a very bad situation during a very difficult time. A national recession. Rising crime. We actually started out by announcing we were going to take on this issue of dealing with the Police Accountability issues, and so im very proud of the progress we made. And that doesnt include we reformed the court system. The first, you know, drug court in new jersey, the first youth court in new jersey, veterans court. We had created new jerseys first ever office, Municipal Office of reentry to deal with people coming home. We took on the school to prison pipeline. As van and i have talked about since we were in law school. Black kids for the same infractions as white kids get out of school suspensions, which means they have higher rates related to crime. We have the most comprehensive criminal Justice Reform and other cities came to learn from what we were doing. I went to the is in et and actually passed the bill. The absurdity of what he was saying. Wild swings. I know thats not coming from the Vice President. Its coming from people who filled his head with things to deflect from me talking about his record. I know a bunch of people on the panel have questions. I want to go through the timeline here because i think, forgive me, youre painting a slightly overly rosy picture how it played out. You become mayor in 2006. In 2010, the aclu files a 96page complaint against the newark Police Department. Youve been mayor for four years. Three years later, youre right, they do commend you after after an investigation, after the Justice Department gets involved, but at the beginning it was more contentious, was it not . I know you say you inherited a corrupt Police Department. I take you at your word. At this point, youre mayor for four years. The aclu is not coming to you saying hey, buddy, theyre saying we have a problem, mr. Mayor. Lets go through the timeline. I take it one at a time. I mean no disrespect to former leaders of my city. Every leader going back to the 1950s was indicted and convicted of things. We were taking over a city with a massive reform agenda in the middle of a national recession. We did announce right away that we were making reforms with the aclu at the table. Our difference was the speed at which we moved. So when they first brought up this issue, hey, were going to file this complaint federally because we think we need more transparency. I was ticked off. When i sat down with the leader of the Justice Department and said, cory, this is free consulting for you to get to the same ends, we leaned into it. We didnt wait until the report came out. We started working with the Justice Department right away making changes years before the report would even come out. This was a partnership from the beginning. We had a disagreement on tactics and speed, but actually im really proud of the achievements we made while we were and again let me just jump in for one more. He also brought up the stop and frisk issue. His argument is you were getting complaints from the community so you told the Police Department be more aggressive. You were responding to complaints from the community. He says thats what he did in the clinton crime bill days, you know, mayors were complaining, Public Housing people were complaining, you had a gun crisis, you had a crack crisis, they were doing what they asked to do, in hindsight they overshot. Is that apples to apples . That is not apples to apples. We didnt start stop and frisk in newark. Its just not true. Again, these are things that have no substantiation in fact whatsoever. To create a equivalency, between his words, every crime bill, major and minor since the 1970s through all the way to the 1990s, literally to 2015 he was calling this the biden crime bill. To make a false equivalency of a mass incarceration from 1980 now going up 500 . Were talking millions of individuals and families affected. To create some kind of equivalency between what was going on in newark and reforms were trying to make, and so this, to me, is why i used very strong words. This is somebody that by his own admission was designing the system of mass incarceration that, frankly, when i first met van in law school, these are the kinds of things we were talking about. Three strikes youre out. Incentivizing the buildings of prisons. A new prison every ten days from the time i was in law school until the time i was being mayor. Built in our nation to incarcerate people in massive amounts. Now this is the thing, because were talking about the past. Right now in america, there are thousands and thousands of people sitting in jail because of those laws that were passed then. Theyre sitting in jail now and we dont seem to have as a party the kind of urgency that we should be putting forward. Thats why mine is the boldest plan to liberate people from prison who just dont belong there. Do you think the Vice President gets it . Gets what your critique is of what his past actions are . This is what i dont understand is why not take full responsibility . He did it with the war on iraq. Said i was wrong then. But he is not speaking and thats what makes me question him. Well, what i wish he came out and just say plainly, these were the things that were wrong, from three strikes youre out, from Incentivizing States not to stop the school to prison pipeline, not to deal with more resources for everything from addiction to Mental Health issues, they incentiveized states to change their laws that drove mass incarceration. Just speak to what happened so that black communities like mine that were devastated by things like this can actually say, okay, you get it. But hes not doing that. In fact, the first time in this campaign that i called him out for something, his response wasnt to say im sorry, his response to do what hes doing now. He shifted blames and said, no, cory should apologize to me. Anderson, the only thing im saying is i love and respect joe biden, but you cant talk about the future until you atone for the past and the present. And your plan, this is what ticked me off last week, i was waiting for this plan coming out a week before the debate. When i saw the plan, it was simply not enough. As i said in the debate, you cannot light a house on fire and then come out with a plan for putting out the fires. What he put out was just not enough. Probably time for one more question. Van, do you have anything . Well, a couple of things. One is i i actually liked his plan better than you did. He just didnt seem to know what it was when he was on stage with you. I think he actually missed some opportunities to come back at you. So a couple of things i would say. Number one, you were dealing with two problems and not one when you became the mayor of newark. One was you had a corrupt Police Department. You also had a murder epidemic. And you were a young mayor we knew each other then. Trying to deal with two problems and not one. I do think that there were people who felt at the time at the Community Level that you were being, quote, unquote, tough on crime through a Police Department that you hadnt cleaned up yet. How do you respond to those people now . Because i do think that what mr. King is saying is didnt you in some ways make same kind of mistake that biden did . I mean, maybe, you know, he did it huge and you did it a little, but how do you respond to those kinds of questions . I just talk to my record. Van, first of all, you know i still live in that community. Im the only person in the United States senate that lives in a black and brown Minority Community below the poverty line. These are my neighbors, my friends. Im giving you an opportunity to respond to it. We didnt wait. We found out stunning data that the majority of the murder victims were people who had been incarcerated before. An average of about ten times. So the first thing we said we got to stop locking people up over and over again. When someone comes home in our city, were going to provide jobs, were going to provide opportunity. We got to stop people from getting caught up in the system in the first place. We created job programs, again, became models in our state. Turning entire city blocks into urban farms to give people work. You know these are reforms we talked about in law school that we actually implemented right off the jump when i was mayor. Who was better in law school . He was. That is not true. He was a legend in our law school. Cory booker, appreciate it. Coming up next, senator Kamala Harris joins us. Well be right back. Some people see it that way between senator Kamala Harris and Vice President joe biden given what happened in the last debate. Senator harris joins us now. How do you feel it went on that stage . I felt good about it. It was fast. It feels fast on stage. It feels fast when youre there. Im sure for the viewer it went slowly. I feel good. There is so much to discuss and not enough time to cover the issues. I would like to have had a much longer conversation about the environment. I would love to have a much longer conversation about the economy. You know, there are so many issues yeah. That i think the American People actually want to know where we stand and that were thinking about them. From the moment the Vice President came out on stage, i think the first thing he said to you, its gotten a lot of pick up and a lot of people talking about it online. I believe the words were, go easy on me, kid. Im wondering how you interpreted that. Thats what he wanted me to do. I didnt really think much about it, to be honest with you. The kid. Thats what was that an issue for you at all . No. No. The did you the but ill tell you why. Because were both on that stage running for president. So im pretty clear about who i am. Nobodys going to define me on that stage. Right. Yeah. In terms of health care, youve just put out your plan yep. In past debates people have raised questions about where you were on whether or not private insurance should be taken away from people. Yeah. Your plan is essentially kind of a medicare for all except people can keep their plans if they like them for the first ten years. Is that correct . Essentially. There is a tenyear phase in, but what ive done is that, you know, i have to tell you, anderson, ive been listening to people and i said from the first day that i announced my candidacy that i especially at this phase of the campaign will listen as much as i talk. Ive been listening to people. And they want to know that they have an option to keep a private plan. And i respect that. You know, listen, i knew i was going to take hits for it. I knew it. But id much prefer to be relevant at the end of this process than to stick to something that i dont believe is the best option and the best way to go for the vast majority of americans. Do you think democrats who are holding on to medicare for all take away private insurance from everyone, is that a politically is that a suicidal political move for the Democratic Party . I mean, ill leave that to the pundits, but i no what people have told me. Ive spent a lot of time in iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina and nevada. People want to know that they have an ability to have an option that is not only the option of Government Sponsored Health Care but also that there is a private option. So heres what i propose to do. Is to allow the private Insurance Companies to basically comply with the requirements im putting in place for who will be part of our medicare system. So, for example, its they can no longer be about jacking up the prices