Diagnosis. People who have heard of pancreatic cancer at all know its a challenging cancer and stage 4 that basically means the cancer has spread somewhere outside of the pancreas itself, so thats what that statement is basically telling us. He also talked about the fact he had this diagnosed on a routine visit. And thats important important note. That part of the reason this cancer is often found late is because theres no symptoms typically and i think thats what the congressman was telling us. He also said it was reconfirmed that probably they were suspicious and they subsequently did a biopsy or something to confirm the diagnosis. Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, thats the diagnosis. The congressman talks a lot about being optimistic and the various fight he wants to have Going Forward and there are Treatment Options which hes discussing with his doctors and family now to figure out the best path forward. And what would treatment for him look like, is there a typical protocol in this case . Yeah, there are some typical things. You know, typically when you think about stage 4 pancreatic cancer one of the goals typically if its earl yecancer is try to remove the cancer surgically. If its stage 4 that means the cancer has spread so surgical removal is not going to be a cure. Thats one thing doctors are sort of thinking about and if they do surgery if theres blockages to sort of relieve that pressure but really most likely its going to be some form of chemotherapy and or possibly radiation but typically chemotherapy is given into the blood stream and specifically targets the cells and tries to prevent them from growing, thats the goal. Hes 79 years old, how much does age factor in all of this, and health . Thats a good question. And what i would tell you is that we typically really focus on the fizz logical age of someone as opposed to the chronological age. And what i mean by that is there are people who are 50 years old who have physiology of 80 and vice versa. So typically this type of cancer and the treatments i just talked about are often done in people who are older because thats when this cancer typically, you know, is diagnosed. So it does play a role. Its certainly a tough diagnosis. Its harder to undergo some of these therapies when youre older, but, you know, it happens. Remember jimmy carter, president carter he had mel static melanoma and he was i i believe close to 90 years old at the time and done very well since then from the cancer standpoint, so there is optimism certainly but its going to be a tough road. It struck me and other people elive been talking to alex trebek had stage 4 pancreatic cancer and went through his treatment and has been able to prolong his life and gone back to work. How personal is it in terms of treatment, and i guess what im getting at is some people react really well to one certain drug or one certain protocol. How much does each individual play into it . It is changing so quickly, and its kind of its a great question because we used to think about these cancers and just, you know, pancreatic cancer, period. And now the testing will look at the types of cells that aremitated in that cancer and figure out are thosemitated cells, do they provide certain targets in terms of a targeted therapy. This is new form of therapies. Right now theres a lot of people and its also reflective of data that is 10, 20 years old. And doctors have therapies available and to your point theres more sophisticated testing that can give doctors and a medical team a better idea is he likely to respond to these new therapies, and if so whats that degree of response . Its exciting. People dont want to put a cart in front of a horse and be overly hopeful, but hes right. There are new therapies and options available. We certainly hope there are for him. Dr. Sanjay gupta thanks so much for your expertise. We appreciate you being with us. And we are just getting in reactions to this news. Former president bill clinton tweeting, if theres anyone with the strength and courage to fight this, its you, john. Hillary and i love you and we join with millions of americans in praying for you and your family. Speaker of the house nancy pelosi shared a photo of her and congressman lewis adding were all praying for you following this diagnosis, john. Know generations of americans have you in their thoughts and prayers as you face this fight. We are all praying you are all comfortable. We know you will do well. Earlier tonight i spoke with cnns chief Political Correspondent dana bash about the mark congressman lewis has made on this country and his decades of public service. Take a listen. When it comes to his his role in American History and obviously more recently his 30 plus years encongress, its hard to overstate how much impact hes had. First of all on that bridge in selma, alabama, i had the honor of going with him. He makes the pilgrimage, takes some reporters with him, in order to tell the story of what happened in 1965 when he was walking across that bridge with so many other civil rights activists just for the sole purpose of getting the right to vote for africanamericans, and he got his head bashed in. He almost didnt survive. He says he remembers feeling like he was going to die. He was 25 years old. And that that moment was really a turning point in the movement for africanamericans to get the right to vote that led to the Voting Rights that was such a critical time that he as i said he makes a point of bringing people back every single year. Sometimes its the president. Sometimes its, you know, firstterm members of congress from across the aisle, republicans and democrats. You kind of alluded to this, jessica. John lewis is the heart and soul of the Democratic Caucus and even beyond the Democratic Caucus. When