Of this as soon as possible. Test, trace and isolate. Thats the hard part. Its easy for him to be a cheerleader and he should behind the scenes be pressing every single lever of government to speed a vaccine safely and effectively along. The press conferences suggesting by fall, i agree with dr. Kaplan, its much more about a Reelection Campaign than any matter of science. He also stressed, dr. Caplan, that testing is overrated. He didnt say that today, it was yesterday but he said testing is overrated. Its overrated in the white house. Its not overrated if youre doing actual medicine and trying to work your way out of this pandemic. Look, we have tests, just dont have enough of them. We could contact trace. We could isolate and quarantine people who were infected, and that is the way out. Im not saying to stop vaccine efforts. Im not saying to not press to cooperate but have we ever made 3 billion doses of anything and roll them out within a few months . Never. Its never happened. Its not going to happen here. One other problem, brianna. The president said maybe theres people who dont want to take it. He is opening the door to antivaccine sentiment. We should be in a situation where we have vaccine and people say we dont want to take it and then never achieve the kind of immunity and Group Immunity we need to beat the pandemic that way. Yeah, and look, its really hard. Youre echoing what another expert just said on air. Its very hard to imagine that not happening given the door clearly not open for some. Rob, one of the things the president said in this rose garden event, theres a lot of states with basically a testing overcapacity. He said like its labs, waiting, or theyve got all the Testing Capacity and its not being used. What did you think of that . Well, if in fact he has data that labs are available and tests arent being used, perhaps theres a problem in the supply chain of swabs or a reagent which many governors including my Governor Whitmer here in michigan said and the president has the authority and the ability and the moral imperative to use all the levers of government, to use the defense production act to ensure those supply chains are wide open and available. If there are people in labs waiting to do tests, he has the solution to that. Again, its just hard work. Not popular with his corporate class that support his campaign and the other republicans in congress. So it seems hes been unwilling to do that thus far. Art, one thing youve argued i think a lot of people would raise their eyebrows at is that its medically ethical to inject people with coronavirus in order to test vaccines effectiveness. Explain to us. What were faced with now, if we dont follow robs advice and work our way through testing, if we go warp speed with vaccine, you have to give people whatever this miracle agent is and wait for them to become infected and see what happens and that takes years. The only real way you could speed the process is if you gave them a vaccine candidate and then gave the virus and study in a small number of volunteers what would happen. Thats the only way i could think of to put warp speed behind these studies. Its obviously ethically contention and defensible given the havoc this pandemic is causing around the world. Youd have to make sure people volunteered and did it altrui altruistically and an informed way but if we dont pursue that route, the idea were going to get results from clinical testing vaccines waiting for natural infections to occur, thats years. Yeah. All right, thank you so much doctor for breaking some down to us. This map shows cnn analysis of how each state is trending when it comes to new coronavirus cases. Governor greg abbott ended the states stay at home order on may 1st and began a phased reopening of the state. Joining me now from austin is dr. Pritesh gandhi, a specialist in internal medicine and tenth congressional district. Why are we seeing a surge of cases in texas . Sure. Thanks for having me on today. Its a complicated issue. We are living e ing in a state number one in uninsured texans. Couple that level of limited access with turnaround times for testing that can take three to four to even five or six days and you layer on top of that limited access to tests and the inability to have a coordinated approach to who were targeting and when were targeting these patients and we find ourselves in the situation that were in today. Its not surprising with Public Health experts and medical professionals like myself. And youre really in the middle of this. Tell us what youre seeing in this clinic. Sure. So on average, we have about 20,000 uninsured or underinsured individuals we take care of here at the clinic i work at, for a clinic like our size, we have about 150 tests on hand. And so we struggle in terms of being able to provide ready access to the patients where they are at and so, there are things that clinics like ours can do. And clinics in medical institutions around the state. We could do gis mapping where we overlay the sickest of patients, comorbid conditions where its set up, were doing that work but it would really benefit from a regional effort to be able to find patients where theyre at so we can doexpansive testing. Abbott tests by the white house they say frequently miss cases. Quote, the fact it misses positive samples makes this technology unacceptable in our clinical setting. That is what researchers wrote. Is this something that you would use in your clinical setting . It is definitely concerning. Now, look, we have to take a step back and recognize this is not a Peer Reviewed study. It was not done in a controlled setting. It was done under suboptimal conditions. That being said, some of the early returns on that test show that up to 15 , perhaps up to 50 false negative rate. And so i think when you take a step back, the clinic like ours likely wouldnt have confidence that that test will give the appropriate result and when you look at subsequent