around deductibles and copays. It will be the case that regardless of whether you have a private medicare plan or a public medicare plan that when you walk into that Doctors Office youre not going to have to lay down a credit card, you lay down your medicare card. But in your plan eventually everyone could be taken off a private the private plan that their Company Currently has . Yes. But let me its important that i explain that because i think there was really a misinterpretation of that on the debate stage tonight. Employers right now offer their employees a private plan. I am separating the employer from your health care. So you have the option of signing up for a private plan under medicare, but its not going to be through your employer. So if you leave your job you can take thats exactly the point. I cant tell the number of people that i have met of all ages who say they feel stuck in the job they have because they need that Health Care Plan. That should not be the case in america, especially when we talk about over the next 15 years up to 40 of the jobs that currently exist will no longer exist. We have to adapt to the changing times, which includes that a lot of people are changing their employer. On a much more frequent basis than used to be the case. Used to be the case you come out of school, high school or college, you go work one place and thats where you work until you retire. That is no longer the case in america. No one should have to worry about losing their job or changing their job because they may not have health care once they make that decision. In terms of the discussion you had with Vice President biden in the last debate, it came back up. He has not in any way apologized or backtracked from what he says his position was back then. Do you think he should . Well, we have a disagreement and thats it. I mean, we have a disagreement. I, you know, lets revisit the issue because hes not portraying it in i mean, he would deny that he is pushing a states rights argument when, in fact, it seems to me thats what it sounds like hes supporting. Thats certainly what it sounded like on the debate stage last time. I was actually surprised that he said it that way. Its one thing for him to have some justification for what he did, but for him to say this is essentially a states rights issue and the federal government shouldnt intervene i find to be, frankly, outrageous. Weve needed the federal government to intervene on civil rights issues, be it on issues that relate to race, issues that, you know, voting rights, civil rights act, the equality act that i hope to pass. All of that is because the federal government needs to act on civil rights issues. The National Guard had to be called in. Yeah, of course. Of course. So we have a guess agreement he and i. Some of the toughest critiques or attacks came from Tulsi Gabbard. Just for our viewers who havent seen it, i just want to play some of that and have you respond. Okay. I want to bring the conversation back to the broken criminal Justice System. That is disproportionately negatively impacting black and brown people all across this country today. Now, senator harris says shes proud of her record as a prosecutor and that shell be a prosecutor president , but im deeply concerned about this record. There are too many examples to cite, but she put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana. She blocked evidence she blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so. She kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of california. And she fought to keep taxes thank you, congresswoman. Cash bail systems in place that impact poor people in the worst kind of way. Thank you, congresswoman. Senator harris, your response . As the elected attorney general of california, i did the work of significantly reforming the criminal Justice System of a state of 40 million people, which became a National Model for the work that needs to be done. And i am proud of that work. And i am proud of making a decision not just to give fancy speeches or be in a legislative body and give speeches on the floor but actually doing the work of being in the position to use the power that i had to reform a system that is badly in need of reform. Did you did you expect that from Tulsi Gabbard . Had you had interaction about that in the past . And how do you think it went . Well, i mean, listen, i this is going to sound immodest, but im obviously a top tier candidate, and so i did expect that i would be on the stage and take hits tonight because there are a lot of people that are trying to make the stage for the next debate. For a lot of them its do or die. Especially when some people are at zero or 1 , whatever she might be at. So i did expect that i would take hits tonight. But, you know, listen, this coming from someone who has been an apologist for an individual, sau assad, who has murdered the people of his, you know, of his country like cockroaches. She who has embraced and been an apologist in ways for refusing to call him a war criminal. I can only take what she says in her opinion so seriously. So, you know, im prepared to move on. In terms of just being on that stage, the learning curve of it. You know, candidates get better and better and better through this gauntlet. Yeah. Its not a plenty gauntlet and it goes on for a long, long time. Yeah. Do you see yourself the way you were tonight much different than the way you were last debate and that debate the way you were, i dont know, two months ago . Do you feel youre a quickening . Do you feel a Comfort Level . Well, certainly there is nothing normal about this process and i dont know that there is much in the normal this feels totally normal to me. Right. Exactly. I only exist on tv, so exactly, right . Yes. People come up and hug you as if youre their brother. You are in a way. Virtual brother. So obviously there is nothing normal about the process. So there is a learning curve, theres no question. I have to tell you, i dont know what it says about my personality, but im really enjoying this process. Im enjoying being the thing i enjoy most is being out there. You know, the meetings that we take, the town halls, the interactions with people who show up on a sunday afternoon when they could be doing 1,000 other things, right . When they have priorities, they have responsibilities and they are there because they love our country, they are there because they are serious people and they want to listen. Theyre going to evaluate. They ask questions. They challenge you. And i am growing in the process. Do you i am. And i do feel very strongly, anderson. Let me just say, i fully intend to win this election, but for me the metric of our success will also be that at the end of this process we are relevant, and the only way i can ensure that is to make sure i am listening as much if not more than i all talking. If the Democratic Party goes ahead with the message medicare for all and its not your plan medicare for all, taking away ultimately Health Insurance from 100 million people. I know thats the criticism of that is that its a republican talking point, and it may be a republican talking point, but how do you answer i mean, if thats the push for the Democratic Party, is that a position you believe . Clearly its not something you believe in. Right. Is that i mean, its the question i asked before. Is that a death nail for the Democratic Party in this election. Is that something if the Democratic Party runs on taking away 100 million peoples Health Insurance, is that a winning issue . I mean, ill leave it to the pundits to predict or, you know, opine on. Why isnt it something you are embracing . Well, i i just feel that what my plan is just going to be the most relevant plan, and i will tell you the architect of the Affordable Care act, kathleen sebelius, has spoken about my plan as it being something that would be one of the closest to actually achieve medicare and health care for all people. Many experts have said that who have reviewed my plan. Im very proud of my plan because i do believe that it is going to be the most relevant and the most helpful to American Families. How did you finally, how did you find Vice President biden on that stage tonight in your discussions with him compared to the last time . Did you did you did you notice you were a more formidable opponent, the same . Did you have any sense of that . Well, the exchanges that come to mind that we had tonight where we have a difference of opinion are on the discussion we had previously. Right. The last debate. And health care. And i just simply disagree with it is not a plan that is going to Bring Health Care to all americans. By his plan and his the people on his team. By their own definition almost 10 million americans will not have health care under his plan. In 2019 on the heels of incredible work of barack obama that changed the dynamic completely, in 2019, what people are demanding a change to the Health Care System of america. That any democrat would be on the stage and not have plan to Bring Health Care to everybody. Its a very its a missed opportunity. And its wrong. Theres actually ways to achieve healthcare for all people. You can go toe to toe with trump . For sure. Absolutely. Ill tell you why. First of all, donald trump got elected making a whole lot of promises to people he didnt keep. He was going to come in and fight for working families and fight for farmers and autoworkers. As i said tonight, farmers in iowa are looking at bankruptcy and soybeans rotting in bins. We expect hundreds of thousands of autoworkers in michigan and other states will be out of wrk by the end of the year. He passed a tax bill that benefits the top 1 and the biggest corporations in america. Last year 60 of the biggest corporations paid no taxes. Families are struggling every day. In America Today over half of American Families cannot afford a 400 unexpected expense. If youre a minimum wage worker you cannot a one bedroom apartment. A 3 00 a. M. Agenda. What wakes people up at 3 00 in the morning. Well change the tax code. To give tax credits. Pay teachers their value. Pay women equally for equal work. And i can go on and on. Thats going to speak to American People. This president speaks to the lowest common denominator in terms of issues. He speaks to the issues that are about scaring children. He speaks to issues that are about saying for members of the United States congress who are serving counter to go back where you came from. Communities of color and says where they live is inhumane and no human should live there. He doesnt speak to the best of who we are and needs to leave office. He doesnt understand the strength of the american president. Is to use that microphone in a way thats about lifting people up not beating them down. I appreciate it. Well take a quick break. A book that youre ready to share with the world . Get published now, call for your free publisher kit today were coming up on midnight in detroit. After another big debate night. Im here with chris cuomo. Joined with secretary castro. Also certainly two kands dates getting buzz. Booker and harris. Who we just spoke with. What were your thoughts about tonight . Listening to your interviews, its not so easy to be tested. On the debate stage you pick your spot, and you look for things you planned out with the team. Its a little different when youre sitting with the seasoned Anderson Cooper and the other people there that were interviewing booker and you have to have your facts