theres a big fight coming up whether its a policy fight or even a political fight the Democratic Caucus turns to him many, many times for the leadership that they know he can give, for the sort of heart and the soul that they know he can provide. You know, he always says we need to get into trouble, good trouble. Ive seen him say that to kids he meet and to adults who are trying to make change. And our thanks there to dana bash. Still to come two states, two horrific attacks. One thing in common, the victims were all people of faith. Plus 0 interest for 24 months on all beds. Ends new years day. Other breaking news this sunday evening, violence, bloodshed and a deadly shooting today. Two terrifying attacks on peaceful religious services. One jewish, one christian. And i want to warn you about some of the images were going to show you. Theyre very disturbing. This is where a man with a knife barged into ar rabbis home in new york city late saturday. The house at that time was filled with people celebrating the seventh night of hanukkah. Now take a look at the surveillance video. Its from a neighbor, and it shows whats believed to be the attacker running to a car. Police found him they say covered with blood a few minutes later driving to new york city. Hes now been charged with five counts of attempted murder. Then this warning inside a church of christ in fort worth texas. Police say a man there opened fire during sunday services. She shot two people, one of them dying before two armed people in the congregation used their own gun and shot the man dead. Alison, people there dealing with the second violent attack on the Jewish Community in the span of just a few weeks. How are they coping tonight . Well, this community is certainly in disbelief, and tonight were learning just how the suspect, 30yearold graphten thomas got inside the home. It wasnt unusual to have that door unlocked at the rabbis home especially on a night like last night when there was a big celebration going on, a guest at this celebration tells us it was during this moment that the rabbi was lighting the menorah thomas allegedly walked in and began his stabbing spree, stabbing five people including the rabbis own son. One is being hailed as a hero. He told cnn he threw a coffee table at the suspect and wrote down the suspects license plate number, and that was a good thing because that car was electronically tagged as it drove over the George Washington bridge into new york city. So once police got their eye on him they wound up apprehending him in harlem. I dont know if we can go to that video. They say he was covered in blood, and later we learned that prosecutors said he smelled like bleach indicating he was trying to cover up a crime. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had some strong words about what happened here. It is an american cancer that is spreading in the body politic. An american cancer turns one cell in the body against the other. Once we become intolerant of differences then we are intolerant with america because america is all about differences. This is terrorism. It is domestic terrorism. These are people who intend to create mass harm, mass violence, generate fear based on race, color, creed. That is the definition of terrorism. And just because they dont come from another country doesnt mean that theyre not terrorists, and they should be prosecuted as domestic terrorists. Governor cuomo is ordering that state Police Increase their patrols of security and otherwise in these Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods across new york state. Thank you so much for your update. Lets listen now to how one witness described how the horrific attack unfolded. While i was saying that he pulled out and he started to run into the big room which was on the left side and he told him he should get out of here and he injured a guy but he was bleeding here, bleeding on his hand, all over. I ran into the other room because i tried to save my wife. I saw him running down this way, so i ran out and two ladies came along with me, still hysterical. And theyre still hysterical right now. Horrific and just so wrong. Joining me now is the cofounder of the Orthodox JewishPublic Affairs council. Thanks so much for being with us. We saw you earlier today walking alongside governor andrew cuomo. Did you ask him for anything specifically, and is the Jewish Community of new york in your mind getting what it needs in the governments response . While i was walking with the governor i stressed to him that press releases have limited effect and there needs to be more concrete and more ongoing steps from state and local governments, and thats something the governor echoed in his conversation with the rabbi at his home and in his two press conferences where the governor stressed there will be an increased level of Law Enforcement presence for the longterm. And the governor also made mention that come 2020 he wants to propose new legislation next week or two weeks from now when these cases come about, prosecutors will have better tools to prosecute such cases. Will that make you feel safer if that legislation is indeed passed . I mean, when government acts in the direction of taking hate crimes serious, thats obviously a good thing. But the challenge with many of these legislative pieces is that prosecutors many times do not have the evidence to apply those new laws. Take for example this specific case. If the law were to be in place can we in this case use it, i dont know. And sometimes purps are at the scenes of attack and they dont say anything. And prosecutors say, well, we dont have evidence this is hate crime. And so its good that the governor and the government wants to do more work, but i am wary, if you will, how effective some of these new