fda guidance, theyre saying that, well, when you have a negative test and the patient has symptoms, you may need to do a second confirmatory test but were talking about being in a situation where folks dont have access to do that second confirmatory test and if that test takes three or four, six or seven days to return, you can see how that can quickly spiral downwards and so, i think we have to take one big step back and recognize that were struggling with limited access to testing. Were struggling with doing Contact Tracing in an expansive way and on top of that, were starting to get reports not as accurate as theyve been purported to be. Dr. Pri tesh gandhi, thank you so much joining us from austin texas. Appreciate it. Happy to be here. A woman arrested for striking officers over her refusal to wear a mask. Thanks so much to everyone for that. Country music star keith urban showing that socially distanced concerts are possible. The grammy award winner took to the stage last night holding a private concert for more than 200 First Responders at a drivein theatre outside nashville. God bless you guys. God bless the health care workers. Thank you so much. God bless the driveins. I had the pleasure of talking to keith urban about it earlier today. Tell us how you came up with this idea and how all of this came together. Well, first of all, driveins are still happening. That was a bit of a shock to me. But when we thought about the things we needed to do, which was to figure out how to play to people in safe distances and obviously people in cars is the primary basis of a performance right now, i think, driveins were a no brainer because, first of all, theyre set up for all the cars to be facing the stage. Secondly, youve got this readymade massive video wall behind you which every Live Conference has video walls behind them. The driveins had it for 50, 60, 70 years. We just tapped into the Projection System and were able to set a stage at the base of the screen. Everybody in their cars and it was the first one. You know, its a proof of concept, so we learned a lot last night about things that we could do to make it better, but last night was a blast. And for a good cause as well. For a wonderful cause. Look, these First Responders have been dealing with a lot and they certainly deserved just a moment of normalcy. What was it like . Was it different performing in front of this audience . Yeah, well, i mean, there wasnt the sort of Immediate Reaction and crowd energy that you get when we play, we get that kind of, the cycle of energy flowing. There was just various car horns and headlights and cheers and singing of lots of people in vehicles, but we had such a great time. I wonder, looking at this, if other performers will look at this because this is the first of its kind in the u. S. Is this a model for how other performers are going to get before bigger audiences . Oh, i think for sure. First of all, weve got to play. Weve got to play somewhere. Its what we do. So i think the idea of playing to people in vehicles is a bit of a no brainer, figuring out scaling that up to play more people. Doing it in a safe way with the guidelines. I mean, we spent a month putting this particular concept together, even though it wasnt for paying public, it was specifically for Vanderbilt University medical center. All the people there last night were doctors, nurses, health care workers, emergency responders, front liners. Everybody was in that field and we gave away every ticket last night to them. So it was a way to see what this could look like and its definitely a potential. I think you could see potentially, in massive parking lots. You know, country concerts are renowned for tailgate parties. I think the concert will be the Tailgate Party now. Thats a good point. I wonder what you think about how weve seen some states relaxing standards, for instance, concerts are now allowed in missouri, as long as social distancing requirements are met, which some promotors say thats actually just impossible to execute. Would you have concerns about performing before a crowd where its sort of on your honor system of staying a certain distance apart . Well, i mean, this is the challenge were all in the midst of. Promotors, musicians, road crew, were all in this right now. The audience, of course, because youve got people who are like, yeah, ill come tomorrow and jump in the mosh pit and other people completely aghast at anyone even considering it. So were trying to figure out the right way through it all. But communicating with everybody on what works, what doesnt work, how we can do this. Again, the case of this concert last night that we did, we spent a month planning it so that we had minimal road crew. I didnt really have a live band on stage. I had two players, but they were 8 or 10 feet away from me. And some ways, it was like glorified ckaraoke. There was a guy playing tracks and then keyboard, sort of his laptops of tracks and im singing live and playing but it meant that we had very limited crew. All the crew had masks on. Crew it took to set up the stage. It was very minminimal. We were able to do it in a great way and being outdoors help huge. Yeah. I dont think it was glorified karaoke. Maybe glorious karaoke as we watch there. Thank you, keith, youve been doing a lot of really creative things. Rolled out urban underground, your private studio which youre in now and now we have the pleasure of watch you model this potential for live concerts. Thank you so much for doing this and keith, thanks for coming in. States have been grappling with how to handle commencement ceremonies. Tomorrow, cnn honors graduates of 2020 with a two hour event. Bring out the bold™ well, stay at home orders and quarantines are essential to containing, the cases of Domestic Violence spiked especially against women. The u. N. Predicts six months of lockdown could result in an additional 31 million cases of gender based violence worldwide. My