straight and know what youre doing. While both of them had moments tonight that will please the people following them so far. They have big vulnerabilities and shines like why you have to like at biden through a different lens. He had eight people coming at him. Its different. Its an important different look for people after the debate to see them with you. Who cares what i think. Ill bring in our political director. We were talking about that. The difference between being tested vs. Being the tester. Lets start with booker. He was struggling there with them a bit. King was on him. Ritely so. The facts are clear. Its apples to apples. The 94 crime bill was bigger than new jersey. He was there. He was there for years. The aclu had to sue. And asked for an investigation. He said they didnt. Washington post found him false. So its alyle different when you have to defend your record. The buoyant point is everybody past. In a position of power. Its interesting. Theres a parallel the way biden was handling the criticism in the 94 crime bill. He never wanted to apologize for it but offered lines like he attended an mlk event and said we didnt get everything right. Booker the line is the timing it could have been better. Instead of the full for both of them the full responsibility of how much authorship or ownership around that. Booker is asking for from biden he didnt give himself about this. Thats politics. Harris, she has a hard time defending her Health Care Plan. I dont understand how her plan is medicare for all. Help me. I cant. I cant and i was very confused watching the debate. It especially comparing to last night. Which was a meaty debate. Between two different groups of ideology people. Sanders and warren. Tonight we didnt have that as much. It wasnt clear what they were arguing about. The thing about harris i cannot wait to see her have that debate with sanders and warren. Theyll probably shred this proposal. Because it has a ten year time for basically for this to roll out. This means shell be out of office by the time it goes into effect. Its not anywhere near i think what a lot of democrats would feel is necessary that theres a crisis a health care crisis. This incremental approach is this what were looking for. Two people on the outside trying to work in. The higher up you are the more its as poise. The lower its about noise. We have gillibrand and gabbard. Gabbard went at harris. She went at her with some of what has been said about harriss own coworkers. In an oped. She didnt want to talk to hair directly. She went to biden. She didnt debate the aspects of her past either. Impact. Probably wise as ill tell you why. Because as harris just made clear in the interview with Anderson Cooper. She said im ready to move past that. That 1 person gabbard the question about her prosecutor go away. Shes been answering them from the day she got into the campaign. On the day she got in. Her first press conference. They were the first questions she took. She will have to continue to answer for that. Its probably one of the most common questions shes received throughout the campaign. Shell have to work to continue. For african americans. And with white liberals. They also have raised this sort of College Educated white liberal. Warren crowd. If you will. Also wants to hear Kamala Harris explain the prosecute days. She wont explain it to gabbard. Gillibrand. We were surprised to hear everybody say she did so great. She had moments. I felt her attack on biden had missed because it seemed to be an awkwardly attack. Like you believe he doesnt want women to work . They put it out again on twitter. Theyre raising a ton of money. Do we have it wrong . The attack seemed craven. It was unfair. The idea first of all 1981 . What did any of us think in 1981. Is that what were going back to. Whats important is what he thinks today. Does anyone believe joe biden doesnt believe women should work outside the home . The way she kept coming back at him. I need to know what you thichlt come on. We know what he thinks. He has a wife with a phd. Who works outside the home. We know the answer. To me, i felt like it was a swing and a miss. Sp he came back and said didnt i use to do stuff with you and you said i was great with women. We went to syracuse together. People will look at this and think there are problems with biden. This isnt fair. What about her fund raising. I dont know if its true. The best day in july. 75 of the donors are new. They havent had good fund raising. Best day is a whole metric. Most of which is fuelled by the money she had in the account she transferred over into her president ial account. And just yes, theyre clearly trying to make hay happen here. Because why, because we know getting on september and october debate stage the dnc doubled the threshold, gillibrand is not there yet. 130,000. Trying to hit 2 and have life to live on. Thats not where they are. The ultimate metric has to be if youre looking at the stage, do you see the one . Do you see the one for your party . Do you believe anybody after the two days is saying that any of them other than warren are the one . Am i getting smacked online by biden people saying he was there and got attacked by nine people. People think bernie is the one. He has a strong following. People think biden is the one. His support is soft. People are looking at him. Sanders support is hard. I think for biden people are looking at him and thinking hes the one because he can probably beat trump. I dont think theyre locked into him. David puts this in our head. Why biden is seen as formidable against a warren. You have to give her her due. She says if you come at me youll get one back. Maybe two. Bidens numbers, hes hell step for step with her with liberals. Now lets move down the spectrum. Into independent. Moderate. Republicans. What do you see in the numbers . Joe biden core of support inside the democratic nominating lek tort. Moderate, independent. Senior citizens. African americans. Otherwise known as the base of the Democratic Party lek tort. Right now warren is getting her biggest support from white College Educated liberals and thats why shes taking some of the bernie. The reason bernie support is strong. That actually is from some of the more nonCollege Educated folks. We have seen his support go down from clinton four years ago. Where he is now, is that some of the white College Educated liberal crowd, warren has taken that vote away from sanders. That is his biggest challenge. They are in the same lane. Someone else we were like the comportment is there. Strong points here. Hes making a message for himself. Castro. The former hud secretary. Joined with Anderson Cooper right now. Thanks very much. Were here with secretary castro. Great to be with you. How did it feel on the stage . Felt great. A month ago i got on the radar. Folks were wondering could i go in again and hold my own. Toe to toe. You took on orourke. And many feel you did well. I think i did well tonight. People know where i stand. The positive strong vision i have for the country future. I was glad in this debate we talked about immigration and health care. And a number of other issues. There was an exchange with Vice President biden about immigration. People are talking about it. Ill play that for viewers. If you cross the border illegally you should be able to be sent back. Its a crime. Its a crime and its not one that thank you Vice President. Secretary castro. First of all. It looks like one of us learned the lessons of the past and one hasnt. Let me begin by telling you answering that question. My immigration plan would fix the broken Legal Immigration system. Because we have a problem with that. Secondly the only way well guarantee the family separations dont happen in the future is that we need to repeal the law. We need politicians that have guts on this issue. Thank you. Vice president , your response. I have guts enough to say the plan doesnt make sense. Heres the deal. The fact of the matter is when people cross the border illegally. It is illegal to do it unless their seeking asylum. People should have to get in line. Thats the problem. The only reason this particular part of the law is being abused is because of donald trump. We should defeat trump. And end this practice. Your argument on decriminalizing crossing over. The counter argument from republicans and others and democrats. Is that isnt that just going to encourage more people to come if its theres not a criminal penalty for it . Not at all. Look whats happened in the Trump Administration. More people trying to come now than when we started the Trump Administration. The other thing is, this law was passed in 1929, it really wasnt enforced as a criminal violation until 2004. When the Bush Administration started something called operation streamline. Im talking under reagan, george hw bush. Clinton. It was rarely ever enforced as a criminal violation. We dont need it. It should tell you something it wasnt enfortsed for 60 years. It allows this Trump Administration to incarcerate migrant parents and separate them from children. My point tonight when i said the Vice President hadnt learned the lessons of the past is look, it doesnt matter how many people you deport, or how cruel you are to the undocumented immigrants. Youre never going to deport your way to the negotiating table with mcconnell and the republicans. Instead we should offer the American People a strong positive alternative vision on immigration. Thats what my plan is. It includes this and a marshall plan. So people can find safety and opportunity in central america. The golden triangle. Northern triangle. And fixing the Legal Immigration system. And making sure that we end family detention. Would there be civil penalty for crossing the border . Most people dont realize in the country when we talk about for instance the deportation process, that is a civil process. That is not a criminal process. So, crossing the porder would remain against the law. There would be consequences. Many of the same consequences today. However, we would get rid of the law thats the tool that the Trump Administration or a future administration could use in order to separate children from parents. And ill tell you, anderson, to the American People, look, if somebody elects me, somebody votes for me for president they are not electing me follow. They are electing me to lead. Im a ware its under water. I believe we should go out there and make the case that we should lead on this. And not follow. And that in this election we can make a difference and bring new people into the fold and win on this issue. We have questions. I want to ask you just following up on that exchange. You imply you have learned the lessons of the past and the Vice President hasnt. Was that an implis criticism of the Obama Administration policy . You know, there were large numbers of deportation under the Obama Administration. His policies wrong . It was the honor of my lifetime to serve president obama. Stipulate that. One of the greatest president s. I will say, even a lot of folks in the administration recognize the administration could have done better. When it came to deportations. We need to learn the lessons of the past. Theres no comparison between o bum and trump when it comes to imgrags policy. Trump has a dark heart and wants to be cruel against them. What we can learn is that were not going to deport our way to the negotiation table. We cannot wait on immigration reform. And we need to get rid of the law