legislative steps will actually be. Yeah. I want to take a look at the scene this afternoon at the rabbis house where the stabbing occurred. I want to let people see and kind of hear. Take a listen. And we see people, yossi, singing, dancing, clapping, really a moment that seemed to show the strength and resilience of the Jewish Community there. How is your community doing tonight . Well, last night about an hour after the attack, after all the victims were transported to the hospital the rabbi went over to his congregation, to a synagogue next door and continued with the celebrations. And this afternoon as you just showed to your viewers basically the old testaments, the bible is written on parchment and then put on the scrolls and when a new torah is written you have celebrations as you have seen now. And so this obviously shows that the members of the Orthodox Community will continue with their lives, and they continued at the same place and same street and same night and same day at this attack took place. Now, continuing with a life doesnt mean you can ignore the problem, and therefore it has been very helpful for the governor to come in. It has been a great show of support from all levels of government and were expecting more dignitaries to come by tomorrow. So on the one hand you continue life including celebrating judaism and instead they are focused on how to handle the problem of antisemitism whether its in jersey city, in new york or down back in the city especially brooklyn. Yeah. I want to ask you about the people injured in the attack. Five people were injured in the attack. The rabbis son among them. Do you know how theyre doing . My understanding is that three of the five victims have been released from the hospital. Certainly one of them is in very critical condition. He went through a lot of surgeries over the past i dont know where are we now 20 hours, so theres one patient in serious condition. He is a 71yearold male. So that 71yearold in serious condition. Thank you for you guys lots of love there in your community. Thank you very much. Thank you very much for covering this story. I appreciate it. As new york grapples with the aftermath of 13 antisemitic attacks in recent days were going to take a look at the role Homeland Security plays in protecting jewish communities. Thats next. Esper spoke briefly last hour after he and other Top National Security officials traveled to maralago and florida to brief President Trump on the operation. The pentagon says the strikes targeted five facilities linked to an iran backed militia and that they were retaliation for a series of attacks that injured American Military personnel and left a civilian contractor dead. The president is now entering his second week of vacation. And jeremy secretary of state pompeo saying threats against American Forces have been ongoing for weeks now. What do we know about the threats, and what do we know about why the u. S. Decided to take action now . Thats right, jessica. Well, the secretary of state did begin his remarks talking about the fact these attacks have been ongoing for weeks and weeks and that he has issued repeated warnings to iran and its proxies in the region not to begin carrying out these attacks at the iraqi bases where u. S. Coalition forces are stationed. So it appears that the tipping appointment was this latest attack that took place on friday that actually resulted in one u. S. Defense contractor dead and four u. S. Service members injured. Because secretary pompeo specifically talked about the fact that the u. S. Will not stand for iranian actions that put u. S. Lives in jeopardy. So it does appear that loss of life and those injuries on friday were perhaps the tipping point. It was interesting that the president was not the one to actually come out and deliver this message today despite being at the same location as his three top defense and Foreign Policy officials. Instead we saw the secretary of state as well as secretary of defense mark esper and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff mark milly delivering this message which was not only to explain what took place with these five strikes, three in iraq and two in syria against this iranian backed militia. But instead what we also saw was this message of deterrence, it appeared. Secretary esper making it clear he had just briefed the president on other options and the u. S. Could take additional action if there were any retaliation from iran or proxies or if they do indeed continue these attacks that continue to threaten those American Forces in the region. That was the very clear message we saw from the president s top officials. All right, well wait and see if we hear anything from him. Here to discuss this is cnn National Security analyst samantha vinegrad. Sam, what impact do you think these strikes will actually have in terms of our missions in the middle east . Well, we have to look at this from a few perspectives. Protection, Counter Terrorism and countering iran. We have thousands of troops in iraq, not to mention thousands of american civilians working with the u. S. Military. They are going to stay in place. These strikes were meant to deter more attacks against thousands of american personnel and theyve been targeting americans for years. It was founded in about 2006 or 2007 and we have institutes counselor terrorism operations to stop groups like nih to send a message our Counter Terrorism operations from iraq and syria and finally this is major countering iran message as well. Pompeo was standing next to members from the pentagon and this briefing shortly ago which sent a message theres a whole government approach to counter iran, whether that be with more sanctions or more military operations. Theres a lot of tools in the tool kit and theyre