next guest have started an initiative to tackle gender based violence during this pandemic. Cheryl sandberg is the c. O. O. Of facebook and michelle nun is the president and ceo of care usa. Thank you so much to both of you for being here. This is such an incredibly important topic that we have been covering here on this program. I want to begin with you, michelle, because we know from the spike in domestic assaults many victims, theyre stuck. Theyre quarantined with their abusers. So the irony of this moment for them is that quarantine is not a safe place. Whats the biggest challenge theyre facing in getting help . Yeah, so home is not a safe place for everyone and we know that with the increase of economic insecurity, Mental Health challenges, the stress of this pandemic, that women in particular are facing extraordinary crisis as it relates to gender based violence and Domestic Violence and we need to ensure that we are enabling them the capacity to reach out and that means more crisis hotlines, that means more information about this issue so that friends can help friends and it means around the world and here at home, that we are doing the things that we can. Whether thats, again, opening up shelters and ensuring that theyre available for people, or whether thats providing cash assistance that gives women enough economic independence to be able to leave if they need to. And cheryl, this is really a broad effort because globally, women, including pregnant women not getting the health care they need. This is a Health Crisis and everyone knows this is an economic crisis but this is also a crisis for women and girls and we need to see it that way and see it clearly. Women do the great majority of the worlds work and the worlds care giving. They earn a very small percentage of worlds income and less of the worlds resources. Whether its health care, Maternal Health care, clean water. Women have less of that. Education and so, this crisis needs to be viewed with a gender lens, so that we step up and protect women and girls, particularly in the most vulnerable places in the world, which is why the work cara is doing is so important. Michelle, what do you want women who are in a dangerous abusive situation or maybe someone who knows someone who is in a situation like that . What do you want them to know about whats available for, as far as resources go for them . We want them to know that there is help. That they can have the capacity to reach out. There are crisis hotlines. Theres a lot of services that are available, and we want to ensure thats true not only here in the United States but also true around the world. Were seeing, again, 30 to 40 to 50 percent increases to places that include refugee camps or just cities like atlanta or minneapolis. And so we want people around the world to, again, stand in solidarity with women and girls. Cheryl has rightly articulated women and girls face a disproportionate impact and ensure we are taking a gender lens here and its why were so grateful to cheryl and others stepping up at this moment to ensure that there is attention and that, again, women and girls know that they are a part of the solution, but theres also a help line for them if they need it. Such an important issue. Turning now to facebook, facebook is factoring very large in this pandemic for a really myriad of reasons here. This is providing people much needed social connection but theres also these long standing concerns about the prominence of misinformation on the network that in the case of coronavirus could put Peoples Health at risk. In april, there was a study that showed it can take up to 22 days for facebook to issue warning labels on false content. Im wondering, are you confident that the majority of misinformation now has a warning label on it and that the time frame for labeling it has shrunk. If were doing all we can, well never be perfect on a site as big as facebook but our track record on coronavirus is good and i think builds on a lot of work we did. The way we prioritize warning labels, things that go viral quickly get seen much faster than that. With coronavirus, we took a very hard step from the beginning, which is that any information, which could lead to imminent harm, misinformation, got warning labels and then it came down. We are really focused on that. Weve now put warning labels and taken information down on tens of millions of pieces of content. And more importantly, weve pushed about 2 billion people to Accurate Health information. Health information provided by local Health Ministries and the cdc, and were going to continue to work really hard to get everything that needs to come down down, to mark the things that need to be false false and most importantly, to get Accurate Information to people where they need it. And cheryl, i also wonder, weve seen twitter announcing its going to allow some of the workforce to continue working from home forever. So thats obviously reflecting a possible new normal for corporate america. Is facebook going to do the same . Is facebook thinking about this as a possibility . Well, we know theres a lot to be seen and were learning a lot through this crisis. We were one of the First Companies that sent everyone home and we have announced were going to be one of the last to come back. We recognize that a lot of our jobs can be done from home, and there are essential workers and workers that cant work from home. So well keep people to help workers as much as we can. What we do over the long run, were learning every day. I think we are learning that more work can be done from home than we thought. But were going to see what we want to do as this unfolds. Right now, its really all hands on deck through this crisis. All right, Cheryl Sandberg. Thank you. Michelle nunn, thank you. We have been covering story after story about the increase in Domestic Violence and its been amazing to see the efforts including yours to combat this terrible problem.