thats a tool for future administrations to separate children from parents. When we do that and also build the rest of the plan, fixing the broken legal system and find opportunity in central america. Also doing things like getting the thousands of deported veterans living in mexico that served the country and making sure they can dom back to the United States and apply for citizen ship. Those are the things i think were going win on. A lot of people who became disillusioned and sat out in 2016 will not sit out and will vote in 2020. Less than a third of democrats support what youre talking about. Its really unpopular. I dont know about that. I have seen different polls. One said 75 . One said 45 . I saw one that said 27 . All americans. Okay. Lets say all americans. Not popular. If youre nominated to one against trump, who wants to build wall. And they can say about you open borders. All you want to do is open borders. How do you respond to that quickly and say i really dont want to have open borders when you want to decriminalize. Well maintain security. Theres still consequences. We have planes and boats and thousands of personnel. Thats the right wing talking point. The other thing is that so threatening nuclear war against another country over twitter is not disqualifying. Keeping little children on cold floors with blankets and dont have soap or no food. These images of people behind a fence telling reporters they havent eaten. That is completely more disqualifying and things we can point out and win the election with more than the idea that people are still going to end up in a court process. Just not the misdemeanor on the record. You said its a right wing republican talking point. Its also jay johnsons talking point. The secretary wrote a piece in the Washington Post and said your plan to decriminalize the immigrants crossing into the border illegally. It was essentially open borders. It isnt a republican talking point. Its coming from democratic strategists and the Obama Administration. I respect him. Its unfortunate he adopting the right wing talking point. He also, look, its true that theres a legacy to protect there. Of that department of homeland security. It doesnt surprise me that his position would be no, no, no, keep it. When im saying we need to improve this. A lot of folks who looked at this who understand immigration law, say it would make more sense to get rid of the law because we have consequences. Its still illegal to cross. If its a civil fine. Or penalty. What happens when somebody is intercepted . What happens is youre still taken in to custody and processed. You have a court date and appear. If somebody is making asylum claim make the claim. They have to appear in court. If youre undocumented and not making a claim. You have to appear in court. If you repeatedly fail to show up that turns into a crime. Like other civil offenses. But when there were going to be ice raids that the president said were going to happen. People spoke out against them. Those were people who according to the administration had not shown up to court dates repeatedly. The way we handled it in 2013 people were here before a certain date, should be put on a path way to citizen ship. What were talking about are not people that just showed up yesterday. People have been here and lived here for years and establish roots. Productive members of society and paying taxes and having kids and family here. Thats a different case. Than somebody that just came over. Nobody heart is more broken watching the kids being abused is me. It disgusts everybody. Isnt there some other way to deal with that . Than saying decriminalize the border. It seems like youre trying to solve one problem which everybody cares about. But creating another political problem thats freaking everybody out. Can you come up with a proposal that says you cant mistreat the kids and protect the kids . Without making seem like youre saying come one come all across the board. Is there some other answer . You have the right motivation to protect the kids. Its causing political problems. Donald trump has not been bashful in his cruelty. Im not going to be bashful in the common sense and compassion. This is a time to lead. I believe if we make the case, that could you pass a law. That just better protects those kids. Without decriminalizing the border. Is that possible . Or not. As long as that law is still there, youll have a tool that a future Administration Needs to do what trump did. Still vulnerable. I appreciate your time. Well take a short break. Thank you for being with us. How did you feel it went tonight . It was a Good Opportunity to have that platform to be able to address a lot of the major issues we face. Theres never quite enough time to get into the issues. But i think we were able to cover a lot. I want to play an exchange you had with harris. Which obviously got a huge amount of attention. I want to bring the conversation back to the broken criminal Justice System. That is disproportionately negatively impacting black and brown people across the country today. Senator harris says shes proud of her record as a prosecutor and will be a prosecutor president. Im concerned about this record. There are too many examples but she put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and laughed about it when asked if she ever smoked marijuana. She blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row. Until the courts force her to do so. She kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for california. And she fought to keep cash bail system in place. That impacts poor people in the worst kind of way. Thank you. Your response . As the elected attorney general of california, i did the work of significantly reforming the system of 40 million people. Which became a National Model for the work to be done. Im proud of the work. Making a decision to not just give fancy speeches or be in legislative body and give speeches on the floor but doing the work of being in the position to use the power that i had to reform a system that is badly in need of reform. How did you feel that went . She never answered the question. She didnt address the issues i brought up. These are examples that have been widely reported and documented. I think the people deserve answers. Given she said tonight a few times how proud she is of her record. Yet there are too many people in california who have directly suffered. Families who have been torn apart. People who have individually been harm td because of the decisions she made as attorney general. Clearly you your team had done research. And had facts down. Was your plan always to focus on her . Or do you have other plans to focus on other people if the opportunity came up. I didnt come into this with that tactical strategy. Obviously were aware of the different positions that other candidates have taken and given the opportunity discussing this incredibly important issue of criminal Justice Reform. One theres a bipartisan support to actually bring about the change that we need to see people like harris need to be held accountable for their record. Not something she did or said 50 years ago. This was the last job before she was senator. In terms of healthcare. Where are you on medicare for all. Or improve obamacare. Yeah. First let me say our objective has to and must be making sure that no person, no american who is sick in the country should go without care because they cant afford it. Thats why i have been and continue to be a supporter for medicare for all. That guarantees that healthcare. That Quality Health care for every american in the country. I believe like every other developed country in the world that has universal health care there is a role for private insurance to play for those who want it. For those who embrace taking away private insurance from people is that just strategy politically a nonstarter . I dont know about the politics of it. I think about it from the perspective of people. Of the American People. That if all of a sudden you are taking away their choice, thats not a very american thing. In my opinion. Our responsibility as leaders is to meet the challenge and address the problems that people are facing that theyre suffering because of the big insurance and big far ma influence over for so long. How theyre profiting on on the back of sick people. And bring down the cost. Make sure people can get the quality care they need. If they choose thats not what they want. They can get the private insurance. She seemed surprised. She was not expecting that from you. She said you were essentially an apologist for assad. And would never criticize him as a dictator or murder. Its unfortunate and a disservice to voters in this country. That she resorts to cheap smears. Rather than actually addressing her record. The issues that i have raised. And the fact she said shes proud of this record. If thats the case, voters deserve to hear about why shes so proud of the lives she negatively impacted and families she tore apart in california. What is your take on al assad . My take is one of a soldier. I have seen the cost of war. Firsthand. Iraq serving in the medical unit every day confronted with that high human cost of war. I will never apologize for doing all i can to prent more of my brothers and sisters from being sent into harms way to fight counter productive regime change wars that make our country less safe and take lives and cost taxpayers trillions more dollars. If that means meeting with a dictator. I would do it. Its about National Security. I understand that. Do you consider him a torturer and murder . Thats not what this is about. I dont defend or apologize or have anything to do with what hes done. If youre president. Theres a role of the president United States calling over human rights over seas. Hes head of a regime. That disappeared many people. The kind of leadership the example of leadership i follow. Is one where kennedy met with and worked with krusive to keep the American People safe. Obviously reagan met with. Roosevelt worked with stalen. Nixon met with leaders who think. They think about prak cat and how to keep the company stalen killed 120 million people. Thats my point. Yet roosevelt met with him and allied with him. To bring about an end to the war. Im sure roosevelt would have acknowledged stalen murdered millions. I dont dispute that. You wont say anything about al assad. I have been out spoken. These are detractions away from the central issue. Which is we are waging a are e jeem change war in syria. We have troops in syria today. Troops who are dying. Thats my focus. Thats why im running for president. To bring about the seat change. I understand. The not wanting to get involved militarily. And certainly a veteran you have more of a right than anybody to talk about that. And have an opinion. Just on the factual basis. He is a murderer and torturer. I dont dispute that. You said something on stage that i found powerful. I think people who do not have a have not served over seas. Do not have a loved one serving understand betrayal. Can you talk about how where you see that and how it motivates you . This is something that i have lived. And so many of my brothers and sisters in uniform have suffered the consequences of leaders who have lied to us. As an excuse to go and wage a regime change war. To topple a dictator. Very intentional. Over 4,000 of my brothers and sisters in uniform were killed as a result of that. So this is why im so serious and so focussed