being used together. And trump is reportedly meeting with his Security Team about these strikes and earlier today he spoke with russian president Vladimir Putin just days after russia claimed it now has a hypersonic weapon. How big of a threat is hypersonic weapon . Well, we have to take everything russia says with a grain of salt. They tend to exaggerate. But this hypersonic weapon travels incredible speeds and russia claims it can evade u. S. Missile defense architecture. We do know russian capabilities with respect to Hypersonic Weapons are well beyond ours, and china is also said to be developing Hypersonic Weapons as well, so that is threat. Whats a bigger threat in the near future however is the architecture disintegrating. We brew from that treaty and now another treaty the new start treaty is set to expire in 2021, so the whole set of architecture that guvens the kind of weapons we have is disintegrating and also north korea and iran are developing their own capabilities. A lot of parts moving around on that one. Lets turn now from conventional weapons to cyber ones. Theres reporting the administration is considering more offensive Cyber Operations against russia. So going on the offense here. What are the pros and cons of those types of operation snz. This is good reminder to read between the tweets because President Trump is so focused on perceived domestic adversaries but parts of the government is really upping our ante. 24 United States is engaging campaigns using efforts throughout history. What were seeing a modernization of those influence campaigns. As you mentioned were taking this on the offensive and trying to target actors involved in Information Warfare against us. Reportedly we did an operation against russian trolls and now we may be considering targeting Security Professionals and oligarchs perhaps aligned with putin. The question is if we do implement those operations how russia responds. Theres a tit for tat cycle which makes the targeting critically important. Really important to have that. President trump launched his 2016 campaign with an attack on immigrants from mexico saying mexico was not sending its best and then infamously calling mexicans rapists. But as cnns nick vuyealencia reports one Group Believes trump living thin democratic strong hold of el paso his goal is to get latinos to help reelect the president but the odds are against him. Im with border hispanics for trump. How are you . Have you heard of us . As the 65yearold sees it there are countless latinos who supports the president but are afraid to admit it. I look at President Trump as the one who most closely represents why values. People will hear that and say values, what values does the president have . I mean supporting things i support like being against abortion, being for limited government involvement, being for border security. Reporter indeed support for trump in texas among latinos has remained steady at 30 according to recent cnn poll. The unwavering support comes in the face of criticism over the president s rhetoric on the Latino Community which his critics at best see as offensive and at worst racist. When mexico sends its people, theyre not sending their best. How can you still support somebody who they see as saying racist things. I really dont think hes said things that wererace. Reporter in august 22 people were killed in a racist attack targeting latinos in an el paso walmart. I just dont think you can hold a president , President Trump in particular responsible for the actions of a single madman. Baca agrees with the president on most things but not everything. Mainly he supports the idea of a wall, he questions the practicality of building one. I see him with his faults, i see him warts and all. I dont want to spend, you know, 200 billion on a wall if you can do it for 50 billion and solve the problem. Reporter tonight his pitch for trump comes at an impromptu gathering for conservatives, but even in a friendly crowd it can be a hard sell. But there are already some unlikely voters he doesnt have to win over. President trump is the first president you voted for . Yeah. Reporter originally from mexico 29yearold bianca became a u. S. Citizen just five years ago. She plans on voting for trump again in 2020. Oftentimes im asked why or i feel like someones going to throw eggs at me or im going to be shunned by the hispanic community. Shunned by some perhaps but thats what ray baca and trump are counting on. We need to get our hispanic brethren to quit voting democrat simply because thats what theyve always voted. With 2020 now just days away were counting down the biggiest media stories of the year from big moments in Investigative Journalism to the streaming wars, the fox news and its cozy relationship with the white house. Cnns Brian Stelter takes a look back at 2019. Reporter a misinformation minefield feeding a war on truth, plus an abrupt departure, shocking investigations and an alleged corporate coverup. Here are the top nine media stories of 2019. Number 9, jeff bazos versus the National Enquirer. In january the tabloid published a bombshell, a month later the tech billionaire who also owns the Washington Post went public with a stunning allegation. Breaking now, amazon founder jeff bazos accusing the National Enquirer of blackmail and extortion. Ami, the Parent Company of the enquirer denied trying to destroy bazos with racy pictures and texts. The federal prosecutors began look into the claim. Later announced the sale of the tabloid after reportedly becoming disgusted with the enquirers tactics. So will the company pay a legal price for tangling with jeff bazos, well that is still an open question. Number 8, the fall of local news. While many big papers are gaining Digital Subscribers local papers are struggling and some even going out of print. Across the country newsrooms are being hollowed out, leaving behind ghost papers shells of their former selves. Now theyre making more cuts. If theres a Silver Lining its that more people are subscribing to digital outlets. Number seven, a triumph of Investigative Journalism. The Jeffrey Epstein scandal was forc forced by one newspaper the miami herald. And the heralds reporting didnt just lead to epsteins arrest but also forced the exit of a trump cabinet member. Labor secretary Alexander Acosta resigning after the fall out from the sweetheart deal he gave to Jeffrey Epstein as a prosecutor a decade ago. Its why local journalism is so crucial. It holds the powerful to account. Number six is me too, two years later. Women journalists are keeping the pressure on powerful men. Gael king kept her composure as r. Kelly ranted. Widely praised for her interview of Prince Andrew and more just keeps coming out. Ronan farrows catch and kill contained an explosive Rape Allegation against former today show host matt lauer, an accusation lauer denied. Nbc dismissed his book as distorted and inaccurate. November five, in hollywood the streaming wars are on. Apple tv plus launched in november with programming from alist talent. Disney plus followed two weeks later and 10 million subscribers signed up on the first day, crashing the platform early on. Cnns Parent Company warner media unveiled its plans for hbo max and all these companies are chasing netflix, which doubled, no, tripled down on original content. It founded the irishman bypassing a traditional theatrical release. Number four, it is fox versus fox with news being squeezed out and protrump opinion winning the day. On fox news the tension built all yearlong. Attacking our colleague whos here to offer legal assessments on our air in our work home is repugnant. Repugnant. Not clear if that was you or me but someones repugnant. And adding to the pressure President Trump lashed out whenever democrats or dissenters appeared on fox. Theres something going on at fox and im not happy with it. Reporter the ultimate flash point came in october when shepherd smith resigned. Even in our current polarized nation its my hope that the facts will win the day, that the truth will always matter. Reporter smith provided a reality check to foxs viewers who pretty much hear protrump talking points all day long and now reporters at fox are worried his exit has left a giant hole. And that leads right into number three, impeachment dueling media bunkers. The networks went wall to wall for had hearings. On day one two career diplomats testified for six hours. But viewers heard the hearing was a disaster and down right boring. So day one of this impeachment farce. It was such a disaster. A disaster for it democrats. A complete and utter disaster. All across the protrump media universe far right websites hyped clips of gop and all of this gets amplified on the web which brings us to number two. The misinformation age making it harder and harder to know what is true. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slowed down to make it seem like she was slowing her words. They racked up millions of views on facebook which refused to take it down. We think its important for people to make their own informed choice what to believe. And its only getting worse into 2020. Facebook is sparking outrage for essentially allowing lies in political ads. Do you see a potential problem here with complete lack of Fact Checking on political advertisements . Facebook claims its job is not to consider whats true or false. Google has made a few tweaks and goog twitter has stopped taking political ads entirely. The constant haze of misinformation brings us to number one, the war on truth. And the trump administrations daily assault on facts. The deep state and the failed ruling class. The democrats, the media and the deep state are desperate to stop us. The opponents, the opposition, the democrats, the radical left, deep state, whatever you want to call them. More gaslighting. There is no deep state conspiracy. Nope. Trumps message is dont believe your eyes, dont believe your ears, only believe me and it has undermined trump in everything. Remember sharpie gate . As Hurricane Dorian approached trump said it was at risk even though it wasnt and the president insisted. Agency staffers reportedly felt pressure to support his lies. To say this out loud sounds ludicrous but as you point out we have federal employees getting rep manlded for accurately disclosing scientific truth. And we it again now with the assertion ukraine not russia interfered in the 2016 election. Theres only one reason theyre changing the story for you right now and its to confuse you and distract you and make you not care about it because it doesnt seem to make sense anymore because nothings true. What does it mean for our democracy if we can no longer agree on objective truth . That is the challenge heading into 2020. Brian stelter, cnn, new york. And here is a programming note for you. The truth is if you look at the totality of hat crimes on places of worship we have an epidemic. What youre seeing from the Homeland Security. Its starting to see were focussed on the trends now. That is people are reeking violence on places of worship. The challenge for places of worship anyone who has faith is that theyre open for a reason. They want to be welcoming. Whether its the immigrant the refugee. A church or mosque or synagogue wants to be welcoming. If we say the answer is lets get armed guards at every door and have people go through deekters. You lose what it means to have a place of worship. And to have faith. And thats the challenge for a lot of these places. They dont want to be like an airport. They want to maintain the openness.