about bringing about the kind of change to the Foreign Policy that will end the wasteful wars. Work to end the new cold war and arms race. Making our country less safe. Making American People less safe. Taking lives of more of the service members. To speak of the cost on the American People. When i speak about betrayal its something thats continuing. We have seen it in iraq and libya. And syria. The cost and consequence of the continued wars. And how this president and i nengs briefly before i ran out of time. Is continuing this betroil through his direct and indirect support of al qaeda. In places like syria. Syria is in the city the headquarters for al qaeda. Trump is still trying to over throw the regime of assad and threatened anyone going after al qaeda in the city where they are in control of the city. He will use our military to go against who attacks him there. This is a betrayal to me and every family who lost a loved one on 9 11. Every american. That does sound like a talking point of the assad regime. It has said this is about the truth. Who served under Obama Administration and Trump Administration he was quoted saying al qaeda is stronger than ever. Why is trump making threats to anyone who threatens to go after them he will use our military to go after them. How do you explain that . To the ni9 11 first responders. Dealing with the effects. Its a political question. When senator harris was here in addition to the assad reference. She on stage she turned her back to you. She wasnt going to answer the question. She said shes at 1 in the poll or whatever. One of the interesting things that you are running tv ads. During the debate. You have yet to reach the threshold for the next one. Where are you . Will you be there in september . Were working on it. Were an under dog for sure. I appreciate letting people know who i am. And the experience i bring to the most important responsibility the president has. As commander in chief. How do you see joe biden and his record on crime criminal justice. 1994. You clearly didnt go after him. You chose to go after harris. What was that choice about . Do you see him implicated in mass incarceration. That crime bill was terrible. So many people lives have been ruined. He apologized and recognized he was wrong. The difference is senator harris said over and over again how proud she is of her record as attorney general. Which was the job she just had a couple years ago. Before she became a u. S. Senator. Rather than issuing cheap smears, voters deserve to hear from her about why shes so proud of the record that includes things that have directly harmed poor people. Black and brown people in california. People who are kept in prison past their sentences. Sentences were complete, why . Because they wanted to continue to use them for cheap slave labor for the state of california. Its crazy. Can i ask you if you had a choice between biden and harris. Where would you be . My choice is for president gabbard. I understand. All right. Bold choice. Let me try another one. Which is, there are democrats who are complaining that the dnc is controlling the process too much. That if say you dont make it in the next debate. Thats a death sentence for the campaign and the party shouldnt be doing that. Do you feel that youre being treated fairly in this . I dont think the dnco anyone else should arbitrarily start to pick and choose who should be the front runner in the race. Thats up to the voters. Were working on continuing to build the support. To meet those guidelines. Were gelting close. Were almost there. For anybody watching at home. A dollar will help us get across the finish line of 130,000 individual contributions. Its one of the beautiful things about these debates. You can do all the analysis before. When the game is played, everything changes. Now we have so much to chew on tonight. Going in and coming out. Topic a was and is mr. Biden the former Vice President. How will he do . Does he justify being the top of the poll. Is he the best choice . Lets discuss how he fared and had with Atlanta Mayor. A biden supporter. Joined by cnn politics reporter and editor as large. And miss april ryan. Always good to be with you. I need as much april as i can get. Mayor, thank you very much for taking the opportunity. At the onset if you are given the former Vice President a grade. A plus. No objectivity from the supporter. A plus plus. You believe that he showed what . That made him so stellar. A slogan, we know joe. What i saw tonight was the joe that we know. I saw a fighter a someone who can speak about the future. Saw someone who spoke about the past. And i saw someone who was a statesman on the stage. And he didnt back down. And i think obviously that was the complaint from the first debate and he corrected it. What i love about joe biden hes consistent. I know who he is. Can he survive theres a theory. Im going to want you to weigh in. Take issue with what i say. That the left has a tendency to eat its own. If the level of scrutiny he said to harris go easy on my, kid. And somehow thats a code or something that needs to be exploded. Can he survive that level of scrutiny within party . He can. We have somebody who is thin skinned in the white house. If someone cant ta take that in the spirit its meant. I would seriously doubt and hope that senator harris didnt take it as anything other than a light hearted greeting. But what i would say is that again this is the joe biden we know. Its the reason we call him uncle joe. He speaks hi mind and says things that arent always politically correct. We arent looking to elect god. Were looking to elect a great man. Political correctness is at a huge premium. Now more than ever. And some of his brothers and sisters on the stage obviously dont agree. You have gillibrand who went to school tonight on him. About whether or not he wants women to work outside the home based on something from years ago. Booker is demanding an apology for positions on the crime bill. And calling them biden bills. Even with the support of them and the back then. His past, how does he wind upturns whats used by the party as a negative into a positive . Its interesting to me, that people want to harp on the things in the past. From decades ago. But want to act like eight years with president obama didnt exist. And to me its like walking in for a job interview. And says scratch out eight years we cant talk about that. But we can talk about the last 30 or 40. You have to look at it in totality. I cant blame the candidates. They need a moment. A sound bite. Theyll do whatever they can do to get it. What i will say is we have to be careful as a party, that we dont do what we did to clinton in 2016. And send a strongest candidate and best bet to beat trump limping into the general election. Senator booker says unfair. To go apples to apples with the crime bill in new jersey. With what it represented. Its a discussion point. If you are going to talk about the Vice President s record, and pick it apart, then i think certainly your record is ripe for the picking as well. I think that as a party and candidates, we have to keep our eye on the prize. And i think that what you saw tonight was really to set the record straight. The Vice President can fight back and push back. Now i hope we can all step back and get back to the business at hand and thats beating donald trump. In 2020. How you do it matters. You can make the argument a line from my dearly departed father. When people say how come youre not going after the guy that come after you. Only in the movies they shoot behind them. The idea is therefore the Vice President shouldnt be going after booker. That way. You are mayor of a city of atlanta a lot of challenges. Similar to new ark. Do you believe he handled the situation with the police the right way . Or believe what the Vice President was saying is the right criticism. Cory probably did what he thought was best for the city. Whether or not it was the right thing to do, thats can be up for discussion. The reality is we need to look forward now. And what i will say is i have a great deal of respect in regard for senator booker. I dont think he is our best chance to beat trump. In 2020. Biden is. Biden can take michigan, wisconsin, he can take ohio. He can take georgia and north carolina. All of the states. Pennsylvania. The states that we have to have. To beat donald trump in 2020. April, chris. Get in. Tonight was fight night. We predicted it. And biden came for the fight. It was a handicap match. Because joe biden was attacked by everyone. And i did an unscientific poll on twitter. Saying who you think won. Overwhelmingly joe biden. Yes. Really . Unscientific poll. And yang. Then harris. So yang showed up. Biden, yang and harris . Yang showed up. If you show up to the fight he made good points. Im surprised to hear harris. She struggled. Ill say this to you. At the end of the day i was getting tex messages throughout the debate. And people who are for different people. Coming to me. They were saying they didnt like how people piled up on joe biden. Theres a sympathy factor now. He is still the leading candidate. Black women are going to be the ones who put him over the top and theyre saying hes number one. Theres a scene in the princess bride. Which we enjoy. Ill get there. Quickly. Trust me. Theres a scene where the giant character is struggling to fight the man in black. With the black mask. He says i havent fought one person in so long im used to fighting five, six. I think what you see what i saw tonight, is you saw Kamala Harris in the first debate really be the targeter. She went after biden. Nobody really went after her. In this debate, biden took more incoming, but she also took a fair amount. And it is much harder when five, six, seven people are coming at you. Or three or gabbard. Harris hasnt had that. Reminder, California Senate race not the most competitive in the world. She was going to win that from the start. How she bounced back. She struggled on health care. She was cowed for ten minutes after wards. Do you think biden showed you where he needs to be to take on biden . No. Not at all. He was better than the first debate. He has to be better than tonight. He has time. He had swag truth to power. I wouldnt be surprised if trump shows up for for a debate. Hell be there. Its national television. If he believes he will get out matched. I would be stunned if he shows up. He doesnt there is not a gene in trump that thinks he can be out matched. He doesnt struggle from confidence. Heres one thing. When we talk about what happened with harris and biden tonight. There was blood in the water coming in to debate from the first debate. And as you know harris, she struck a blow that could have been fatal. Typically for someone else. Biden was teflon. But at the end of the day the candidates said lets look at her. Lets do the opposition research. And went in on her. Joe biden was supposed to be the one who was going to go after her prosecutor record. That threw him off. If he would have done that. He owes gabbard a big thank you. For this debate. Yes, he does. She did a lot of the heavy lifting there. On harris. Gabbard made her own luck and shes been rewarded. For some exposure. Good luck to your candidate Going Forward and you as well. Stay with me. Coming up next were going back to anderson. Hell be taking us through yet another person who made a big mark. Especially in the unscientific poll. Andrew yang joins us next. I came home and cried. But, as ive seen my disease progress, the medicine has progressed right alongside it. Another big night here in detroit, joining us, another participant who made a big impact on the stage, andrew yang is with us. Thank you so much for being with us. It is great to be here. How do you think it went tonight . I thought it went great. It is great to be back here in detroit. I spent the last nine years here. It feels like a familiar home for me. In terms of, i feel like in the first debate you didnt get a lot of time. I felt like you got more time and you certainly made a strong impression on a lot of people in the room and viewing audience at home. At one point you called yourself an opposite of donald trump, asian man that likes math. We have to think about the real problems and not lapsing into the fairy tales that we are being told by the current president. I think that there is a lot of voices on the stage. I think yours is such an important voice. You are raising issues nobody is talking about. You are looking at it from a perspective that nobody is looking at it. You are taking a birds eye view saying we are all on the stage wearing makeup and missing out on all of the huge things about to hit us in the head. Spending seven years in places like detroit, cleveland, st. Louis. I saw the ground zero of what happened in terms of the communities and the aftermath with the jobs. The retraining programs that were put in place were largely ineffective. Almost half of the workers in michigan left the workforce. Of that group half filed for disability. You saw surges in suicides, drug overdoses. Why are the programs so ineffective . The truth is that human beings are not malleable or adaptable. I was at a truck stop in iowa the other week and if you tried to sell retraining to that group of truckers they would be more likely to punch you in the face. Human beings are not widgets. Right. You think of the people you know and the people in your life. If you were to say reinvent yourself it is a tall order. I have no actual skills. I could not be retrained to do anything other than this. Speaking of which we have to take a quick break. See, this is not a skill that is applicable in any way. I can throw to break. We will talk to andrew yang more after the break. Teacher lets turn in your science papers. Tech vo this teacher always puts her students first. Student i did mine on volcanoes. We need to do the opposite of what we are doing now. The opposite of donald trump is an asian man that likes math. You say we need to do the opposite of what we are doing right now. In what way . What do you mean . Donald trump came in saying look, there are all of these problems in the communities. We need to turn the clock back, bring the old jobs back and build a wall. I am saying we need to turn the clock forward, evolve the way we see work and value and stop trying to bring the old jobs back. We need to create the jobs of the future. You said, and i want to make sure i dont get it wrong, about changing the measurements of the 21st century economy. How we treat our kids. What family members that are working inside the home. The value we place on that. What would that do . I mean what would be the purpose of that other than it makes sense and it is rational as a human being and economic thing, why is that important . It is crucial. Even the person that invented gdp 100 years ago said three things. A terrible measurement for national wellbeing. He said we should include parent hood and motherhood. And we shouldnt include military defense spending in the calculation because it adds no economic value. Gdp is record highs and life except aens expe expectancy is going down. The goal is to build a scorecard twharwhat i call the american scorecard. You have our health and Life Expectancy and if someone decides to step away from the workforce and nurture their child that is not an economic sacrifice but the investment in the future. Instead of a teacher saying you are a cost, the value they are creating is massive. They might help 30 kids that year develop and become stronger. You can reorganize the economy. You have to do that because artificial is intelligence coming that will be difficult to compete with. They stress that the best investment you can possibly make is investing in children and our education. Dollar for dollar it is the best investment anybody can make. This is something i did not say on the debate stage. 2 3 of the kids academic performance is determined by parental time at the home, stress levels in the house, the type of neighborhood. Educators know this and know they can control a third of kids academic performance and 2 3 is determined out of school. If we want to get serious we will put resources into the families hands and homes, decrease the stress level, that will give our kids a chance to learn and educate. Explain why giving 1,000. Right. If you look at it, we spend a good amount of money in our schools. Yet we do not see the performance improvements that we want to see. We are channelling resources into something controlling 35 of the kids educational outcomes and ignoring the 65 that is parental time, the number of words read to the child. You need to get resources into the family to change the kids outcomes in a meaningful way. But i think all you are saying is really interesting. If you are president what does it look like . What are you going to do . Yeah. All right. Here we go. The great thing, it will be straightforward to go down the street to the bureau of Economic Analysis saying gdp, old and archaic. We are going to update it to the american scorecard including the other measurements. They make a lot of sense to the American People. If there is a american scorecard how you treat your kids and what time you spend with the kids and the educational outcomes of them, how does that impact anybodys life as a society atlarge . The state of the union every year i would report on how we are doing by the real measurements. I would be the first president to say here are the measurements for how our kids are doing. How our Mental Health is. You can invest and try to make resources. The trick is to tie corporate incentives to these measurements. If you are a big company. If you decide to do something positive in the community it is just p. R. But if you demonstrate it like i made these kids demonstratively stronger, they can get a tax credit for that. That is the only way to align the incentives to our own wellbeing. Right now it is heading in one direction and health and wellbeing are headed in another. I find that quarter of what you are saying incredibly interesting. I am acknowledging my own stupidity and your intelligence. I am interested in the automation issue. There are huge things going on that dont get discussed in this debate. We are discussing an economy that has vanished. We heard a lot of discussion about trade. How much is employment at risk to trade policy as compared with automation and the threats that automation poses to jobs that exist today . When i ran the numbers in michigan and industrial midwest, about 80 of the job loss is due to automation and machines. Automation is the bigger threat. So are the examples i use that americans understand. 30 of the stores and malls are closing. The most common job in the economy to be a cashier or retail worker. A 39yearold woman making between 9 to 10 an hour. You dont think of it as a robot came in and took orders but the amazon fulfillment center, wall to wall machines and robots. The automation issue, super important. It is coming. It is not slowing down. The question is for the big tech what are the policy guard rails that should be put around this . You are not going to stop it. How do you protect people or allow them to use the technology if training themselves is not the answer . There are a number of prominent tepro prominent people that supported my campaign and embraced it. If you are amazon, you have to give a tiny slice of every sale, facebook ad, Google Search and put it in our hands and build the economies working in our communities. I am talking about universal based information but there are other ways too. The other issue americans can understand directly particularly our teenage girls are becoming depressed and anxious because of smartphone use and social media use. If you go to Silicon Valley they have a strict no screens rule in the households. They know the Technology Better than anyone. A lot of people dont allow people to use it or limit it a lot. They use the technology to limit it. Two hours. Programmed in. Yeah. We need to get our arms around that Technology Application so our kids are not getting addicted to these slot machines. I cannot tell you how happy that i am. The reason for that. That is two things. Important things. In a crisis, if you get the right answer to the wrong question you still die. We dont ask the right questions. We spend all of this time trying to get the right answer to the wrong question. I am concerned about the racists, more concerned about the robots. Robots are going to do more damage to your community than the racists on any given sunday. You bringing it out and making it a part of the conversation is so important. I appreciate it. All right. We have to wrap it it up. Mr. Yang, good talking to you. More to come with our late night crew. Seems like castro came in second. Five weeks ago you all said Kamala Harris. I dont hear any Kamala Harris. No. Why is that . Let me ask you, scott. You told me five weeks ago you were almost ready to commit to Kamala Harris after seeing her performance. I dont. I thought that when she was attacked, i dont think she performed well. She was on the defensive quite a bit tonight. It did not help her. Did anybody think she did a good job . No. What do you think of the job she did . I think she spent a lot of her time attacking joe biden tonight and just being very, you know, mean spirited almost with the way that she was constantly going after him. That turns you off . A little bit, yes. But all of the infighting. But when booker did it, it was in a different way. That is why, for me, booker did a better job. Is that why you all think booker did a better job . He had insults but did it in a nicer way. Is that how you feel . Kind of. Tonight he was more personable. It did not seem like he was bringing up personal attacks. They could defend themselves making jokes. Why do you think that booker was stronger . I thought castro was my favorite tonight. Why do you think castro was stronger than booker . I think he was solid last time. I think that immigration, he is solid there. Very solid. Harris it is tough for kamala to come back on. You are alluding to the anger between democrats. For the last four times while you are watching the debates. I am watching the debates too but i am watching all of you. None of you looked as happy tonight as you did last night or five weeks ago. You didnt like the attacks by the democrats. Right. Is that how you feel . I do feel that. I think yesterday they did a better job of elevating the conversation around the issues. That is what we care about, the issues. Much less about attacking the person and records of the past. It is more wonderful to work on what to do to solve problems in the future. None of you believe joe biden did a great job. Tell me why. I think he is a moderate candidate and can get the moderate vote and i think everyone faltered tonight. I dont think it will affect him. Anyone concerned about joe biden . You told me five weeks ago you thought he did the best job. Tonight he seemed a little off. But i have not given up on him. Kate, we have spent a lot of time together. Kate is a farmer. Right now 12 19 central time. 19 minutes into kates 33rd birthday. She usually wakes up at 5 30 in the morning. Happy birthday. A lot of nice people will be with them for the next debate also. Those people are really dedicated and really love you to be staying up this late to talk about this stuff. We are back here with chris, april ryan and senior washington correspondent. I was wildly off with my expectations of who they would say won. Julian castro, big. Booker, big. What does it mean in terms of how they turn rahrah into revenue or relevance . Cory booker has been big. He came in there with humor. We heard they liked his approach to this. I was inside the debate hall for part of it. He and joe biden were interacting in the commercial break. He made this less personal. But i think he got a lot of points in. Maybe an infusion of energy. Castro is still fighting to get into the debate in september. Joe biden withstood so much incoming. Leaves detroit walking, not wounded. Lets see how voters react to all of this. Over the last two nights a big shift last night. Joe biden tried to steer it in the middle tonight. I dont know it changes much but it gives cory booker an edge going in to august. The candidates, we talked about it before. The candidates, the left is dominating the discussion. Now in the party you were polling the party. 8 of 10 say no. We are center left, not far left. One thing about watching booker and thinking of obama. Not because they are both africanamericans but one thing that struck me with obama, what is Barack Obamas ideology. You know. We were sitting here talking about the possibility of who could be the people that they wanted. I told you booker. Three bookers. You didnt have booker. I think he has potential. I am going to keep going. I am antijoe biden there. Right through the moderators warning. Booker and obama both, the positive, happy warrior messaging it does work. America likes sweet strength. You cant be harsh. Especially from democrats. I did not see the Julian Castro thing going. I liked his comportment. But i did not have him on my list. He needs it. I told you last night. You did. I said julian will do the clapback. None of them said harris. Or biden. We have to remember that iowa wound up picking barack obama. When we were talking about the possibilities, i kept saying you have to do booker. I did not think of Julian Castro. I thought about it. I did not say castro. In a time we are dealing with immigration issues. In a time we are talking about these kids dying in these cages or in custody in our cust tee. The people with cages. Where is the humanity. Julian castro talks about it as a heart issue. Lets not deal with criminalizing this. Decriminalization. Cory booker, he has come up wanting to show out. He is no longer the mr. Rodgers walt disney person we used to think of. Little bit of edge. I have to leave it there. Coop has another one of the candidates ready. After this break, another player in the mix. One of them joining me now. Thank you very much. How do you think that it went for you . Big night for us. We made sure that the climate was on the debate stage. I think i showed a passion and unusual level of commitment. I think we showed a difference between the candidate. I think my plan was called the gold standard. It showed to be uniquely qualified scientifically to do what we have done. A bump of momentum. I got twice as many donors in the last few hours than it was when i announced. For you Climate Change has been issue number one for a very, very long time. Why so early on did you focus on that . Well, because we only have one planet. Seriously. We are talking about the survival of civilization as we know it. Now the public is understanding this. And i think it wasdifferiates m my sense of commitment and prioritization, and the urgency of my plan. So, when you have something that is a good contrast with other candidates, it gives you a chance to keep the human species going. That is understandable. Do you think it is an issue that people vote on. This is not a table top issue. You can argue that it is. It is not an immediate in front of you table top. What is happening is that there is a very dynamic change on this subject. At that time it is a line on the graph. The parts per million. We will explain what parts per million were. Now it is a reality. It has seen paradise, california burning down. It is changing Public Perception rapidly. Changed 12 points. 75 of americans, including about half republican citizens saying that it is a problem. We should do something meaningful about it. Wayne gretzky, you always want to skate to where the puck is going to be. The puck is moving rapidly of a public that wants an answer. At the same time the wave is cresting, there is an economic beneficial wave because of jobs are expanding so quickly. They have grown twice as fast as the rest of the economy. I do think this is a Tipping Point moment. I think you heard about the accomplishments that i had and multiple things as a governor as well. Clearly, going up against donald trump on this issue. He talks about clean water. Clean air. That seems to be the extent of the lip service he is willing to pay. The term Climate Change is not something this administration discusses or uses. Not only does he not use it, he suppresses it. He tried to suppress the science. He will not allow scientific communities to share. No. They will not allow people to testify to congress and legislative bodies. We are financing the science. He is refusing to share that with the American People. You know, treason is a high level word to use. But a president is supposed to protect the nation. He is exposing us. We have a known threat. He is suppressing information about it. You are putting it in National Security terms. It is interesting, when you talk to the briefers at the cia and the pentagon. They go and brief the guy and he ignores him. He has had multiple generals and admirales saying this is a major National Security threat because it is going to cause mass migrations, causing political instability causing political violence. The worst thing refugees on the border today, not all but a significant number of folks on the border are starving. This is a multilateral threat, if you will. The public is getting it. I am sensing this. Now, obviously i would like people to go to jayinslee. Com and make sure i am on the debate stage. How far are you or how close are you . About 95,000. We have 35,000 to go. If you have 35,000 friends i hope you will call them up for me. I have maybe two. That ha a start. They are asleep probably. They are not watching. I am wondering how it was on the stage and what you made of the tone and the tenor of the debate . I think cnn did an excellent job on the debate. The moderators were fair. They had an interesting discussion between the candidates. I think they allowed the people to have a good interchange. I got what i was intending to get, and that is to make sure climate is a very prominent part of the debate. To make sure i showed there is a major difference between myself and the other candidates. I am the only one that said it should be the First Priority of the United States. If this is not job one, it wont get done. We have to make this the First Priority. I think we got a little bit of my vision to show how it is different with what we have to get done. Governor inslee, thanks if are your time. We talked to a lot of candidates and heard from the voters as well. Dozen or so candidates still not qualified for the next debate in september. The last moments they had to address a National Audience of this size. Over the next month we will see who can build on these performances to win donors, boost poll numbers and come back to a debate stage. Also joining us is a former to go to right away. Who i want a washington corporate lobbyist representing interests in defense, transportation and Energy Companies and a cnn political commentator. David. I have to say again that i feel that we came out of this, republicans, in a pretty good mood. You know, the first night a lot of energy. A lot of fire in the belly. Pretty left of Center Policies that will not appeal to a lot of folks. Lets see what the Vice President will do, the frontrunner. He has been doing this since 1972. He comes out and he has a muelleresque performances, stuttering with the numbers, not getting the facts straight. He closes. He is pitching his go text this number and sends people to a website that doesnt exist. He didnt look ready for primetime. Everybody is saying lets see what he will do next time. He has been doing this since 1972. And then at this round gathering here every candidate makes their way. Where is the Vice President . Did he come by here tonight . No. He is not working for it. It is reminiscent of Hillary Clinton. And bob dole. Jeb bush. Feeling they didnt need to do interviews. There was a regalness. Then Hillary Clinton is calling in like everybody else. You know who showed up, donald trump came to every one of these things and worked it hard. There has to be the fire in your belly. The Vice President had a long, storied career and now getting beaten up by andrew yang. Will he be able to withstand that drubbing and bring the energy . One thing that needs to be said, the reason that david is feeling good is because joe biden continues to beat donald trump consistentlyn polls. He does not want biden to be the nominee of the party. There is no doubt biden will have to go out and grab this thing if he wants it. There is a core strength to his candidacy that continues in polls. We will see what happens after this debate. But make no mistake, you dont want him to be the nominee. Listen, i dont want Steve Bullock. I never want to see that guy again. Nice meeting him. He is another great candidate. The Vice President , people will vote for him reluctantly. I think there is a lot of Energy Behind bernie and Elizabeth Warren. People are excited for them. I dont think there is a same excitement. I want to Say Something about the polls too. Joe biden is clearly leading in the polls and clearly leads donald trump by the largest margin. When you look at the polls, they are all beating him. We have seen polls where bernie sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris beats him. Donald trump is going in to this the weakest incumbent ever. Should democrats Pay Attention to any poll . It just shows that it is open. After tonight the race is more open than before. A couple of things. First of all, i do not think that david is wrong in that if you are just going based on the debates the moderates are in trouble. They dont have anybody that has shown up to be the standard bearer and can make the case and can push back. Elizabeth warren and bernie really have proven themselves as great standard bearers for the left. You have to say look, the moderates are in trouble. David makes another point. There is more going on than the debates. It is easier to get excited. I dont think you will see a lot of Poll Movement with biden. Biden will be right where he is. You might see cory booker climbing up a point or two or gillibrand climb up a half point. Familiari fundamentally i think joe biden survived, kamala got scuffed up a little bit. She will have to come back showing what she is made of. Elizabeth warren really secured herself as someone that can take the fight forward. Other than that the fight goes on. I think biden did what he had to do, reassure his supporters. The bar was low. We have been saying that all night. I think his supporters wanted to see somebody talking about policy in a way that made them feel comfortable. He did not do it all the time. But he was a lot better than the first time. I am not sure he reassured supporters still looking for his webpage. And get people to judge. I think what they didnt get and what nobody has yet is somebody they can really cheer for, and maybe that takes a lot of time. Nobody cheered for donald well, some people did but people did not cheer for donald trump at the beginning. See if biden can become a candidate or someone else can. It is also true that nobody else e verged in this moderate lane. People are looking for Steve Bullock and tonight for michael bennett. He had good moments around education but was a sleepy performer overall. You heard in the focus group, asking about joe biden. Yeah. Africanamerican man. He still likes joe biden. But for now the moderate support is perked with joe biden. I think you will see movement. Elizabeth warren, maybe she will get more supporters. I think there is a fight for white liberals in particulars and a lot of folks helped themselves in that group of people tonight including booker and castro. This is one of the strengths that biden has. He is dominant in his lane. 44 that call himself moderate supporters. There is a big crowd over there on the left. Warren and booker are fighting hard, not booker. Warren. Warren. Is some of that name recognition still. For biden. They know who he is. I think that some of that is that. If it is just about name recognition, why would it be limited just to that . Why would he be so dominant in that. Listen. I said it earlier. I think that because he was under siege tonight and basically he was in survival mode fighting off people, he did not get a chance to tell a coherent story in the way that Elizabeth Warren told the story last night. He has been doing this since 1972. Not this. Not this. Getting dog piled. I do not understand your guys arguments. I understand davids arguments. Yeah. He has been doing this. I dont mean any disrespect. I am not making excuses for biden. I do not think that if he had completely collapsed tonight. Listen being attacked by Tulsi Gabbard is different than being attacked by donald trump. Listen, he has three problems. One, the first time that he got hit really hoard race by Kamala Harris. Then tonight he got hit hard on sexism by gillibrand. And then, you know, there is another punch thrown by kamala. He is getting beat up on the race and gender angle. Right now you have a frontrunner that is getting whipped dizzy. He was able to turn it on gillibrand at the end of it like you went to school with me and said i was great and now you are running for president. The only difference is that now joe biden is running for president. Totally okay to say i think you are a great ally. Thanks for standing up for us. The second you say i want to be your category that puts you in a different category of criticism. Casual observer. A huge Enthusiasm Gap between the purists in the party and the practici pragmatists. I think he survived tonight. It was a challenge. He is going to have to do more. I accept your analysis in that regard. Dont underestimate the enthusiasm that donald trump demonstrates. I dont see any sign that the because donald trump insures that. You know, it will come down to november 3, 2020, it will be decided by a very small margin. So, that lack of enthusiasm, if it is joe biden on the one side, donald trump on the other, i can tell you who the voters will be more enthusiastic. How do you know that . Look what happened in 2018. The other factor no. You are from pennsylvania. This race will play out in pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, and the question is biden the more potent candidate in those states than the other candidates . I bet you it is not even the states, it is county by county. Who is the democrat in you think biden is effectively deflated. Who would be the democrat that you think could go up against trump in a successful way or that trump would be afraid of. I still think that joe biden is the best standard bearer for the party too to go from a home county to beaver county, the counties that democrats have to take back. He is still your best case. I am upon nnot sure he has the enthusiasm. Good discussion, chris and his gang will put the night into perspective when we come back. Its been a long time since andrew dusted off his dancing shoes. Some day, not today, but people will decide to take what happens in the commercials as suggested and put it on television, and it will be wildly, wildly popular. And several people will lose their jobs. None of these, though. Its all based tonight off of cory booker who iowa likes and his kool aid comment, which i thought was corny, and then jayz came and said, jayz, he said kool aid comes from nebraska. Thats true. But i still didnt think it was a good debate line to bring it back here to the theater. It was a subliminal message for nebraskans. It sent us down the road of nostalgia about who had the most connections to the most cultural references that they shouldnt have been made on the debate stage. But look, here is the reality. While you are probably right to say that the comportment of senator booker in bringing that up with the Vice President and his feelings about his own past in newark and whether they were factually correct dont really matter when you say he had a great night. I think he did have a good night. This is cory bookers probably shining moment of his campaign so far. He will qualify for the next debate. Once we take stock in what happened the last two days, the party shifting very far to the left in what happens in every campaign has now happened here. The firing squad internally was fully engaged. They were all going after donald trump. That really didnt happen. So donald trump was sitting back in washington, watching all of this. Think how Many Campaign ads can be cut off of the last two days here in detroit about the medicare for all plan, about other stuff. So i think donald trump is actually the winner of these last two days. I would say if you were to guess going into this debate whos going to be attacked more in tonights, barack obama or donald trump. Yeah, thats true. I was stunned. Look, joe biden has latched his campaign to iowas barack obama vip barack obama trust his judgment. But i was stunned at the number of people willing to say he didnt get it done on immigration. Barack obama, just from a purely political perspective is the most popular democrat among democrats, period. 95 . Theyre coming at him, but i guarantee they would love to have him on his side. Theyre making the bet if anybody is going to get his support before the convention, it will be the former vp. Interestingly, we keep talking about this. But its one of the weird disconnects between media life and real life, which is this is not what this election is going to be. No. What has happened these last two days. For sure. This will not be. Well, thats not a real medicare for all and youre the party that wants to take it. It is going to be an identity election. Well dont really see other than these little fringe people we should be talking about trump. We should really be going at him. He is the enemy. Theyre not ready. Identity and reaction. Were reactionary people. And what we see with these candidates, theyre reacting to what theyre hearing. Theyre reacting to the news of the day. Because im telling you, just look at joe biden. He flipflopped on a couple of issues just over the past couple of months. Kamala harris, one minute she is here on health care, the next minute she is here. So we are reactionary. We still have a long time to go. And you see these im not going to call them fringe, but the ones who werent on the top, they are making noise. Last night, who would have thunk it . Marianne williamson. She is the mvp. Some of those candidates dont have a long time to go. The reality is august is the critical month. One month from today, these candidates have to qualify for that september debate. If they dont do it, boy, its hard to get oxygen out there. The good thing for joe biden is bill de blasio almost certainly will not be on the next stage. Tulsi gabbard probably wont either, which is good for harris. That for me is the biggest takeaway. The look in senator harris eye when Tulsi Gabbard went after her. Most of those people dont live with those two opponents from tonight. Why harris went attacked first and Tulsi Gabbard pivoted back to biden. Because she knows the long game is that, of course. Something we didnt talk about tonight, de blasio and the eric garner situation, and that came up. There is a protest. Yeah. Tamika mallory, who is part of black lives matter and also she was part of the womens march movement, she was one of the leaders, she got them talking about fire pantaleo. Who would be the one to fire pantaleo but de blasio. And de blasio punted. Punted. To the vp about it. And he is the mayor of new york. He has the opportunity. He says oh, theyre going to get justice. How . So many people from the naacp Legal Defense fund, people were on twitter saying look, what do you mean . Whats going on . Hes kept his job, the internal review showed or saying that he can stay in his job. So whats going to happen . Where is the justice for eric good afternooner who cried out 11 times i cant breathe in that police chokehold. De blasio tried to make his name tonight asking the vp questions. The one he needed to answer he didnt. Here is the thing. Youre right its hard to get oxygen. But what does it tell you about where this party is headed . Look, of course Marianne Williamson, im a fan of her books. Of course she is not going to be a viable president ial choice. But that she and yang and these other satellites are saying what you need to hear to capture the imagination of your base. Theyre putting it on the table. But if your not hearing it for the people who are polling highest, you have a weird disconnect. No doubt. Look at all the senators. Weve been in the weeds pretty deeply for the last couple of days here. Youre right. This election is not going to turn on someones medicare for all plan. I think thats why Marianne Williamson was speaking so what she was saying was resonating with people. A lot of resonance. Listen you guys are great, especially in the commercials. Jayz, thank you for bailing us out here tonight as well. Go get some kool aid tonight. Its always great. Our thanks, my thanks to you and our thanks to all of you. Thank you for joining us here in detroit. Thanks especially to the people of detroit. You have been beautiful hosts and hostesses. We wish you the best in continued resurgence. Right now lets give you an encore of tonights cnn democratic debate. Lets get after it. And thank you. Remember, you still got a long roi to go. Cnn will take you there every step of the way. Stay with cnn. I want to start the debate with one of the Top Priorities for democratic voter, and that is health care. Senator harris, this week you released a new Health Care Plan, which would preserve private insurance and take ten years to phase in. Vice president bidens Campaign Calls your plan, quote, a have it every which way approach, and says its just part of a confusing pattern of equivocating about your
